Division of Engineering Technologies and Computer Sciences — Curriculum Code: 2301Will Earn Upon Program Completion: Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree
Upon completion of this program, graduates willbe able to:
� Demonstrate knowledge of basic construction prin-ciples and materials, including concrete, steel andwood;
� Demonstrate understanding of architectural andengineering drawings including the concept ofscale and orthographic projection;
� Design various architectural projects including sitelayout and building features;
� Design a structure utilizing functional as well asaesthetic considerations;
� Demonstrate knowledge of architectural history,especially in ways that it influences architecturaldesign today; and
� Utilize computer software applications such asword processing, spreadsheets, basic program-ming, and mathematical computing.
Why major in Architectural Technology?The program prepares students for employment inthe architectural profession. Instruction is offered inthe architectural design studio, and students havethe opportunity to express their ideas via conceptu-al and real-life architectural projects. Jobs in thefield are typically found in architectural consultingfirms, and in the architectural departments of cor-porations and state and federal agencies. Job titlesrange from construction site inspector to CAD operator.
If I major in Architectural Technology, can I transfer to an upper division college or university?Yes. The curriculum is designed to parallel the firsttwo years of architectural study offered in the fiveyear programs leading to the bachelor of architec-ture (B.Arch.) degree. Several area colleges anduniversities offer architecture programs includingnearby New Jersey Institute of Technology. With theB.Arch. degree, you become eligible to sit for thearchitect’s license exam.
Are there any requirements I must satisfy before I start taking courses in my major?All new students must take a basic skills competen-cy test. Based on the results of the test, you maybe required to take developmental courses in read-ing, English, and/or mathematics.
How long will it take for me to complete this degree?If you do not need developmental coursework andyou attend full time, you can complete the degree intwo years. Part time students can complete the pro-gram in three or four years.

� Apply principles of engineering graphics to preparedetailed drawings using CAD software;
� Demonstrate computer literacy in the use of vari-ous CAD systems;
� Use American National Standards Institute (ANSI)protocol for sizing and tolerancing of mating parts;
� Apply Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing(GD&T) techniques to engineering design; and
� Utilize 3D solid modeling CAD systems to createmechanical components and generate assemblydesigns.
Why major in Computer Aided DesignTechnology?Computer Aided Design (CAD) involves the prepa-ration of engineering drawings using specialty com-puter software. In recent years, CAD has becomethe preferred means of drawing and illustrating in allengineering related fields. The Computer AidedDesign Technology certificate program is designedto provide students with the knowledge and skillsneeded to effectively use CAD in any professionalenvironment. Fields in which CAD is used as abasic tool include civil, mechanical, and manufac-turing engineering, architecture, surveying, and con-struction.
