December / Diciembre 2, 2018 First Sunday of Advent | Primer Domingo de Adviento

January is named after the Roman god of doors, Janus, because January is the door to the new year. Janus represents all beginnings and possesses the ability to see all things past and future. And so it is

with the new liturgical season of Advent, which begins this Sunday. During Advent the church looks back to the coming of God in the person of Jesus two thousand years ago, and it looks forward to the second coming of Jesus. The church celebrates this season with much joy remembering the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. The liturgical color is purple which signifies the royal character of Jesus as Messiah and King of Israel. The advent wreath is placed in the middle of the church and four candles are lit one at a time each week. The Nativity set and Christmas trees are beautifully decorated. The spiritual preparation is also highlighted during this time of Advent by consciously and actively participating in the Holy Eucharist each week, celebrating the sacrament of confession (Dec. 4th here in the church), and by sharing our blessings with those who are less fortunate. The Advent tree this year will be to help seniors at the Glisan Center. The names of fifty seniors will be on the tree for you to pick one and bring a small gift. Also, we will be packing and delivering 300 food boxes for the needy on December 21st and 22nd. May your Advent be a time of joy as you remember the birth of Jesus, and a time of anticipation as you prepare for His second coming. Enero lleva el nombre del dios romano de las puertas, Janus, porque Enero es la puerta al nuevo año. Janus representa todos los comienzos y posee la capacidad de ver todas las cosas pasadas y futuras. Y así ocurre con la nueva temporada litúrgica de Adviento, que comienza este Domingo. Durante el Adviento, la iglesia mira hacia atrás a la venida de Dios en la persona de Jesús hace dos mil años, y espera la segunda venida de Jesús. La iglesia celebra esta temporada con mucho gozo recordando el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador Jesucristo. El color litúrgico es púrpura, lo que significa el carácter real de Jesús como el Mesías y el Rey de Israel. La corona de adviento se coloca en el centro de la iglesia y se encienden cuatro velas una a la vez cada semana. El conjunto de la Natividad y los árboles de Navidad están bellamente decorados. Today there is greater acceptance of cremation as an alternative form of burial, an option that allow churches to open their doors to their members for this same sacred sanctuary, giving them a more intimate and spiritually satisfying alternative for interment, in the lasting peace and dignity of their church. A Columbarium is a beautiful bronze vault in which are placed the cremated remains, the ashes, of the faithful. First Sunday of Advent: As we begin Advent we are called to “wait” in joyful anticipation for the grace of Christmas to once again bless our lives. Wherever you live in

our parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box will help the poor celebrate the grace of God’s love this Christmas. Primer Domingo de Adviento: Al iniciar el Adviento, estamos llamados a “esperar” con gozosa anticipación por la gracia de la Navidad para bendecir, una vez más, nuestras vidas.
