52021 Holiday Concerts

Dear Friends,

Season’s Greetings and Happy Holidays! We are delighted to be celebrating this most wonderful time of the year with you, back at Mandel Concert Hall at Severance. As we come together for the first time in two years for the beloved tradition of Cleveland Orchestra Holiday Concerts, we are even more aware of how special these moments with family and friends truly are. We wouldn’t be here without the continued support of our incredible Northeast Ohio community. Thank you.

As we strive to make your holidays a little cheerier and more melodious, these twelve concerts mark an important moment for the entire Cleveland Orchestra family. They are the first time that the Orchestra and our all-volunteer Cleveland Orchestra Chorus — joined by the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus Chamber Ensemble, members of the Blossom Festival Chorus, and our great community guest choruses — will be making music together in 20 months. This is a gift we all cherish and one that would not be possible without the tireless dedication of our musicians, staff, and volunteers.

As you continue your merriments throughout the month, I hope you’ll enjoy our Holiday Delights: Visual Album on our streaming platform, Adella, which features an exceptional playlist of seasonal selections by your Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus, along with a festive video.

I also must extend our heartfelt gratitude to CIBC, the exclusive Presenting Sponsor of The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2021 Holiday Concert series. I wish you and your loved ones a safe and merry holiday season, and I look forward to sharing a New Year filled with exciting possibilities.

Warmly,

André Gremillet

Bustling with activity. That’s how Pat Mallik

and her husband Singh describe the newest

chapter in their lives. After the Malliks

relocated from Seattle in 2018, their son and

daughter-in-law quickly pointed them to

nearby Judson Park. And for Pat and Singh,

there’s been no looking back.

Gardening, reading, staying fit, and

freely sharing her beauty expertise

with neighbors are everyday

occurrences for Pat. “We’re so busy!

Just because we are retired doesn’t

mean we’re going to sit in a chair and

sleep. The exercise options are great,

people are so friendly, and help is

here if you need it,” says Pat.

152021 Holiday Concerts About the Conductor

Brett Mitchell Conductor

Conductor Brett Mitchell is known for his engaging and thoughtfully curated programs at home and abroad. His 2020–21 season featured debuts with the North Carolina and Fort Worth symphonies, as well as guest engagements with the Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, National, Oregon, San Antonio, San Francisco, and Vancouver symphonies; the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the

Hollywood Bowl; the Minnesota Orchestra; the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra; the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; the Grant Park Festival Orchestra; and a two-week tour with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

From 2017 to 2021, Mr. Mitchell served as music director of the Colorado Symphony in Denver after a year as music director designate (2016–17). During his five-season tenure, he deepened the orchestra’s engagement with its audience and expanded its commitment to contemporary American repertoire — with a particular focus on the music of Mason Bates, Missy Mazzoli, and Kevin Puts. In addition, Mr. Mitchell spearheaded collaborations with such local partners as Colorado Ballet, Denver Young Artists Orchestra, and El Sistema Colorado.

Mr. Mitchell served on the conducting staff of The Cleveland Orchestra from 2013 to 2017, first as assistant conductor and from 2015 on as associate conductor. In these roles, he led the Orchestra in several dozen concerts each season at Severance, Blossom Music Center, and on tour. He also led a production of The Nutcracker with the Pennsylvania Ballet in collaboration with the Orchestra during the 2016–17 season.

Prior to this, Mr. Mitchell was assistant conductor at the Houston Symphony (2007–11), the Orchestre National de France (2006–09), and the Castleton Festival (2009–10). In 2015, Mr. Mitchell completed a five-year appointment as music director of the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra.

Passionate about mentoring young musicians, he was music director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra from 2013 to 2017, leading the ensemble’s second international tour and first to Asia in June 2015. Mr. Mitchell has worked with young musicians at the Cleveland Institute of Music, the National Repertory Orchestra, Texas Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival, and Interlochen Center for the Arts; and has served on the faculties of the schools of music at Northern Illinois University (2005–07), University of Houston (2012–13), and University of Denver (2019).

Born in Seattle in 1979, Mr. Mitchell holds degrees in conducting from University of Texas at Austin and composition from Western Washington University.

16 The Cleveland Orchestra About the Vocalist

Capathia JenkinsVocalist

Capathia Jenkins’s career spans the arts of acting and music. Gripped with passion for each, she has refused to choose — because both represent her soul. She approaches a song the same way she approaches a script, like an artist. She looks for nuance in every detail, for the secrets hidden within the notes or text — intent on taking audiences on an unforgettable journey.

The Brooklyn-born Ms. Jenkins most recently released the critically acclaimed CD Phenomenal Woman: the Maya Angelou Songs with her collaborator Louis Rosen, and they sold out the world-famous Birdland Theatre in New York City for three nights.

She starred as Medda in the Disney production of Newsies on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in The Civil War, where she created the role of Harriet Jackson, and subsequently starred in the Off-Broadway 2000 revival of Godspell. She returned to Broadway in The Look of Love, and created the role of The Washing Machine in Caroline, Or Change and Frieda May in Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me. In 2007, she went back to Off-Broadway and starred in (mis)Understanding Mammy: The Hattie McDaniel Story for which she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. Her stage credits also include Nora Ephron’s Love, Loss, and What I Wore.

As an active concert artist, Ms. Jenkins has appeared with orchestras across North America, from Minnesota to Cleveland, from Atlanta to Seattle, and from San Diego to Toronto, as well as appearing to acclaim in Europe. Her television credits include 30 Rock, The Practice, Law & Order, and The Sopranos.

172021 Holiday Concerts About the Orchestra

The Cleveland Orchestra

Now entering its second century, The Cleveland Orchestra, under the leadership of Franz Welser-Möst since 2002, remains one of the most sought-after performing ensembles in the world. Year after year the ensemble exemplifies extraordinary artistic excellence, creative programming, and community engagement. In recent years, The New York Times has called Cleveland “the best in America” for its virtuosity, elegance of sound, variety of color, and chamber-like musical cohesion, “virtually flawless,” and “one of the finest ensembles in the country (if not the world).”

Founded by Adella Prentiss Hughes, The Orchestra performed its inaugural concert in December 1918. By the middle of the century, decades of growth and sustained support had turned the ensemble into one of the most admired around the world.

The past decade has seen an increasing number of young people attending concerts, bringing fresh attention to The Cleveland Orchestra’s legendary sound and committed programming. More recently the Orchestra launched several bold digital projects, including the streaming broadcast series In Focus, the podcast On A Personal Note, and its own recording label.

The 2021–22 season marks Franz Welser-Möst’s 20th year as music director, a period in which The Cleveland Orchestra earned unprecedented acclaim around the world, including a series of residencies at the Musikverein in Vienna, the first of its kind by an American orchestra. The Orchestra’s 100th season in 2017-18 featured two international tours, concluding with the presentation of Welser-Möst’s Prometheus Project, featuring works by Beethoven, on three continents.

Its acclaimed opera presentations, including Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos (2019), Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande (May 2017), Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin and Bluebeard’s Castle (April 2016), and Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen (2014 and 2017), have showcased the ensemble’s unique artistry and collaborative work ethic.

Since 1918, seven music directors — Nikolai Sokoloff, Artur Rodziński, Erich Leinsdorf, George Szell, Lorin Maazel, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Franz Welser-Möst — have guided and shaped the ensemble’s growth and sound. Through concerts at home and on tour, broadcasts, and a catalog of acclaimed recordings, The Cleveland Orchestra is heard today by a growing group of fans around the world. 18 The Cleveland Orchestra About the Choruses

Lisa Wong was appointed director of choruses for The Cleveland Orchestra in May 2018 after serving as acting director throughout the 2017–18 season. She joined the choral staff of The Cleveland Orchestra as assistant director of choruses at the start of the 2010–11 season, helping to prepare the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and Blossom Festival Chorus for performances each year. In 2012, she took on added responsibilities as director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus.

In addition to her duties at Severance, she is a faculty member at the College of Wooster, where she co-chairs the Music Department, conducts the Wooster Chorus, and teaches courses in conducting and music education. Choirs under her direction have performed at the Central Division conference of the American Choral Directors Association, and several times for the state conference of the Ohio Music Education Association. An advocate for the music of under-represented composers, Ms. Wong serves as the Repertoire and Resource Chair for World Music and Cultures for the Ohio Choral Directors Association. Her previous academic posts include positions in public and private schools in New York, Pennsylvania, and Indiana.

Active as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator, she serves as a music panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts. Recent international accolades have included work at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya, as a part of Tunaweza Kimuziki, and as a conductor for “Conducting 21C: Musical Leadership for a New Century” in Stockholm, Sweden. Ms. Wong holds a bachelor of science degree in music education from West Chester University, as well as master of music and doctor of music degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University.

Now in its 70th season, the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus is one of the few all-volunteer, professionally led choruses affiliated with a major American orchestra. Founded in 1952 at the request of George Szell, the group has been featured in more than 1,200 concerts, including 26 appearances at New York’s Carnegie Hall with The Cleveland Orchestra, along with tour performances in Miami, Puerto Rico, and across Europe. The Chorus has been heard on hundreds of radio broadcasts, in at least a dozen television programs, and on more than 30 commercial recordings with The Cleveland Orchestra — receiving seven Grammy Award nominations and four Grammy Awards.

The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus was honored with the 2019-20 Distinguished Service Award, recognizing extraordinary service to The Cleveland Orchestra.
