Lovely February Del Webb! January flew by and now were in to the shortest month of the year! Thank the world we have an extra day because with the upcoming schedule we’re going to need it! Every weekend in February (and plenty of week days) is filled with fun and exciting things to do! We kick things off with Save Your Sweethearts raising money for We Care of Polk County through ticket sales and plenty of great auction items up for grabs. THE VERY NEXT DAY Tailgaters are throwing the annual Super Bowl party at the clubhouse. We’ll be dropping the big screen and cheering on the teams/ watching expensive commercials until the end.

Just a few days later on February 8th the Dream Class Band will be playing live for the annual Free Spirit Anniversary Dance Party. Bring your dancing shoes and some snacks, and stay for a great time. Thank you to the Boohers and Bobbie Westman for organizing such a great event for the community. Our popular Titanic lecture series is now coming to an end. The fifth and final lecture it titled More Interesting Facts About the Titanic and I’m sure our Titanic Historian Steve Mattis is full of them. Thank you to Joost for introducing him to Del Webb Orlando and bringing his expertise on board (get it?). On the 15th, Annette Jensen has organized a Valentine’s Tea. I personally love tea, and am eager to see the undoubted creativity she and the table hosts will bring to the event. A few days later on February 19th Cliff Erickson will be hopping off a Celebrity Cruise Ship and joining us for an evening of music, audience participation and song. After 30 years performing around the world, Cliff has established himself as one of the premiere cruise entertainers performing for hundreds. We are lucky he visits on an annual basis here on property. As an aside, I may try and bribe Stephanie to get up and sing a little for us. The Club and Group Expo is February 22nd! Every year the gathering is bigger and better than the last. The Welcome Club does a great job providing this opportunity for clubs and groups to show off, and for residents to see what’s new and join in on the fun! Broadway at the Movies joins us on the 29th to share some Broadway musical magic with a Hollywood flair with the community. Starring Broadway veterans Josh Young and Kirsten Scott, the show highlights some of the best of Broadway and Hollywood. Don’t forget to register for the DWO Mobile Escape Room and secure a time to try your luck. We’ll be bringing a food truck out that day so you can snack while you strategize and wait for your time slot to come. Last but definitely not least, our third ever Lifestyle Social is here on March 6th! Join me for fun and games (ever played Human Bingo?) and enjoy pizza sponsored by AmeriLife. Registration for the event begins on Monday, February 10th at 10 AM and is limited to 150 due to space capacity in the ballroom. I hope to see you there! Have a beautiful month! All the Best!

HOA Update with Stephanie Taylor

Happy February Del Webbers! I truly cannot believe that January is already over! We have had a very busy month for sure with no signs of slowing down just yet! I hope most of you are ready for Superbowl Sunday! Whether you are rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs or the San Francisco 49ers, or are just watching for the commercials, we hope you eat lots of yummy Superbowl snacks with friends, family and neighbors. Its fine, I have heard that calories don’t count on this day!

We have accomplished a lot this past month and have a lot of great projects coming up. The Clubhouse exterior painting project has been completed and looks great. We are also about to get a huge face lift in the ballrooms and the gym with brand new carpeting and new ballroom chairs. We realize that a lot of residents have questions on how to utilize the FirstService Residential Connect Portal. Kortney, your Community Manager is going to host two classes (so all can attend) this month to help you become more familiar. The classes will be held on Thursday, February 13th at 11:00am and Wednesday, February 26th at 6:30pm. If you join for the class on the 26th there will also be a meet and greet with Kortney afterwards. She will be going over all the features that Connect offers, such as accessing your resident profile, account and ledger information and logging maintenance and landscaping requests. We hope to see most of you there! We hope you have a great February. I know it is going to be a good month for us, as we have been given a whole extra day….happy leap year!

DWO Transition Committee The recent news from Pulte that they have closed 90% of the 937 planned home sites in DWO (sooner than originally anticipated) brings us into the transition period – an exciting milestone for the community! Which brings up the question: “What should you expect to see happen within the period from the notification on January 21 until turnover of the HOA from Developer to Homeowner control within a 90 day time period?“ Over the coming weeks there will be a lot of communication about the election process for our Resident controlled Board of Directors, eligibility requirements and deadlines for individuals who aspire for a Board position should follow, an opportunity for residents to meet the candidates, the Board meeting where the election will be held and how ballots will be counted resulting in the announcement of our new Resident Board members. Meanwhile, the Transition Committee is continuing to receive data, and now that we are officially in the transition period there are several documents that Pulte should be delivering as per State of FL Statutes. The committee members continue to analyze all the data, including relevant observations submitted by community residents. We have been collating the results of this analysis into a list to be provided to the Board members. The Committee’s list of both common element and operational items will be Categorized into 4 distinct areas: Issue = something that is currently happening Risk = something that has the potential to happen Liability = something that bears legal implications to DWO HOA Observation = something that is neither an issue nor risk but wanted to make BoD aware of Each item will be designated with an impact, priority, and a recommendation for the Board. We appreciate all the insights that have been provided by community residents as this expands the oversight ability of the 23 committee members. In January, the Committee received Part 2 of the independent engineering review of DWO. These items were annotated as ‘construction’ items, as opposed to the items in Part 1 which were annotated as ‘maintenance’ items. A Part 3 study will be conducted for Vista Bella once all the homes are completed. The Committee has been working collaboratively with Management to prioritize the items, with a ‘safety-first’ view. All maintenance items have been categorized into responsibility bins for addressing by on-site maintenance team, outside vendor, or the developer. All items have been added to First Services’ Connect system for tracking to ensure everything catalogued is corrected. As a reminder we are happy to accept your input through the Transition Committee email at [email protected]. If you have a concern with a maintenance issue in the community, we need you to report it via a work order ticket using the FSR portal: https://delwebborlando.connectresident.com. Welcome to The Neighborhood!

You are ALWAYS Welcome to come play Florida Trivia at the February Welcome Social on Feb 18th. It is going to be a night to remember for all residents, no matter how long you have lived here! The staff from the Central Florida Visitor's Center are coming over to run a fun night of trivia so we can learn a little more about our community and our state. It will be a great way to get together, work as a team and earn some prizes. Bring a few friends and BYOB. We supply the cookies. That's right, no need to get your glasses. You read that correctly. All residents are ALWAYS welcome to come to the Welcome Socials on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm. Whether you lived here 8 years or 8 months, you are welcome. We'll be in the ballroom with cookies and the opportunity to meet new friends. Wouldn't it be nice to go to the pool and say "Hey, I know you!" Try networking at the next meeting. It all starts at the Welcome Socials. See you on February 18th at 6:30pm. And I did mention prizes, right? There will be some great prizes! - Submitted by Jean Morgan on behalf of the Welcome Club

8 Ball Billiards Club

From the 8 Ball Billiard Club we would like to invite anyone (male or female) who might be interested, in checking out our club. Show up on any Tuesday or Thursday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. We are a group of fellow Del Webbers, that enjoy getting together up stairs and having a good time, sharing a laugh or even learning how to play or improving their game. If you are a woman (who might feel intimidated by playing with men) I would invite you to talk with us and maybe we could start a women’s group. We do not play for blood, only enjoyment, the social factor and to meet others that share our interest. If you have never played before, we can help there too. We would be more than happy to meet, either one on one or with small groups, to help you learn or improve. No equipment needed, all is supplied. We are one of the newest Del Web clubs, and with your help and support, we can make it a fun place to be Tuesdays and Thursdays. We hope to see you there!!! Look for our booth at the Club and Group EXPO. Feb. 22.

Birds Take a Hit

A recent study determined that since 1970, bird populations in the United States and Canada have declined 30%! That’s a loss of 3 billion birds. That’s going to have a huge economic and social impact on bird watching—the fastest growing outdoor activity in North America! Birders maintain life lists of birds seen, and travel to remote locations just to add one more bird still unseen. Some 650 species of birds nest in North America north of Mexico.

Grassland birds are down more than 50%; the meadowlark is down 75%. Bobwhite quail are down 80%. Weather radar, bird surveys going back to 1970, and computer modeling were used in the study. Causes are mostly

(1) habitat loss, (2) pesticides, (3) windows, (4) cats, and (5) oil spills. (1) Any development project eliminates a field or woods and thus its wildlife inhabitants, such as here at Del Webb. Habitat fragmentation for roads, housing, and other reasons leaves songbirds in remaining islands of habitat with less food available. Birds simply do not crowd into remaining habitat because of its limited carrying capacity to support them. They die. Survivors are susceptible to nest parasitism by cowbirds. Cowbirds do not build a nest; they lay an egg in the nest of other birds. Their chick hatches and grows faster which deprives host chicks food and space. The increased edge effect of habitat fragments also causes increased predation by birds and mammals. Moreover, tropical rain forests are being destroyed for agriculture,

such as the Amazon rain forest in Brazil that houses many of our winter migrants. This inexorable destruction at current rates seems likely to reduce or even eliminate many of our migrating bird species. And that involves 57 species! (2) Pesticides eliminate insects many birds depend on. (3) Untreated home windows cause birds to break their necks when crashing into them because they reflect the sky and trees. (4) Radio-telemetry studies of house cats left to roam reveal that they kill an unbelievable number of birds. (5) A recurring sight on television news programs is dedicated naturalists trying to save birds contaminated with oil

from oil tankers or accidental spills. (E.g., the largest oil spill in history in the Gulf of Mexico, in 2010, killed more than 1,000,000 birds, among other things.) Marine birds—pelicans, ducks,

grebes, loons, murres, puffins, razorbills, auklets, gulls, and shorebirds—die from oil-contaminated feathers and ingestion. It seems that here at Del Webb we do not see or hear many songbirds. Birds are critters that make our lives more pleasant. Many homeowners have bird feeders in the backyard. Birds are, in fact, an important component of the ecosystem on which human society absolutely depends, as environmentally-aware folks know. Being aware of what is occurring to our birds is the first step in correcting the problem. –Neil Payne

Bocce Ball Club The DWO Bocce Club continues to enjoy a membership growth which now boasts more than 250 players who regularly enjoy this ancient Roman game. It’s a game that everyone can enjoy whether you are a new or experienced player, and it’s a great way to meet new people. One of our courts has been modified for homeowners who may need to use a walker, scooter or wheelchair. Membership is always open to all. Clinics are scheduled several times a year for all residents who want to learn the game or brush up on the rules. Can’t wait to see you on the courts!

Resident MIDEO

Presentation At the Institute on Healthcare Directives you and your family are our primary concern. Utilizing technology known as MIDEO (My Informed Decision on Video), we strive to make sure YOUR VOICE, as the PATIENT is RECOGNIZED, RESPECTED, and that the medical care is right for you. Our medical practice approach is unique. At the Institute on Healthcare Directives we perform Advance Care Planning services that are unique, full service and keep you safe as you navigate the complex healthcare system. • First--we perform medical evaluations with

you personally.

• Second--we educate you with respect to Emergency vs. End of Life Advance Care Planning. This is extremely important as all advance care planning is not the same and focuses on end of life care. This places you at risk when others come in contact with your documents or medical care.

• Third--we create a Advance Care Plan that encompasses State of the Art Technology called MIDEO to ensure you are safely and effectively cared for when critically ill. We utilize and create a POLST (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) versus a living will after you are stratified for risk. It's our processes that are unique, state of the art and keep you and your family safe.

The cost for this physician led healthcare planning process and MIDEO is $349 per person (Medicare and other insurances cover at least part of this cost). In addition, there is an annual maintenance fee of $49.99 per couple. Specific costs after insurance will be determined with the individual at the meeting with the physician. The Institute will ensure that all eligible insurances will be deducted from the $349--we don't want the cost to be prohibitive from getting MIDEO. To find out more about MIDEO for you and your family please attend an informational session on Thursday, February 20 at 10am in the Clubhouse Ballroom--kitchen side. I will be conducting the session for Dr. Ferdinando Mirarchi (Fred), Chief Medical and Scientific Officer, who is licensed to practice medicine in many states including Florida. Looking forward to seeing you on the 20th. Ken Lindberg Advance Care Planning Coordinator Institute on Healthcare Directives

Sharing Stitches Club

Happy 2020 to all from Sharing Stitches Club! We are a group of residents who knit, chrochet and loom items such as hats, blankets, toys and stuffed animals for babies and chemo hats and lap blankets for adult patients, for donation to local hospitals and other health facilities. At present we have over 50 members. We meet every Wednesday 2- 4 PM, share the fellowship and our creative ideas with each other. The club has organized donation schedules on a monthly basis with special themes each month. For example, we are currently working on red hats and blankets for February donation celebrating the Valentine's day month. The club donated 2147 chrochet and knitted items to area hospitals in 2019. Recipleasers What’s the Forecast?

Will Spring be early? According to legend, the Groundhog will tell us on February 2nd. He is the predictor! When the groundhog emerges from his burrow after a long winter sleep, he either sees his shadow or doesn’t. If it is a sunny day, his shadow appears, thus Spring

will come soon. However, if it is cloudy, there is no shadow. The result? We will have six more weeks of winter. How did this belief start? Falling between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, February 2nd is an important day in ancient and modern Christianity. This day in ancient times came to be known as Candlemas. The clergy would bless and distribute candles that were needed for winter. The candles represented how long and cold the winter would be. As Christianity spread throughout the world, the Germans expanded the concept. For them only the hedgehog or other small animals could predict the coming of Spring. When coming to America, many Germans settled in Pennsylvania. They continued this tradition, but they substituted the native animal, the groundhog, for the hedgehog, to predict the weather. The first official Groundhog Day celebration occurred on February 2nd, 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The newspaper editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit Newspaper, Clymer Frias, convinced a group of businessmen and groundhog hunters, known as the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, from the local Elks Lodge, to hold an official Groundhog Day Celebration. Gobbler’s Knob was chosen as the official site to watch for the Punxutawney groundhog, named Phil, to make his appearance. The Elk Lodge offered groundhog meat on its menu. However, this item was discontinued due to lack of interest in this delicacy. Today the Punxsutawney Groundhog Day Celebration is directed by a group of local dignitaries, known as The Inner Circle. The men wear top hats and conduct the ceremony in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect. They claim to speak to Phil in “Groundhogese. Happy Birthday Phil! He is 132 years “young”. On February 2nd, the number of people in Punxsutawney swells from 6,000 to 40,000. What a massive event! In reality, the groundhogs hibernate in the late fall. In early February they emerge from their burrows to search for a mate, not to predict the weather. They then return to their burrows until March. While sleeping underground, groundhogs can lose as much as 30% of their body weight. What a painless way to lose weight! In addition, their heartbeat slows from 80 to 5 beats per minute. They certainly conserve energy! Although Groundhog Phil is famous, he may have a challenger! For the last 30 years the residents of Vermillion, Illinois believe that the Wooly Bear Caterpillar can forecast the weather. According to the legend, if the caterpillar has more orange colorings

Tri-State Club On Saturday January 11, 2020 the Tri-State and Shalom clubs had a joint club event. (NO DUES) and any DWO resident, regardless, of where they lived is eligible to join. Equally important to membership are the coordinator volunteers. They make the club what it is! We are always seeking new event ideas and folks to coordinate them. This might be of particular interest to our working residents and snowbirds. If you volunteer to coordinate an event you get to pick the event and date of the group outing. The Tri- State officers will be happy to assist you when you coordinate an event. Remember, the dynamics and success of our club is directly attributable to our terrific members Please note, that being a trip coordinator is not as difficult as you might think. The club officers will help with portal setup, payment methods and general advertising of the event. Your task is essentially, to work out a date / time for the event, and if possible try to secure a group discount. Most venues are very receptive to having 30 - 50 people visit their establishment. Remember, events don't only have to be dinner or shows, anything where a group of people can get together and have fun will probably work. If you have any questions or events you would be interested in (and willing to coordinate) please contact any of our officers.

Come on up to the second floor Aerobics Room to get your “groove” on to a variety of music and dances. No partner is necessary. Currently, you have two options for lessons. If you have never line danced, then think about coming on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to learn basic steps. This time is available to get you started so the instruction and dances are geared for beginners. The other option is Thursday at 1:00 p.m. This time works for people that have some knowledge of line dancing. You can start on the Sunday lessons then spread your wings on the Thursday 1:00 p.m. class when you are ready. We just want to have a good time. Contact: Bonnie Jacobs
