Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland is putting together a committee to help plan activities for this momentous year. We still need a few girl committee members to provide input. The committee would also like to hear your ideas about how we should celebrate 100 years strong with Girl Scouts. If you have a suggestion or would like to be a part of this historical event please e-mail [email protected] with your ideas.

Stay Involved and Make New Friends Ambassador Girl Scout Jessica Kennedy of Colby certainly knows how to make new friends, and keep them! As a 12-year member of Girl Scouts, Jessica has been able to enjoy a wide variety of exciting Girl Scout experiences. Her most memorable experience was serving on the national board of lmk.girlscouts.org, an online safety Web site created for girls and their parents by GSUSA and Microsoft Windows. Being involved with LMK was awesome!, said Jessica. I got to go to Seattle and New York, and I made the most amazing friends. By using text messages and Facebook, these 10 girls from across the US have remained close, and are even planning a trip to North Carolina together in the summer of 2011. Jessica thinks of the group as a little family and plans on keeping in touch even after high school. Ive been able to do so many things because I stayed in Girl Scouting, said Jessica. Our troop has helped our local community through service projects, and now I even have close friends across the country. There are so many opportunities, even scholarships! I would encourage all Girl Scouts to stay involved.

Learn more about Jessica and online safety at lmk.girlscouts.org.

A Great Honor Madison Girl Scout Troops 30127 and 30103 enjoyed the weekend camping at Fall River State Park. The weekend attraction was the 8th Annual Mountain Man Rendezvous. The girls have participated in the rendezvous for the last five years. This year was a special year because Dave Yellowhand Clark, medicine man Lone Wolf KenFeudner, and their friend Reg, held an adoption ceremony. They adopted the troops as their granddaughters and the leaders as their daughters and son. The ceremony was carried out in the traditional way of Lone Wolfs ancestors. This was a great honor for all those involved. The rendezvous itself had many traders and trappers selling goods and living in period tents, pyramids and tipi lodges. The girls were able to get a feel of what it was like in the 1800s when they really got together. They were also able to watch a few competitions in black powder shooting, tomahawk throwing, and a ladies skillet toss. These were popular in the 1800s. At the days end they all settled down and curled up in their sleeping bags and drifted off to sleep under the tipi lodge poles and canvas that were slightly stained with smoke.

Fredoniaopoly Receives 1st Place Girls from Junior Troop 70235, Cadette Troop 70409 and Brownie Troop 70134 puttogether a Fredoniaopoly float for the Fredonia Homecoming parade. The theme was Explore Fredonia. They took pictures of things to do and see in Fredonia and placed them around the float. They also took pictures of several houses in Fredonia and placed them on top of the float, along with pictures of three motels in town. They made playing pieces by spray painting a boot, car, horse, and a thimble (a small trash can upside down). The girls had a lot of fun and learned some interesting things about their town. The girls hard work paid off, the float won first place in the parade! The girls were presented with three $25 gift certificates to use in Fredonia. They are planning to buy a CD player for the Girl Scout room so they can learn new Girl Scout songs. The rest of the money will be used to help fund their Mother/Daughter Cook-off and Juliette Low Birthday Party. Way to go girls!

explored nutrition, physical health, alternative and fun ways to exercise, prevention of disease and health issues, and careers in the medical field.

Lets Get Movin The 1st of the series, Lets Get Movin, took place on Oct. 9 and allowed girls to work with the K-State Salina Dance Squad, the Spirit Cats, at Central High School to learn a fun dance routine and discover how great exercise is. Mystery Trip

The second event in the series, Mystery Trip was a full day of activities specially chosen for girls to learn about personal health and well-being. The girls spent the day traveling to different mystery locationsthe bus driver was the only one who knew where they were going (besides parents who received an itinerary). The first stop in the trip was to visit with Dr. Trent Davis, neurologist, and learn more about how the body works as well

as career choices for those interested. Girls were able to explore how our nervous system and muscles work together in our bodies. The next stop on the mystery trip was Central Kansas Foundation (CKF) . CKF works with the community to prevent and treat alcohol and substance abuse. The girls were able to learn about why it is critically important to stay away from alcohol and drugs. The final stop on the trip was the YMCA where girls learned about nutrition and healthy eating, exercise and stress relief. Girls were able to enjoy a session of Yoga to relieve the stresses of the day.

Girl, MD: Medical Careers Day The third fall event in the Healthy Today, Healthy Tomorrow series, Girl MD, allowed Girl Scouts to work in conjunction with Brown Mackie Colleges medical teaching staff and students to learn more about the variety of fields available in health care. The event, which took place at the Brown Mackie Campus, gave girls a chance to do hands-on activities and learn in a college-level setting to inspire a passion in both the health care professions but also in taking a role in their own health.

Girl Scouts Pay Respect to the United States through Flag Retirement Ceremony Girl Scouts are one of the few organizations that are allowed to conduct a flag retirement ceremony which involves respectfully putting a torn or tattered flag to rest. Katharine Piper and Cierra Hladky of Troop 20264 and Kya Rabenseifner of Troop 20247 as well as Doris Maddox, co-leader of 20264 all assisted with a flag ceremony in Great Bend earlier this fall. Thank you to Tamara Rabenseifner for sharing these photos of the ceremony!

Making the World a Better Place The Girl Scouts of Wichita East Service Unit challenged themselves this fall with Project Re-directory, a community service project offered by SBC. Through collecting phone books, these Girl Scouts earned a fun patch recognizing their hard work. They collected 4,550 books and there were 20 troops and163 girls participating. Additional contributions came from Sedgwick County North Service Unit, Wichita West Service Unit and Girl Scouts in Harvey County leading to 150 more girls earning the patch! Watch for this challenge in 2011.

Fashion Passion Girl Scouts is about making new friends, learning new things, and helping the commu-nity. Cowley County Girl Scouts jumped at the chance to assist with the 2010 Rescues and Runways event. Girl Scouts provided entertainment as they modeled in the runway show in addition to collecting needed pet items at the Winfield Country Club on Sept. 26. After discovering a need in their area, girls were able to connect with other local organizations to take action and bring awareness to the cause as a united front.

Girl Scouts Grow in St. John New troops have sprung up in St. John! A sign-up booth at the St. John Jubilee Celebration brought seven more girls to this troop in May and they now have 13 members. A highlight so far this year was learning how to make hair bows and wearing them the next day to school. These Girl Scouts exceeded their goal with their first Fall Opportunity Sale and are looking ahead to the Cookie Sale. Welcome Girl Scouts!

Taking Action This fall, Pratt Girl Scouts collected coats, hats, mittens, and scarves to provide to local churches and elementary schools as part of their Warming Hearts & Hands coat drive. Afterwards, Girl Scouts celebrated with a costume party at the Girl Scout Cabin. There were games, crafts, and the story of Juliette Gordon Low. Check out the donut fishing game! Birds of a Feather Twenty-five Cadettes and Ambassadors attended the Masters of the Sky event at Eagle Valley Raptor center in Cheney in October. They got an up-close encounter with some of the birds of prey. They learned facts about different raptors and their importance in our Kansas environment. Some of the birds that Girl Scouts were able to feed, watch, and learn about were the Red-tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Turkey Vulture, and Bald Eagles among others. Girl Scouts went into the flight cage to get a VIP view of the American Bald Eagles named WSU (pronounced Wha-Shu) and Cessna. Girls also got to experience a release of a Great Horned Owl who had been nursed back to health and was returning to the wild. Did you know that eagles smile by opening their beak? Neither did we. Check out these Girl Scouts smiling at WSU as he posed for the picture.

Bear-A-Thon a Success The Girl Scouts in Reno County dressed bears in hand-made Boy Scout and Girl Scout uniforms and donated them to local organizations such as the Reno County Emergency Childrens Shelter, Hutchinson Police Department, SRS, Reno County Juvenile Intake and Assessment as well as other similar groups. The community purchased bears and dropped them in bins across Hutchinson before the girls collected them Oct. 17. Look out for good things coming from this group! Happy Birthday Juliette Low A Fall Kick Off and Juliette Low Birthday Event was held Oct. 2 at Saint Marys in Derby. There were stations demonstrating traditional Girl Scout practices in outdoor training like dutch oven cooking and setting up tents in addition to face painting, cupcake decorating, and spin art. The Derby Optimist Club provided a snow cone machine and moon bounces. One Girl Scout even brought Juliette a present! The Junior/Cadette Troop #40710 made display boards for each of the four World Centers and a story board about Juliette Gordon Lows life and birthplace in Savannah, GA. This board can be seen in the lobby at the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Wichita Office, 360 Lexington Road. Girl-led activities like the cupcake decorating booth and a campfire SWAP booth were fine examples of leadership. Hats are off to these Girl Scouts for celebrating where they came from as well as planning out where they are going. Juliette Daisy Low would be proud!

Juliette Low is the founder of the Girl Scout movement. Oct. 31, 2010 was her 150th birthday!
