Here we are with this second issue of DEKA MAG, a magazine designed to let our readers know what is happening at DEKA, the leading company in the El.En. group.
Our first issue was a great success: indeed we were delighted to receive thanks and congratulations from our distributors and customers all around the world.
We have done our best to make the magazine style both simple and straight to the point, as well as practical and concrete – the best way, in our view, of informing and raising interest among our readers. The Internet has completely revolutionized communication, even in the field of scientific information – fresh tools are needed, providing updates straight from the heart of the problem, with practical information that is easy to use and apply.
That is why we need new information tools such as DEKA MAG.
This issue has several new features. This year, 2017, is proving to be a time of great innovation, both in the company’s management structure and with regard to products and applications. One of the most exciting new applications is in Wound Healing: this is a fascinating area where we firmly believe that lasers have great potential. There will be updates on the DEKA DOC Contest and an in-depth study of the French market, which this year has shown excellent sales figures and promotions.Another goal of ours is to create a platform where we can exchange views and opinions with our readers. And so we would love to hear your tips on topics to discuss or your requests for further information.
Thank you for your kind attention – enjoy reading this issue!

With over 35 years of continuous growth, the El.En. Group (which DEKA joined in 1991) has be-come one of the most important players in the global laser market.
El.En. is the holding company in a high-tech industrial group with over 1000 employees, op-erating in the opto-electronics sector, using our proprietary technology and multidisciplinary know-how to manufacture laser sources (gas, semiconductor, solid-state and liquid) and inno-vative laser systems for medical and industrial applications. With global turnover of around € 250 million (in 2016), marking a substantial increase over the previous year, the El.En. group is a robust company with real prospects for further growth.
What is the secret of this con-tinuous growth? Our growth is underpinned by two major market trends - says El.En. Group CEO Gabriele Clementi. “On the one hand, by the increase in demand on the part of an age-ing population for mini-invasive cosmetic/medical treatments, and on the other by a growing de-mand for products designed to reduce surgery timescales, costs and risks, while maximizing

effectiveness. Our products fully satisfy both these trends.”
Constant attention to market de-mands, and continuous invest-ments in R&D in order to come up with safe, effective and in-novative systems, are undoubt-edly two of the key factors in our success. But one thing that also sets us apart from the competi-tion is our presence in various manufacturing sectors. Here at the El.En. Group, we operate in the industrial sector, produc-ing high-tech laser systems for marking, cutting and welding; in the medical sector - in which DEKA is the leading company - with systems used in aesthetic dermatology and various forms of surgery; and in the preserva-
tion of our cultural heritage through systems for restoring and conserving works of art.Working in several sectors pro-vides us with the benefits of cross-fertilization, creating a continuous drive for innovation, as there is a significant exchange of knowledge and know-how between different sectors.
Another strong point is our abil-ity to offer a full range of laser sources that cover most po-tential medical applications as well as discovering new ones on a regular basis. Our vocation for partnerships and dialogue, and our acquisitions over the years of specialist manufacturers of vari-ous laser sources, have helped make us the world’s leading manufacturer of laser sys-tem products in terms of sys-
tems sold (approximately 5,000annually).
Our goal for the coming years is to maintain the growth trend, increasing effectiveness and im-proving interactions and overlap between the various sectors, thus maximizing the benefits of the cross fertilization that distin-guishes our organization. As of January 2017, Italian engineer Paolo Salvadeo joined our top management team as Manag-ing Director, with the aim of maximizing the potential both of the group and its individual member companies.
We firmly believe that a stronger and more effective management structure provides the foundation for healthy and robust growth in a rapidly-evolving market.

Vascular lesions are often a cause of great concern to patients. Treatment is sought for a variety of reasons including cosmesis, pain, bleeding, or disfig-urement.
In the late 1960s, lasers became one of the tools for treating vascular anoma-lies. Although these lasers were effective, they often caused unacceptable side effects, such as scarring and permanent dyspigmentation. This limited the use of lasers for vascular surgery.
Subsequently, progress in the theory of selective photothermolysis showed that determining the appropriate wavelength, pulse duration, and fluence enables physicians to selectively target haemoglobin within blood vessels without damaging surrounding tissue, such as skin. As a result, side effects such as dyspigmentation and scarring have become minimal.
The Synchro VASQ is the new selective pulsed dye laser system for the treat-ment of Port Wine Stain (PWS), widespread vascularisations and superficialpigmented stains. Its wavelength (595nm) is considered in internationalscientific literature to be the best wavelength for absorption by haemoglobin.
This technology offers a wider range of spot sizes, fluences, pulse durations and peak powers to solve a wide range of problems connected with severe multi approach scarring and borderline applications in all the various types, ages and conditions, without producing any significant pigmentary and tex-tural complications.
Also, its ability to control purpura generation via either dye Laser orRightLight™ handpiece, makes Synchro VASQ the right device for optimal scar maintenance whenever a vascular component is involved.

THE EVOLUTION OFDYE LASERS
FOCUS ON
“I have been using Synchro VASQ for about one year now for vascular malformations and anomalies such
as severe PWS, but also for superfical erythroses which cannot normally be treated with PDL because of the purpura it generates and the consequent pain and discomfort for patients. In my experience, this is the
very first time a dye laser has been able to achieve such a great result.”

Wound care has become a top-priority issue for health systems worldwide. Healthcare costs for wound management have been rising in recent years and could experience further growth, due to the gradual ageing of the population and the global in-creases in diseases such as dia-betes and obesity.
Chronic wounds involve various kinds of ulcers:• venouslegulcers• pressureulcers• diabeticfootulcersThese ulcers last 12 to 13 months on average and can lead to am-putation, loss of function and decreased quality of life, as well as being a significant cause of morbidity.
Given its wide range of applica-tions and effects, RF CO2 laser technology could be strategic for effective and efficient wound healing management, in addi-tion to helping with extremely non-responsive wounds (e.g. pa-tients affected by lower limb ul-cers with exposed bone, risking minor or major amputations). The DEKA SmartXide2 RF CO2 la-ser’s exclusive PSD (Pulse Shape Design) technology provides maximum flexibility in terms
of pulse shape (S-pulse, D-pulse, H-pulse, U-pulse and CW mode), which broadens the range of surgical options available to a surgical team.
Through careful selection of technical parameters (such as power, pulse shape, frequency and scanning features), vari-ous effects on tissues can be induced, ranging from precise cuts and/or ablations to deep and effective stimulation of tissueregeneration.
The impressive clinical results achieved in recent years have led to several current research projects, aiming to gain a better understanding of laser-induced mechanisms of action on tissue in wound-healing and other sectors. “I started using the laser for my toughest cases of chronic diabetic foot ulcers, which were usually infected and non-respon-sive treatment. The SmartXide2 has proven really useful both for preparing the wound bed and for deep decontamination, facili-tating the tissue-healing process with surprising results.”

with 4 technicians covering the French territory (including the Caraibes) and we are going to hire a new one because we want to be irreproachable. As far as the sales department is concerned we have now a structure of 4 sales people. Now the trend and future development is in gynecology, with the Monalisa Touch. We have launched Monalisa Touch 4 years ago and we are now facing a great demand for the procedure. We do have more than 40 centers and we are planning to reach at least 150 within the next two years. In that sense, we are proud to announce the first French MonaLisa Touch Day on the 31st of March. It will be the best proof of our excellence in Gynecology.Last but not least: DEKA France will distribute Quanta Systems products. Indeed, being part of the same Group (El.En), we will have the opportunity to propose the largest range of laser solutions. We are really excited about all these new challenges and we give you “rendez-vous” very soon…”

20 YEAR’S BIRTHDAY (1996-2016)
For its 20 years’ birthday on the French market, DEKA Tecnologies Laser inaugurated last September new premises: 200 square meters offices with 100 squares meters stocking and servicing area in the center of Lyon. 20 years of constant development and evolution: from 2 employees to 12 nowadays and a turnover of 4 million euros in 2016.“When I joined DEKA eleven years ago, the main activity was made in the dental business which was amounting 70% of the turnover which was 700 Keuros” says Igor Pellissier, Managing Director.“We had a structure of 4 people and after analyzing the market trends, we decided to develop our activities in the aesthetic and dermatological fields. The first successes came with the SmartLipo and development of the Laserlipolisi. The launch of the SmartXide DOT, followed by the Synchro Pla:y and Repla:y ranges gave us the opportunity to become a major player in the French market. We had to hire sales people and technicians in order to respond to the demands we had.Nowadays, we are emphasizing on the technical servicing we are providing to our customers. We do have a service department
