Messagefrom theDeanOver the course of the academic year, students participating in activities under the umbrella of the largest business student society – the DeGroote Commerce Society- will take advantage of the full “DeGroote Experience.”

The DeGroote Experience is one that combines classroom learning with experiential learning. Our innovative approach to education and training begins in the lecture hall, where students learn the fundamental concepts of business. Then, through the Commerce Internship Pro-gram and initiatives and challenges hosted by student clubs, students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to practical business situations and gain valuable hands-on experi-ence, as well as meet industry professionals.

I encourage you to partner with DeGroote students through sponsorship and participation in events and projects. Your support will enable our students to put their education to the test, building their experience and preparing them for success. And it will give you and your company a glimpse of the talent entering the workforce, and allow you to continue building a network among young professionals.

On behalf of the DeGroote School and our students, I thank you for your valued partnership.

Messagefrom thePresidentDear Prospective Partners,

Welcome to the DeGroote Commerce Society’s Corporate Sponsorship Package. This year marks the 21st anniversary that our school of business has been under the DeGroote name and I am excited andproud to present you with the opportunity to join usas a partner this year.

I’d like you to take a minute and think back to your post-secondary education. Hopefully great memories come back to you. In any case, allow me to quickly recap. University is a time where great friends are made, unforget-table memories are had, and, somehow, we manage to learn a thing or two along the way. The years spent at university are a very important and extremely influential time for every individual. These are the defining years for many students and they affect us in countless ways.

The DeGroote School of Business strives to create future business leaders. I am the first to admit that there is always more to learn, but one thing I am certain of is that modern day business leaders are not created solely from the education they receive but also from the experiences they go through. The DeGroote Commerce Society understands this, and we promote this fundamental message to our large student body of more than 2,200 students. We operate as an umbrella organization overseeing and funding almost all commerce student initiatives within our school, providing professional development, academic assis-tance, social opportunities, and everything that happens outside of the classroom. As a society, we know that the opportunities we provide are what students need to succeed. You will have the chance to read about the many services our society offers in the remainder of this package.

I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to review what we have to offer. Your sup-port would provide many more opportunities to our student body. If you have any questions about this package or our operations at all, do not hesitate to contact our Vice President Corporate Relations or myself for more information. All the best,

Conrad ThompsonPresident & [email protected]

OrientationWeek

The DeGroote Commerce Society is proud to present the first annual Orientation week hosted at the DeGroote School of Business. This unique week follows McMaster’s Orientation Week and is designed to introduce first year students to the DeGroote School of Business and help them transition to university life.

Faculty Day Orientation Day is one of the DeGroote School of Business’s most anticipated events attracting over 500 of DeGroote’s newest commerce students.

This event integrates members of the corporate community and upper year DSB mentors into academic, social and personal development activities for first year students. The day provides the incoming students with important information about the services that the DeGroote Commerce Society and faculty offer as well as showcasing over 15 different student clubs and associations. Involvement in DeGroote’s Orientation Day allows your company to learn more about the McMaster University experience and promote your message to students who are just beginning their career paths. We hope to include you in our Orientation festivities this year!

The DeGroote Commerce Society is pleased to present its annual Academic Awareness Conference (AAC), to be held in the month of October 2013.

The Conference gives Commerce students at McMaster a chance to explore the various sectors of business. For many, choosing a specialization is a challenging decision, made even more difficult with the vast amount of unorganized information presented to students. The purpose of the AAC is to expose the attendees to the different streams of Commerce the DeGroote School of Business (DSB) has to offer, and to provide solid information for the convenience of students. The Academic Awareness Conference 2013 will cover five main areas of focus: Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Information systems.

Each of the five sessions will include detailed information on possible career choices, course selection, and extra-curricular involvement relating to the different areas of Commerce.

Students attending the sessions will have a chance to hear from industry specialists, as well as DSB professors and associated clubs. Also, students will have the opportunity to network with industry professionals that pertain to their areas of interest. These sessions will

teach the students how to leverage their current resources and opportunities to shape their futures.

We ask for your support by sponsoring this year’s conference. By doing so, you will not only have the opportunity to create awareness of your brand and promote your organization to the students of DeGroote, but also provide a beneficial learning experience for future graduates.

The contributions made by sponsors in previous years have allowed the event to be an incredible success, with positive feedback from students, professors, sponsors as well as industry professionals. We hope that your potential involvement will do just the same for this year’s conference. We greatly appreciate any contribution you can make and thank you for supporting student career and academic development.

DeGroote Business Challenge

The DeGroote Business Challenge is a case competition offered every year by the DeGroote School of Business. This experiential learning opportunity allows commerce students to broaden their understanding of business concepts and develop their problem solving skills.

For this competition, students have the option of engaging in case studies based on human resources, marketing or accounting. The DeGroote Business Challenge is set up to allow teams of two students to spend three days analyzing cases from the Harvard Business School. Competing with their fellow peers in the undergraduate commerce program, the students present their innovative ideas to a panel of industry professionals.

The DeGroote Business Challenge is an excellent way for students to take classroom knowledge and apply it to real world problems. Students at DeGroote network with industry professionals and learn from real world applications while gaining confidence in their business skills and abilities. Sponsors of this event can establish relationships with our most ambitious students who actively seek opportunities to expand their knowledge beyond the textbook curriculum. It is also an opportunity to establish your brand within DeGroote while influencing the direction of McMaster’s student careers.

Soft Skills Seminar Series

The Soft Skills Committee is here to help commerce students build their skill set on topics not traditionally covered in the classroom. We create a space where students can hear professionals share their experiences and how certain skills have helped them in their career.

Some of our previous speakers have included former Dean Paul Bates on the topic of leadership, Herb Holst from the Holst Equation on networking, Adam Oldfield from FPM3.COM Marketing on presentation skills, and Danielle Little from the Centre for Business and Career Development on improving your resume.

Past years have been a huge success for the Soft Skills Committee with great feedback from many students. We believe that commerce students have the opportunity to learn the basic soft skills of business to enable for succeed not only as a member of a workplace, but also as an individual. To develop these skills, we intend to continue to hold interesting and engaging seminars. As a sponsor of the Soft Skills Committee, you will receive verbal mention during the seminars, as well as your company logo on posters, the DeGroote Commerce website, and student brochures.

DeGroote Impact

DeGroote Impact employs large numbers of DeGroote students to implement numerous charitable activities run throughout the school year. These events and programs provide the entire DeGroote population with fun, and engaging learning experiences which will help them to not only get the most out of their time at university, but will aid them throughout the future career paths which they choose.

Due to the fact that experience is crucial before one enters the workforce, DeGroote Impact ultimately provides McMaster students with numerous opportunities to not only give back to their community, but to also better prepare themselves for their upcoming careers. With the help of the DeGroote Commerce Society, and various external sponsors, DeGroote Impact is able to continually implement successful charitable events which raise awareness of various social issues, while also building the community in which we reside.

The commerce formal is an annual event that is proudly run by the DeGroote Commerce Society. The DeGroote Commerce Formal Committee is responsible for the planning and facilitation of the event in early January. The Commerce formal is open to commerce students across all years is a chance for undergraduate commerce students to mingle with their fellow classmates and get to know one another outside of the school.

The event is especially meaningful for first year students as it is their first opportunity to meet everyone in all levels of their faculty since Welcome Week in September. It is anticipated that this event will continue to grow and add more value to both the students and corporate potential participants. The event is an amazing opportunity for the Commerce Faculty to meet one another and have a relaxing and unwinding night. There is a total of 2000 commerce student currently studying at MAC; we hope to appeal to the majority of those students to join us for a wonderful night.
