December 2017 Principal’s Message

As we enter the last week of school before the Christmas break, I would like to wish all of our

families a very happy holiday season! As we have come to appreciate, the calendar of events

at Miles Mac is “chalk” full of authentic curricular and extra-curricular activities.

December alone featured several fantastic performances and learning opportunities for our

staff and students. As usual, the music program produced two sold-out Christmas concerts that

featured incredible performances from our jazz bands, choirs, guitar classes, concert bands,

Superphonic and Prodigy. Sports were also part of the school landscape, underscored by our

varsity boys’ volleyball team making yet another provincial appearance.

This month our staff and students also organized the following events to showcase learning,

support the community and enhance opportunities for students:

The Cosmetology program ran their annual Cure-a-thon on December 7 to highlight skills

and raise money for CancerCare Manitoba

On December 1 many of our students excelled in the annual French poetry contest,

Concours Les voix de la posie

On December 19, The Arts Council organized an exciting schedule of activities for students

from Polson and Neil Campbell. Our students have organized a Christmas sing-a-long,

face painting, drama games, snack and story time and a dance event! Rumour has it that

Prodigy, Superphonic and the Jolly Old Elf will make an appearance too!

On December 20, our Languages Department coordinated a Festival de langues, a

celebration of various cultures and languages

Finally, we have had several classes and groups contribute to the less fortunate in our

community. Donations, hampers and fundraisers were organized by our staff and students

to help make the holiday season a bit brighter for families in our community

Regardless of how you celebrate the season, please do so with joy and peace surrounded by

The MMC Music Program held its annual Craft and Bake Sale on Saturday,

December 2, 2017.

The hallways and two gyms were home for the day to more than 170

artisans. The committee of parent volunteers was amazing! The opportunity

to visit our bake sale tables filled with wonderful home baked items, sit and

enjoy some delicious food in the canteen, be the lucky recipient of various

prizes and enjoy the diversity of musical entertainment provided by students

are but a small sampling of the beauty of the day.

Thank you to the parents, students and community for being major

contributors to our event. We can hardly wait for the December 1 Craft Sale

of 2018!

Christmas Concert - Songs of the Season

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! On the evenings of December 6th and

7th at 7 o'clock, the Covenant Christian Reformed Church was packed with

friends, family, and Miles Mac alumni, who gathered together to enjoy the Miles

Macdonell Collegiate music programs Christmas special: “Songs of the Season”.

Many great songs were performed, such as “A Fanfare For Christmas” performed

by the Grade 9 band, “A Christmas Spectacular” by the concert band, a

rendition of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” by Superphonic, “Wintersong”

performed by Prodigy, and “O Holy Night” and “O Come All Ye Faithful” sung by

the choir.

It was a spectacular concert, filled with joy, laughter, and even some tears, that

touched the hearts of those in the audience. Miles Macdonell music program

teachers Zane Zalis and Garth Rempel kept the audience on their toes with their

phenomenal musical talent and witty banter, not to mention the hours of work

they put into organizing and directing such an event. The moment Mr. Zalis

pulled out the old accordian, we knew that the Christmas season had finally

begun.

While the voices of the angelic Miles Mac choir filled the room with harmony, the

sing-along segment at the end of the evening tied the show together like a

ribbon on top of the gift that is the Miles Mac music program. The show was

brought to a close with “Silent Night” being sung by those in the choir and the

audience, displaying the heart of the holidays: togetherness.

Coming Soon . . . The Mousetrap!

Auditions for this year's drama production, “The Mousetrap”, took place at the end of

October. Eleven students have been cast in the play, and we have another 25 students on

production crews in the areas of stage management, costumes, props, sets, marketing, and

tech. In addition, we have several MMC staff members and alumni students assisting with

the production. We are so excited to have such a talented and committed team working

on this wonderful play!

The Mousetrap is a murder mystery play by Agatha Christie. It is one of Christie’s most well

known plays, and is the longest running play in history (it has been running at the West End

in London for 65 years). The play is set at Monkswell Manor, a guesthouse recently opened

by Mollie and Giles Ralston, a young couple. Things go awry for the pair when they find

themselves not only snowed in, but in the middle of a murder investigation. Tensions rise as

all of the houseguests begin to suspect one another and even the most innocent seeming

patrons begin to look very, very suspicious. Come and see for yourself why this play has kept

audiences captivated for so many years!

Students are already working hard to rehearse this play and design all of the production

elements. The play will go up March 5 - March 8, with shows beginning at 7:00 pm. Tickets

will go on sale in February and can be purchased from the front office, in the MMC tunnel

at lunch in the 3 weeks leading up to the play, from cast and crew members, or from the

Miles Mac nail technology and hairstyling students just hosted their 16th annual

fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society of Manitoba.

"It’s just a fantastic way for our kids to give back to the community," said teacher, Sherry

Proulx, "We always say to these kids that everyone knows someone who has been

affected by cancer in some way and our goal for this event is to help find a cure."

Cosmetology Cure-A-Thon

Lisa Harris, who has been the hairstyling teacher for 12 years, said she has taught

hundreds of students, many of whom come back for this special occasion.

"This is definitely a great day to have for the kids, they are using the skills that we taught

them. Currently we have 65 students from Grades 9 to 12 enrolled and all of them

participate."

The students performed manicures and scalp treatments for a $10 donation, raffled

prizes and served refreshments to a constant rotation of customers. People of all ages

were in attendance to support the school program and their worthwhile cause.

Marion Bulejsza explained how the idea for the fundraiser came about.

"Years ago, when I was working with another colleague we decided we wanted to do

something for the community, because we are open to the public three days a week

and we have always had a connection with the neighbourhood since we started here.

Patrons come in and get their hair done and support our school program, and our kids

graduate knowing they’re a part of a bigger community," she said, "Many of our kids

are doing great things out there, including graduates that are involved in charities and

raising money for important things."

Students learn a lot about people, customer service, charity, and these classes also

teach real trade skills and lessons that transfer directly into the world of work, for an

employer and at home.

"We find these skills help them, and they also learn about the body and the importance

of healthy living," said Proulx. "We see them cutting hair for their families and at

businesses around the city and taking care of themselves. This is when we are most

proud as teachers, when we see the kid’s independent, doing what we taught them on

their own, and they are professional and caring, and it’s very rewarding."

Before this year’s event the program had raised over $35,000 dollars.

I am pleased to share the wonderful gingerbread construction created and executed

by our gingerbread construction team. We created a Who Ville Christmas complete

with the Grinch. Please stop by the showcase in the hall outside our library. The team

spent over 230 hours creating this master piece. I am so proud of to say everything in

this creation is edible. These students rocked it out of the park. These Buckeyes show

and demonstrate such great school spirit.

Foods Program

Español

Spanish class has been busy last month. Grade 9 class learned about “El dia de

los muertos” and how it is celebrated in Mexico. They learned how to make

these masks. The masks are unique, each design represents the owner

preferences by using flowers and curves that are must for this celebration.

Visual artist Alejandra Diaz came to grade 9 class and taught students how

to design their own masks. The whole class created interesting and fun masks

Grade 10 class enjoyed their learning experience in how to make “Catrinas”

which is another key element for this holiday.

During the month of December, all Spanish classes watched the movie “Coco” It

was a nice way to close the unit “Dia de los Muertos” students listened to

traditional Spanish songs played during this holiday.

Students in Grade 9 enjoyed a traditional “taco” they ordered in Spanish

when the class went to a local Mexican restaurant. During class, students

made their own tortillas and traditional quesadillas. ¡Muy bien chicos!

Celebration of Languages Month!

December has been a month to celebrate languages with the students of the English-

as-an-Additional Language Program. Each morning, EAL students begin the morning

announcements in the one of approximately 20 languages spoken by the students. It is

exciting to hear the students say “Good morning, Buckeyes!” and “Please stand for

O’Canada” in languages from all four corners of the world.

The EAL students also share a little information about their language and culture on the

announcements. Not all cultures celebrate Christmas as we do so our EAL students are

teaching us about their culture and important holidays.

Congratulations to all of our EAL students for sharing your culture, language, and

knowledge with your fellow Buckeyes!

EAL Department

Our cultural events have been going strong!

First, we have had all of our French: Communication and Culture students and French

Immersion students enjoy a cinematic experience of Un Sac de billes, in our very own

theatre!

Students learned about France during World War Two, as the film followed the true

story of a Jewish family that lived there during that time. A representative from Québec

Cinéma was on site to answer questions and to educate students.

On December 1st, we held our Concours des voix de la poésie- our Poetry in voice

competition. Students presented poems in both French and English for the bilingual

portion of the program, or uniquely in French for the Francophone portion of the

program. The following students were the chosen winners in the bilingual program:

Third place : Olivia Cassie.

French Language Department

Serena will be our school’s representative in the bilingual category, at the regional

competition online.

For the Francophone program, Anne-Sandra Isingizwe was our first place winner. She

will also be our school’s representative for the comptetition online.

Our Languages Festival is upcoming on December 20th. So far this month, we have had

our EAL students presenting their traditions for the holidays in various languages on the

announcements each morning. Also, the EAL students were language instructors to

various students willing to learn some new phrases in our Languages Translation

Challenge.

Winners earned the right to enjoy a free lunch item on the days leading up to the

festival. Congratulations go out to :

State of the Province Address and Question and Answer with Premier Brian Pallister

Four students from the Miles Mac ESD Committee (Education for Sustainable

Development) were selected to attend the annual State of the Province Address with

Premier Brian Pallister at the RBC Convention Centre on Thursday December 7th as part

of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce High School BOLD Program. The students,

Anika Moran, Rebecca Knapp, Amber D’Aoust and Ayla King, not only had the

opportunity to be a part of this prestigious luncheon where the Premier outlined his

vision for the upcoming year to 1300 government and business leaders, but they also

had the chance to meet with the Education Minister, The Right Honourable Ian Wishart,

to ask him questions about the future of education in the province. The students are

extremely grateful to have the opportunity to take some of the things that they have

learned in their classes and apply them to the real world. They are really excited about

having the voices of the youth heard by our political leaders and look forward to

participating in upcoming High School Council events that the Winnipeg Chamber of

Commerce is planning in the New Year including the annual State of the City Luncheon

with the Mayor Brian Bowman.

Ethics Bowl

On Friday December 15th the Miles Macdonell Collegiate Ethics Bowl Team participated

in the Regional Finals at the University of Manitoba. The team, which was coached by

Ms. Street, consisted of Cidnee Jacob, Nestor Talledo, Gaelen Maderazo, Quentin

Fecyk, Yarah Barbosa, Sara Bacchus and Chanelle Tremblay. They prevailed in the first

four rounds and eventually made it to the finals where they lost to a very strong Ft

Richmond team. The Ethics Bowl is a collaborative yet competitive event in which

teams analyze a series of wide-ranging ethical dilemmas. Responses are judged

according to the quality of a team’s reasoning and how well team members organize

and present their case, attend to and analyze the morally relevant features of the case

and anticipate and pre-emptively respond to commentary and questions and since this

is not a debate, students are rewarded for their skills at acknowledging and/or

enriching their opponent’s strengths.

Citizenship and Taking Action: Opportunities for Social Studies Students at Miles Mac

The Miles Macdonell ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) student and staff

groups have had a busy start to the year promoting stewardship and sustainability in

the school. Here are some of the highlights of what the group has been working on so

far this year:

Community Garden Project

As part of the “Food From the Land” unit Mr. Fritzsche and Ms. Street’s PB Geography

classes planted the garden in the spring. Green beans, beets, radishes, carrots,

cucumbers, zucchini, and tomatoes were selected for our inaugural effort. Mr.

Fritzsche, Ms. McCrindle, and student volunteers tended to the garden over the summer

and delivered produce to Siloam Mission. In September, green tomatoes, beets, and

carrots were used in some delicious creations by Ms. Brajkovich’s Food and Nutrition

classes. Thank you to Mr. Riley for his help in the construction of the garden boxes and

landscaping the area.

Peace Days

On September 21st Miles Mac held it’s fourth annual International Day of Peace in which

various speakers and workshops were held to encourage our students to be united in

citizenship and action.

Made in Manitoba Breakfast

Miles Mac was selected by Agriculture in the Classroom to host a Made in Manitoba

breakfast for students and staff. On November 1st, grades 10-12 students and staff were

served a delicious meal consisting of pancakes and honey, sausages, eggs and

chocolate milk all sourced from local farms and served by farmers and industry

producers. Students were also given a presentation about the agricultural sector in

Manitoba and the importance of eating locally when it comes to sustainability. A huge

shout out goes to Ms. Brajkovich and the Foods and Nutrition students for helping to

prepare the food, Ms. Ybanez and the ESD student group for volunteering at the

breakfast and Ms. Street, Ms. McCrindle, Mr. Fritzsche, Ms. Brajkovich and Ms. Williams

for organizing the event.

Caring for Our Watersheds Projects

Mr. Fritzsche, Ms. Street, Ms. Belton and Ms. Drobko’s Geography classes will be taking

part in the Agrium “Caring for Our Watersheds” competition. Last year two Miles Mac

students placed in the Top 10 in the province (out of 265 entries)- Breela Bailey won 4th

place and $700.00 for her slam poetry video and teaching package and Rebecca

ESD News

Knapp won 8th place and $400.00 for her Lake WPG art mural proposal at the Caring

for Our Watersheds contest at Oak Hammock. The MMC ESD group is currently in the

process of planning the construction of the Lake WPG art mural project and during

MMC Grade Wars a collection drive was implemented to collect materials for the

project.

Earth Day

Save the date- on Tuesday April 24th, we will be hosting our third annual Earth Day at

MMC! Last year students and staff had the opportunity to engage with several leaders

and organizations in the environmental community. Presenters included climatologist

Dr. Danny Blair from the University of Winnipeg and Susan Lindsay and Curt Hull from

Climate Change Connection. Students participated in DIY workshops, including making

their own eco-friendly air freshener and hand sanitizer. Others learned about the

research being done at the world renowned Experimental Lakes Area by presenters

from the International Institute of Sustainable Development. Homesteading, Slow

Fashion, Green Justice, and Fair Trade were other workshop options that students had.

Lunch time featured a thrift fashion show and ESD themed Minute to Win it games.

Students took their learning back to their Teacher Advisor Groups and came up with

proposals to implement that will effect positive environmental change at Miles Mac and

the community. The winning proposal was from Mr. Shaddock’s TA, and as a result we

were able to install three new bike racks at MMC. This years event promises to be even

more exciting!

The Buckeyes Girls hockey team has been facing some tough competition after moving

into the CTV “A” Division this season. This has been a transition year for the team as

several new players have joined the team and three new coaches, Rick Slobodian,

Chris Rollwagen, and Janelle Yarjau have take over after the retirement of the long

standing coaches Jim Webster, Rick Gacek and Dean Finlay. The girls have battled

hard in each game and are currently tied for 10th place with a record of 3-10-1-1. The

team is looking to turn some of their tight games into wins for the second half of the

season.

A highlight from the season thus far was on Wednesday October 18th the Miles Mac

Female hockey team took on River East in the 2nd annual Breast Cancer Awareness

Fundraiser game. The Buckeyes had a stellar on ice performance winning the game 6-

2. Off the ice both trams did a great job raising over $800 for Cancer Care Manitoba

through 50/50 tickets, a raffle for a toonie stick donated by the Jets and signed by

Matthieu Perrault, and two bake sales put on by the MMC YIP (Youth in Philanthropy)

group.

They are hoping to see many fans out to their home games so come on out and cheer

Girls Hockey

This season the boys are playing in the top tier of the WHSHL - known as the Platinum

Promotions Division. The games have been fast and exciting and the Buckeyes have

competed hard. The team has faced some pretty big challenges from some

good squads and some key players out with injury. Games have been close but wins have

been hard to come by in the early going, with the Buckeyes sitting with 8 points in the

standings half way through the season. The team recently travelled to Montreal to

compete in the Canada Cup tournament. While in la Belle Province the team played four

games against teams from Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Manitoba. The boys also had the

opportunity to see the sights, hiking up to Chalet Mont Royal, taking in a Habs game, and

touring old Montreal. The team also tried their hand at axe throwing at Rage Montreal. The

chance to travel, play hockey, and see different parts of our great country was a special

experience. The team will resume the season in January, travel to Winkler to play in the

annual tournament there, and begin playoffs in mid-February.

Congratulations to grade 12 students Luke McMillan and Riley Choboter who were selected

to represent the Buckeyes at the WHSHL all-star game in January at the Bell MTS Iceplex.

I am very proud to be able to share news from the pool. Our Water Polo team started out

with a great season playing hard and scoring the points to put the team in the A division. The

team supported each other in everything from treading water to skill set working as a true

team. It is very exciting to watch the team in action the power in the pool was explosive!!!

This team always came to each practice ready to swim and learn new skills to play water

polo as a team. We had a great season in the pool and came in 6th in the finals. Great team

spirit true Buckeyes!!!

Pizza lunches for EAL students

Sale of digital versions of MMC Year Books dating back to 1952-53.

With the next major milestone reunion expected to be the 75th in 2027, the current slate

of Association directors is unlikely to be the group that organizes it.

Also, the funds in the trust that allows the Association to provide the scholarships and

other grants for school changes and equipment will require on-going attention.
