BENEFITS OF LEARNING ENGLISH

wtorek, 14 czerwca 2016

Why is English so popular? In general, omnipresence of English language began when the British Empire started to spread around the world. On every continent there was a British colony. In the course of time, these areas started to develop to finally become global powers. In fact, even though English comes in third on the “Top languages by population” list, the number of learners stands at Chinese and USA inhabitants combined and amounts in approximately 1,5 billion people. Below I have listed a few irrefutable reasons to prove why learning English is worthwhile.

WORK Of course, this is why we mostly learn English for. Being fluent in a second language makes you more desirable for employers. More and more companies establish international contacts. Nowadays, for many different job providers English is a necessary requirement. It doesn’t matter which profession you are willing to practice, an English-speaking person is a valuable employee.

WIDER ACCESS TO KNOWLEDGE AND POP CULTURE

Did you know that 55% of the world’s webpages are written in English? It means that if you have a good command of English, you are able to diversify your hobbies, acquire well developed and detailed information on anything you need from many different sources. For example, watching foreign-language movies without rapidly changing subtitles will make the

Page 7: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

show more enjoyable. Reading books in English is an educative activity – you can benefit from both learning vocabulary and entertaining yourself at the same time.

COMMUNICATION English allows you to become a “global citizen”. It means you can interact with other people in the whole world – at work or less formally. It is very useful to overcome language barriers when travelling. Exchanging thoughts with anybody you meet is a great opportunity. English also allows us to form long-lasting friendships or relationships.

To sum up, English gives simplicity in business, education, technology, and social life. It cannot be separated from human live anymore, so we are forced to stick to its rules willy-nilly.

JOB SATISFACTION czwartek, 24 marca 2016

JOB SATISFACION – KNOW ITS MEANING (article written by Aleksandra Fiuk, 2Ap)

As it's well known, there are many factors that make a job good or bad. These are mostly personal issues, but certainly some of them are equally important for every, both current and future, employee.

First and most obvious motivator is money. We work for money and the higher the salary, the more comfortable our daily life. Most people mean „I need money” when they say „I need a job”. It simply allows you to live and meet basic needs. If a job requires long working hours and offers low salary, motivation plummets.

Recognition is the second most essential factor when it comes to job satisfaction. More or less consciously, we need our work to be valued and appreciated. Lack of praise from the boss and co-workers makes us see no point in what we do at work and a sense of uselessness is felt. Even high salary will not compensate for no positive feedback or warm words. „Promotion” is a word that fuels our pace of development. We become more experienced workers; our self-esteem intensifies.

Workplace is a venue for people. Friendly colleagues and understanding boss are crucial when we need to feel comfortable. Employees work as one unit so good atmosphere makes

Page 10: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

people work effectively and efficiently. „People” means nothing but family. What does family have to do with work? If family is our absolute priority, we would be unhappy working in a company which forces us to stay at work overtime.

According to scientific research, bad job influences us more negatively than being unemployed. Having a successful career and moving up a career ladder is worth an effort, because it affects our whole life. Follow your passions, raise qualifications and take all matters into your own hands.

BREAKING NEWS

niedziela, 24 stycznia 2016

Inspired by an incident happening next to their school, 3OT students role-played as live news reporters.

This is what they said to the microphone:

It's Thursday, 21 January. During our Polish lesson, we witnessed the fire of an abandoned kebab kiosk at the corner of Al. Solidarności and ul. Dobrzańskiego. For our own safety, we closed the windows and left the classroom. We are now looking through the windows of a top-floor English classroom and watching the scene. Two fire trucks, an ambulance and police car arrived within a few seconds. The fire has now been put out. Who or what started the fire and whether any homeless people were inside, has yet to be determined.

And this is Weronika, caught on camera when reporting live for Ogrodowa News:

You must have seen Back to the Future and the hit sequel Back to the Future II. You haven’t? Seriously? Then you must see it. It’s lots of fun.

It’s is a 1989 iconic American adventure comic science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis. Check the details on IMDb.com

What’s the big news?

Look at when and what time McFly and Dr Emmett “Doc” Brown chose to travel forward in time from 1985.

"We're descending toward Hill Valley, California, at 4:29 pm, on Wednesday, October 21st, 2015."

Did they get it right about our present and their future?

If it’s 4:29 pm or later, look out the window, just in case. Maybe something has just changed and you will see a guy on a hoverboard…

W skrócie: Musieliście widzieć Powrót do przyszłości I i II. Nie? to musicie zobaczyć. Szczegóły na: IMDb.com

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

wtorek, 20 października 2015

This photograph was taken by Steve McCurry in the refugee camp in Pakistan in December 1984 and it appeared on the cover page in the June 1985 issue of National Geographic.

“The Afghan Girl” is one of the most famous portraits the world has ever seen. It’s also the most recognized photograph in the history of National Geographic, mostly because of the sea green eyes in which one can read a lot.

No-one knew the girl’s name until 17 years later… when Steve McCurry and a team from National Geographic travelled to Pakistan and then to Afghanistan to search for the girl. They found her living in the mountains in Tora Bora with her husband and 3 children.

Today we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure.

A picture is worth a thousand words is true, but it never tells the whole story…

HOLIDAYS, HERE I COME!

niedziela, 21 czerwca 2015

Summer - time for recreation, travel and healthy bodies.

When holidays come, young people begin to exercise to get in better shape. They do different things, for example:

• Run in the morning

• Go to the gym

• Exercise at home

• Sign up for dance class

• Go to the pool

Page 16: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

• Learn martial arts

or…..?

• Go on a diet and drink a lot of water.

Healthy lifestyle is getting more and more popular in Poland. For many of us it’s very important to lose weight, look good and feel well in our body. Be careful, though. You have to remember about earlier preparation to avoid sore muscles. When we start an adventure with workouts, we should stretch and warm up our body first. Ask your personal trainer for help. And choose the right place for your training!!!

Follow these rules and soon enough you’ll be reaping the benefits of your effort. “A sound mind in a sound body” is a guarantee of pleasant summer time.

SOMETHING FOR VOLLEYBALL FANS

World League – let’s get started…

The World League is an international tournament in men’s volleyball. It is organized yearly (since 1990) by FIVB and members of World League Council for chosen by them representations of countries. Tournament is held from May to July and they are a beginning of representation season. Invitations to this tournament can be given only to countries, whose volleyball federations and men’s teams meet the requirements. They can win a lot of money in this tournament (in 2006 the rewards amounted to 20 million dollars).

Short history

The history of World League begins in 1986 in Prague, when during the 2nd World Conference of FIVB Ruben Acosta became the president of this organization. At once he formulated – with group of his collaborators – a perennial conception, whose goal was a prevalence of men’s volleyball all over the world. Then he started to put it into practice. So that’s why, by the end of the eighties, there was prepared a project of the logistics of brand new tournament, which was to be held yearly, in which only the best teams in the world would take part. The name World League was given to the tournament, and its first edition was held in 1990.

Rules In the present edition of World League the rules are different from previous editions. Every team plays 4 matches with every other team from their group (2 matches at home, 2 matches away). Only 2 teams from each group will qualify to the Final Six (the host of the Final Six is qualified automatically). The number of matches won by a team determine the final promotion.

Poland in the World League…

We haven’t had many achievements in the World League

Our first medal was a bronze medal in 2011 (Final Six played in Gdansk/Sopot)

The second (and the last) medal was a gold medal in 2012 (Final Six played in Sofia)

THE MOST BIZZARE LAWS IN THE WORLD

poniedziałek, 11 maja 2015

1. In New Jersey it's illegal to wear a bulletproof vest while committing a crime such as murder, kidnapping or robbery. If you plan to do so, don't wear it, because, after all, you wouldn't want to break the law, would you?

2. In Finland there are traffic fines as a percentage of driver's income. There are multiple cases of wealthy people that have been charged tens, hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars in traffic fees.

3. It's illegal to die in the House of Parliament in London because it's a royal palace and anybody who died there is entitled to a state funeral (held to honor people of

national significance). The law goes as far as to say that if you even look a little bit sickly they will carry you out of the building.

4. Singapore has a ban on publicly chewing gum. It's only available in pharmacies and only for personal consumption at home or for therapeutic purposes - whatever it means... The ban on gum occurred after authorities noticed that roads, subway stations and generally every place was contaminated with gum.

5. You can legally marry a dead person in France as long as you were engaged to them before they died.

Page 21: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

We Francji możesz legalnie poślubić zmarłą osobę pod warunkiem, że przed jej śmiercią byliście zaręczeni.

6. Tibetan monks need permission to reincarnate! They must get government approval, otherwise it's "illegal or invalid".

2015 BLOOM WATCH AND MORE

poniedziałek, 13 kwietnia 2015

Japan is not the only one famous for its cherry blossoms.

Where else can you admire a beautiful display of floral fireworks?

Answer: in Washington DC’s Tidal Basin

Page 22: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

When?

Answer: The so called Peak Bloom Date (70 percent of the blossoms of the Yoshino cherry trees that surround the Tidal Basin are open on that day) is difficult to predict and varies from year to year. Should you decide to go to take a photo, remember you don’t have to be there on that day. The trees look beautiful at least 2-3 days before the peak bloom date and for at least 2-3 days after. Avoid weekends because of really heavy crowds. Weekdays, early in the morning, are much better.

This year prediction: April 11 – 14, 2015. You can still make it there.

How many trees?

Answer: Impressive 1,700 Cherry Blossom trees.

Do they produce any fruit?

Answer: Though a cherry tree, it bears no cherries. It’s value is purely ornamental.

Where are the cherry blossom trees located?

Answer: around the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park, in East Potomac Park (Hains Point), and on the Washington Monument grounds.

BE LIKE A FOODIE, EAT LIKE A FOODIE

wtorek, 21 października 2014

Nobody travels to London for its food alone.

Most of the times.

I’m sure you don’t.

But once you’ve seen all of must-sees

(for the top 10 attractions and sights go to: http://www.touropia.com/tourist-attractions-

n-london/) when nobody can say: “I can't believe you didn't see…” ,

you are ready for some food.

Here comes a FOODIE-TRAVELER.

What does it mean?

Generally speaking, you eat like a local.

What does that mean?

First of all, forget some posh, three Michelin stars restaurant. Yes, they offer fine dining, a top-notch service that’s hard to beat. But unless you’ve hit the jackpot, you can’t afford this little piece of art.

Page 30: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

Don’t worry. You’ll have it some other time.

Now, check the list of local favourites and pick:

a good value restaurant/a budget restaurant/a cheap eat, a one-of-a-kind and memorable restaurant you can afford.

And don’t forget about street food served at London’s food markets.

With this you can’t go wrong.

To będzie celny strzał.

MANY FACES OF JACK’O’LANTERN

niedziela, 27 października 2013

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31.

It has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain,

a celebration of the end of the harvest season.

The word Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows' Evening also known as Hallowe'en,

All Hallows' Even or Hallows’ Eve (better known today as All Saints Day).

Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties

and carving jack-o-lanterns.

Jack-o-WHO? Well, it’s a long story, a legend actually. Try to find out yourself.

Take part in the pumpkin competition at school on 31 October! To make your Halloween carving one of a kind, simply be creative and use your imagination.

Short of ideas? Not to worry. Just search the Internet for an unusual pattern.

There are lots of them out there.

Page 40: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

Wiele obliczy halloweenowej dyni.

Halloween świętowane jest wieczorem 31 października.

Ma swoje korzenie w starożytnym Celtyckim święcie zwanym Samhain, kiedy obchodzono m. in. koniec zbiorów.

Jack KTO? To długa historia, a raczej legenda. Spróbujcie sami się dowiedzieć.

Weź udział w dyniowym konkursie w szkole 31 października!

Aby Twoja dynia była wyjątkowa po prostu bądź kreatywna/y i użyj swojej wyobraźni. Brakuje Ci pomysłu? Nie ma zwartwienia. Znajdź w Internecie niezwykły wzór. Jest ich tam mnóstwo.

AUTUMN CHEMISTRY

środa, 09 października 2013

Summer has been gone for a while. We can all feel the chill in the crisp air.

Instead of letting the autumn nostagia hit you and feeling downhearted:

1. Do this short quiz in autumn chemistry

Question: What gives leaves their green hue in spring and summer and red, brown or yellow in autumn?

Answer key: These color changes are the result of transformations in leaf pigments.

2. Admire the explosion of colours in the following picture:

Page 41: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

3. Pick a phrase which best describes what you see and learn some English:

incredibly beautiful and spectacular colours show vibrant spectrum of colours brilliant shades of golden yellow, fiery red, purple and brown most spectacular mixture of red, purple, orange and yellow gorgeous red, orange, or yellow end-of-the-season leaves vast array of beautiful colors

British English American English

autumn colours fall colors

autumn foliage fall foliage

Good news: You don’t have to travel to the Eastearn United States to see the best of it live. Take a walk in the nearsest park and enjoy what we call Polish Golden Autumn.

Lato odeszło już chwilę temu. Czuć chłód w rześkim powietrzu. Zamiast poddawać się jesiennej nostalgii i smutnemu nastrojowi:

1. Zrób krótki quiz z jesiennej chemii: 2. Pytanie: Co nadaje liściom zieloną barwę wiosną i latem, a czerwoną, brązową

i żółta jesienią? Odpowiedź: Te zmiany koloru są wynikiem transformacji w pigmentach liścia.

Page 42: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

2. Podziwiaj esplozję kolorów na zdjęciu:

niewiarygodnie piękny i spektakularny pokaz kolorów żywe spektrum kolorów genielane odcienie złotej żółtci, ognistej czerwieni, filoletu i brązu najbardziej spektakularna mieszanka ..... prześliczne czerwone, pomarańczowe lub żółte liście końca jesieni szeroki wachlarz pięknych kolorów foliage=liście

I DREAM MY PAINTIING, AND I PAINT MY DREAM

poniedziałek, 06 maja 2013

Imagine a perfectly clear, cloudless night sky. Or a sky with a small cloud here and there. A sky full of stars. A starry night. We don’t get to see something like that too often but if we do, it’s absolutely awe-inspiring.

Well, you don’t have to wait till mid-July, travel to the Mazury and count on good weather to experience it. It’s enough to look at one of Vincent van Gogh’s most famous oil paintings Starry Night (1889). Thanks to the Internet you don’t even have to travel to New York to visit the Museum of Modern Art ( www.moma.org ), where the painting is exhibited. Here it is:

To enjoy it even more, I recommend listening to a beautiful song Vincent by Don Mac Lean.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxHnRfhDmrk

The song was written in 1970. Mc Lean was inspired by a print of Van Gogh’s painting “Starry Night,” and he realized that he could write a song about the artist through the painting.

Wyobraźcie sobie idealnie czyste, bezchmurne niebo nocą. Albo niebo z chmurą tu i tam.

Oto on.

Dla lepszych wrażeń, polecam wysłuchanie pięknej piosenki pt. "Vincent" Dona Mc Leana.

A QUESTION TO THINK ABOUT AT EASTER

sobota, 30 marca 2013

I had a poem for you at Christmas. I could use the same poem today considering the extraordinary winter-is-still-here weather circumstances. But I won’t.

It’s Easter 2013 and the mystery of Which came first, the chicken or the egg? remains unsolved. So how about a different poem by the same poet:

I WON’T HATCH! Oh, I’m a chickie who lives in an egg, But I will not hatch, I will not hatch. The hens they all cackle, the roosters all beg, But I will not hatch, I will not hatch. For I hear all the talk of pollution and war As the people all shout and airplanes roar, So I’m staying in here where it’s safe and it’s warm,

And I WILL NOT HATCH!

(Where The Sidewalk Ends: The Poems and Drawings of Shel Silverstein. New York: Harper and Row, 1974.)

Fajnie by było, gdyby ktoś to przetłumaczył…… Może Ty? Czekam na zgłoszenia.

Małgorzata Wróbel

Page 45: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

A tymczasem:

Have a wonderful SPRING break Happy Easter!

Życzę Wam udanej WIOSENNEJ przerwy. Wesołych Świąt Wielkanocnych!

CHRISTMAS TIME!

czwartek, 20 grudnia 2012

Forget the stress and commotion of the season. Read this poem and it’ll get you into the Spirit of Christmas.

Zapomnij o stresie i zamieszaniu wokół świąt. Przeczytaj ten wiersz a poczujesz świąteczny nastrój.

Santa and the Reindeer

“This is the hour,” said Santa Claus, “The bells ring merrily.” Then on his back he slung his pack, And into his sleigh climbed he. “On, Dancer! On, Prancer! On, Donner and Blitzen! On Comet and Cupid!” cried he. And all the reindeers leaped but one, And that one stood silently. He had pulled the sleigh for a thousand years, And never a word spoke he. Now he stood in the snow, and he whispered low – “Oh what do you have for me?”“I have games and toys for girls and boys,” Said Santa cheerily. The reindeer stood as if made of wood – “But what do you have for me?” “The socks are hung, the bells are rung!” Cried Santa desperately. The reindeer winked at a falling star – “But what do you have for me?” Then Santa reached into his beard, And he found a tiny flea, And he put it into the reindeer’s ear, And the reindeer said, “For me? Oh gee!”

Page 46: DECEMBER WISHES - EduPageToday we know that her name is Sharbat Gula. When they found her again she was 28, maybe 29, or 30. Even she didn't know for sure. A picture is worth a thousand

And into the blue away they flew, Away they flew with the flea. And the moral of this yuletide tale You know as well as me.

(Where The Sidewalk Ends: The Poems and Drawings of Shel Silverstein. New York: Harper and Row, 1974.)
