When George Larscheid turned 100 on New Year’s Day, he joined a very prestigious group. All Saints Neighborhood now has five residents who are 100 or older! These special people sat down with us and told us a little about their lives and their secrets to longevity.

George Larscheid (left back row) was born in 1920 in Minneapolis but lived in Milwaukee until World War II, during which he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and at Normandy. After the war, he graduated from UW-Madison and became a plant manager in Milwaukee. His memories include the 1940-41 UW-Madison men’s basketball team winning the NCAA Championship, and meeting Joe DiMaggio and Bart Starr. His secrets to longevity are good genes; staying intellectually, physically and spiritually active, and not smoking.

Over 500 Years of Spirited Living! Thank You for Sharing the Sounds of Christmas

Frank J. DiPiazza (right back row) was born in 1918 in Madison and will be 102 in April. He graduated from UW-Madison and worked as an industrial engineer. He and his wife, Deloris, were married 43 years and had three children. His memories include serving in the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division, which was awarded two battle stars and the Presidential Citation. His secrets to longevity are staying active by walking, participating in sports and staying spiritually active.

Mary Fran Cieciorka (middle front row) was born in 1919 in Muscoda and lived there most of her life. She worked for the telephone company in a variety of positions, including as an operator saying “Number, please”. She and her husband, Ignacious, had four children. Her memories include winning a dance contest, and her favorite dance was the Jitterbug. Her secrets to longevity are eating good, healthy food like vegetables and salad and an occasional Brandy Old-Fashioned.

Adrian Stransky (right front row) was born in 1919 in Hancock and grew up in Pittsville. He went to college for shorthand and had his own court reporting business for 40 years. He and his wife, Dorothy, were married for 54 years and have eight children. His memories include serving as a Master Sergeant in the 32nd Red Arrow Division. His secrets to longevity are exercising every day, listening to good music, and collecting stamps and coins for 80 years!

Rosemary Grout (left front row) was born in 1919 in Fort Scott, KS. She lived in Denver, until 1971 when her husband, Joseph, took a job in Madison. They were married for 72 years and had 10 children. Her memories include learning to tap dance as a child and performing with The Tap Dance Kids at the opening of the Monona Terrace and being a founding member of the Madison Diocesan Choir. Her secrets to longevity are staying busy, enjoying good music and staying fit.

During the holiday season, Neighborhood residents made special gifts to two Madison organizations. Assisted living residents had been working on beautiful baby quilts the past few months, and they donated them to the Women’s Care Center, which provides free counseling and support to women facing unplanned pregnancies. The Main Street tenants started a collection for The Beacon homeless day resource center. Very quickly, staff members and residents from other living options joined in, donating items from the wish list as well as monetary gifts. Thank you to everyone for your generosity!

All Saints was honored to welcome special visitors in December. Two nuns from the ancient Cistercian order, cloistered together at Valley of Our Lady Monastery in Sauk County, spoke to residents about the history of their convent and their plans to build a new monastery. Wisconsin shares a sister state relationship with the Heilongjang Province in northeast China, and a delegation of high-ranking officials visited All Saints and a number of other locations in Madison to learn about options for economic development, mental health and long term care for seniors.

Special Visitors

Early in January, members from St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church held their annual Happy Hour on campus to visit with residents who are also parishioners. What a blessing it is for them to stay connected to their local congregations and parishes.

Staying Connected to Parishes

A special thank you to each individual and community group that shared their time, talents and friendship with our residents this past Christmas season. Whether it was caroling, playing games, or simply visiting, our seniors enjoyed every moment. We wish we could include pictures of all the groups, but here’s a sampling. Above L to R: Seminarians from the Diocese of Madison,The Little Flower Group from Ashton and St Peter Parish, 8th grade students from St. Maria Goretti Catholic School, Boys Scout Troop 420 and St. Christopher Education Cooperative.
