B. Reason Problem: An operator has reported an inability to perform the door emergency

removal test after incorporation of ModSum 80900267 (Service Bulletin 8-52-58).

Cause: Completion of the door emergency removal test was prevented by fouling of the door latch on the strike plate and latch block.

Solution: This ModSum / Service Bulletin provides a new latch block and elongation of the slot in the striker plate.

C. Description

The procedures in this service bulletin give the instructions to do the tasks that follow:

- The flight compartment door is removed

- The strike plate and latch block are removed from the door right hand post

- A new latch block is bonded to the door right hand post with a kept retaining plate and screws

- The slot in the strike plate is elongated and the plate is re-installed with existing fasteners

- The flight compartment door is installed and tested

- Log entries are made

Bombardier Inc. highly recommend that ModSum 80900267 be incorporated at the earliest opportunity unless otherwise directed by the operator's airworthiness authority.

3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

A. Procedure

(1) In aircraft with ModSum 8Q900267 (Service Bulletin 8-52-58) already incorporated, open the flight compartment door.

(2) Remove strike plate 9701109-1 from the right hand door post and keep with fasteners.

(3) Elongate the slot in the strike plate as shown in Figure 1. Touch up bared metal. Re-identify the strike plate as 826337 -101.

(4) Carefully remove existing latch block (bonded and on pins) from the right hand door post. Do not damage the surrounding decorative finish. Keep the plate and fasteners and discard the latch block.

(5) Clean door post and bond new latch block 821590-065 to existing location (pins) with adhesive EC 1357N or equivalent (refer to Maintenance Manual (AMM) Chapter 20-25-55 or Task 20-25-55-390-801).

(6) Paint bared spot on door edge. Use equivalent to primer 9185 (base 414.12 with hardener 402 and thinner 62). Finish with Grey Cloud DA 2.8 (base 404.12 with hardener 400 and thinner 62).

(7) Apply a fillet of sealant RTV 102 or RTV 732 or equivalent around all edges of the latch block (refer to AMM Chapter 20-25-50 or Task 20-25-50-300-801 ).

(8) Install reworked strike plate 826337-101 with kept screws NAS514P1032-8.

~ Do the following Door Removal Function Test:

(a) / With the door in its closed and latched position, pull the upper two hinge J pins down and place the red pegs in their detentes.

C9J/ Push the door aft until the hinges are clear of the door and allow the door ,n to drop off the bottom hinge. This may be assisted by pushing down on

~· , J the red strap located about the mid-point of the door.

Rotate the door to starboard, releasing it from the latch, taking care not to damage the surrounding decor panels.

Re-install flight compartment door.

Applicability

(c) This AD applies to Bombardier Model DHC-8-102, -103 , -106, -201, -202, -301, -311 , -314,

and -315 airplanes, certificated in any category; serial numbers 003 through 557 inclusive; equipped

with cockpit door installation part numbers (P/Ns) identified in Table 1 of this AD.

(d) This AD results from a report that, during structural testing of the cockpit door, the lower hinge block rotated and caused the mating hinge pin to disengage, and caused excessive door deflection . We are issuing this AD to prevent failure of a door attachment, which could result in uncontrolled release of the cockpit door under certain fuselage decompression conditions, and possible damage to the aircraft structure.

(e) You are responsible for having the actions required by this AD performed within the compliance times specified, unless the actions have already been done.

Modification

(f) Within 24 months after the effective date of this AD, modify the cockpit door from a single­point attachment to a two-point attachment in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of the applicable service bulletin in Table 2 of this AD.

Bombardier Service Bulletin 8-52-58 refers to Bombardier Series 100/300 Mods um 8Q900267 as an additional source of service information for reworking and installing the cockpit door, and reworking the lower hinge attachment to provide a downward-facing pin with a two-point attachment.

Prior/Concurrent Requirements

(g) Prior to or concurrently with the modification in paragraph (f) of this AD, do the applicable actions specified in Table 3 of this AD according to a method approved by either the Manager, New York Aircraft Certification (ACO), FAA; or Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) (or its delegated agent). One approved method is the applicable modification or Modsum listed in the "One approved method for doing these actions" column of Table 3 of this AD.

Actions Done In Accordance With Previous Revision of Service Bulletin

(h) Actions done before the effective date of this AD in accordance with Bombardier Service

Bulletin 8-52-54, dated May 12, 2004, are acceptable for compliance with the corresponding requirements in paragraph (f) of this AD.

Alternative Methods of Compliance (AMOCs)

(i)( I) The Manager, New York Aircraft Certification Office, FAA, has the authority to approve AMOCs for this AD, if requested in accordance with the procedures found in 14 CFR 39 .19.

(2) Before using any AMOC approved in accordance with§ 39.19 on any airplane to which the

AMOC applies, notify the appropriate principal inspector in the FAA Flight Standards Certificate Holding District Office.

(j) Canadian airworthiness directive CF-2005-34, dated August 29, 2005, also addresses the

subject of this AD.

The customer shall indemnify Austrian Airlines/ Tyrolean Airways, its agents and employees against any legal liability for claims or suits, including costs and expenses incidental thereto, arising from or connected with the perlonmance of the services or the supply of goods by Austrian Airlines I Tyrolean Airways, unless such liability is due to the wilful misconduct of Austrian Airlines I Tyrolean Airways, which has to be proven by the customer.
