This Second Sunday of Advent introduces Saint John the Baptist into the scene. He is the prophet who prepared the people of his time for the arrival of the Savior by preaching a baptism of repentance. He lived a very austere life and reminded everyone, even today, that whatever keeps the Lord from coming to us must be straightened, leveled and made smooth. On December 8th, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception; a Holy Day of Obligation that commemorates the sinless condition of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the very moment of her conception in the womb of her mother, Saint Ann. On this, our Nation’s patronal feast, Pope Francis opens the Holy Year of Mercy. The scriptural focus for the jubilee year will be Christ's command from Luke 6:36, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” But what is mercy, and how is it concretely practiced? Mercy is who God is. It is love's second name. God is more interested in our future than in our past. God takes past sin seriously but never as the last word, because He wants each one of us to become the best version of our self that He wills for each one of us personally. This requires conversion. Our Holy Father is a Jesuit spiritual director to the world, urging us to see just how much God loves us, reorienting our hearts to His. This Divine love allows the individual to practice mercy through concrete acts of charity. Pope Francis stated: “I am convinced that the whole Church will find in this Jubilee the joy needed to rediscover and make fruitful the mercy of God, with which all of us are called to give consolation to every man and woman of our time.” Pondering the mission of Saint John the Baptist and the life of the Immaculate Mary, we realize this Divine Mercy they witnessed. In her song of praise, called the Magnificat, the Blessed Mother proclaimed “The Almighty has done great things for me and Holy is His Name. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation.” Pope Francis states: “From this moment, we entrust this Holy Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she might turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey.”

LITURGICAL INSIGHTS

The Jesse Tree

The Advent Season is marked most recognizably by the Advent wreath, whose candles respectively represent hope, peace, joy and love; whose light represents the Light of the world that the darkness can never overcome; whose evergreen boughs symbolize new life with the Savior Whose birth we await; and whose circular form represents eternity.

Yet, for the past millenium, another symbol has helped the faithful prepare for the coming of Christ: the Jesse Tree. Having its origins in the Middle Ages, the Jesse Tree, named after Isaiah’s prophecy of the Messiah, that “a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, [the father of King David]” (11:1), features illustrated ornaments that represent key events in salvation history from Genesis to Jesus. According to loyolapress.com, “the ornaments of the Jesse Tree tell the story of God in the Old Testament, connecting the Advent season with the faithfulness of God across four thousand years of history.”

This year, in order to help us deepen our parish-wide preparation for the advent, or coming, of Christ, St. John the Beloved will re-connect with this time-honored tradition by featuring a Jesse Tree in our sanctuary. Starting on the first day of Advent and until Christmas, an ornament that has been handmade by our parish school students in their art class, will be hung on the tree and a similar ornament will be displayed in our vestibule space with information about that event in salvation history. With each ornament, the referenced Scripture verse will be read.

For example, one of the first ornaments to be hung will be an apple, representing Adam and Eve’s choice to disobey God, but even moreso, God’s own prophetic revelation that He will send a Savior to redeem humankind and to conquer the serpent’s, that is the devil’s, power.

Many websites, such as catholicculture.org and eriercd.org (Illustrations by Carolyn Pikoulas and text by Anne-Marie Welsh for Faith magazine, published by the Diocese of Erie.), feature Jesse Tree ornaments that may be downloaded for free for use at home with your children and families.

OUTREACHCHRISTMAS FOOD BASKETS

We provide a Christmas Meal for our area needy. The ongoing generosity of our St. John’s parishioners makes this possible. Christmas baskets will be distributed on Saturday, December 12.

In our church vestibule, you will find a display with tags for a chicken, ham, or turkey. Medium to large chickens and hams are especially good choices.

Please take a tag, purchase the meat entrée, and drop the meat off at the Vianney House (M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.), or at the Outreach Office (M/W/F, 8:30-10:30 a.m.), or call 994-7867.

If your supermarket offers a free entrée, perhaps you might make that your donation.

• Other needed items include canned vegetables, gravy, canned fruit, boxed potatoes, canned yams or sweet potatoes, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, coffee, tea, cake mixes, frostings, and aluminum roasting pans.

As always, thank you very much for your generosity. Deadline for donations is Tuesday, December 8, but the sooner the better

Ministry of Caring Sandwich Schedule Eucharistic Ministers

December 10 & 11 Donations of sandwiches are welcome from all parishioners. Delivery can be made to the hall kitchen door on Thursday evenings 6:30pm to 7:00pm and Friday morning before 9:30am. These sandwiches are taken to the Emmanuel Dining Room to help feed those in need. We are especially in need of sandwiches on the 1st and 4th Fridays of the month.

As we begin the joyous season of Advent, I wish to share with you some thoughts on how to celebrate this wonderful season of preparation with your child(ren). This season is one that asks us to reflect on the joyous yes that Mary and Joseph shared with the angel Gabriel. This yes meant more than just doing what was expected. This yes meant that Mary and Joseph had to prepare for the trials and struggles they would face; as well as for the beautiful child they welcome into their home. Their path was not an easy one but it was one that they were willing to undertake so that their lives could truly embrace all that God asks. Through prayer and reflection, our children are asked to place themselves anew in their journey of faith. It is this season that calls us all into this journey of renewal. Let this be a time to be together as family. Come to church, pray with renewed hope and joy. Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation with a happy heart.

During this prayerful season of preparation, please also remember to discern your call to share your gifts and talents with the Religious Education office. Our staff of catechists is a tremendously gifted and caring team of volunteers. We would love to have you join our team. If you are interested in serving, please contact Mrs. Ballintyn at [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Do you have a pet name for your spouse (baby, honey, a nickname that only you use)? It's not essential but often it can remind both of you of your special relationship. It's like calling God, "Abba."

PARENTING POINTERS

St. Nick's Day is Dec. 6. It's a nice custom to put a treat in your child’s shoe the night before. BUT...also remember there are children in our world without shoes. If your child is old enough tell him/her about Soles4Souls https://soles4souls.org. Maybe your child will offer to give an extra pair of shoes.

ANOTHER WAY TO SUPPORT THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

We suspect that many of you, St. John the Beloved parishioners, participate in the annual United Way campaign. The St. Vincent de Paul Society is one of the charitable organizations that you may designate your contribution toward. We encourage, and request that you designate some portion of your contribution to the Society. The Society helps those in need, particularly financially, regardless of the persons race, religion, etc. We strive to help the Poor to become self sufficient. You can designate the Society when you fill out your pledge form by entering The United Way number for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which is # 9284. God bless you for whatever you can do!

Eight Year of Mercy Holy Doors to be opened in the Diocese on December 13, 2015.

The Diocese of Wilmington will mark the beginning of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy with the opening of eight Holy Doors located throughout Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. On Sunday, December 13, Bishop Malooly will open the Holy Door and celebrate Mass at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Easton at 10:30 a.m. That day, Holy Door will also be opened at the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Wilmington, Delaware; St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church in Greenville, Delaware; Holy Spirit Church in New Castle, Delaware; St. Elizabeth Church in Wilmington; St. Margaret of Scotland near Newark, Delaware; St. Ann Church in Bethany Beach, Delaware; and Holy Cross Church in Dover, Delaware. Information about the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy is available at a special Vatican website – www.im.va. Diocese of Wilmington events that are tied into the Jubilee of Mercy will be announced on the diocesan website – www.cdow.org/mercy.

For the Year of Mercy, St. John the Beloved will offer “Wisdom & Works of Mercy”, a program by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC.

The program aims to help us take our wisdom and our faith as inspiration to works of mercy in our families, parishes, and communities. This class provides insights into the relevance of the Trinity in our daily lives, and helps us to put our faith into action. Each week we intend to invite a charity from our community to explain their works and show us how we might be able to help them with our Time, Talent, and Treasure. “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Beginning January 7 we will meet Thursday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00 for 11 sessions. Registering in advance will help us plan facilities and materials. For further information, to sign up for the meetings, and to order books, contact Deacon Dennis at 302-981-4567 or [email protected].

St. John the Beloved will offer “The Book of Isaiah”, a program by Fr. Mitch Pacwa, a popular host on EWTN. This book has been called “The Fifth Gospel” and “The Gospel of

the Old Testament”.

It includes the following quotes: “Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and call His name Immanuel” and “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities, for He Himself is the Prince of Peace”. However, unlike the four Gospels, it was written more than 700 years before the birth of Christ.

Beginning January 5 we will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00 for 26 sessions. Registering in advance will help us plan facilities and materials. For further information, to sign up for the meetings, and to order books, contact Deacon Dennis at 302-981-4567 or [email protected].

The Knights of Columbus will be selling "Keep Christ in Christmas" auto/refrigerator magnets and window stickers before and after all Masses this weekend. Cost - $3.00 each or 2/$5.00. This is a great way to express our belief that Jesus is truly the Reason for the Season.
