dedicated food port
TRANSCRIPT
Food cargo travels in many ways: in containers or RORO freight loads, in bulk or reefer ships. That’s
why multiple installations for the reception, handling and storage of perishables are found in
the port area. What’s more, the Port of Zeebrugge is located in the world’s most densely populated
consumer area so your importing and/or exporting partner is never far away.

We know that sensitive reefer cargo and frozen food transport and warehousing deserve a dedicated
approach. That is why we have brought together all the official authorities involved with perishable
cargo in our Border Control Post (BCP).
In this specialised centre, veterinary clearance, customs and maritime police all work under the same
roof to speed up the clearance of your cargo, which is completely segregated from other food cargo
to avoid contamination with products. In the Port of Zeebrugge, your container can be dispatched
to the market while the vessel is at berth; the food cargo can make its way to your customers or be
temporarily stored in our deepfreeze warehouses.
Intercontinental food cargo
Continental Europe & UK cargo
Food cargo originating from the EU travels freely within the unified European market. The Port of
Zeebrugge’s elaborate short-sea network of RORO and container feeder services allows shippers
to send and receive shipments to and from every major European destination and origin swiftly
and at high frequencies. Moreover, several companies within the Port of Zeebrugge offer specialised
warehousing, stock management and order picking in order to guarantee their clients reliable JIT
deliveries.

Distribution
The Port of Zeebrugge has grown into a bridgehead for distribution to the UK. At the same time,
the port has also become a distribution platform for the Spanish and Scandinavian markets. Replacing
expensive, individual land mileage with more cost-effective sea or rail mileage results in lower supply
chain costs.
Distribution
Day A: Arrival in Zeebrugge + certified clearance of your cargo.
Day B: Delivery to European customer or storage in certified warehouse.

60,000 m² of cold storage for 25,000 pallets of exotic or deciduous fruit and vegetables. The facility is also equipped to handle containers and is fully controlled by WMS with real-time barcode scanning.
Ø The Port of Zeebrugge has been Europe’s main entry point for Zespri kiwifruit from New Zealand since 1984. Annual volumes amount to 120,000 tonnes.
Ø ICO offers specialised facilities for the storage and packaging of potatoes and sugar.
Ø Imports from the U.S.A, South America, New Zealand, and the Mediterranean. Frequent exports to Saint Petersburg in Russia.
Ø A deep-sea container terminal, operated by CPS Zeebrugge Terminal offer a total of 780 reefer plugs.
Ø The Border Control Post, which houses veterinary inspection and customs offices, is located within a 2 km radius of the container terminals and cold storage warehouses. This results in considerable time- saving and lower transport costs to get your cargo cleared and released.
Ø All major container shipping lines are active on the Asia-Europe route, with connections to and from the markets in the Middle East and Far East. Fifty percent of all deep-sea containers originate in China.
Ø A growing number of 45’ reefer containers are being used on the frequent RORO services to destinations in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Portugal. Regular block trains link the Zeebrugge RORO and container terminals to inland platforms.

Ø Seaport Shipping & Trading, located in the port of Bruges, offers 34,000 m² of covered warehousing for grains, seeds and animal fodder. The bulk cargo is conveyed to and from the facility by barges, seagoing ships and trucks.
Ø Group Depré, in the port of Bruges, specialises in the handling and storage of grains, rice and animal fodder. They offer 35,500 m² of covered warehousing with a capacity of 65.000 tons. And services such as: handling & storage, rice cleaning, fumigation, shipping agency and logistics services.
Ø Verhelst-Agri specialises in the handling and storage of agricultural products with additional services such as: drying, stuffing & stripping, grinding/mixing/bagging,…
Ø NV Voeders Huys is active in the production of animal fodder. The company specializes in cattle, pig and poultry feeds. The feeds are produced on the industrial site at the port in Bruges. The production site consists of two production units to avoid contamination. One for pig- and cattle feeds and the other for poultry feed.
Ø A vast range of liquid food products is transported in tank containers. RORO shipping lines like P&O Ferries, Cobelfret, SOL and DFDS offer frequent daily services between the Continent and the UK. The port also offers tank cleaning facilities.
Ø Pepsi Co. has invested more than €50 million in its Tropicana bottling facility in the inner port. It handles and bottles some 290 million litres of fresh fruit juices, imported mainly from Brazil, every year.
Ø Tameco, a division of United Molasses, operates a tank terminal in the inner port for the reception, storage and distribution of molasses and other liquid food products.
Ø The “Vlaamse Visveiling” covers the fish auctions based in the Port of Zeebrugge. Every year some 20,000 tonnes of fresh fish are sold to wholesalers all over Europe via internet-based auction technology.
Ø The “European Food Center” is a logistics platform that includes both fish auctions and some 130 trading, supplying and processing companies.

Packing / bottling / blending Ø Every year, from October to May, reefer ships
convey some 120,000 tonnes of Zespri kiwifruit from New Zealand to the packing station in the Zeebrugge inner port. The fruit is subsequently distributed to all major consumption centres in Northwest Europe.
Ø The Tropicana bottling facility of Pepsi Co. receives and bottles some 290 million litres of fruit juices every year. The juice is transported by tankers, mostly from Brazil. More than 80% of the palletised finished product is exported to the UK, using the Port of Zeebrugge’s wide array of short sea shipping facilities.
Ø Seabridge Logistics is part of the Efico group, a globally active coffee and cacao trader. Zeebrugge’s clean environment largely contributed to their decision to set up their European centre for the automated refinement, processing, storage and distribution of green coffee in the Port of Zeebrugge. The centre currently has a surface area of 20,000 m² and a storage capacity for 450,000 coffee bags.
Europe - UK: door-to-door transport
Ø The successful Zeebrugge - UK door-to-door concept is based on the geographical spread of UK ports, which have daily links with the Port of Zeebrugge. Another determining factor is the comparatively low logistics cost in Zeebrugge compared to the UK. As a result, orders picked in a Zeebrugge warehouse on Day A before 2 p.m. are guaranteed a JIT delivery with the UK client on Day B. Several companies offer FCL, LCL, FTL or LTL solutions.
Ø ECS 2XL offers warehouse solutions and intermodal 45’ door-to-door logistics between and within the UK, Ireland and Continental Europe. The company has 120,000 m² of rail-connected warehouse surface for the storage of buffer stocks between European producers and consignees in the UK. The direct customer service approach, which avoids regional distribution centres in the UK, can lead to a 25% reduction in supply chain costs.
Freight forwarding & transport

Ø Nearly 70 road transport companies have offices in the Port of Zeebrugge. A number of them specialise in temperature-controlled transportation and have invested in cold storage warehouses.
Ø The Transport Zone Zeebrugge (TZZ) is a strategically located area specially developed for the road transport sector. Shippers can choose from many different companies; this results in high service levels and very competitive prices.
Ø The cargo generating effect of the port’s freight forwarding community has been very instrumental in establishing a vast network of short-sea and deep-sea links. Food transportation, and reefer cargo in particular, requires a great deal of effort and care. Specialised knowledge and multilingual skills are crucial elements for sustainable and successful relationship between shippers and freight forwarders.

Multimodal platform
Ø Combining cargo flows to major inland multimodal platforms reduces costs and opens a world of opportunities to reach faraway clients, for whom individual road transport is just not an option. Frequent block trains to and from intermodal “hot spots” connect your cargo to the entire European market.
Ø The port of Zeebrugge plays an active role in creating hinterland products by bringing together cargo from different operators to create sufficient volumes. Connection with the hinterland is established by rail, by estuary barge and by road.
Ø The ‘Fresh Corridor’ is an example of how collaboration between competitors can benefit all the individual partners. In this project, deepfreeze potato products and vegetables from nearby producers use joint logistic products to reach markets at a reduced cost.
Investment opportunities
Ø The Port of Zeebrugge has established a Maritime Logistic Zone (MLZ) as a centre for value-added logistics inside the port area. Its close proximity to the actual port operations guarantees a fast and competitive flow of all exports and imports from the docks to this logistics zone.
Ø The wide variety of frequent short-sea, deep-sea and hinterland links ensures your connection to the markets of Continental Europe and the UK. Just over 250 million consumers live within a 700 km reach.
Ø The Maritime Logistic Zone offers 80 hectares of land that can be leased for 25 years with extension options both in time and space. A highly-skilled and multilingual labour force, combined with EDC know-how and dedicated assistance from the port authority, are valuable assets for your logistics project.
The MLZ offers following opportunities:
your own logistics activity, close to European markets, inside a
port area and connections to all continents.
