Planning for Valentine’s Day can be a hectic and expensive venture, especially when trying to fight the crowds at your favorite restaurant. There’s just nothing romantic about a 30-minute to an hour wait to eat. For years, this is why I have been urging couples to forget the busy restaurant and opt for something a little more quiet, more romantic, and far more intimate, like a seafood dinner for two in the comfort of your own home. It’s no secret that Groomer’s puts together specials for every holiday occasion, and when it comes to our Valentine’s Day package, we have kept it more or less the same for years. Why? Because it’s just too perfect to change! Beautiful, center “captain’s cut” salmon fillets paired with sweet and succulent East Coast Maine Lobster tails, and fresh, never frozen Texas Gulf Shrimp. Nurturing Your Mind, Body and SpiritBy Michelle Houriet, Executive DirectorIndependence Hill Retirement Resort Community(210) 209-8956

A healthy mind, body and spirit is critical to getting the most out of life at any age, so fi nding ways to stimulate, challenge and fully engage is key. For seniors, sometimes staying engaged

can become more diffi cult as the aging process progresses; especially if they live alone. Seniors need to stay active both physically and mentally. Putting your mind, body and spirit to work in unison is the best way to live your best life at every age. At Independence Hill Retirement Community we keep this goal in mind as we plan out each month’s calendar of events.

Mind: Nourishing the mind is something we all want to work hard on. Our brains need to be stimulated to retain mental alertness. Finding an activity that will challenge your brain is much more fun when you are doing it amongst friends who share your same interests. The Independence Hill Activities Department provides a ton of options for achieving this purpose daily. Whether it is groups gathering for cards, dominoes, chess games, or learning opportunities such as lectures, museum visits or cultural/historical excursions, art classes, or monthly wellness talks, residents are encouraged to participate as much as possible. It is never too late to learn something new.

Lifelong learning will keep your mind sharp and fully engaged. We do not believe the old saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks!” It is simply not true. Learning is happening every day at Independence Hill amongst an amazing group with ages ranging from 55 to 103! In fact, one of our most popular offerings is Tech Time with Tommie, where residents can learn all aspects of using technology. It might be a phone app that helps distant family/friends communicate with one another or new technology that helps monitor your health, learning how to navigate the internet and all the power and learning opportunities that it can create opens so many doors. The opportunities

are endless.Body: We were born to move so why stop just because you have

a few more years under your belt? There are a variety of group classes offered at Independence Hill including water aerobics, yoga, Texercise, Sittercise, fi tness, Zumba Gold, and dance classes six days per week. Our residents not only receive the physical benefi ts of regular exercise, but also the socialization with friends working toward the same goal. We must remember that living a sedentary lifestyle can increase the effects of many chronic illnesses, and can also cause the onset of many other illnesses.

Spirit: It is so important to make time to explore your spirituality. It is truly just as important as your mental and physical wellbeing. Spirituality can mean religious beliefs to some, and for others it might mean simply having faith in something greater than themselves, giving

This year marks a huge milestone in remembering Ian Fincke and the impact Ian’s Foundation has had on advancing safety awareness to youth through education, scholarships,

and helmet distributions in our city! Some may recall Ian’s tragic accident resulting

from riding a skateboard without a helmet that inspired his family on a mission to inform our community about Traumatic Brain Injuries and provide safety talks and protective headgear to youth. This also resulted in the Fincke’s organizing Ian’s Annual Cup Soccer Clinic and the well-known Ian’s Cup soccer match between Johnson and Reagan High Schools (JHS & RHS). Ian’s love for soccer and the family’s desire to create a legacy of giving back to players through scholarship’s awarded are the continued motivation for these two annual events.

This year, the Soccer Clinic will be held on Sunday, February 17, from 2-4 p.m., at the Mays Family YMCA. All pre-registered participants will receive the signature t-shirt including training and drills conducted by Johnson and Reagan soccer players, high school and club coaches, and a tournament style second half of the clinic conducted by Neil Hull and PASS. This date also marks Ian’s 27th birthday, so this is surely a day you do not want to miss! The deadline to register is Sunday, February 10 at IansCup.com. (Cost is $25 pre-registered, $30 for walk-in’s).

The famous Ian’s Cup will be on Friday, February 22 beginning at 5 p.m. at Blossom Athletic Center. Please come out and support

the JHS and RHS soccer teams in this special memorial tribute to Ian. Scholarships will be awarded again post-game

to four seniors in addition to these players each choosing one individual local organization to

receive a matching donation in their honor. Remember to pre-order your Ian’s Cup t-shirt and other merchandise at IansCup.

Volunteering is another wonderful way to fi nd a great sense of purpose while giving back to your community. It can also be very rewarding and fulfi lling. Independence Hill offers many volunteer opportunities both on our campus and within our neighboring community like our GrandPals Reading Program affi liated with Las Lomas Elementary. Our residents pay visits to students and work with them on their reading skills. Both the children and the residents are reaping the benefi ts equally from spending this amazing time together. Fulfi lling a sense of purpose can restore your spirit and energize you. Everyone needs a reason for being engaged in meaningful ways, and

seniors are no exception. There is never a shortage of social activities or ways to explore

new interests at Independence Hill. Just ask the members of our Wine Club who enjoy their time together learning about and experiencing wine. Don’t forget to participate in mind, body and spirit activities and know that it is never too late to do things that will nourish these very important parts of your life. If you would like to see how many options are available to our residents, check out our monthly newsletter/calendar on our website. Subscribe and it will be mailed to you each month.
