PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Our August workshop was led by Dianne Case. Dianne taught us an oil painting technique called rouging over acrylics. We all enjoyed this workshop and so appreciate you Dianne.

It’s been a busy year and it’s hard to believe September is here already. Your Board of

Officers have been very busy this year with implementing some positive changes. One being for all members who are generous with their time and talents to continue to help support this chapter with our new Reward Points System. Your chapter board members have finalized the Points Reward System for members who volunteer throughout the year to have some appreciation given back to them, in the way of help with SDP dues. An e-blast will be forthcoming, and at the October meeting the Points total will be ready for each of you. Our fiscal year for Points starts in November and ends in October. Penny Brown is in charge of the Points System and you can contact her if you are not at the October meeting to get your total. There are still a few details to be ironed out about how to handle those of you who have paid your dues early, as well.

If you are interested in running for a position on the board, please make that known, we will have committee members calling each of you to ask if you have an interest in serving on the board. All positions may remain the same for a second year with the exception of Recording Secretary. Our dear Judy will have served us in this position for the two year term allowed. The board positions are a two year maximum with the exception of Treasurer. However, anyone can run for a position in the upcoming elections.

AUGUST CHAPTER MEETING & WORKSHOP IN PIX

The August Chapter meeting was held back on the usual 1st Saturday of the month. Dianne Case brought us a lovely oil over acrylic project, entitled, “Breath of Spring,” also making use of the technique of rouging. Thanks, all. Thanks Dianne! Below are a few photos from our Saturday gathering.

WORKSHOP TEACHER GUIDELINES

One of the key aims of our monthly workshops is to develop the skills of each participant, in order to promote greater enjoyment of painting. Toward that end, teachers are urged to exercise the following guidelines.

1. Explain the use of your medium, and how is best applied to the surface for your project.

2. Describe which brushes work best for the application of medium.

3. Teaching of any special technique (e.g. line work, floating, dry brushing, etc.) should be demonstrated, to show how the technique is best used for your project. Keep a practice board at your side to show, on-screen, how the skill is done.

4. Since we have new painters and we are trying to encourage both chapter membership and interest in painting, be especially mindful of the newest painters and their needs.

5. Circulate throughout the class, check on the progress of each person, and provide individual assistance to the extent possible.

6. Ask if anyone needs assistance, periodically, during your class.

7. Be mindful of your students’ painting pace; ask if everyone is ready to move on. Give an extra few moments if necessary.

8. Ask the class if they need a break.

9. Ask what time would be good for a lunch break.

STUDENT GUIDELINES

1. Be prepared! Bring your supplies. Make sure you have any special supplies requested by the teacher, and bring a PREPARED SURFACE if not provided. Trying to basecoat a surface right before the class is to begin does not give the paint time to cure properly and may make your painting experience more difficult.

2. Don’t expect your neighbor to be your

instructor. Ask the teacher for help. This reduces the chatter so everyone can hear the teacher. You might be missing out on important instructions.

3. Use every class as a learning experience regardless of the level of difficulty. Every new technique learned needs practice.

4. Let the teacher know if you are unfamiliar with a technique or medium featured. This will let the teacher know you may need a little extra help during class.

5. Bring an extra surface or practice board you can practice on before painting on your project if you know ahead of time that you are challenging your skill level.

6. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you are learning new techniques during the class. It is difficult to master a new technique the first time. And – PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!SAVE
