PASSAGE A
THE DARK CONTINENT
Until the latter half of the nineteenth Century, the Europeans knew little about the interior of Africa. By then much had been learnt about America, Asia and Australia. Because the Europeans knew little about Africa then, this was the Chief reason why Stanley, the British explorer called Africa ‘The Dark Continent’. Stanley explored the Congo Basin. The Stanley Falls on this river is called after his name. Most of the inhabitants of Africa are black in complexion and perhaps this was the second reason the words Dark Continent were applied to Africa. One may ask why the inland part of Africa was unknown until about one hundred years ago. Many are of the opinion that this was because the natives of Africa were not friendly towards the Europeans. Until then, Arab slave
raiders had been enslaving Africans. This made many Negroes look upon all white people as slave dealers. But we must not forget the difficulties in exploring Africa. The Sahara Desert, the rapids on rivers and the thick forests made travelling very difficult. The damp, heat, mosquitoes and tsetse flies caused illness to European explorers. 1. Who called Africa The Dark Continent? (a) Europeans (b) Explorers (c) Stanley (d) The British (e) The Americans 2. What was his chief reason for calling Africa this name?
(a) Because of a bad climate (b) The Arabs had enslaved Africans (c) Because most of the continent was unexplored by Europeans (d) The Europeans were white (e) Other continents are nearer Europe than Africa.
3. What part of Africa was explored by Stanley? (a) The Congo Basin (b) The African Coast (c) Near the Stanley Falls (d) The forested part of Africa (e) The interior of Africa.
4. Give the second reason why Africa was called The Dark Continent (a) Coal is mined in Africa (b) There are rivers and deserts (c) Africa is in the interior (d) Its people are black in complexion (e) There are many dark animals in Africa. 5. What do many people think was the reason why Africa was unknown for a long time? (a) The Arabs enslaved many Africans (b) The natives were unfriendly to the Europeans (c) The Arab Slave raiders were wicked (d) Explorers were too busy in other Countries (e) The Sahara desert was too big to cross.
PASSAGE B There are very few children who have not seen the principal kinds of poultry kept in this country: fowls, ducks, geese, and turkeys. Fowls, of course, are the commonest kind to be seen. They are kept as a rule for the sake of their eggs which make excellent food. A single hen will lay as many as one hundred and fifty eggs a year, the greatest number in April and May and the fewest in November and December. Those who keep fowls feed them on corn or mash which consists of bran and barley meal mixed with a little oil. The corner of the cottage garden is often railed off to make a chicken run. If you watch the hens, you will see them teaching the tiny chicks to feed. The
father-bird seems to take no notice of all of the chicks, but looks after the mother-hen very well. The cock-bird will scratch and dig grubs and worms for his family, and when the food is given to him he will at once call the hens, and will not touch a morsel himself till they have finished eating. He also keeps good orders in his family and should the hens quarrel, or the young cockerel spar the fight, he will strut up to them and quickly restore order. So you see that although the hens give us eggs we so much enjoy, the cock play his part too, and play it well. QUESTIONS

back to their homes.

PASSAGE B
THE BLIND MAN AND THE LAME MAN
There were two men who lived together in one hut. One was blind and the
other was lame. There was famine in that land and all were hungry. These two men
were hungry also. As they sat in their hut one day, the lame man saw a troop of
monkeys jumping from one tree to another at a short distance away. He thought of
monkey stew and groaned.
‘What is the matter with you friend, are you not well?’, asked the blind man.
‘Oh! I am well enough, but I am hungry. If I could only walk, I would shoot a
monkey and cook a tasty stew’.
The blind man laughed. ‘I laugh to hide my hunger. My stomach is empty too
but the bush is also empty of game. The hunters in this village go out daily and find
nothing to shoot. Where then would you find monkeys?’
‘They are right before us as we sit here’, said the lame man. I can see monkeys
jumping about on the trees in front of our hut’.
The blind man became convinced and he asked the lame man to climb on his
shoulders and direct him where to go and when to stop. The lame man got on the
blind man’s shoulders and directed his steps. They came to where the monkeys
were and the lame man told the blind man to stop. Boom! The lame man fired the

PART A, SECTION 1 (OBJECTIVES)
PASSAGE A
A Visit to the Zoo
My first visit to the zoo was in the company of my classmates with our
teachers. It was organized to mark the end of term. We took off from the
school at 10.20 a.m. The school bus had a capacity for thirty-six passengers
but we were forty-seven in number; so, some of us had to overlap one another
and this we did with some excitement. Amidst songs and chattering, we left
the school compound.
The journey to the University of Ibadan Zoological Gardens from our school
took one hour. When we arrived at the zoo, the manager was on hand to
receive us. He gave us a guide to take us around. Some of the animals were
friendly, some were hostile. The gorilla was the first spectacular animal we
saw. Initially, it sat quietly in a corner. One of our teachers got some bananas
from me and threw them at the gorilla. It caught the bananas one by one and
ate them. He looked at us for more. There was none. One of us picked a pebble
and threw it at the gorilla. It responded by throwing the pad of the bananas
back at us. We were angry.

PASSAGE B
Oxygen
Wherever we go we must have air; for without it we cannot live. We need it at
night when we are asleep as well as in the daytime. Men, who go to the moon
and deep-sea divers, have to take air with them in special containers.
Air has more than one kind of gas in it. The gas which is important to us is
called oxygen.
About one-fifth of the air is oxygen. When we breathe, we take some of the
oxygen into our bodies. The oxygen meets our blood in our lungs. Our blood
then carries the oxygen all over our bodies.
Fish needs oxygen just as we do in order to live. Some of the gas is present in
water. Fish take oxygen in through their gills.

SECTION 1 (COMPREHENSION)
Read the two passages below carefully and answer the questions that

same letters as the answers you have chosen.
PASSAGE A There was an old man who had three sons. These three brothers did not love
one another as brothers should but were always quarrelling, fighting and
abusing one another. The old man was very unhappy about the behavior of his
sons and thought of every possible way of making them change their bad
ways. As he lay on his sick bed, he called all his sons to him. He sent his
younger son to bring three sticks. When he had brought them, the old man
tied the sticks together and gave them to the eldest son and asked him to
break them. He tried, but could not as the sticks were too strong to break. The
second son also tried and failed. So did the third son.

PASSAGE B
HOW LIVING THINGS GROW
When living things grow old, changes take place very gradually in their
appearance, especially in man. The skin becomes wrinkled and the hair turns
grey. An old man’s memory becomes poor, and he cannot use his limbs so
well. This happens in all warm blooded creatures - mammals and birds. They
lose energy and are not able to adapt themselves to conditions around them.
As they get older, most creatures are less able to adapt themselves to changes
in their surroundings.
They can no longer cope with certain conditions which are unsuitable. This
makes them more open to diseases. For example, too much cold or too little
food leaves the aged more open to sicknesses than the young ones.
Among mammals there appears to be a link between their sizes and their
lifespan. Smaller animals get older more quickly. Elephants usually live for 70
years, horses up to 40 years, cows up to30 years, dogs up to 20 years, while
mice live up to 4 years .Also it appears that the creatures with the bigger
brains tend to live longer. Man, whose brain is the biggest, usually lives longer
than the elephants.
