DREAM Campus Released: [4 February, 2017]

Goal: To create a beautiful four-building campus that will foster health, economic, social and cultural well-being for low-income African American mothers and the larger community on the South side of Chicago. The center will build upon the cultural resources that the mothers employ to be resilient such as spiritual practices, strong networks, etc.

Fannie Lou Hamer –“Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired” Wellness Center

• Goal: This building will house health promotion activities that include traditional medical practices, precision medicine, alternative medical practices, mindfulness, yoga, meditation, mind-body practices, etc.

• Classroom Activities/Function: Where the women learn how stress in their environments get “under their skin” to affect their health. One of the stress and health courses will be Sociogenomics forTM You. This classroom will run video of courses that tell the women how their bodies operate and factors that create sickness in their bodies (endocrinology, immune system, molecular genetics, etc.). They will be able to see beautiful pictures that depict the human body and actual pictures that show chromosomes, cancer, the heart, blood vessels, etc. Other activities include dancing, book clubs, cooking, interior decorating, improving the amount and quality of sleep, sharing meals, and developing ways to help others.

• Beauty/Built Environment: Homelike environment with plants, trees, flowers, colorful furniture and rugs, comfortable chairs and desk that do not look like traditional chairs and desk. Maybe long wooden tables that can sit 4 people on one side. Also, individual cubby holes that are like your own personal space. Beauty pictures with Black art.

• Child and Adult Care with cameras that people can get the link to and monitor children and adult loved ones - also house a 24-hour safe and secure child-care center for working (grand)mothers/fathers with regular and nontraditional work hours. It will also have space for (grand)mothers/fathers who may need a few hours break from their children to drop them off while they engage in self-care or run errands. Home environment with beds and pretty comforters, small book shelfs with kids books, basic scientific experiment such as seeing something under a microscope, coding and making robots go, etc.

• Large room for dances, yoga, mindfulness classes, etc. Not sure of the best floor for this. I am thinking light hardwood floors. Murals on the walls maybe of nature (water, sunsets, palm trees, mountains, etc.)

• Things that create awe (shown to facilitate healing): butterfly garden (see the one that is in Durham, NC and Chicago), nice scents like flowers, lavender, music, . Other things…

• Intergenerational space for mothers to talk about the issues in their neighborhoods and for general support – several large tables for sharing meals (round tables for 12-16 people). Sofas and chairs for people to talk, perhaps like what you see in hotel lobbies that are nice.

The Maya Angelou “And Still I Rise a Beautiful Phenomenal Woman” Arts Center

• Goal: The Angelou art center will house all genres of artistic expressions and spaces that foster their creation.

• Beauty/built environment: Large and small paintings that capture the lived experiences of Black women and girls, photographs that captures the beauty of Black butterflies and Black women, songs that sing of their lovers and hopes, poems that angrily condemn American injustice, documentaries that capture the anguish of parents burying their children due to gun violence and books about the path forward into a brilliant future. Performing arts center that seats 200-400 and a room where receptions can be held for movie premiers, wedding events, community celebrations. Recording studio, TV station, social media room, a large room to paint and draws with large tables and supplies, lots of book shelves, etc. Walls have images of famous and not famous people who contributed to the arts. Some of the walls will have inspirational quotes in pretty writing.

Gallery: another color other than blue but this type of layout is good.

The Harriet Tubman “I Got a Right to Death or Liberty” building

Goal: This building will house an intensive search, rescue and recovery mission around individuals dreams, talents, prisoner reentry, contributions to society, great scientific discoveries in health, computer science, etc.

Activities: The activities in the Harriet Tubman building will search for the child inside young boys and girls on the streets selling drugs, failing in school, etc. and rescue and recover their dreams, talents and genius. Specific activities will include group gatherings where they (and their parents) can write their dreams in a book or blog and work with others to identify large and small steps to move toward those dreams (e.g., pay off debt, enroll in GED, stop selling drugs and enroll in college, publish a poem, write the family history for their children, etc.). The Tubman building will also house job training, job creation and entrepreneurial activities (e.g., selling crafts, interior design, child care, construction, culinary, health care, engineering and technology, etc.). We would invite individuals from all walks of life to give workshops and mentor individuals.

Built Environment: Kitchen that can accommodate large events like weddings, performing art events, training students to cook and serve the food. Stainless steel but beautiful backsplashes (blue small squares or shades of tan and white) and gas stove hoods. Laundromat for those who are homeless or cant afford to wash clothes. Will arrange it so they can do volunteer work to get tokens. It will have a carpenter shop (see what Kennedy King offers, don’t want to duplicate too much). Classrooms, technology/super computing, other engineering areas.

Emergency Shelter, elder care

Space for children to do homework, space for parents to work on computers to look for work. Bright colors and plants important with inspirational sayings.

Elder care to look like a small studio with a full bed, two chairs and a small desk with a book shelf on top.

Shirley Chisholm “Our County Needs Women’s Idealism and Determination” Policy Institute

Goal: Have trainings on how to craft public policy proposals and bills and find legislators to sponsor them. Many generations of women and girls will come together to read about Black women’s idealism and determination to change America during the Chisholm Black Feminist Book Club.

Activities: The activities in the Chisholm building will focus on using public policy as a tool to reshape the harsh realities and social injustice into a culture of health and wealth in Englewood. The women and girls will use technologies, employment and other methods to put an end to violence.

Built Environment; room for supercomputer to analyze big data using high performance computers, room that has five TV monitors to watch various news channels, three training/meeting rooms that seat 30 people that can be opened up to a large room, lots of bookshelves to hold books about topics working on (poverty, race, etc.).

Memorial Wall with names to help with grieving – indoor

Building Dimensions

• Single story structures with lots of windows that let in natural light. Perhaps skylights too.

• Four buildings maybe connected to a path or tunnel. Maybe water feature and garden in the middle.

• Perhaps the path that connects them could be a running or walking track with beautiful plants and flowers along the way. Could use something else that will make it beautiful or interesting even in the winter.
