WOW! Full color, what a dif ference it

makes. I appreciate the efforts of Barbara

Singer, Deb Kaplan and our Marketing

& C o m m u n i c a t i o n s co m m i t te e fo r

enhancing the quality and presentation

of our newsletter.

I want to welcome all of our members back for another

outstanding Delaire season. Needless to say, there has been a

lot going on at our club.

The Golf Course Enhancement Ad Hoc committee has been

working diligently to finalize a plan that will be presented to our

membership in early December for your review. The preliminary

plans look great and will enhance the golf course to a level

commensurate with our clubhouse and fitness center. A special

thank you to Ron Ellish, Murray Gross and Steve Salzman for

their efforts.

Our Entertainment committee, with the assistance of Trent, Chef

Glenn and Kathryn, has assembled a full schedule of great and

varied events for the upcoming season. All members are highly

encouraged to participate. I want to personally thank Gwenn

Brenner for taking on this important committee.

I want to congratulate the Ladies Summer Swingers golf team.

They finished in third place the first year they played. They can’t

wait till next summer.

The responsibility of your Board of Governors is clear. We

are responsible for providing the governance necessary to

enhance the members’ experience at Delaire while balancing

first class amenities with fiscal responsibility. The Board, with

recommendations from committees made up of members, has

made some significant changes to our membership structure.

These changes were not easily nor hastily determined and

were considered in light of the consequences of other events

occurring at Delaire. Please remember that we are all members

of Delaire; we should all be treated with the respect that each of

us deserves.

We have scheduled a town hall meeting of the resident

equity members on Sunday, October 26th at 3:00 to discuss

membership and other issues. The Board looks forward to

seeing you there.

From time to time you read in the newspaper, or other publications negative views regarding country clubs. “Clubs are just a carefree playground for the elite, and golf courses are nothing more than an amenity that leeches valuable water resources.”

These short sighted writers could not be farther from the truth. What they don’t talk about is the fact that clubs are a family. And like family you are able to share great times; the news of a birth, a milestone achievement of a child, or grandchild, you share birthdays and holidays. And like family you share the not- so-great times. Fortunately when the news is not so good, you have each other to lean on.

In addition, these writers don’t tell the story of how clubs fuel the economy by supporting so many local businesses, and create thousands of jobs so employees can earn their livings and provide for their families. In Delaire’s case that is over 120 men and women. These writers don’t talk about the ecosystems that are created. Just look around at the haven that has been created for plants and wildlife.

So be proud of what you have and find comfort in knowing you have an extended family to share both joy and sorrow with. Enjoy and embrace the lifestyle and all the amenities at Delaire. As you play golf or walk the grounds, take notice of the beauty of nature that surrounds you. I know I speak for myself and the staff when I thank each of you for the opportunity you provide us.

As always thank you for your continued support.

Delaire paired with Caddies for A Cure’s/Birdies for the Brave program that invites military personnel for an afternoon of lunch and golf. The inaugural event was held on July 24th and covered by the Sun Sentinel. This initiative was Delaire’s way of expressing our appreciation and deep respect to those who have served, and are still serving, in the military and in many cases have sustained serious and permanent injuries, and to honor them for everything they have done for us and our country.

With American flags on the green’s poles, the atmosphere was definitely one of patriotism. Delaire members teamed up with wounded warriors, military veterans and active duty personnel for a day of friendly competition.

Chairman Curt Karpel, who organized the event with the golf staff remarked, “it was such a success, we’re doing it again…on Monday, November 10. Thank you to all of the members who participated.”

Angel Perez and Mark Sjoberg walk to the first hole.

Just My Opinion...Barbara Singer, Editor

Welcome to Delaire’s “new and improved” newsletter. While it still is all about “the good life” here in this extraordinary community, it was time to change the look and format. We hope you like it and, as always, we are always open to hear about your ideas and suggestions for the publication.

Another “new” feature in Delaire…we’re “hotwired!”:

Hotwire has provided us with a Fision fiber optic network for our cable, internet and phones, and the availability of security services too. Fiber to the home is reported to enhance our property values! From my personal experience, the conversion from Comcast to Hotwire was almost flawless. We even chose to include our phones and switch from our AT& T U-verse programming. The service was fabulous. After a very few minor adjustments, which were immediately addressed, I am one happy customer. And no, this is not a paid endorsement…it’s just my opinion!

I look forward to seeing everyone around campus and to welcoming back our snowbirds and snowflakes. Delaire is THE place to enjoy THE GOOD LIFE!

Please contact Mia White at 561-498-9459 or [email protected]. We send cards from the Club to members, with donations to Play For Pink, for an illness, hospitalization, in memoriam, etc.  We need your help in notifying us in order to accomplish this. Thank you.

Those of us who live here at Delaire year round welcome those who are returning after a summer away. You are sure to notice some change!

The Comcast contract was terminated at the end of August and the transition to Hotwire is well underway. To date Hotwire has completed 164 installations within the Delaire community. If you are one of the 63 homeowners who were away this summer, it is critical that you contact Hotwire at 561-509-5429 as soon as possible to get your installation started…especially if you are importing an existing phone number to Hotwire. There has been extremely positive feedback about the Hotwire (Fision) in-house training sessions that been held over the past few weeks. WiFi, internet and TV are up and running throughout the clubhouse. Many thanks to the transition team of David Kaplan, Ila Davidoff, Cathy Cutler-Salzman, Liz Greener and Property Manager Natalie Mitchell, who helped facilitate the change.

A goal of the POA is to update the Rules and Regulations, the Architectural Review Guidelines and the By-Laws this year.

Please take a few minutes to review current POA guidelines regarding roof cleaning, exterior painting and major improvements. In addition note that ANY hurricane shutters must be taken down by November 1 or a penalty will incur.

Please pay attention to the speed limits within Delaire. Let’s keep everyone safe!

The whole family will have something to look forward to at the new-and-improved Holiday Carnival in December. With new rides and activities, and a live animal show, there will be food and fun for all to enjoy. Holiday week will conclude with a pool-side buffet and movie! In January, we will have a comedy night that is sure to make your sides split, and the following week there will be a “Cork, Crudité, and Canvas” evening painting class for all to enjoy. A Mardi Gras Pool Party has been added in February, and bus trips to The Seminole Hard Rock Casino are also in the works.

We hope to see more participation this year. Please make sure to check mailings, emails, and the clubhouse TV for information on upcoming events. See you soon!

Congratulations and thanks to all of our members who participated in summer golf leagues. Our women participated in the Summer Swingers League for the first time. Joy Fedelim did a wonderful job as captain of the team that finished in third place.

The Men’s South County team finished second in their division and advanced to the playoffs. Max Baran and Stu Naar are the Co-Governors and also did an outstanding job.

Many women members participated in the South Palm Women Golf League which is an individual league. Thanks to Liz Greener for her tremendous efforts as the Delaire Delegate.

The Delaire Women Golf Association held their weekly tournaments and the participation increased from previous summers.

The Golf Pro Shop has begun receiving our new fall merchandise. Purple is the new Black, also Red in combination with black and grey appears in many collections. Some new exciting brands will be added to our upscale inventory such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Chase 54, Vivacity and Vineyard Vines. Make sure you stop by periodically to say hello as well as keep supporting your beautiful Golf Shop. In case you do not find what you are looking for, we can always special order any item as long as we have a business relationship with the supply company.

Several Golf Club Demo Days will be scheduled with the dates and information sent out in the near future.

Be sure to check your calendars, mail and Delaire TV for news about upcoming tournaments. We are looking forward to a great season!

The maintenance staff is prepared for a great season. We finished trimming all the palms ahead of schedule, and are currently trimming the hardwood trees. This has the added benefit of opening up canopies so that sunlight can come through and thicken up the turf in shaded areas.

We have had three great aerifications on our greens, one on the fairways and two in all the roughs. This will help in firming up the greens and breaking up the compaction in the fairways and roughs. We also re-grassed the driving range tees and rebuilt the chipping approach, making it wider and flatter to accommodate the increase of play. The east side tee top was planted in Celebration grass, the west side in Platinum Paspalum, and the chipping approach in 419 Bermuda. This initiative was designed to give members a sampling of the three top turfs in use today.

Steve Verville, Golf Course Superintendent

Who are those amazing golfers hidden behind the white and green visors? They are the gorgeous women from Delaire known as the “Summer Swingers.” The Summer Swingers is an inter-club golf league in which several country clubs compete, including The Fountains, Boca Woods, Mizner, Glen Eagles, Broken Sound and Aberdeen, and this year Delaire was part of that league. The location of the tournaments moved among the participating clubs. The required handicap is between 21 and 32, but that didn’t stop higher handicaps from playing. In fact it motivated them to play harder.

Everyone gave it their all and at the end of the day, the little engine that could… DID!!! We came in as the long shots…the new kids on the block…and we finished in 3rd place overall out of 8 teams. Delaire is for real!

We’re looking forward to next summer, and watch out everyone as Delaire is in it to come out on top!

Delaire Woman’s Golf AssociationNancy Carver, President DWGA

Summer, fall, winter and spring the members of the Delaire Woman’s Golf Association are playing golf. Every Tuesday morning there is an organized golf event. This summer, thanks to Joy Fedelim, we had a new interclub program, The Summer Swingers. These women finished in 3rd place!! Congratulations to all The Summer Swingers, a job well done.

On November 4th, our official season begins with an Opening ABCD Scrambles, a breakfast and a special luncheon. Later in the month, we have the first major tournament of the season, the Member/Member. This 2-day fun, competitive event is a net tournament (with shots), played in flights. Find a partner or ask our professional staff to help you.

At our Closing Luncheon last spring, we asked the DWGA members to give us their opinions and suggestions for this coming season. Using your input, the DWGA Board has put together an exciting calendar of events. We will again have our Member/Guest at the end of January, the home and away inter-clubs with St. Andrew’s Country Club, the 2-day mixed Ryder Cup, and many of the same and different Tuesday formats. Also added to the Delaire Golf calendar, is a Mixed Member/Guest, 9 and Dines and mixed 18 hole weekend tournaments. Please check the Delaire Calendar or the DWGA Handbook for dates.

As our official golf season commences, I’d like to encourage all women golfers at Delaire to participate in the woman’s program. We have both an 18 hole and a 9 hole division, each with participants of varied experiences and handicaps. Please consider joining the Delaire Woman’s Golf Association. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Joe or Billy in the Golf Pro-shop or myself, Nancy Carver.

The DWGA Board and I look forward to a fun, exciting, competitive season of Delaire golf. We hope you’ll be part of these good times and join in the camaraderie.

The Legal & By-Laws Committee

is charged with oversight of the

Club’s Articles of Incorporation,

By-Laws and Rules & Regulations

and provides advice to the Board

on a variety of issues.

After assisting the Board through the updating of the

Rules & Regulations, the Legal & By-Laws Committee

is now starting the process of proposing amendments

to the Club’s Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws. We

are starting with some “easy” proposed amendments

which we are planning to send to the membership this

fall. These have all appeared in the Board recaps sent

to the membership, but here they are again:

1. Split the Tennis and Fitness Committee back into

two separate committees.

a. These two committees meet separately and

have different objectives.

2. Split the Entertainment Committee from the Food &

Beverage Committee.

a. These two committees meet separately and

have different objectives.

3. Provide specific criteria for expelling Non-Resident

Equity Members from the Club.

a. There is no specific criteria in the current By-

Laws.

4. Allow qualif ying exist ing Non-Resident Equity

Members the ability to apply for Alumni membership.

a. This provides the exist ing Non-Resident

Equity Members with the same opportunity as

the Resident Equity Members have to become

Alumni Members.

The Board has also received a proposed By-Law

amendment from a member, accompanied by the

required petition signed by members, regarding the

constituency of the Nominating Committee. This will

also be mailed to the membership for their vote this fall.

As always, the members of the Legal & By-Laws

committee and the Board welcome your questions and

comments.

latest styles for all body types and ages. The lines that we currently carry are Nike, Tail, Fila, Marika, Wilson,

Sofibella, Lucky in Love, Kos Fitness, Under Armour, Rese, New Balance and others.

Commandments of Racquet Care

1. Store your racquet in a safe place - Heat, cold and high humidity may not affect your racquet, but those

factors combined with improper storage can damage the strings and frame. A common mistake is leaving

your racquet in the trunk of your car.

2. Restring Regularly - As a general rule, you should string your racquet as many times in a year as you play in

a week (If you play 3 times in a week you should restring 3 times per year). The minimum should be 2 times

per year. People often make the mistake of waiting until the strings break, however strings can lose tension

which can cause inconsistent ball control.

3. Replace your grip – An old, warn grip makes your grasp less secure and your shots less powerful and

accurate. This can also cause you to squeeze the grip harder than normal, which will fatigue your arm.

Password Management

The use of a password manager to store and generate your passwords is essential today for computer security. There are thousands and thousands of hackers out there every day who are trying to steal your information and if you are not using complex, secure passwords, you are going to get hacked and that could become very expensive.

Most people tend to use one password for everything and that is probably the worst thing that you can do. If the hackers crack that one password, they have access to everything. That leads us to RULE #1: USE A DIFFERENT PASSWORD FOR EACH ITEM YOU ARE TRYING TO PROTECT. That means your apple password should be different than your Google password which is different from your Hotmail password, etc.. Never use passwords like “Password”, “1234” any combination of your name, your birthday or the birthday of a relative. Hackers are looking for these constantly. Use a generated password like “qIUTJb1q6J” which has absolutely no meaning to you or anyone else. How do you generate a Password????

There are many programs that wi l l s tore and generate passwords. I have been using RoboForm for years and really trust it. RoboForm will do the following:

1. Generate passwords2. Store passwords3. Store your Credit Card information4. Fill in any online forms you come across5. Synch your passwords with other devices

All your passwords are stored locally on your computer so that you can back them up. You need to set a very strong password for RoboForm at the outset of the setup and that is the only one you have to write down somewhere. I store passwords like that in a password protected file on my computer, not on the Cloud.

RoboForm is easy to install and use. You will find it at www.roboform.com.

Delaire on the Internet

Be sure to check out Delaire’s website,

www.Delaire.org, for the calendar,

news you can use, event photos,

homes for sale, and much more.

One of the homes for sale in Delaire was featured on the nationally aired House Hunters television show (via HGTV, the Home & Garden Television channel) on August 31 re-runs airing at various times thereafter.

The show expanded the exposure of this particular property and obviously Delaire to a national audience.

The format of the show is based on a couple searching to find and purchase their perfect home. They narrow the search to 3 properties, discuss the pros and cons of each one, then select their final choice. The program is very interactive, because the producers keep the viewer guessing throughout the program which home the buyers will select.

Thanks to Suzanne Block and Claire Abrams for their efforts in making this happen.

Fitness FactsPhil Bayne, Fitness Director and the Fitness Committee

Come on Up!With TV and newspaper ads urging people to “come on down” to south Florida, we’re saying “come on up”….to the Fitness Center! There is no better way to relieve stress, lose weight, increase endurance, and just feel better about yourself than to work out.

To enhance your f itness experience the club offers complimentary group classes, check the calendar for specific classes, dates and times. The trainers and I are available for personal training and stretching sessions. Stop by or call 561-495-1504 to make an appointment. For your physical therapy and massage needs we have Vado Therapy which will meet you right here at your club. For an appointment call Vado’s office at 561-450-6489.

Let our staff help you get the most out of our facility. There are no contests, therefore nothing to prove. In order to maximize your workout it is important to know how to properly and safely use the fitness equipment. We are here to familiarize you with each and every piece of equipment. All you need to do is ask. Also please take a moment to go over all of the rules, which are posted upstairs in the Fitness Center.

We are looking forward to another great and healthy season at Delaire…so “come on up” and get moving!

There’s a lot you can do, but Harvard researchers now say that skipping your daily soda may also help.

There is ample good science to suggest we can do some positive things when we become weak in the knees. Steps to prevent it include reducing the weight load by maintaining an ideal weight; avoid activities that will over-stress your knees (such as running); and beefing up the muscles that support the knee. Working on the quadriceps in the front of the thigh and the hamstrings in the back can help absorb some of the stress on the knee.

A new Harvard study finds that drinking cola based soda may be associated with knee problems. Based on their analysis and that of Tuft researchers, consumption of two or more soft drinks per day is related to significant osteoarthritis. Knee osteoarthritis is the deterioration of the cartilage; a smooth tissue that acts as cushioning behind the kneecap and between your thighbone and shinbone. When osteoarthritis occurs, the cartilage wears away and the bones begin to grind against each other. This makes walking, stair climbing and simply flexing the knee painful.

Although a common contributor to knee problems is obesity, scientists found the association between soda and knee damage was not necessarily related to being over-weight. While they couldn’t explain why, they do have some theories about phosphoric acid and its interference with calcium absorption. The other theory is that soda takes the place of healthier food and drink choices. They suggest that if you do have knee problems; reduce your soda intake to less than five drinks per week.

And be sure to continue to stretch and exercise without running or jumping.(Information acquired from the Harvard Health Letter)
