In addition to supporting the activities of the consulting groups, the Specialist Expertise Groups provide specialized consulting services directly to a large number of clients. The Research, Building Physics and Energy Groups in The Netherlands and in Germany act as initiators and sponsors of innovations inside our organization, with a particular focus on research and modeling in the area of sustainable energy supply and energy effi ciency, and integrated development of new insights into building physics and installation engineering. Our group of highly experienced senior consultants assume responsibility for a specifi c client group, consulting practice or fi eld of expertise, and assist the consulting groups in carrying out large, complex projects. Our “One Firm Principle” and our corporate culture facilitate the easy transfer of people, projects and knowledge between groups and offi ces. In this way, the interests of the client and the quality of the work are fostered rather than obstructed by our internal organizational structure, and we can successfully carry out every project with a fl exible, knowledgeable, and dedicated project team – in the fi ve countries where we are based and elsewhere.

Quality AssuranceDeerns is certifi ed in accordance with ISO 9001, and we regularly verify compliance with our corporate quality standards through internal audits conducted by authoritative audit teams. The quality of our engineering consultancy work is further warranted by nine ‘Technology Mentors’: experienced technical specialists with a profound knowledge of a specifi c fi eld, who keep their colleagues informed of new developments, key data and special aspects within their specifi c fi eld of expertise and provide the basic knowledge that engineers must master in this fi eld. Our Technology Mentors are:Richard Stabel Construction SupervisionMaurice Quaring Hot MediaAndre Hazebroek Low Voltage SystemsRichard Roos Sanitary EngineeringPiet Bijkerk Cooling EngineeringRalph van den Berg Lighting DesignKees van Krimpen High Voltage & Power SystemsHan Berkhout HVAC DesignRichard Striekwold Purifi ed Gases & Liquids Vacant Sprinkler Systems

International OrganizationDeerns started its development from a purely Dutch Firm into an international one in 2001, with the start of the offi ce in Berlin (P2B). Since then, further development has taken place in Germany, the United Arab Emirates, the United States of America and, most recently, in Spain. We may expect other new offi ces to develop, especially in Europe. Currently, Deerns closely cooperates with several similar consultancy fi rms in Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom.

This international development will have an increasing impact on the internal organization of our work: successful international cooperation will require adaptations in internal communication (language, formats, style), knowledge exchange and codifi cation, project and account management, career development, etc. Step by step we will make these adaptations, and in parallel we will ask a growing number of professionals to follow suit, modifying their personal professional behavior to match the changing demands.

AlliancesDeerns has a number of cooperative relationships with other enterprises in the professional services sector. The most important relationships are the following.

Econcern

Econcern is an energy systems consulting, development and trading company whose mission is to accomplish a sustainable energy supply for everyone. Deerns has had a fruitful collaborative relationship with Econcern for a number of years now. Cooperative projects include the development of ocean-water cooling technology for beach hotels in Curaçao and Aruba, which allows a considerable reduction in CO2 emissions to be achieved, the development of sustainable energy provision for Schiphol Airport, the design of ‘zero energy buildings’, and a range of other projects.

Key Figures for Business Year 2008In its eightieth year of operation, Deerns again achieved growth in sales and earnings (Figure a). The autonomous growth in revenue of more than 10% can be attributed to increased project bookings in both of our largest markets: Germany and The Netherlands. Earnings from operations increased accor-dingly (Figure b) due to good results both in The Netherlands and in Germany. Project intake was well distributed over our client base (Figure c). The largest volume of new projects was received in the offi ce buildings and mixed-use building segment, despite the poor state of the commercial property development market. Two examples are the headquarters building of the TNT Group (developed by real estate developer OVG) and the brownfi eld ‘Overhoeks district’, both in Amsterdam. At the turn of the year, Schmidt Reuter was awarded an especially large project for the renovation and new construction of the Cologne Opera Building. In The Netherlands as well as in Germany, the diffi cult labor market situation posed the greatest challenge to our develop-ment. As we insisted on maintaining high quality standards for our employees, the number of new hires was limited. Nevertheless, the total number of employees increased slightly in the Nether-lands (Figure d). For the fi rst time in a long while, we succeeded in fi lling all vacant management positions, including the appoint-ment of our fi rst female manager in 2008: Anke Matijssen (33), an auronautics and space engineer, assumed the role of Deputy Airports Group Manager effective January 1st 2009.The large-scale celebration of our 80th anniversary, with a day-long conferences program and festive reception for our clients last spring, and a splendid staff party this fall, did not distract us from our strategy. Further improvement of our operational quality, our fi rst strategic focus, once again received new impetus in 2008. In The Netherlands, we took the initiative to establish a new team of “outside eyes”, who will critically examine the execution of a selection of our most risky projects. This team is composed of highly experienced building services experts from outside Deerns: Özdal Atici (partner and senior manager of the consultancy fi rm Abstract Management), Freek Boonstoppel (former senior manager and founder of the engineering consultancy fi rm Boonstoppel), Frits van der Helm (former senior manager of GTI Installatietechniek), George Müller Sr. (retired associate director of Deerns), and Ruud van Silfhout (former senior manager of Burgers Ergon). Deerns is also working to further improve quality by means of targeted training courses. In 2008, e.g., around 90 Dutch employees attended a Basic Project Management course developed in-house and taught by tutors from our own professional staff.

The second strategic focus, differentiation of our range of services, also received attention in 2008. The development of the Building Physics group proceeded apace, and a considera-ble amount of innovative work was done in the energy area, both in The Netherlands and in Germany. The cooperative relationship with Econcern, a company that concentrates on the develop-ment of a sustainable energy supply, was intensifi ed with around twenty joint projects in 2008.

In addition, we worked on our third strategic priority: internatio-nal development. Promising contacts were established in the USA, and preparations were made for a new branch in Spain (Barcelona) which was established recently. Exploratory studies of development opportunities in the United Kingdom and France were also carried out. The outstanding evolution in Germany more than compensated for the stagnation of business in our Dubai branch.

Deerns as a Sustainable FirmThe concept of sustainability occupies a prominent position on every political agenda. This is good news, because Deerns has been practicing sustainability for many decades already. Many of our projects include energy-saving solutions that work: realistic and feasible concepts for a sustainable energy supply. Thanks to these innovative concepts, considerable reductions in CO2 emissions have been achieved over the years in the buildings we designed.

One of the recent projects in which Deerns incorporated sustainable technology is the new head offi ce of Reem Emirates

Aluminum in Abu Dhabi. Among other novelties, this building features fl oor cooling, an extremely innovative climate façade, and a clever daylight system: optimal utilization of selective incoming daylight reduces the need for artifi cial light and thus saves energy. This project received the prestigious MEP Middle East Award, which is given to projects that demonstrate outstanding innovation and achievement in electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems. In the words of the jury report: “This project successfully integrates several building

components and technologies, enabling energy savings of 40% compared to a conventional design.”Until recently, Chinese developers gave little or no attention to energy savings and CO2 emissions. Suntech Power

Holdings, a leading international player in solar panel technology, set stringent requirements for energy effi ciency and the indoor climate of its new offi ce building and production complex in Wuxi. By employing a mixture of sustainable energy generation and energy systems, Deerns enabled the implementation of a practi-cally energy-neutral design. Thanks to the use of various innovative concepts, including heat and cold storage in aquifers, heat pumps and a façade with fully integrated solar panels, the large building consumes almost no external energy and serves as an example in China. It is one of the four Dutch projects reported in the EVD yearbook Made in Holland as examples of innovative, energy-conscious designs.A project that has not yet been implemen-

ted but was well received at a congress in Dubai is a skyscraper that, despite its location in a hot and humid equatorial climate, has only a small cooling load and is thus energy-neutral.

This Burj al Shams (“Tower of the Sun”) is a conceptual design for a 200m high- rise building, which owes its energy-neutrality to a range of innovations in building physics, building engineering and building services systems. The tower produces its own shadow most of the day, thanks to its elegant shape that minimizes the façade surface area’s exposure to the sun. The received solar heat renders the hollow vertical ribs along the façade into solar chimneys that discharge ventilation air.

Deerns also designs datacenters to be as ‘green’ as possible. Reducing energy demand takes top priority. While a few years ago the IT sector still regarded itself as the most environmentally friendly industry, more accurate insight now indicates that the information technology sector is responsible for two percent of global CO2 emissions (source: Gartner). It is thus time to think about measures

Prospects for 2009Needless to say, Deerns is facing a challenging year.We were scarcely affected by the global economic decline in 2008; we have a reasonably good number of new projects booked for 2009. However, there is a real chance of a downturn because some of our private-sector and semi-public clients will reduce or postpone their property investments due to diffi culties in obtaining fi nancing. The course of the banking crisis is so uncertain that there is little point in making forecasts. In any case, we will be on the alert in 2009 and carefully strive to steer clear from any perils that may arise. The facilities that we have available for this purpose will again undergo considerable improvement in early 2009. Three of the Dutch offi ces, Groningen, Maastricht and Eindhoven, will relocate to more spacious premises (in Eindhoven, nicknamed the “City of Light”, the new offi ce will be located in a monumen-tal former Philips building), and all of our Dutch offi ces will be accessible by telephone via new numbers with one ‘area code’: (+31-)88. Finally, Deerns will keep an eye out for major strategic opportunities, regardless of all economic diffi culties.

which can reverse the trend. One of the solutions that can make the sector more sustainable is our innovative concept of a “green datacenter”. This radically new design concept was nominated in 2008 for ‘De Vernufteling’ (a Dutch prize awarded each year to the engineering consultancy with the most innovative project), and it has been further refi ned since then. It allows for energy savings of eighty percent in datacenters.

Deerns has also been active in the health care sector for many years. In 2008, two newly completed hospitals were admitted to the top rank of energy-effi -cient hospitals in the Netherlands: Deventer Hospital and Martini Hospital. For the Deventer Hospital, we designed an integrated energy and climate concept which results in a high improvement in energy consumption - and a substantial

reduction in energy costs. Part of the concept is a long-term heat and cold storage system using deep wells. With this approach, the natural gas consump-tion of the hospital was reduced by approximately 90%, with corresponding fi nancial advantages. The direct use of well water as a cooling medium eliminated the need to invest in cooling equipment.

Energy savings are at least 10% of the total energy consumption. This concept too was nominated for the ‘De Vernufte-ling’ prize.

In the new Martini Hospital, the concept of industrial, fl exible and demountable (IFD) construction was a key factor in achieving layout adaptability, functional versatility, and size fl exibility. In addition, much attention was given to energy effi ciency and the well-being of patients by means of the interior environment and building technology. In order to enhance daylight utilization, relatively large window surfaces were created that increase daylight penetration into the building by 30%. The exterior of the building is a “double-skin” façade with an exterior surface composed entirely of glass, which provides acoustic insulation and creates a heat buffer around the building. The air in this space can be used as energy supply. In 2006, the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment awarded the Martini Hospital a grant of €530,000 (around $700,000) for this new, highly energy-effi cient building. In terms of energy savings, the new building scores 18% better than the standard energy performance level, and compared

to the renovated existing part of the hospital, energy consumption decreased by an impressive 48%.One of the projects for which Deerns was awarded the ‘ID-NL’ innovation prize a few years ago is the design of the seawater heating system that will supply heat to 790 residences in the Duindorp district of The Hague. This unique project marks the fi rst application of heat extraction from seawater. A gas distribution network in the district is not necessary. The seawater heating system was offi cially commis-sioned by Jacqueline Cramer, Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment, at a formal dedication ceremony on January 12th 2009.
