“I have had teachers near retirement tell me they were ready to call it quits because of erratic and inconsistent computer software. Not until after last summer when Deep Freeze was installed did they finally remember why they liked to teach. Computer issues sometimes used as much as 20 minutes of a teacher’s 45 minute period before Deep Freeze was deployed.”

- Chuck Taylor, San Juan Unified School District, CA

Deep Freeze Explained by Customers

Business vs. SchoolIn the education world, when a computer crashes...

the teacher goes back to teaching “the old fashioned way”ORthe students are expected to “double up” on computers that are still working

How do we calculate what is lost in the process?

How can teachers integrate technology into the classroom if they don’t have any confidence in it?

“Most people only respond when they are unhappy with a particular product. I thought I would take the time and say thank you for such wonderful software such as Deep Freeze Enterprise. I have been using the software for about a year and a half now and on the one hundred something computers it is installed on, not one has a single virus or spyware problem. Thank you for all the time you have saved me.”

- Daniel Harrison, Williamson County Library, TN

Deep Freeze Explained by Customers

Patron Privacy

Every FedEx Kinko’s nation-wide uses Deep Freeze, partly to ensure patron privacy by providing every patron with an absolutely ‘fresh’ computer.

This is something that is unique to Deep Freeze and cannot be replicated by running scripts deleting temp, clearing history files or restricting the patron with group policy-like solutions.

Q & A Break

Any Questions?

Page 10: Deep freezeadvancedoverview

Customization Code

Using the same Customization Code throughout the entire organization can centralize the configuration and deployment of Deep Freeze. The Customization Code is a unique identifier that completely encrypts all the Deep Freeze components, such as:

Configuration Administrator

Enterprise Console

Workstation Installation Files

Workstation Seed

Server Service Manager

Command Line Control tool (DFC)

Page 11: Deep freezeadvancedoverview

Password Management

Only Deep Freeze provides such a powerful level of password management.

Deep Freeze provides One Time Passwords which allow temporary and secure access to single protected workstations.

Page 12: Deep freezeadvancedoverview

Power Savings

IT will turn them off everyday & leave them on when required to do updates.

Delta and Vancouver school districts in BC, Canada, reduced electricity use by over 2,974,280 kilowatt hours a year, worth $179,000 in annual cost savings.

Shutting down computers also reduces the amount of heat produced, decreasing the schools’ cooling loads.Full case study: BC Hydro Case Study

Force a reboot every day to provide new users with the standard system configuration

All About Anti-Virus

Deep Freeze and Virus Attacks

Deep Freeze eliminates yesterday’s, today’s and tomorrow’s infections with every restart.

Fact: Most viruses require a restart in order to become active and do their “song & dance” so with Deep Freeze, upon restart, they are gone and never had a chance to do their “song & dance!”

Note: Faronics still recommends that you have Anti-Virus software installed since there are “worm” type viruses that activate immediately

Updating Anti-Virus Definitions

Use the Enterprise Console & set up Scheduled Maintenance periods at which time you can run a custom batch file to update anything you want.

Use your management solution & run Deep Freeze Command Line Control [DFC] to update.

Utilize Deep Freeze’s Idle Time Restart Feature to continually keep the computers fresh.

Page 20: Deep freezeadvancedoverview

Server Service

Acts in a relay capacity, allowing multiple consoles to control the same workstations, and for consoles to be able to control workstations reporting on different ports from the same interface.

Can be installed to control where network traffic will be sent. Allows administrators to prevent Deep Freeze traffic from going up slower WAN links between sites while still retaining control of workstations.

Installed on a secondary system that will remain active as a point of contact for the workstations at all time.

Should not be installed on a computer that will be running the Enterprise Console.

Runs on any Windows 2000/XP workstation or Windows 2000/2003 Server. Enterprise

Server Service

Situation

Steve is deploying Deep Freeze in his district, the district consists of five sites each with their own tech for the site.

Steve wants to be able to see the workstations at each site, but needs to provide control to each tech.

Solution

In Steve’s environment, Server Service should be installed at the district office, listening on five ports – one for each site.

Each port should have a unique password and each tech should be supplied the port number and password for their site’s port.

This will allow Steve, who has all the passwords, to connect to all the remote sites to view workstations, while limiting the site technicians to only the machines they require.

Deep Freeze Myths

Myth 1

Limited ability to save to the local hard drive

Why this myth exists:

Deep Freeze ThawSpace, out of the box, allows for saving to a particular virtual drive only

Deep Freeze’s ability to exempt certain partitions from being “frozen” may not be known

Limited knowledge how to “map” almost anything over to either the ThawSpace or a “thawed” partition

Deep Freeze Myths

Myth 2

I do not need Deep Freeze if I have an Imaging Solution

Why this myth exists:

Imaging Solutions such as Ghost & ZENWorks are very popular and traditional use is not only for deployment but also for maintenance

Fear that Deep Freeze will get in the way of the re-imaging process

Truth

Deep Freeze can be included as part of the master image

You can re-image over a “frozen” computer if booting off the C: Drive

Automatic & ensured availability

Incremental changes can still be made; Send a task to /bootthawed

“I have to congratulate your crew over there on such an intuitive and powerful support tool. DF Enterprise compliments our imaging software completely. In 25 years of data maintenance, I have now seen it all! Re-imaging a lab is now a dream and not a chore! Having the ability to remotely wipe a machine clean means that our students can be ensured of a standardized desktop every time they log on.”

- Camosun College, Victoria, BC

Deep Freeze Myths

Myth 3

Deep Freeze will interfere with my Management Solution

Why this myth exists:

Primarily a legacy issue; Deep Freeze has been around for 7 years, during which time Deep Freeze Standard was often deployed and evaluated. Deep Freeze Standard never had and still does not have the ability to integrate with Management Solutions.

Truth

Valdosta State University integrated Deep Freeze’s Command Line Utility, DFC.EXE into ZENWorks back in 2003.

Deep Freeze Myths

Myth 4

It is either Group Policies or Deep Freeze

Why this myth exists:

Notion that you have to go one way or the other

Fear that Deep Freeze will get in the way of sending down new policies

Misunderstanding of what else Deep Freeze does

Truth

Deep Freeze runs at Ring 0; GPOs run at Ring 3. Therefore, they will never interfere.

In fact, running Deep Freeze and GPOs together provides you with additional flexibility!
