Deep  Storage:  Enabling  the  Disrup4ve  Thinkers  in

Your  Organiza4on

• Clayton  Christensen,  “Disrup(ve  Technologies:  Catching  the  Wave”  • New  technology  disrupts…  • Old  technology  diminishes…

What  is  a  disrup4ve  technology?

Page 3: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

What  is  a  disrup4ve  user?

Page 4: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

• By  2020  the  Digital  Universe  will  hold  40  ZeLabytes  •  In  2012  68%  of  informa4on  was  created  and  consumed  by  individuals…  • More  informa4on  is  being  created  about  individuals  than  they  are  crea4ng  themselves

Why  the  need  for  deep  storage  –  really?

A  new  genera)on  of  technologies  and  architectures,  designed  to  economically  extract  value  from  very  large  volumes  of  a  wide  variety  of  data  by  enabling  high-‐velocity  capture,  discovery  and  analysis.

•  Correla4on  is  King  •  “What”  more  than  “Why”  •  No-‐delete  data  policies  • n  =  All

Why  keep  all  that  data?

Predic4ve!

Data  growth  is  not  being  driven  by  the  need  to  restore  the  past…  It’s  all  about  predic4ng  the  future

Page 6: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

• Running  analy4cs  against  a  data  set  in  order  to  understand  correla4ons

• N  =  All  •  This  is  the  use  model  driving  the  Digital  Revolu4on,  and  our  technologies  must  follow

Correla4on  is  King

What  Happened?

What  will  Happen  Next?

Why

Trading  “Why”  for  “What”

Page 7: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

Welcome  to  our  world…

Page 8: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

• Deep  storage  is  extremely  low-‐cost,  power  efficient  and  dense  storage  for  data  that  does  not  need  immediate  access.

• Deep  storage  is  accessed  over  open  interfaces  such  as  REST  interfaces  and  web  protocols.

• Data  in  deep  storage  is  stored  as  objects  that  are  self-‐describing  and  wriLen  in  an  open  file  format.

Deep  Storage  –  what  is  it  exactly?

Page 9: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

•  Intent  of  File  Systems  • Hierarchical  vs.  Flat  • Metadata

Object  Store  vs.  File  System

Page 10: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

File  Systems  are  “Nested”

•  Invented  30  years  ago  •  Much  overhead  to:

–  Allow  concurrent  access  –  Allow  read  &  write

•  Focus  on  “loca4on”  vs.  “content”  •  Great  for  real  4me  sharing  and  edi4ng  or  processing  •  Limita4ons  on  scaling,  indexing  and  searching

Page 11: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

Object  Stores  are  “Flat”  vs.  Hierarchical

Like  files,  objects  contain  data  Unlike  files,  objects  are  not  stored  in  hierarchy

Page 12: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

Each  object  has  a  unique  object  ID    •  Physical  loca4on  of  the  data  no  longer  maLers  •  Objects  can  be  moved  across  the  storage  pools  among  one

or  mul4ple  4ers  •  Data  can  be  stored  or  copied  within  an  Object  Store  thus

elimina4ng  the  need  to  con4nually  back  it  up

Page 13: Deep Storage Vision from Spectra Logic

Enables  search,  mining,  and  analy4cs  of  billions  of  objects  without  touching  physical  media

Metadata  and  physical  data  are  separated

Metadata

Cools  things  you  get  with  Deep  Storage…  •  REST  Interface

– Move  bulk  data  easily  with  a  modern  interface  &  sokware  clients

•  Persistent  – Keep  data  forever,  auto-‐migrate  across  formats  over  4me

•  Cost  Effec4ve  – A  frac4on  of  the  cost  of  disk,  save  budget  $$  for  other  projects

•  Efficient  – Significantly  reduce  floor  space,  power  and  cooling  costs

•  Secure  &  Reliable  – Data  will  always  be  readable  and  only  by  the  right  people

•  Easy  to  integrate/deploy  – No  storage  experts  needed,  significant  4me  and  OPEX  savings
