Surge Protection:Safety for Sewage Plants.
DEHN – Competence in Lightning and Surge Protection.
Surges disturb processes.Sewage plants play a key role in the useof the resource water. With a chain ofmutually dependent processes, theymanage to filter the toxic substancesbound in the dirty wastewater andregain drinking water.
Various measuring and analysis methodswith extensive system technology are usedfor process control.Damage to this equipment can disturbthe process sustainably and even lead toa threat to the environment. Therefore, its availability deserves high priority.
Power supply, for example, as wellas measuring and control systems of sewageplants are threatened by damage due tosurges or direct lightning strokes. Surgesare caused by distant or close lightningstrokes, but also by switching operations(e.g. when switching heavy loads).

DEHN – Lightning and Surge Protection for Sewage Plants from one Source.
Illustration of a sewage plant.Sewage plants are especially exposed to therisks of atmospheric discharges due to theirlarge sizes. Furthermore, interference pulsescan spread well due to the widely networkedparts of the plant.
A lightning protection system consists ofexternal lightning protection, internal light-ning protection and lightning equipotentialbonding. External lightning protectionprotects buildings from fire or mechanicaldamage by lightning. Internal lightningprotection is supposed to prevent hazardoussparking within the building.
Lightning equipotential bonding reduces thepotential differences caused by lightningcurrents. As a part of the lightning currentflows, for example, also via the externalelectrical supply lines of the sewage plant andcan thus damage them, the lines have to beprotected by SPDs with lightning currentcarrying capability.Surge arresters reliably protect terminaldevices from conducted surges. The lightning protection zones concept isa comprehensive catalogue of protectionmeasures. And it helps to optimise theavailability of the installation.
Example: Intermeshed earth-termination system.A lightning equipotential bonding system should be established foreach part or building of the plant. Intermeshing these installationsreduces conducted partial lightning currents among the parts of theplant. Powerful surge arresters minimise the risk due to surges.
The following standards apply to the earth-termination system:IEC 62305-4: “Electrical and electronic systems within structures”prEN 50114: “Materials and size requirements for earth electrodes from the corrosion point of view”
Know-how – Designing aids for lightningand surge protection. The designer of the installation sets thebasis for the later availability of the sewageplant. He takes effective protectionmeasures against harmful surges. For thispurpose, he applies important regulationswhich help to implement a complete pro-tection concept. At the design stage, both the external lightning protectionsystem, earthing system with equipotentialbonding and effective protection in caseof surges are taken into consideration.

Example 5: PROFIBUS PA Ex (i)Surge protection for the level measuring equipment
The level measuring sensor used in hazardous zonesis connected to the sewage plant control via anintrinsically safe PROFIBUS PA unitAs there is no external power supply, only the bus connector has to be protectedEx (i)-type SPDs have to be installed into metalenclosures upstream of the measuring sensorShielding within the hazardous zone has to be performed in accordance with IEC 60079-14
Example 6: Switchgear cabinets with programmablelogic control (PLC)
Surge protection for the sewage plant controlLines between parts of the plant have to be pro-tected with the same types of SPDs as the connectedmeasuring pointsAt the entry of the switchgear cabinet, the cableshields have to be earthed with low impedanceand lines have to be protected by SPDsThe SPDs have to be arranged clearly to avoidinstallation errorsIf lightning current arresters for the supply systemsare installed centrally, e.g. into the low-voltage maindistribution board, the switchgear cabinets haveonly to be protected by surge arrestersLines within the building of the sewage plant control also have to be integrated into the protection concept
Easy SPD testing due to LifeCheck®
BLITZDUCTOR XT with integrated LifeCheck makesmaintenance very easy. LifeCheck uses modern RFIDtechnology for monitoring protective circuits and forcommunication. Independent from downtimes of thesystem, LifeCheck allows for quick and easy testing ofSPDs by means of a portable testing device of typeDRC LC M3+.
LifeCheck® Condition Monitoring
The LifeCheck technology also allows for the permanentmonitoring of the surge arresters. This technology allowsto continuously monitor up to 300 pairs in a system ofup to 15 MCM monitoring devices. Faults will be signalledeither by remote signalling contact to a superior systemcontrol or they can be registered by a PC software whichcan be provided free of charge. Considering the hazardof lightnings and surges, you will be sure to have utmostprotection and availability with this technology.
