Incomparable Glenn CloseGlenn Close transforms into the character of Albert Nobbs, a woman who loses herself masquerading as a man in order to survive during the 19th century in Dublin, Ireland. Entertainment Editor Nick Nicholson interviews Close about reconnecting with the character that she portrayed nearly three decades ago in the 1982 theatrical performance developed by Simone Benmussa.

30 Jacki Breckon: Profi le of a PhilanthropistTanya Sterling talks with this multi-faceted philanthropist extraordinaire who has dedicated her time to various organizations in her community and around the world. When she is not giving back, she is parenting her teenage daughter, caring for her father and raising exotic horses on her Rosenberg, Texas farm. One thing is for sure – this Texas gal is passionate about everything she does.

A warm, caring personality and southern charm makes Kathryn Boone a real gem to the community she serves. Her reputation for service, coupled with her natural grace and impeccable style, made her an unbeatable candidate as the person to greet and serve clients visiting Sugar Land Mortuary.

Like most of us, for me, the holiday season always brings more. More time spent with friends and family, more food I can’t resist, more fun activities, more opportunities for sharing and giving. And, of course, there’s the other side of

more. More multi-tasking, more projects to complete, more things on my daily “to do” list, more stress, more anxiety – a whole lot more of just that – more. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of it all and not take time to devote to the more fun and fulfilling things. Yes, the holidays bring us more, and how we manage more makes all the difference.

I’d like to tell you that I’ve had a grand epiphany of how to manage not only the busy holiday season without any stress or anxiety, but life in general – an easy, all-encompassing answer that’s an instant fix. While I haven’t been able to figure out the answer to it all, Dr. Kimberly Cress has an insightful take on improving your life by reaching out and helping others. While we may not be able to do it all and have it all, there’s intrinsic value in sharing what we do have – our time, our talents, our resources – with others. Kim says, “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything; they simply make the most of everything.” I couldn’t agree more.

In this issue, you’ll meet a woman who has lived that philosophy throughout her life. She embodies the true meaning of the word philanthropist. Jacki Breckon began sharing her gifts with others in the Philippines by helping place orphaned children in American homes. And that was just the beginning. Jacki has spent her life helping others and seven years ago, started a unique event benefitting women in need: the Girlfriends’ Giggle. According to Jacki, she believes that “one of the ways you will find true happiness is when you are serving people.” Yes, I believe Jacki is onto something.

The three young men who founded Krochet Kids International learned at any early age how to manage more by both giving and receiving, as did the founder of TOMS, a trendy shoe that helps people make everyday choices to improve the lives of children. We love these companies, their philosophies and their products that we feature in this issue’s The List: Things We Love. These companies show us that we can give simply by making informed choices when we spend our money.

So during the season, and frankly, our lives of more, it’s really all about perspective –tackling the more with realistic expectations and a positive outlook. American businessman and record label executive Allen Klein said, “A little perspective, like a little humor, goes a long way.” This from the man who managed talent like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones which, while lucrative, I am certain was a formidable task. Yes, I bet a little perspective with a dash of humor helped him quite a bit.

So, if you see me scurrying around this season in my Santa hat, hair askew but laughing all the way, don’t think I’ve finally lost it. I’m just keeping the more of it all in perspective!

Thank you to our readers, advertisers and subscribers for another wonderful year, and for allowing us to share in the more of your busy lives.

Stay focused!

The Gem of

S ome women we know have the ability to add that special

touch and bring something to a home, a classroom, or an organization that truly brings out the shine. We call these women gems. Gems know just what the room needs to make it pop, where to place the child’s artwork, or how to host the perfect gathering.

They always know how to make everyone feel welcome, seem to know the right things to say, and they know when it is simply best to say nothing at all. This issue of Focus on Women features just such a woman who is known throughout the Greater Fort Bend area as one of those women with that special touch. She is known to many as Mrs. Kathryn Boone, the gem of Sugar Land Mortuary. Even the beautiful and well-appointed Sugar Land Mortuary has benefi ted from her touch, and like the shine of most gems, the results have been hard to miss.

W hen L. Donnell Williams, founder of Sugar Land Mortuary

(SLM), fi rst decided to open his new fl ag-ship funeral home in Sugar Land, he knew that he wanted this location to be a refl ec-tion of the community that it would serve, and he wanted the community to imme-diately discern the warm and welcoming difference in a facility that is locally and

independently owned and operated. He also knew that the most important step in creating the desired experience at Sugar Land Mortuary was hiring the right staff. He was especially concerned with selecting his new Facility Manager and knew that it would be the most important hiring decision that he would make. Williams was seeking a member of the community

who had a heart and a reputation for ser-vice and a very special personality. While in the course of an exhaustive search, his fellow Sugar Land Rotary member, Bill Singletary, recommended Kathryn Boone. Singletary spoke so highly of her years of church service, her southern charm, caring personality, and stylish fl air that Williams knew he had to meet her.

about the idea, Kathryn met with Williams to discuss a possible position at his new funeral home. She had never worked in the funeral indus-try before, nor had ever considered it. “I am so glad that I set aside my inhibi-tions and agreed to meet with Mr. Wil-

liams,” says Kathryn. When the pair met for the fi rst time, Williams recalls that he was not disappointed. She was everything that his fellow Rotary member said she was. The two also found that they had a lot in com-mon. For starters, they both care a great deal about providing service to their communi-ty. In the 14 years that Kathryn has been a

member of Sugar Land First United Meth-odist Church, she has served the community through a variety of church ministries. “As I continued to speak with Mrs. Boone,” says Williams, “it was clear that her heart for oth-ers and her service to the community were impressive.” According to Williams, Kath-ryn’s reputation for service, coupled with her natural grace and impeccable style, made her an unbeatable candidate. This was the per-son he wanted to greet and serve the public as they entered Sugar Land Mortuary.

In reference to her acceptance of Williams’ offer to join Sugar Land Mortuary, Kathryn mused, “I found the assurance I needed in realizing that without being aware, I had been preparing for this position for quite some time.” Her experience as a Church Lay Leader and a Prayer Leader gave her the con-fi dence to help families through the diffi cult process of making fi nal arrangements, and she found that she actually had a gift for this type of work.

We asked Kathryn if working at a funeral

Another family wrote, “Kathryn Boone was absolutely outstanding. She did all she could

to make a very diffi cult timeframe work for the benefi t of my family. She is truly an excellent

professional with a family point of view.”

home has altered her perspective on life, and if so, how. “Well, you can’t help seeing things a little differently. One of the things that I now see more clearly is how unexpected the expected can be. We all know that the day is coming, but just not when, and when it comes, we are so often unprepared for it.”

Kathryn states that she has also been sur-prised by the difference that pre-planning makes for the family. She has observed how much easier things are for those families who have pre-need arrangements in place. “Before working at Sugar Land Mortuary and becom-ing a Licensed Pre-Need Counselor,” says Kathryn, “it never occurred to me what an important step this really is. When families are distraught over the loss of a loved one, it is much more difficult to plan services, while trying to keep a budget in mind, and taking in all of the differing opinions of the surviv-ing spouse, children and siblings.” Kathryn has observed that pre-planning allows the family to focus on what is most important; they can focus on taking care of each other and bidding their loved one farewell. “No matter where families may have made their pre-need arrangements, we are able to accept those arrangements and honor the final wish-es of the loved one who has passed, or the family member who had the forethought to plan when their loved one was ill. The most important thing is to do it before the need arises so that everyone has peace of mind.”

When asked what she enjoys most about being the face of Sugar Land Mortuary, Kath-ryn answers, “Being of help to people in a way that I never thought I could and being a part of something much larger than myself. My work here is truly one of the most fulfil-ling things I have ever done, and sometimes it’s a little overwhelming.”

As the Facility Manager of this new insti-tution, the community’s response to Kath-ryn has also been somewhat overwhelming. Every family that uses Sugar Land Mortuary receives a survey card following their service. SLM has received a surprisingly high response rate to the surveys, and a number of personal-

ly written letters. A high response rate is usu-ally an indication that people have something to say that is far from neutral. While most of the comments rave about Sugar Land Mor-tuary’s beautiful facility, respondents were equally impressed with the care that they re-ceived when they were there. Many of the letters and surveys specifically address their experience with Kathryn and the comfort she provided during one of their most difficult experiences. Some of the comments from the surveys and letters that we saw were, “My experience could not have been better. Kath-ryn and all the personnel were exceptional.” In commenting on the initial arrangement meeting, another gentleman described Kath-ryn as, “Charming, warm, insightful, caring.” Another family wrote, “Kathryn Boone was absolutely outstanding. She did all she could to make a very difficult timeframe work for the benefit of my family. She is truly an excel-lent professional with a family point of view.”

With these exceptional reviews, it seems that Kathryn has been a pivotal part of Sugar Land Mortuary’s success. “For any new busi-ness coming into an area, it is important to establish the right relationship with the com-munity from the very first day you open the doors, and hiring Mrs. Boone has proven to be one of my best decisions,” says Williams.

Like other places in the community that this gem has touched, Kathryn Boone has helped Sugar Land Mortuary to shine.

“My work here is truly one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done, and sometimes it’s a little

overwhelming.” ~ Kathryn Boone

A n employer was going to be gone for an extended period of time. He called in his three employees and assigned responsibilities to each. To his most productive he gave 60%, to his second he assigned 25% and his third received 15%. Upon

his return, he called in each one for an accounting. His first employee had doubled his business. “Well done,” said the employer. His second employee also doubled his business. “Well done,” said he. But his third employee was slothful and had not even tried to grow and nurture his interest. The owner immediately fired that employee and gave it to the first employee, saying that which does not grow will die.

This 2,000-year-old thinly disguised parable can be used even today. For us to grow and prosper, we must give to our most productive not our least productive. The American business person has been castigated as being vile and greedy, while our government can solve our problems. Whether it be the U.S. mail, Medicaid, Medicare or balancing the national budget, I think the government has proven they are the least productive of all.

As we enter this election season, let’s hold our elected officials accountable for their lack of productivity. One interesting aspect of this political season is that all candidates are being forced to focus on the economy and jobs. Let American business grow and create productive jobs. Doing so will take people off government payroll and create new taxpayers as well. Our stock market is beginning to reflect that possibility. Remove the barriers and restrictions of government red tape and as Bachman-Turner Overdrive sang in 1974, let America get back to “takin’ care of business.”

Singing a different tune? The Hardee Investment Group will have you singing in key when you let us help you take care of business. We’ll be working in harmony in no time. Call us today at 713-853-0879 or visit us online at www.HardeeInvestmentGroup.com to learn how we can help you.

Dr. Afreen Pappa is a member of the American Academy of Family Medicine and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. She was named one of Houston’s Top Docs 2009 by H Texas Magazine.

The ancient Roman poet and phi-losopher Titus Lucretius Carus once said, “What is food to one, is to

others bitter poison.” Food sensitivities are unique to each person due to individual biochemistry and are infl uenced by genetics, environment, lifestyle, overall health and other factors. Each person with food sen-sitivities will have different symptoms that vary in degree of severity, age of onset, dura-tion, location and amount of food necessary to trigger symptoms. Only an individual-ized diet that eliminates specifi c intolerant foods can help ensure that allergens and toxins that interfere with an individual’s health do not overload the body.

It is now recognized that food sensitivity, a common but frequently ignored medi-cal condition, may cause or contribute to many of the ailments that plague us. Proper diagnosis of food sensitivity can help cure

a wide range of health care problems rang-ing from obesity to migraine headaches, from depression to diabetes. By removing identifi ed foods that disturb an individual’s unique biochemistry, the body is allowed to heal and operate at its optimal performance. Treating food sensitivity may have the same medical signifi cance in curing chronic health problems as did the discovery of penicillin.

Food sensitivities occur when the body’s immune system cells react to a chemical that either naturally occurs in food or is added to it and is different from food allergies. The modern diet of processed and adulterated foods contributes to food sensitivities by introducing more unnatural and foreign substances into the body and not providing adequate levels of nutrients necessary for proper liver detoxifi cation.

So, how can you tell if you have food sensitivities that cause or contribute to the

Is Your Body Telling You Something About the Food You Eat?

excess weight, fatigue, headaches, food crav-ings, or chronic illnesses? A simple blood test, the ALCAT test, can assess sensitivity to over 200 common foods and food additives, molds, environmental chemicals and more. Most individuals can overcome their food sensitivities by eliminating the offending item from their diet for up to six months, then reintroducing it in a four day rotational meal plan. If you are tired of feeling tired, suffering from migraine headaches, hav-ing diffi culty losing weight, dealing with a chronic illness, or just want to perform your best in life, eliminating reactive foods can help.

Helping you look AND feel your best. That’s what we do.

feature By Nick Nicholson

G lenn Close’s connection to the character of Albert Nobbs stretch-es back almost three decades to

her 1982 performance in Simone Benmussa’s theatrical interpretation of the short story, Albert Nobbs, by nineteenth century Irish author George Moore. “I think that Albert is one of the truly great characters, and the story, for all its basic simplicity, has a strange emotional power,” began Close, whose turn in the Off-Broadway production prompted rave reviews and garnered the actress an Obie Award. Even as Close’s career sky-rocketed, the character remained with her. “There’s something deeply affecting about Albert’s life,” the actress continued. “She never stopped continuing to move me. I became very busy in my career, but always thought that Albert’s story would make a wonderful movie.”

Close has worked continuously on story ideas across the intervening years, develop-ing a passionate attachment to the character of Nobbs: a woman living in 19th century Britain who has survived by disguising herself as a man and becoming a waiter. As the story begins, we find her working at Morrison’s, a reputable hotel in Dublin, where she has been for past two decades. “Albert doesn’t want to end up in the poorhouse,” explained

Close. “At that time, Ireland was extremely poor. Around the corner from the hotel was abject poverty. She knows that without her job, that’s where she could end up. And, she knows anyone can get fired at any moment. There is a sense of fear among all the hotel workers.”

When the audience meets Albert, the character has played her role as a male servant in Morrison’s Hotel for so long that she has lost her own, true identity. “She doesn’t even know her real name,” Close said. “She was an illegitimate child, raised by a woman who was paid to take care of her and who never revealed Albert’s true identity. I figure the woman was paid to not tell because family didn’t want the child to, one day, show up on their doorstep. So Albert, who already didn’t know who she really was, disappeared into the guise of a waiter when she was fourteen-years-old. When we meet her thirty years later, she is isolated and invisible, albeit an impeccable servant, having lived in hotels her whole life.”

Benmussa’s play adaptation of George Moore’s Albert Nobbs was minimalistic with a considerable amount of mime used to tell the story, but even so, Close believed that the tale’s poignancy, heartbreak and humor, the latter realized by a wonderful

collection of characters who visit Morrison’s Hotel, would fuel a film adaptation. “The play was very austere,” conceded the actress. “The power of the story is like a simple glass of water. When light reflects in a glass of water, it creates something extremely complex. The story is simple and linear, but it touches on complex human issues that reflect on everyone’s own life and everyone’s own baggage, and gives them something to take away as well. I’m hoping it will be universally appealing.”

The primary character, and the central point around which the story turns, is, of course, Albert Nobbs. Close noted that she’s able to carry off the role because of Albert’s position in the hotel. “The key is that Albert is a very good servant,” Close said. “Servants weren’t supposed to make eye contact so that was very much in her favor. There’s comport-ment, the way of moving, with pants that are a bit too long and shoes that are a bit too big, but I think the biggest challenge for me is lowering the voice and the accent.”

All of the main characters in Albert Nobbs find their lives affected by the quiet, retiring butler, and while the film unfolds as a tragedy, it plays with levity and light-ness of touch. “The piece is not showy, and there’s an awful lot of fun going on,” said

Close. “You can knock quite a lot of laughs out of something that is supposed to be very poignant and sad and tragic.” Close said that she recognized the humor in the story from the very outset. “Through all these years of working on Albert Nobbs, I knew that there was humor in it, even if other people didn’t see it. It’s not leaping off of

the page, as it’s not that kind of humor. It comes through the character and nuance and situation. I knew when people saw all these characters together that it is really fun. There are some beautiful moments.”

Close concluded, “I’ve always thought that if I could do the Albert of my dreams, without major compromise, with an impec-

cable team, then I could retire! The fact that this particular group of people finally gathered together to tell this particular story is truly wonderful. For years, I struggled to make this movie happen, but the time was never right. Then it happened. It was just meant to be. The perfect time with the perfect team. We made it!”

Sometimes an architect successfully crashes through the glass ceiling of conformity to deliver truly stunning homes. Architect and builder Talal Sabbagh has done that with the three story home he designed for his family, a truly unusual and beautiful home right here in Katy.

“I designed the home very carefully for the lot we selected,” said Sabbagh. The home faces west with views of the lake and a beautiful fountain on the rear. Everything about the home is designed to take in water views. When you enter the home, the fi rst thing you see is water. The covered patio connects to the home in a way to give the feeling of an extension to the home. The patio, the living room, and family

The principle clearly states that neighborhoods

This principle leads to uniformity; however, it can also

lead to yawns.

areas intermingle as one creating a feeling of grand indoor/outdoor space, which is exactly what the homeowners intended. The home shades the backyard in the afternoon, which allows hours of enjoyment even on the hottest summer day.

Most rooms in the home have views of the water. The third story was added to offer the owners a place for serenity and also offers a stunning view of the lake and nearby George Bush Park.

The two infl uences of design are two sources that could not be any more different—the Texas Hill Country and Asia. The Texas Hill Country manifests itself in the stone, the woodwork and the general feel. The Asian infl uence can be seen in the design, colors and décor selection. Many people would assume that these infl uences would clash, but they add to a truly beautiful and relaxing home for the family.

Few homes more completely break the rules of conformity. However, few homes will make the homeowners and guests more aware that some rules are made to be broken.

Holiday Wine Finds

‘T is the season! The holidays are here, and gift giving and family gatherings become the norm. So, you ask yourself many questions while going

over your to-do lists and checking them twice. What to cook? What to wear? Who to invite? Which wines to select? Worry no more because I have the solution to at least one of those questions. I have selected a simple list of wines that make great gifts and holiday gathering selections. But, before I go into details about the wines, here are a few simple tips in fi nding the perfect wine for you this holiday season.

1. Spend a little more. Everyday wines that are the go-to’s for you and your friends do not necessarily

make the best gifts. The wine gift is meant to be special, so select something that you wish you could drink every day.

2. Seek the advice of your local retail wine steward. These guys and gals know the latest and

greatest of the hard-to-fi nd wines. In other words known as “the good stuff,” restaurant only wines that were once impossible to fi nd in retail are now available in many grocery retailers.

3. Stick to the crowd pleasers. Bringing the right wine to a holiday party is a task that could hold

you up in a wine department for longer that you ever anticipated. Stick to crowd pleaser varietals such as Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Here are my picks for the holidays:

4. Be proud, go local! Texas wines have vastly improved in quality in recent years. Family

members visiting from outside Texas maybe surprised when you serve a Texas Riesling or Cabernet Sauvignon.

5. Ring in the New Year with a Sparkling Wine instead of Champagne. Don’t get me wrong, I

love French Champagne, but with French wine prices souring to new heights, you may want to tap into the value of an Italian Prosecco or even a Sparkling Wine produced in the Champagne Method from the US West Coast. For those of you who love sweet wines, Muscato d’ Asti or Bianco would be a lovely choice to ring in 2012!

Messina Hof Cabernet Franc Cedar Crest Vineyard 2009

Be proud and go local with this Texas gem! In fact, this wine just beat out a number of other Cabernet Franc brands at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo Wine Competition. It’s a deep, dark, and rich red that’s full of complex aromas and fl avors. Your out-of-town guests are certain to enjoy! Available only at Specs. Retail :$20

Mirror Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2007

If you like Caymus, you will love Mirror. It’s one of those “allocated” wines that are hard to fi nd. Only 16 cases were shipped to Houston, and they are only available at select HEB’s. Absolutely perfect for gifts and an incredible Roasted Prime Rib Selection! Retail: $70

Unwined Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2010

The Russian River Valley produces some of the world’s fi nest Chardonnay grapes! This Chardonnay is destined to please all at your holiday gathering. Unwined is only aged in oak for about 3 months, making it a lighter and brighter wine that fairs with a wider variety of foods than a Chardonnay that’s masked in French oak. Oaky and buttery Chardonnays are great but are not necessarily the best in pairing with a wide variety of food. Available only at HEB. Retail: $13

Stivalli Sweet Bianco or RossoItaly NV

I’m not your average sweet wine consumer, but with sweet wines taking a larger share in the market than ever, might as well make it a great sweet selection! Stivalli Bianco “White” is made from 100% Muscato grapes and is light, refreshing, sweet, and bubbly. The Rosso is practically the same style but red andmade from a blend of premium red Italian varietals. This is an excellent choice for those seeking something less dry than the Brut or Extra Dry Sparkling Wines. Available only at HEB. Retail: $9

Schramsberg Brut Rose North Coast 2008

This is a beautiful sparkler! Ring in the New Year in true fashion when you pop open this gorgeous sparkler, and it’s not French! Schramsberg is located near Calistoga in Napa Valley, California is one of the most established producers of fi ne Sparkling Wines made in the Champagne Method. The wine is crisp, complex, and perfect with hors d’oeuvres. Available at most fi ne wine retailers.Retail: $40

Cinzano ProseccoVeneto, Italy DOC NV

One of my favorite go-to’s for a party! Prosecco has taken offlike a Texas wildfi re! It offersquality for value and is leadingthe pack amongst all other sparklers in terms of sales. Cinzano has been making wine for over 2 centuries and this pick is surely a fi ne example of generations of fi ne wine creation. Prosecco can range stylistically between dry andslightly sweet. Cinzano is light, crisp and refreshing, making ita perfect aperitif and crowdpleaser. Enjoy this wine at your holiday party or when you ringin the New Year! Available atmost fi ne wine retailers. insights & issues I By Jacquie Baly Chaumette, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Sugar Land

R eforming Medicare and Medicaid into a more efficient government service has been a contentious process at the very least. Many people using Medicare are rightly con-

cerned that their benefits might be taken away. The supporters of the health care bill can talk until they are blue in the face about the bill’s benefits, but the Medicare beneficiaries are scared and are unlikely to change their opinion. The Obama administration has lost this portion of the battle.

We conservatives understand the need for health care reform, but it has to be a sensible approach. So what should we do?

A good first step would be health care vouchers to solve some problems and help reform Medicare. School vouchers are popular with voters, and they force school systems to focus on performance and promote efficiency. A similar voucher pro-cess for health care might provide significant benefits. Families covered by multiple plans could consolidate their health care services. Some doctors who do not take Medicare patients due to reimbursement rates could utilize a voucher system to improve the quality and scope of their care A voucher system would also allow patient choice, with the effect of forcing the Medicaid and Medicare system to improve.

Democrats have long advocated the concept of a single-payer health care system similar to the ones currently in Canada and the United Kingdom. However, even a quick look at those examples shows that government-run health care systems are notoriously slow, inefficient and costly. When people are sick around the world, they come to the United States. In fact, they come to Houston because the care provided in this area is the best anywhere in the world. Whatever reforms we effectuate, they must not destroy our position as the leading medical provider.

Over the past ten years, the Texas legislature has been success-ful in limiting the impact of excessive verdicts against medical providers. Tort reform has reduced punitive damage awards and taken big steps to eliminating frivolous cases. This work is not done. Of course, there are still reasonable complaints against providers who misdiagnose, mismanage or neglect a patient’s proper treatment. We have all heard the horror stories about doctors who confuse patients, leave utensils inside surgery patients, or make an egregious misdiagnosis. But those stories are not the common ones. One way to ensure the truly injured receive justice, while keeping health care costs from becoming artificially inflated, is to develop clear standards of care to which all physicians must abide, and assign clear penalties – in the form of reasonable financial damages – for breaches of those standards and other transgressions.

How Do We Reform Healthcare?A Conservative Approach

Page 31: December-Jan-2012 - Focus on Women Magazine-Fort Bend County, Texas- Inspire, Educate, and Empower!

December 2011 / January 2012 l www.FOWmag.com 29

Another reform to consider is allow-ing families, individuals and businesses to purchase health insurance nationwide, which they cannot do presently. This would increase competition for their business, pro-vide a variety of choices, and improve the quality of those choices across the board. Further, individuals should be able to obtain insurance privately or through organiza-tions of their choice: employers, churches, professional associations or others. Obama’s budget has cultivated an era of taxing too much, borrowing too much, and spending too much. The President’s budget sets aside $630 billion over ten years, which, accord-ing to his administration, is “not suffi cient

to fully fund” health care but is the “fi rst crucial step.” For real reform, we can only do what we can pay for in full. The liberals are setting us up for a tax increase, and they will use health care “reform” to show why such a tax increase is necessary. They want to double federal taxes as a percent of the economy from roughly 20% today to 40%. Most of these new taxes would go toward funding socialized medicine and redistribut-ing wealth on a scale previously unseen in American politics. The net effort will be to dilute the quality of the U.S. medical system and penalize all of us without providing the intended benefi ts.

Conservative health care reform should

neither raise taxes nor increase the size of government. Health insurance should have nothing to do with your job unless you want it to. Shopping for health care should look more like currently shopping for prescription drugs, dental, vision, and cosmetic surgery, and less like currently going to the hospital or getting a checkup. The former is price transparent and market-responsive. The lat-ter is bureaucratic and doesn’t work.

There are many opportunities to improve health care in this state and across the coun-try. Unfortunately, there are more traps and dangers as well, and if we fall into one of these traps, the effect on our economy and the health care system will be staggering.

When people are sick around the world, they come tothe United States. In fact, they come to Houston because the care provided in this area is the best anywhere in the world. Whatever reforms we effectuate, they must not destroy our position as the leading medical provider.

J acki Breckon is a multi-faceted, international-yet-Texas kind of woman who is just as comfortable in an evening

gown at a gala as she is maintaining her family’s 10-acre horse ranch in Richmond, not to mention exploring various parts of the world. She spends her days being a wife to Karl, parenting her daughter Erika, raising rare Egyptian Arabian horses, taking care of her father and is a philanthropist extraordinaire.

Breckon’s life started out with an international fl air. Born to an Irish mom and a dad from Sri Lanka, Breckon’s parents met while studying at a university in London where Jacki and her brother, Eric, were soon born. The family relocated to the United States and eventually settled in Houston. This happened to be the summer right before Breckon started 3rd grade, and her parents suggested they utilize the summer months

by visiting family overseas. What occurred was a whirlwind tour of 43 countries over the course of 90 days including Singapore, England, Egypt and Ireland.

“My teacher kept thinking I had this vivid and wild imagination as I would talk about seeing the pyramids in Egypt,” said Breckon. “My mother fi nally contacted her and let her know that I actually did tour the Egyptian pyramids!”

With her father’s job as an engineer, Breckon lived in countries such as the Virgin Islands and Saudi Arabia and spent her fi rst two years of high school at a boarding school in Rome, Italy. She eventually married her husband, Karl, also an engineer, and continuing the life she led with her parents, the young couple relocated

to Philippines and then to Puerto Rico. It was in the Philippines where Breckon

started her journey in philanthropy. “There was an orphanage where the majority of the kids were AmeriAsian - most of the dads were American servicemen who left the island after they were sent back to the USA,” said Breckon. “An American priest ran this orphanage, and I helped place these kids in American homes. After that grand experience, I started volunteering wherever I happened to be in the world.”

Not only has Breckon volunteered ever since returning from overseas, she also kicked

it up a notch by starting Girlfriends’ Giggle, one of Fort Bend County’s premier all-female events benefi tting the Fort Bend Women’s Shelter. In its 7th year, Giggle, hosted by STARS (the auxiliary group which supports the center through special events and by assisting with agency projects) has become a popular “Grown Up Girls’ Pajama Party” which has raised nearly $300,000 to assist survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children since its inception in 2005.

The Girlfriends’ Giggle gives women the chance to hang out with their girlfriends while indulging in massages, new hair styles, make-up tips and much more. Women shop for home decor, clothes and shoes. Fort Bend’s best restaurants serve up delicious foods, and there are numerous, unique auction items. All proceeds go towards providing free and confi dential emergency shelter, counseling, crisis intervention and other supportive services provided by the Women’s Center.

“My main reason for starting Giggle and the main reason why I still am actively involved are the kids,” said Breckon. “We are one of the few Women’s Centers in the area that house both women and their kids – not only the women. My heart aches for these kids as they struggle to adjust to their new life

situation, whether temporary or permanent. So those little faces keep me motivated to raise funds for more services and shelter for these heart-broken families.”

The emergency shelter program provides both a 24-hour crisis hotline and emergency shelter for women and children who are victims of family violence and sexual assault. Services the center offers include shelter, food, clothing, emergency and onsite basic medical care, transportation, weekly case management, a wellness room, children’s services, and a Learning Resource Center. Shelter clients also have the option of individual, family, or group counseling to support their healing and growth into independent living.

In addition to Girlfriends’ Giggle, Breckon actively volunteers at her daughter Erika’s school, St. Laurence Catholic School. She is the past Chair of the Music Fest for the Fort Bend Women’s Center and was a provisional member in the Fort Bend Junior Service League. Breckon has also worked with Caring Critters and the Lighthouse of Houston. The Breckon family are active members of Sacred Heart Church in Richmond.

One of Breckon’s greatest joys is her family’s Egyptian Arabian horses. “There are only about 6,000 of these horses in the world, and we have owned approximately 20 of them

over the years,” said Breckon. Well-regarded in the Arabian horse

industry, the Breckons have been raising these animals for almost 20 years. One of their horses was a top national show horse and was eventually sold to the Crown Prince of Dubai.

Breckon’s greatest joy of her life is her 13 year-old daughter, Erika. A competitive gymnast who is overall ranked 7th in state competitions, Erika is a huge Texas A&M fan who wants to be a veterinarian. Erika has also shown horses in international events in Lexington, Kentucky where she won her event. She’s currently the youngest, under the age of 18, to win a grand championship.

“Erika is following in her dad’s footsteps with her love of horses,” said Breckon. “Both Karl and Erika are amateur horse handlers who are well known in the industry.”

In addition to her already full life, Breckon is the caregiver for her father who lives with them, and she was also the caregiver for her father-in-law who recently passed away. “I live life passionately and to the fullest,” said Breckon. “I believe that one of the ways you will fi nd true happiness is when you are serving people.”

Coming from a woman who has literally been around the world, those are, indeed, true – and inspirational – words to live by.

Whether at home, work or play everyone faces the challenge of navigating change and over-

coming setbacks. Life is not without daily trials and tribulations and yet, everyone has the capacity to make the best of most situ-ations and enjoy increased effectiveness and personal happiness in the process. This is where attitude becomes a critical factor. If you struggle to keep your mental posture up-right, perhaps you need to HALT and read-just your attitude.

A popular acronym in addiction recovery, HALT suggests pausing long enough to ask yourself if you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. If you are any or all of these things, your attitude is at risk of being negatively im-pacted and you may find yourself becoming increasingly hostile, impatient, irritable or unfriendly, none of which are useful in effec-tively managing life’s challenges.

Your Attitude MightNeed an Adjustment

HA

LT!

When in HALT, take a moment to assess and tend to your personal situation. If you are hungry, take time out to prepare or purchase a quick and healthy snack. If you are angry, temporarily walk away from your stressful or difficult situation in order breath, count to ten, relax and regroup. If you are tired, briefly withdraw for a quick nap or quiet time and rejuvenate from your hectic schedule. If you are lonely and feeling isolated, lift your spirits by making plans to visit a neighbor or friend.

Zig Ziglar once said, “Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will,” and recent research has suc-cessfully linked positive emotions, including a positive attitude, to overall improved health, outlook, and relationships. In other words, HALT and tend to your critical needs, and you will be better able to adjust your attitude, rise above life’s adversities and prevail with a deeper peace and satisfaction.

For most families the holidays mean gift buying, baking holiday treats and trimming the tree. But for some, it means more trips to the hospital, more treatments and more doctor’s visits. The gift of time can’t be bought but it can be provided by a loving family and a wonderful care team.

The perfect holiday gift?

The gift of comfort, the gift of enjoying family and the gift of making

memories.

Special gifts during the holidays

www.silveradohospice.com

For an experienced hospice team you can trust, call us today!

D uring this holiday season, there’s no greater gift for your loved ones in need than the gift of

hospice. This gift – and philosophy – of care has been designed to help patients and their families at the end of life, and no one provides the gift of hospice better than Sil-verado Hospice does. Ranked in the top 10% of hospices in the United States by their patients and families, they are proud to serve the residents of Fort Bend County.

Hospice staff understands that the holidays can be par-ticularly stressful for patients and their families as they face the challenges of a life-limiting condi-tion. “Created as a compassionate life-line for patients and families on an end of life journey, hospice brings comfort, guid-ance and support,”

says Tonja Moon, Director of Commu-nity Relations. “I believe one of our pa-tient’s daughters illustrated the hospice experience best.” “Silverado Hospice made it possible for my family to share the holidays with dad, at home – creating good memories that will last a lifetime.”

Because everyone is so different in their life experiences, values, and cultural nuances, Silverado Hospice’s approach to care is on helping patients meet their own goals at end of life. Hospice team mem-bers spend time getting to know the pa-tient and family. Then, attention is given to defi ning their expectations. Lastly, a joint plan is developed to help them meet their end of life goals. For some, it may be ensuring that pain is well managed. For others, they may focus on completing their ‘bucket list.’ And for many, it is just living out their fi nal days surrounded by those they love.

Giving the gift of hospice during the holidays can seem awkward, but studies show that the support and guidance pro-

vided by the hospice team is worth the effort. “Knowing that someone is just a phone call away 24 hours a day gives re-assurance to all,” says Dale Metzger, RN, Director of Patient Care Services. “One family told us, ‘We were surprised when we saw mom over Thanksgiving. She’d lost so much weight and seemed so frail. A friend suggested that we call hospice for help, and after some initial hesitation, we called and immediately received the high-est quality of care for mom. We were sur-prised and pleased to learn that there were experts available to help mom, and that Medicare covered all of it. Hospice was a wonderful holiday gift for mom and for our entire family.’”

The qualifi ed team of Registered Nurs-es, Hospice Aides, Spiritual Counselors, Social Workers, Volunteers and Physicians all focus on the quality of life. “Using their

unique skill sets, they ensure that patient’s physical as well as psychosocial and spiri-tual needs are met,” says Tonja Moon.

In addition to providing care for those with terminal illnesses, the staff of Silverado Hospice is uniquely qualifi ed to care for pa-tients with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairing illnesses.

Silverado Hospice is dedicated to the belief that no one who has a life-limiting illness should die alone, afraid, or in pain. Silverado Hospice provides peace, com-fort and caring to terminally ill people and their families by treating the person, not the disease. At Silverado Hospice, hospice is about living all of life to its fullest.

For more information about Silverado Hospice, call 261-565-2900, 866-716-2486 or visit www.silveradohospice.com. Their Sugar Land offi ce is located at 2205 Williams Trace Blvd, Suite 101.

and pulling down a pretty comforter to uncover old, worn out Little Mer-maid sheets. I tend to stay neutral in the guest room with crisp, white sheets with a thread count no less than 300. A s the holiday season rapidly approaches, most likely, friends and

family are making plans to visit, and now is the time to prepare your guest room.

The first thing on my list for a tidy, inviting guest room is matching or at least coordinating sheets. Noth-ing is worse than visiting someone

So this holiday, as friends and family are coming home, take this opportunity to clean out the guest room, and get creative with your table - not the turkey! Your guests will be talking about their stay for quite some time.

If you have a beautiful dining room table, don’t cover it up with a table cloth!

Maneuver tulle throughout the length of the table to give it softness.

Your average hay or moss can make an easy, affordable base for your fall centerpiece.

All kinds of squash are a must! Make sure you cover them in floor wax and let them dry before you place them on the table. This really brings out their beauty.

Tired of squash? Try colorful dried beans or candy as both can really be eye-catching.

Dining RoomFor me, the holiday table has less to do with the food and more about the

drama of a gorgeous tabletop. When walking up to the dining room table, it’s easy to create a “wow” factor with very little money. You do not need fine china to make a beautiful setting – simply color coordinate what you have, and dress it up with some of these suggestions:

Incorporate dried leaves and twigs from the back yard.

Don’t forget the napkins! This is a chance to try new ideas. Tie a sprig of white lavender or other type of herb to the outside of the napkin for decoration. Holly and mistletoe are fun at Christmas. Use an assortment of candles.

Use colorful ribbon on the backs of your chairs. You can also use the ribbon to hold place cards.

If your table just isn’t that great, find a sheer table cloth and place fall leaves under it.

Bedroom Prepare a 3” x 5” index card with your address, phone and cell numbers that guests can keep with them.

Place local magazines in their roomthat cover nearby activities or attractions such as absolutely! Memorial – of course!

Make sure your guest room has a good reading lamp.

Place bottles of water in your guest room for easy, direct access.

Always keep a box of tissues handy.

Place a wastebasket in your guest roomor bathroom.

Night-lights are a must to help guests navigate unfamiliar areas at night.

If you would like your guests to feel extra special, here are a few tips to make their stay both comfortable and memorable.

Place a small basket of essential toiletries they might have forgotten in the bathroom.

Provide extra blankets and pillows that are easily accessible.

Place an alarm clock or clock radio on the bedside table.

Add some books that you have read and are happy to have visitors take home.

A folding luggage rack is helpful so a suitcase can rest somewhere other than on the bed or floor.

Bring the outdoors in with a vase of fresh flowers.

Spritz the bed sheets with a lightly scented linen spray.

S imply put, Albert Nobbs (Glenn Close) is defi nitely what you might expect. Nineteenth century Ireland

was unbelievably unkind. Aside from the multitude of poverty and the large gaps between the classes of haves and have nots, there never seemed to be enough of anything for the masses. Folks were essentially forced to do the unconven-tional in order to survive.

This brings us to Albert. He is a shy butler in Dublin’s most luxurious hotel that represents the bastion of where the elite and high society stay while in town. Albert is well thought of and appreci-ated for his quiet and unassuming man-ner of doing his job. He never brought any attention to himself and with good reason. Albert is really a woman. Ireland was very conservative, and jobs were diffi cult to come by, especially if you were a woman. Over the course of 20 years, Albert spent her life masquerad-ing as a man in order to make a living - or literally starving to death. Albert’s ruse works on every level for decades, that is, until a painter who catches her eye enters the picture and the thought of showing her true identity comes to the forefront.

Albert attempts to befriend Helen (Mia Wasikowska), one of the hotel maids, who herself is having some dif-fi culties in her love life. Through the use of a slight streak of feministic courage,

Albert Nobbs serves up the true and unadulterated story of a very coura-geous woman who will stop at nothing to achieve true happiness.

I can’t really recall the last time Glenn Close had a role with such substance and promise. Maybe it was back in the days of her boiling a rabbit all the while seeking the affections of Michael Douglas in Fatal Attraction. The fi lm makers are truly quite lucky they found an actress with the endearing qualities and subtleties of Glenn Close to portray the role as Albert. It would be easy to envision some heavy handed and boisterous performance by a multitude of other actresses simply destroying the part and the fi lm, yet the selection of Close puts the performance over the top. Close’s screen chemistry with Mia Wasikowska (generally known as the new Alice from Wonderland) is unquestionable. Of particular note are the performances of both Janet McTeer as Hubert and Brendan Gleeson as Holloran. Both interject a slight undercurrent of humor in the fi lm, just enough to provide a wry smile from time to time. The fi lm’s director, Rodrigo Garcia, has done a brilliant job painting the picture of the sorrow and disdain of the situation, yet provides the perfect canvas on which to free the heart, mind and soul.

Albert Nobbs is not for everyone. The fi lm is bleak and paints a heavy pic-ture. Yet, those who watch the fi lm with an open mind will come away with a true appreciation for where you live and who you are, indeed.

Tip: Use Morrocan Oil Hair Spray to add a light hold and a lustrous fi nish. And, to secure all of your up-dos, fi nish them off using the Bumble and bumble’s nifty little pin tins to add a little wink to any hairstyle.

Go Straight! The new Straight line by Bumble and bumble creates soft, shiny – and straight – hair. This line will help tame your locks with a weightless fi nish allowing bounce and movement in the hair. For a fun and whimsical look this holiday season, go straight!

Tip: Use the Bb Straight shampoo and conditioner, then prep the hair using a penny size dollop of Straight cream.

It’s All About the DramaA dramatic eye shadow technique will bring the sparkle to your holiday ho-hums! To achieve such an intense tone of color, line the entire eye with pencil in a coordinating color. Start with a cream shadow on a wet brush and layer powder shadow on top. The three layers create an intense, deep color giving you a very strong eye without it being dark and smoky.

Tip: If you want to translate a trendy look like the Panda eye for every day looks, utilize the same layering techniques with the eye shadow, but keep the shadow closer to the lash line.

The chignon is one of my fashion inspirations for this season’s holiday hair. The word chignon comes from the French phrase “chignon du cou” which means nape of the neck. Chignons are generally achieved by pinning the hair into a knot at the nape or back of the head, but there are many variations of the style. So whether you are dressing up or dressing down, try a chignon on for style.

inspiring women I By Tanya Sterling

Why a Traffic Stop Made MeHappy

I was in a “woe is me” mood the other day. In other words, I was not having a good day - too many responsibilities

and changes to deal with plus having to interact with a difficult personality or two. I felt weighted down by everyday life, and then, felt guilty for feeling burdened when I fully know how blessed and beautiful it is to live my life. Of course, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!

That’s an interesting feeling – to feel stressed out over the very life you have created and enjoy living. Have you ever felt these emotions? Thus, I was on auto-pilot as I got kids off to school and started the business of my day. I wondered why life was so routine? I wondered if I was on track to fulfill all my tasks, duties and projects for the week? I wondered if I needed to email this friend (I never responded to her previous email a few weeks ago)? And, if I needed to, indeed, call that friend or could I get away with sending her a quick text? I even wondered about the hustle and bustle of the Christmas holidays. Everything just felt so...heavy, and I felt as if my mind was filled with great big sighs.

I feel as if I am putting myself “out there” as I pen this article, but I suspect a

lot of you can relate to how I was recently feeling. Have you ever just felt busy but not always productive? Have you felt as if you are living for everyone else, but you are lost somewhere in your “crowded”

life? That’s how I was feeling, y’all! (And it’s so not true!)

Anyway, as I was driving home from running errands that particular afternoon, I got stopped by a constable for making a rolling stop. As I pulled over, I heavily sighed thinking, “This is exactly how my

day is going.” This officer, however, was so nice and cheerful that I smiled

at him in return and apologized for making a rolling stop. He pleasantly gave me a warning (hallelujah!) ticket and sent me on my way. As I (slowly) drove off, my heart felt lighter, and I was just a-smiling! In the midst of my “pity party,” I got a “pass,” or as I define it, a random dose of kindness when I really needed it, and I literally laughed out loud!

As I drove, I turned up the music and started singing to some good ole 80’s tunes – I know – I am dating myself. I also wondered why I was so happy AFTER being stopped by a policeman. How ironic it is that I would be happier after being pulled over than BEFORE I was pulled over! I also got to thinking that I was over-thinking, over-stressing and piling on these so-called burdens onto my own shoulders. We all make choices, and wonderful, bountiful, long-term goals are not accomplished overnight. No pain, no gain.

If you can relate to this article at all, always know that life, circumstances and even those mundane daily routines get better and go by faster as long as we have the right outlook. Don’t let the drudgery of life keep you down – count your blessings. Remember, if you think you have problems, someone else has bigger problems and will have to jump through bigger hoops than you ever will. Be happy with yourself and your life - it’s all about perspective, baby!

Wine Snob or Wine Wonderer?

Mudpie’s Wine Belts

Black Tie Decanter by ReidelPhoto from glassware.riedel.com

Knobstoppers

Oh, how the holiday entertaining and gift-giving season has

begun, and with that comes, inevitably, the questions of what to give and what to serve.

But how do you decide what wines to give? Yes, many bottles of wine are sold on a clever label, but I have some ideas to help you make it past the label and make some excellent choices on the wine itself.

First, consider half-bottles. By giving two or three half-bottles instead of one full-sized bottle, you are giving your hostess the gift of choice. She can arrange for a smaller wine tasting at her leisure, and taste through to fi nd a new favorite. This also solves the red or white or Merlot or Malbec questions.

Picking the perfect winegifts for the holidays

Buy your gift wines by the case at Max’s Wine Dive or The Tasting Room where the wait staff will help you make good choices and allow you to taste wines you are considering buying. While you are there, grab a bite to eat, relax with your own glass of wine, and pick up a case for yourself. Now, that’s holiday shopping!

Ask questions! Buy your wine at a store where you feel comfortable asking questions, and then, ask away! Tell your wine seller what types of food the gift-receiver likes to eat or any wines you already know he or she may enjoy. Then, listen and ask even more questions to fi nd the best choices.

Still want to go with a full bottle and don’t know what to give?

Here are a few of my favorites:• 2007 Pomum Shya Red Blend from

the Yakima Valley in Washington.Cost: About $35 at Spec’s.

• 2008 Alexander’s Crown Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon fromRodney Strong.Cost: About $65 at Spec’s.

• Italian bubbles. There are many options for Prosecco, Italy’s answer to Champagne. Prosecco has a lighter, crisper taste than Champagne and also often costs less.

Here are a few wine accessories I’ve spotted about town that would make great gifts!

A brightly-colored, festive set of wine belts your hostess can put to use right away. Similar to wine charms, the easy-to-slip-on belts will identify glasses with labels such as “More Please,” “Wine Diva,” and “Wine Snob.” Mudpie’s wine belts will defi nitely get the conversations going and be used at party after party.

Cost: $8 for a set of 12 at Magpiesor $8.95 on Amazon.

Turn a wine bottle or a few bottles into a gorgeous centerpiece. Magpie’s also features Knobstoppers – bottle stoppers made from door knobs and intricately designed metal fl owers turned into candle holders.

Cost: $35 at Magpie’s.For the luxurious wine snob on

your list, consider the Black Tie or Eve decanters by Reidel.

Cost: $495 at Events.

12 A s we prepare to wrap up another

year, we can’t help but think about all of the things that

we would like to accomplish in 2012. January presents itself as an ideal opportu-nity to start fresh. I always find that it is the time of year that I adopt the old adage, “Out with the old and in with the new.” It is a time for purging the unnecessary excess in our lives. For some people, that excess is the stuff that clutters their homes. For others, the excess is the stuff that “clutters” their bodies. The stuff that does not allow them to be the people that they want to be, move the way they want to move, do the things they want to do. The stuff that is literally robbing them of their lives.

It never fails. January 1st is the un-official “Diet Day” of the year. The day when all of the resolutions begin, fitness clubs increase enrollment and diet foods fly off the shelves. Only 25% of these resolutions survive past the first week of the New Year. I don’t think that this happens because people want to give up

or that they are lazy. I think this most oftentimes happens because they don’t have well-defined goals for the year. It’s kind of like setting out on a trip to New York without a map, GPS or even a com-pass. If you don’t plan out how to get there and utilize tools available to you, it is unlikely that you will reach your desti-nation (at least not without wrong turns along the way).

To increase the likelihood of reach-ing goals (a.k.a. your destination), I use the phrase “Always set SMART goals.” SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed. I often see clients write down “Lose weight” or “Get healthier” as goals. The problem with these goals is that they are not specific. How much weight? What does healthier mean? The goal of “get healthier” is also not a measureable goal. Healthy means something different to every person. How do we quantify it? The biggest mistake that I see made with goal setting is that the person does not set achievable or realistic goals. They focus S

more on the end result instead of the actions that will get them there. Walking 45 minutes a day would not be an achiev-able or realistic goal for someone needing both of their knees replaced. Neither is setting a goal of working out 2 hours a day… every day. While that might be achievable, it certainly is not realistic for the majority of people. The last compo-nent of setting SMART goals is making sure that they are timed. If your boss came in and handed you a project to be com-pleted, he would probably not just tell you to get it done whenever, but rather give you a deadline for its completion. This would insure that you would focus your efforts on the task, and get it done in a timely manner. When you put all of these components together, goals become more manageable and attainable.

Lastly, focus on what you can do, not what you can’t. If walking is not an option for you because you have severe knee or foot pain (and you don’t have access to a pool), then utilize the other half of your body and work your arms, shoulders, back and abs. It is amazing what you can do to get your heart rate up even if you are only using your upper body. For instance, you can sit in a chair with a straight back and move your arms like you are jumping rope. Do it as fast and as controlled as possible. Hello, heart!

This year, I have challenged 20 partici-pants to battle the bulge during the holi-days. They each signed up for a 30-day fi tness challenge which involves using a Beachbody® program, Shakeology®, meal planning tools and accountability. They each set SMART goals, and I have been witness to them achieving their goals in a very methodical and planned man-ner. And this is all happening over the holidays! Imagine what 2012 will hold for them!

You can put yourself to the challenge, too. Decide that you are worth it! Believe that you can do it! Now, get out that pen and paper, and set your goals for 2012!

By Kimberly Cress, M.D. I health & wellness

I t’s that time again when we all start to think about how and what to change about ourselves so we’ll be what we’ve

always dreamed we could be. We think, “I need to lose weight, I need to eat healthier, spend more time with my fam-ily, be more productive at work, be more organized.” You can think of plenty more I’m sure. I’m not saying these resolutions are bad; some of us probably really need to do some of these things. The problem, I think, with those resolutions is that they prevent us from looking inside ourselves. However, if you want to really have a great year, forget about you! That’s right. Try focusing instead on something or some-one totally different! Rather than trying to become the perfect you, think outside yourself. Let’s face it, if you could be that perfect you, wouldn’t you have done it already?

So, it’s a New Year, and you want to improve your life? That’s commendable. But, what if this year you did that in a different way? What if you improved your life this year by helping others? Focus on people you don’t know, or even ones you do know who can benefi t from your expertise, your time, your passion, your listening, and yes, maybe even a little of your money. Think how good you’ll feel about yourself after spending time with a

Make the New Year Your Best Year Ever

friend who’s going through a tough time. Consider the lift you’ll feel bringing a meal to a sick friend or family dealing with a medical illness. Go through your closets (you know that’s been on your list for a long time anyway) and donate clothes, toys, and books to your church, school or local women’s shelter. Visit a children’s hospital or nursing home, and spread some cheer. Take a game to play with them or just sit and listen to their stories. Offer rides to people going for chemo or dialysis. Join Relay for the Cure in your area, and walk to raise money for breast cancer. These are just a few ideas. There are a lot of things you can do!

I know we’re all busy, and who has time to help others when you’re barely getting by yourself and have no time for yourself? If you make giving a priority, you can fi nd some time. It doesn’t have to take over your life. No one is saying you have to become the chairperson of a big charity event. Just give a little of yourself and see how much happier and fuller you feel about your life. What have you got to lose? Some people will undoubtedly benefi t from your generosity, and you benefi t from an increase in self-esteem. If helping someone doesn’t make you feel anything positive, you can always go back to the way things were. You can go back to focusing on you and how you need to eat better, exercise more, spend more time with your children, and on and on. Before you do that, realize this is something in which you can also involve your children, and teach them about the power of giving. Let them feel good, too. They deserve it. We all do!

So, instead of making the same dull resolutions most of us never fulfi ll any-way, just open up your heart, have a little creativity, spend a little time, and change someone else’s life this year. Give freely and wholly, and you’ll be amazed at how it will change your life. I’ve heard it said that the happiest people don’t have the best of everything; they simply make the most of everything. Let us all remember that this year, and make 2012 the best year ever!

What if you improved

your life this year by

helping others?

Woman Woman

P eople often ask me how in the world I get all of it done. It seems to me that they are maybe worried

they themselves aren’t getting enough done. I can’t say exactly what it is that al-lows me to throw several irons in the fire, but I can tell you that not doing so will make me crazy.

Most people have many talents and tapping into them is often not so easy. For the lucky few who have been able to do so, they stand out from the crowd a bit, and make the rest of us stop and wonder, “What am I doing wrong?”

Maybe it’s in the moving? People such as Steve Jobs and Andy Rooney were al-ways busy. Creating, writing, thinking ... each minute was used wisely and for a cause. I love that about them. Their souls were so intertwined with their purpose that even in their last days here they kept on until they were done.

Getting going is the best advice I can give you. Just keep moving ... ya know it’s not easy, but in order to figure it all out, you do have to start somewhere. I re-

member writing down somewhere that I wanted to be famous. Several years later, I began painting and said openly that I was an artist. I had defined myself as such by the mere virtue that I could paint. Still more years ... I became a mother, and in those first few months of overwhelming feelings of protection and searching to define a love I had never known, yes ... I found that I had again defined myself as a mother. Searching yet still, I discovered a camera, and then writing, and yes, I am them all. These talents have been revealed to me in many ways, but the ability to jug-gle them all at the same time is not always so easy. One talent pulls at you to rede-fine itself and in the allowing of that to happen, wonderful things emerge. Won-derful things that change the world some-times like the creation of the iPad and the iPhone. Wonderful things like making a difference by voicing your opinion .... liked or not. Wonderful things.

I’ll bet if you had the chance to ask them – talking about Steve and Andy again – if they had any hobbies or such, they did not. Nor do I. One of the last things that Andy said in his interview a few weeks ago rang so closely to my soul that when he said it, I cried, and I am cry-ing now as I type it. “I love what I do, and I wish I could do it forever!” That, my friends, is the key.

I’ve decided that heaven has to be some really awesome place where you get to do exactly what God placed in your soul to accomplish. The soul doesn’t have to stop creating – just the body that gave out has to go. I sure hope so anyway.

Take Care of you!

The best advice when it comes to anything is stick with the classics; they will never go out of style. This

philosophy has worked well for David and Sylvain Denis, brothers and co-owners of Le Mistral, the award-winning French restaurant in West Houston. A recent gathering to cele-brate the restaurant’s milestone 10th anniver-sary drew an adoring crowd that relished their favorite classical French dishes while paying homage to their congenial hosts.

Executive Chef David Denis describes his menus as uniquely French and uniquely Houston because he likes to incorporate fresh, locally available ingredients while adhering to a classically French preparation. By making everything from scratch, as he learned grow-ing up helping in his mother and grand-mother’s restaurants in France and later after receiving professional training in culinary school, he has never strayed from utilizing his ingredients to the fullest and keeping healthy dishes at the forefront of his kitchen. After becoming the first local chef to receive the prestigious Waterford Crystal Chef of Chefs award at Wine and Food Week’s Wine Ren-dezvous Grand Tasting and Showcase and the

first chef to win two years in-a-row, plus being honored as the best food in Houston by Za-gat in 2010, as well as numerous other awards and recognitions, he has earned the right to take a little break. But for Chef Denis, Le Mistral is where his heart is. So much so, that he has added Foody’s Gourmet next door to Le Mistral, to offer many of the restaurant’s signature items, such as breads, pastries, ol-ive oils, sauces, dressings, imported cheeses and of course, wines to pair with any meal. In addition, cooking and wine classes will be offered to share some of Le Mistral’s coveted recipes and cooking methods.

As most restaurateurs know, success such as what Le Mistral has enjoyed comes with having all the elements in place to give diners a reason to keep coming back. Since mov-ing from their original location, a cozy and quaint single dining room, to a spacious new building, Le Mistral offers a variety of din-ing options to suit any occasion. Upscale, but never stuffy, the beautiful bar, private wine cellar dining area that seats 10 and a chef ’s table in the kitchen that seats 12, as well as a banquet room for parties and busi-ness events, have made Le Mistral a popular

choice for diners in the neighborhood and from the Houston area. Sylvain Denis, gen-eral manager and co-owner, presided over the design of the building using his experi-ence as an architect and project manager in France and his extensive training as a Som-melier to build an extensive French wine col-lection, one of highest rated in Houston and recognized by Wine Spectator magazine with Awards of Excellence in 2009 and 2010.

Signature items from the menu include Salad Mistral with Blueberry Balsamic Vinaigrette, Escargots, Seared Foie Gras, Veal and Spinach Ravioli, Rack of Lamb and Osso Bucco. The lunch menu has a good mix of appetizers, soups, salads, fish, meat dishes and sandwiches and offers an express and business lunch. Sandwiches are served with a small Mistral salad or homemade French fries. Crème Brulee, Chocolate Fondant, Crepes, Tarte Tatin, and homemade ice cream and sorbets are a wonderful finish to any lunch or din-ner at Le Mistral. The brunch menu fea-tures delicious drinks and specialty cof-fees and breakfast favorites such as ham and Gruyere cheese crepes with béchamel sauce, homemade buttermilk pecan pan-cakes and Le Mistral Eggs Florentine plus a complete offering of soups, salads, ap-petizers, main dishes and desserts.

For David and Sylvain, the plan for the next 10 years is to keep working hard to share their love of food and hospitality at Le Mistral and to help teach another gen-eration the fine art of French cuisine.

Gestational Diabetes What Expectant Mothers Should Know

G estational diabetes, or diabetes occurring during pregnancy, affects approximately 5% of

pregnant women in the United States. While the condition can cause health complications for both mother and child, with careful management, women with gestational diabetes may still have both a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

What Is Gestational Diabetes?“Like other forms of diabetes, gesta-

tional diabetes affects the way the body uses blood glucose, or blood sugar,” says Rachna Bhala, M.D., board certified OB/GYN, on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “During normal digestion, car-bohydrates are broken down into glucose and enter the bloodstream. Insulin, a hor-mone produced in your pancreas, helps move the glucose from the blood stream into your body’s cells, where it is used as the main source of energy. With gesta-tional diabetes, insulin action is impaired, so glucose remains in the blood causing high blood sugar.”

What Are the Health Risks?“Undetected and uncontrolled, gesta-

tional diabetes can affect the health of both mother and baby,” says Margaret Condit, M.D., board certified OB/GYN, on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

Dr. Condit cautions that in expectant mothers, gestational diabetes may cause:

• Frequent urinary tract infections.• The unborn baby may grow too

large and require a Cesarean section for safe delivery.

• Increased risk of developing preeclampsia, a potentially life-threatening condition that affects pregnant women.

Babies born to women with gestational diabetes may develop:

• Low blood sugar.• Respiratory distress syndrome, a

condition which makes breathing difficult.

• Jaundice, the yellowish discolorationof skin and the whites of the eyes.

• Low mineral levels in the blood.“Fortunately, most of the conditions

that may affect the baby are treatable and mothers usually see a return to nor-mal blood sugar levels shortly after giving birth,” Dr. Bhala says. However, women with gestational diabetes have a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. In addition, children born to these women have a higher risk of diabetes and obesity.

What Can You Do?Your best defense against gestational

diabetes is a healthy diet, regular exercise and routine prenatal visits with your ob-stetrician. Because most women don’t ex-perience symptoms when they develop the condition, obstetricians routinely test for gestational diabetes around the 28th week of pregnancy. “If it is determined that you have the condition, we will recommend frequent check-ups, regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, a healthy diet and exercise,” Dr. Condit says. “With proper treatment, you can still enjoy a healthy pregnancy and give your baby a good start in life.”

Are You At Risk?

While researchers are unsure of the exact reasons some women develop gestational diabetes, they have identi-fied factors that may make some ex-pectant mothers more susceptible to the condition.

• Being older than age 25.• Being overweight.• Having a personal history of

prediabetes, a precursor to type 2diabetes, or a family history of type2 diabetes.

• Having had gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy.

• Having previously delivered a babyweighing more than 9 pounds.

• Being of African American, Hispanic, American Indian or Asian heritage.

About the Author

Dr. Shelena Lalji, known as “Dr. Shel,” is the founder and medical di-rector of Dr. Shel Wellness and Medi-cal Spa in Sugar Land, Texas. For over fourteen years, she has been inspiring and educating people on how to live their best lives possible by giving them the tools to create balance and harmo-ny in their lives through her integrative medical approach.

After practicing traditional wom-en’s healthcare for over ten years as a Board Certified Obstetrician and Gy-necologist, Dr. Shel felt the need to focus on a comprehensive approach to women’s health focusing on the bal-ance between mind, body and spirit. This journey inspired Dr. Shel to create a supportive and serene environment in which she provides the highest level of care for her patients. Her mission is to help her patients by empowering them to cherish and honor themselves so they can live their lives to the fullest. She assists her patients in this process by guiding them through a journey with natural, bio-identical hormones, nutritional balancing, allergy treat-ments, state-of-the-art aesthetic treat-ments, and a healthy life balance.

Dr. Shel is a well-known keynote speaker, a medical expert, and a knowl-edgeable trainer for fellow integrative practitioners. She believes in and lives by a deep-seated balance in her own life while she fulfills and enjoys her many roles as a physician, women’s health advocate, strong supporter of her com-munity, wife, and mother of two beau-tiful children.

Are you ready to feel like yourself again? Do you feel frustrated with the medical care and diagnoses you have received thus far from tradition-al doctors? Do you feel like you are not treated like the unique individual

that you are, rather like one of thousands of women experiencing aging symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, depression, insomnia, low libido and much more that you have to just accept and live with? Are you ready to change all that? Are you ready to embrace your life, your health, and your inner powerful woman? If so, this book will speak to your mind and your heart.

I Am Woman was fostered and created by Dr. Shelena Lalji after practicing OB/GYN in a traditional setting for over a decade. As she became more focused on the preventive and integrative aspect of medicine, her inspiration to heal pa-tients became boundless and her life’s mission. “Dr. Shel,” as her patients lovingly call her, considers herself fortunate to be in a place where she can help women achieve true mind, body and spirit balance in their daily lives through her writing, speaking and practice.

Dr. Shel’s patients are a living testimony to the benefits of her natural, holistic and comprehensive approach to treating women. In I Am Woman, several pa-tients who inspired Dr. Shel to continue her endless efforts to heal, have also shared their experiences for other women, like themselves, in hopes to help them regain control of their own lives. These are the stories that will inspire your journey to health, happiness and harmony.

To order I Am Woman, go to www.drshel.com.

In I Am Woman, Dr. Shelena Lalji in-vites women to take a comprehensive look at their overall health and well-being. Dr. Shel explores – and encourages – her fel-low women to do five important things on their journey to health, happiness and harmony:

1. Get help. If you are not feeling like yourself, find a board-certified

physician who understands the “whole pa-tient” and who can treat you holistically.

2. Become your own advocate. If something does not feel right, don’t

give up on finding a treatment protocol that works for you.

3. Get educated. Spend time under-standing the profound links be-

tween your body, mind, and spirit. The ultimate goal is to feel aligned in these three areas for optimal health and well-being.

4. Share information. Tell your story about overcoming your health is-

sues through becoming hormonally and nutritionally balanced to others. Encour-age your sisters, mothers, friends, and aunts to look beyond traditional medicine in addressing health concerns.

5. Celebrate your life. Once your body is in balance, enjoy your life.

Live it to its fullest, and be a role model of health, harmony and happiness to other women in your life.

Enhanced lighting will create an ambiance invoking the candle-lit style of Handel’s 1700s. December 16 & 17, 8 pmDecember 18, 2:30 pmJones Hallwww.houstonsymphony.org

64 focus on women l December 2011 / January 2012

Andy Rooney says:As I grow in age, I value women who

are over forty most of all. Here are just a few reasons why: A woman over forty will never wake you in the middle of the night to ask, “What are you thinking?” She doesn’t care what you think.

If a woman over forty doesn’t want to watch the game, she doesn’t sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do. And, it’s usually something more interesting.

A woman over forty knows herself well enough to be assured in who she is, what she is, what she wants and from whom. Few women past the age of forty give a hoot what you might think about her or what she’s doing.

Women over forty are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expen-sive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won’t hesitate to shoot you, if they think they can get away with it.

Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it’s like to be unappreciated.

A woman over forty has the self-as-surance to introduce you to her women friends. A younger woman with a man will often ignore even her best friend because she doesn’t trust the guy with other wom-en. Women over forty couldn’t care less if you’re attracted to her friends because she knows her friends won’t betray her.

Andy Rooney onWomen Over Forty

the last word

Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a wom-an over forty. They always know.

A woman over forty looks good wear-ing bright red lipstick. This is not true of younger women. Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over forty is far sexier than her younger counterpart.

Older women are forthright and hon-est. They’ll tell you right off if you are a jerk, if you are acting like one! You don’t ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over forty for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it’s not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed hot woman of forty-plus, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some twenty-two-year-old waitress.

Ladies, I apologize. For all those men who say, “Why buy

the cow when you can get the milk for free,” here’s an update for you. Now 80 percent of women are against marriage, why? Because women realize it’s not worth buying an entire pig, just to get a little sau-sage.

A woman over forty looks good wearing bright red lipstick. This is not true of

younger women. Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a

woman over forty is far sexier than her younger counterpart.
