GRACE’S GREETINGS

“...to provide programs and activities to enhance the quality of life and promote independent living for area

adults 55 years of age and older.”

GRACE MARTIN HARWELL

SENIOR CENTER PARTNERS, INC.

As you well know, the Grace Martin Harwell Senior Center (GMHSC)

has been closed for business since Friday, March 13th (how fitting?!)

due to the COVID-19 Virus outbreak. We have missed every single

one of our members, and know you’ve missed us as well. We will

eventually reopen - sadly, just not right now, Once we do, there will be

limitations that will hopefully keep our members and staff safe and

healthy as we continue to fight to reduce and eliminate the COVID-19

virus.

We will be doing our due diligence in cleaning and sanitizing items such

as door knobs, bathrooms, and flat surfaces that are used on a daily

basis. This will help all of us maintain our health and your comfort

when you visit the GMHSC.

Enclosed in this newsletter will be numerous “articles” on our new

limitations/restrictions that will be in place for our rooms or activities

for the foreseeable future. Once we reopen, we will be following

these new “rules” so we can continue to operate with our doors open

to the community, and be a comfortable place to read, exercise,

socialize, and assist senior citizens age 55+ in the City of Washington,

NC and greater Beaufort County areas.

So….hello again to everyone! If you have any questions or concerns,

you are welcome to call me anytime.

RULES—SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

2 | Senior Center | 2

To keep everyone happy, safe, and healthy, FACE MASKS ARE REQUIRED TO BE

WORN when inside the GMHSC at all times. We kindly ask that you:

Keep it on at all times, regardless of personal distance from others*

You MUST wear it over your nose, mouth, and under your chin

If you do not have a mask, we will give you a mask to wear.

If you choose not to wear a mask or wear it improperly, you will be warned one

time; 2nd time—you will be asked to leave the building.

Please respect other members and kindly wear your mask—it’s for ALL OF US!

* If you are unable to wear a mask due to medical reasons, please let us know.

Hand sanitizer can be found in the following locations through-

out the GMHSC building. Please use it BEFORE and AFTER

your visit to the center to reduce the transmission of germs!!

Main Lobby - Fitness Room

Media Room - Activity Room (2)

Billiards Room - Upstairs Lobby

Computer Room - Upstairs Classroom

We’d like to welcome our new Recreation

Program Specialist Brandi Hardison! Brandi is a

Washington native and a recent graduate of East

Carolina University (GO PIRATES!!!) where she

majored in Recreational Therapy with a focus on

geriatrics. Brandi grew up playing softball at the

Susiegray Mconnell Sports complex and

basketball at the Bobby Andrews Recreation

Center. She loves doing anything outdoors that

keeps her active such as: kayaking and walking

her dog along the waterfront. We are excited to

have Brandi join our team!

CARES GRANT - KEEPING YOU SAFE

As part of our ongoing commitment to quality service and programming for the members of the Grace

Martin Harwell Senior Center, we were able to secure a substantial monetary grant through the Mid-

East Area Agency on Aging and the CARES Act. This has allowed the GMHSC to purchase needed

equipment and supplies to assist us with cleaning and sanitization of the entire GMHSC facility.

With the use of multiple hand sanitizer stations, infrared temperature scanners, a portable disinfectant

atomizer (like is used in restaurants and multiple public spaces), and sanitizer wipes, we are confident

we can keep our center as germ-free at possible. The funds secured will also allow us to replenish

supplies throughout the coming months. But, this is where we need YOUR HELP – we can’t do this

without your due-diligence. Please follow these simple procedures: take your temperature when

entering the building, use hand sanitizer liberally and continually, wear a mask properly, and

stay 6ft apart from other members. We appreciate you following the rules.

PARKING LOT BINGO!!!

4 | Senior Center | 4

Grace Martin Harwell Senior Center hosted its first parking lot BINGO on

October 9th 2020. We had a total of 24 participants come out for 10 games of

BINGO! It was such a great turnout that we hosted another parking lot

BINGO on October 21st with around 35 participants. Players were allowed to

bring chairs and sit outside of their vehicles and enjoy the nice weather,

abiding by the socials distancing rules. We had multiple winners who received

a tote bag filled with numerous items, ranging from pill boxes and puzzles to

sanitizer kits and soap and so much more. Many of the items in the bag were

donated to us from different agencies that we partner with: Community

Hospice and Home Care, Asera Care Hospice, and Ridgewood

Rehabilitation and living Center. Everyone was excited to get out of their

house for a few hours and bingo in the parking lot—fun was had by all!

GMHSC hosted 2 “drive-thru” flu shot clinics on

October 14th and November 10th. Participants

were able to receive a flu shot (regular OR

senior shot) without even getting out of their

car! O’Neals Drug Store distributed more than

25 flu shots for those in need.

HALLOWEEN PARKING LOT PUMPKIN PARTY

5 | Senior Center | 5

On Friday October 30th, the GMHSC

hosted a drive-thru Halloween giveaway in

the back parking lot. We had over 40

members including grandchildren attend.

There were no tricks just treats as Senior

Center staff spun the prize wheel and

members received prizes such as:

Halloween soap, bags of candy, fresh

popped popcorn, facemasks and other fun

giveaway items. A “senior center” shark

was even spotted dancing in the parking

lot! Did anyone guess who it was??

The Senior Center may be closed but that doesn’t mean we

aren’t providing activities. Since March, we have been doing a

FREE library book borrowing/drop off at our main entrance.

If you have any books you are looking to donate we would be

more than happy to take them. While you’re here, look

through the plastic bins and if your see any books you like, take

a few home with you. You are not required to bring them back,

but if you would like to return them so others may enjoy, you

are free to do so. We have also had a few puzzle giveaways as

well. To stay up to date on the different activities we are doing,

be sure to join our call list or follow us on our Facebook page

at GMHSeniorcenter. Keep reading everyone!

2021 TRAVEL TRIPS AND DAY TRIP EVENTS

SUSPENDED

DUE TO COVID-19

All extended/overnight travel trips for 2021 have been cancelled due to the uncertainty

of the COVID-19 virus. We are not scheduling extended/overnight trips for 2021 at

this time due to the uncertainty with the virus. We hope you understand this decision

was not taken lightly, as the trips have been a staple of our programming here at the

GMHSC for many years. But we want to make sure we ALL stay happy, healthy, and

able to continue to come to the GMHSC.

To our members of the GMHSC of the Jewish faith, have a wonderful Hanukkah!

IT’S THE HOLIDAY SEASON!

On behalf of the Grace Martin Harwell

Senior Center and the City of Washington,

we’d like to wish each one of our members,

friends, and guests a very Merry Christmas

and a Happy New Year. We hope 2021 brings

everyone greater health, wellness, and

prosperity.
