Comment From Roderick G. Delos Santos

Finally, Arnis already received the fame and glory it deserves. Borne of battle and need for survival, earlier Filipino masters relentlessly honed and perfected throughout the centuries under 333 years of Spanish rule, training were being outlawed by Spaniards due to its formidable combat effectiveness but able to practice in secrecy by camouflaging it from authorities through the socio-religious play “moro-moro”, and persistently being handed down from one generation to another until today. Now, Arnis is forever etched as one of the most distinct progressive fighting system in existence today, that is, truly a Filipino origin. A fighting system that we, as Filipinos, can be proud of. After years of painstaking efforts of promoting and propagating not only in country and but also abroad by various Filipino Arnis masters, grandmasters and unsung practitioners alike, it is now thoroughly recognized as one of the lethal yet most practical fighting arts in the world, it is equally stunning and as effective as the European art of fencing. Moreover, it can even be blended with other forms of fighting arts such as Japanese Karate and Chinese Kung Fu as an additional weapon repertoire. Prior to Arnis declaration as a National martial art and Sport last December 19, 2009 under RA 9850 and its corresponding Senate Bill No. 1424 whereas the law mandates the incorporation of Arnis training as part of physical education curriculum nationwide, the Integrated College of Physical Education and Sports (formerly the National College of Physical Education), since 1969 through the tutelage of Grandmaster Remy Amador Presas, and later by his protege, Professor Armando C. Soteco, has done a major and tremendous task of educat-ing Physical Education teachers and later, Arnis practitioners via specialized program such as these. The curriculum has been timely changed and updated for the betterment of each participants, both for-eign and local nationals. Thus, providing us an adequate knowledge and background necessary to further en-hance our skills in entirely new and very captivating approach. The Arnis Professional Program is not likely to bring into life without the much effort made by Professor Soteco, who conceptualized and nonchalantly spearheaded the entire program. Batch 8, dubbed as “KALASAG”, notable lecturers are Dr. Alejandro Dagdag (sport psychology), Atty. Salvador Demaisip (Arnis brief history and management of sport competition), Professor Renato Meneses (organization and scheduling of sport competition), Professor Susan Mercado (nutrition, physiology and fit-ness) and lastly, Professor Leo Robert Viajar (sport science and traumatology). Likewise, Grandmaster Jonathan Abaya (single stick flow drills - Jendo sombrada), Grandmaster Inocencio Siok (double stick flow drills and esoteric aspect of Arnis), Master Julio Penales (creative anyo punyo), Grandmaster Garitony Nicholas (classical anyo), Grandmaster Pepito Robas (martial arts), Grandmaster Frank Subrino (martial arts), Master Ryan Gia-logo (sports Arnis) were among the top listed Grandmasters and Masters of their respective arts who officiated the actual Arnis practice. This program definitely is a must for all Arnis Practitioners like me, regardless of style, origin and creed.
