Putting Your Best Stitch ForwardTips for Entering Your Quilts in Juried Exhibitions and for Keeping the Dallas Quilt Celebration Entries Committee Sane

As you know, the deadline for entries for the annual Dallas Quilt Celebration is coming up at the January Guild meeting. As a former chairman of the entries committee and long-time member of the Show Committee, while serving as Vice President for Programs & Workshops, Judy Kriehn decided it would be helpful to put together a “homegrown” program that would provide insight for Guild members who are either planning an entry for the Dallas show or even considering entering one of the big juried quilt shows like one of the American Quilters Society shows, a Mancuso show, or one of the International Quilt Festival competitions.

She is tapping into the expertise and experience of Guild pals like Barbara Oliver Hartman and Shelly Goodwyn to bring this dog and pony show to work. Topics we’ll be covering include:

What judges look for in an award-winning quilt•How to interpret the rules•How to decide what category your quilt should be entered in•Why some of those crazy rules even exist•Tips for photographing your quilt•Since Judy is quite accomplished at the art of procrastination, while she has

had it on the agenda for over a year, she only began asking for co-presenters a few days ago. In other words, there’s just no telling what you’ll see and hear. If all goes well, you’ll laugh at funny stuff and want to take notes on helpful hints. If it falls flat – well, then if nothing else, you can just laugh and point…

QGD Annual Retreat LAST CALL for RETREATERS!Kay Cox - [email protected] & Mary Lord - [email protected], Retreat Co-Chairs

We are down to the wire on registrations for the January Retreat at Tanglewood.

Dates are Thursday, January 15 – Monday, January 19, 2009. We have a great group already registered and I have been advised about another 10-12 folks who plan to go but have not registered yet. December 5th is the absolute deadline for getting your paperwork to me. At that time, the

additional rooms in our block will be turned back to the hotel to use for other guests. Additions after that date will be based on availability at the hotel.

Please find the registration form on the QGD web site, complete the form, send to me with your check, and join in the fun. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us ASAP.

We’ll start 2009 on the right foot with New Mexico quilter and hawk rescue worker, Gail Garber.

Ms. Garber is an internationally recognized contemporary quilt artist. She is a published author, lecturer, workshop leader and avid quilt designer, best known for her colorful free form flying geese and medallion style quilts and wall hangings. The Thursday, January 8th lecture will be How Do I Get There: Every Quilter’s Journey. Gail describes the lecture this way: “We all have to start somewhere! This light and lively trunk show shares both triumphs and tragedies learned in the natural growth process of quiltmaking.”

Gail’s workshops are a great hit wherever she goes to lecture. We’ve chosen two special workshops for her visit here:

Sensational Stars• (Friday) Explore the design process used to create one-of-a-kind, circular stars. Students will learn drafting, color selection, and stitching techniques as they create their own original design star. The Goose Is Loose! Piecing Free-•Form Shapes (Saturday)

New!!Early Bird Workshop

Registration Discount

Starting with our January 2009 workshops, Guild members can receive a $5.00 discount for each workshop in 2009 if you pay for a workshop 30 days prior to the workshop.

That means you pay $35.00 at the December 4th Guild meeting or email workshop coordinator Marie at [email protected] or send to Quilter’s Guild of Dallas, Inc. Workshops, c/o Marie Zaczkowski, 1105 Meadow Lane, Sachse, TX 75048 postmarked by December 9, 2008 for the Gail Garber workshops which will be held on January 9 & 10th, 2009. Each workshop will cost $40.00 for Guild members after the 30 day deadline. SIGN UP EARLY!!!

Learn the drafting and piecing techniques for flying geese in the round, loose curves, or swirls. They can be simply designed and easily stitched using paper piecing techniques. Both workshops will have design

process instruction as well as creating and stitching original designs which have the possibility of becoming wall hangings or jacket panels. The sky is the limit. Patterns ($7.00) and fabric kits ($35.00) are optional. Check her out her website at www.gailgarberdesigns.com for a peek at what’s in store!

Why not start the new year by learning a new technique, shared with fellow quilting friends? Take advantage of the “early bird” discount, and sign up at the December Guild meeting or by mail.

Twas the night before mini auction:composed by Bonnie McElearney, Mini-Auction Co-chairman

‘Twas the night before mini auction, when all through the hall

Not a volunteer was stirring, but all were on call;

The quilts were hung on the rods with care,In hopes that quilters soon would be there;The winners were nestled all snug in their

beds,While visions of first placed ribbons

danced in their heads;And Mary in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,Had just settled down for a short little nap,When out on the highway there arose such

a clatter,I sprang from my chair to see what

was the matter.(See Twas the Night, page 6)

Wanted: Quilt Show VolunteersHere we are again, deep in planning 2009 Quilt Celebration. It is

not too early to send in your volunteer form or email me at [email protected]. Volunteer early to be sure to get the job you want, at the time you want.

Many volunteers have already been working diligently to prepare for our annual show. We need to staff many positions for our Quilt Celebration in March. Please be generous with your time. YOU are important to the success of our show. We could not be such a large completely volunteer run show without your help and the help of all of our members and even many non-members. (for more information, see “Volunteers” on page 6.)

Thank you!

‘Twas the Nightcontinued from page 4Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the packages and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen rain

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature quilt with eight tiny nine patches my dear!

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be a trick.

More rapid than stitchers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

“Now, Tonya! now, Frances! now, Barbara and Judy!

On, Andrea! on Marie! on, Donna and Virginia!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, they stitch to the sky,

So up to the house-top the stitchers, they flew,

With the car full of minis, and a large quilt too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing and pawing of each little needle.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,

Down the hall Richard came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of fabric he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The knot of his thread he held tight in his teeth,

And the spool of it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And Mary laughed when she saw him, in spite of herself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled the mini wall; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

He gave a nod, and away he did go;He sprang into his car, to his team

gave a whistle,And away he scurried as quick as a

whistle.But I heard him exclaim, ere he

drove out of sight,“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”
