Hip-Hop: This will most likely be my genre for the music magazine as it’s the type of music I usually listen to for most of the time. I also really like the layouts of Hip-Hop magazines and the style they use. Example Magazines: Vibe, Hip-Hop Connection, XXL and The Source.Example Artists: Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Nicky Minaj, Kanye West and Eminem. Features: These magazines usually contain bold text with dark and contrasting colours. The front pages also look complex containing a lot of information in such a small space.

Pop: This is another type of mainstream music just like Hip-Hop. I think that this could be a possibility for my magazine. I like this because of how the layouts for the magazines are, not too simple but not too complex at the same time. Example used here is Billboard which uses a simple but effective layout still containing a lot of information. Example Magazines: Blender, Pop, iPop and Billboard.Example Artists: Taylor Swift, Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry and Jessy-J.Features: Colour full design, mainstream look, female artists, simple design.

Decide on style of music magazine based on research carried out

Rock: I don’t really like this type of music however I like how the magazines are layed out, also with a complex and classic look. Example Magazines: Classic Rock, Team Rock, Rock Sound and Q.Example Artists: David Bowie, Nirvana, Pink Floyd and AC/DC.Features: Usually quite dark colours, bold text, lots of information condensed and a band.

Jazz: I don’t really listen to this genre of music however I do like the style their magazines take. I think that a lot of thought is taken into the magazines as it looks well layed out and rather professional. Example Magazines: Jazz Times, Jazz Review, Down Beat and Jazzwize.Example Artists: Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans and Dave Burbeck. Features: Usually dark and light colours used together, black and white is also an option here, professional layout and simple design.

Country: I listen to this type of music however not as frequently as Hip-Hop. I like the idea of the overall genre as it being a classic colour combination, black and white. The magazines usually also focus more on the image and elements around it like the example shown. It’s not too complex however still contains a lot of information.Example Magazines: Maverick Magazine and NASH Country. Example Artists: Luke Bryan, Dolly Parton and Blake Shelton. Features: Usually dark and light colours use together, a simple look is used to draw the reader to the image.

Indie/Alternative: This is also a genre of music i like however i wanted a more complex magazine which is why I went for Hip-Hop. I do love the simplicity this magazine uses though. It contains only the main features focusing the magazine on the image. Example Magazines: Loud and Quiet, INDIE Mag, DIY and Crack.Example Artists: The Smiths, The xx, Modest Mouse and The Shines. Features: Usually uses a very simple look, with minimal colours and text including a bold masthead.

Chosen Style: Hip-HopI chose this genre of music to create my music magazine based on because this is the genre that I listen to most and know the most about which means I can implement my ideas and the culture of Hip-Hop into my magazine which will make it look better. Some of the best known Hip-Hop artists are Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Akon, T-Pain and Kanye West. Hip-Hop music are classed as mainstream because of how many people listen to the genre. It started in the 1970’s and some of the popular artists which made the genre famous are: Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dog and Dr Dre. The genre has now grown and created sub categories for the type of music created such as alternative rap. This means that it appeals to a wider audience rather than just the classic 18-34 male and female mainstream rap audience.
