The Copperbelt University (CBU) was established by the Act of Parliament No. 19 of 1987 and accredited by the Higher Education Authority. It is located in Kitwe, along Jambo Drive, Riverside in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. Besides the conventional university education, CBU also offers competitive Open Distance Learning/ Education (ODL/E) programmes that lead to the award of certificates, diplomas, and degrees through the Directorate of Distance Education and Open Learning (DDEOL).

Understanding the multifold and inter-related causes of violence and conflict, and creating the conditions for moving out of authoritarianism into a culture of peace and democracy, remains a major challenge in the world today, more particularly in Africa. The Dag Hammarskjöld Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies (DHIPS) at the Copperbelt University is the Copperbelt University is the forbearer of the Dag Hammarskjöld Chair of Peace, Human Rights and Conflict Management established on 11 November 2002 but officially launched on 26th February 2003. The initiative was in memory of Dag Hammarkjold, the Second Secretary-General of the United Nations who was killed in 1961 in an aircraft crash in the vicinity of the City of Ndola, the Provincial Capital of the Copperbelt Province. He was on a United Nations Mission to bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Congo, later to become the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
