Solberg recently told the Lewistown
News-Argus, “I know not everyone
gets to be a head coach, let alone at
a school of their choice and at a
fairly young age. I feel honored,
excited, but also a great sense of re-
sponsibility because I influence a
very large part of lives of about 40
young men.”
Like his father, Monte Solberg
(WHS 1975), Ty is a born and bred
Griz fan. He has had the privilege of
working numerous Grizzly basket-
ball camps and looks forward to the additional
time spent with area youth. Coach Solberg was
married to fellow educator, Sienna, in 2010 and
they are happy to call Missoula home.
The Eagles will start their season in Billings with
Billings Skyview and Billings West on December
9-10
After six years as an assistant coach
for Big Sky High School, Ty Solberg
has been named head coach for the
Eagles basketball team for the upcom-
ing season. This quite an accomplish-
ment for a man who started for his
own high school basketball team just
a few short years ago. Solberg gradu-
ated from Lewistown High in 1999
where he was an outstanding, all-
around athlete lettering in basketball,
football and golf. He continued his
education at the University of Mon-
tana earning his education degree in 2004 followed
by his master’s degree in 2011.
Coach Solberg will have a busy schedule as he
continues his eighth year of teaching American
History at CS Porter Middle School.

Dear Editor, This past summer I had the pleasure of returning to the Westby area for a visit. As newlyweds, we moved out to Chevron Camp in the cold, blustery days of De-cember 1977. However, we quickly felt the warmth of a wonderful community where people truly wanted to know you. The neighbors were super and many of those friends remain dear to us to this very day. Need-less to say, it was wonderful spending time with my dear friend Margaret Krowen at LaCasa in Plenty-wood. Also had an enjoyable dinner and visit with Richard and Renetta Westgard. In reminiscing it somehow felt we had never left. We were residents of the Westby area for eleven years before we transferred with Chevron to the Glen-burn field. Our eldest two sons were born in Plenty-wood. Matt attended kindergarten and first grade at Westby Elementary School. We eventually landed in Rangely, CO, where we’ve lived for the last twenty years. After moving to Rangely we were blessed with the birth of our third son, Adam. Gary is still with Chevron and I work for Rangely School District as a para educator. After my visit last summer, Margaret subscribed to the Westby Border News for us. We are truly enjoying the little newspaper and are surprised how many peo-ple we still know. In closing I want to say you are a unique, tight-knit and caring community. Be proud of who you are and don’t ever change! Sincerely, Louise and Gary Dahl [email protected]

Beatie and I ventured to Plentywood to the Plentywood Centennial “cookbook tasting” so I could do a little research for my column. It is difficult work, but someone has to do it. The committee did a nice job of sampling out reci-pes in each category of the cookbook and had a darling array of aprons both on display and on participants. Of course, we couldn‟t go home without a copy of the book and I have enjoyed thumbing through the pages with sev-eral earmarked for future „research‟. For those of you interested the books are avail-able at Rexall Drug and Angel Light Catering in Plentywood. With this in mind, just a reminder, Marlene Anderson is heading up the Westby Centen-nial Cookbook project; please get your recipes into her as soon as possible. The committee is asking for recipes not appearing in the pre-viously published Westby Community Cook-books. Recipes may be submitted on-line at the Centennial web site: www.westbycentennial.yolasite.com or mail them to Westby Centennial 2013, P. O. Box 61, attn: Marlene, Westby, MT 59275.
The recipes this issue are all featured in the SIMPLE AND ELEGANT COLORFUL CUI-SINE Plentywood Centennial cookbook. I chose recipes I felt relevant to the holiday. Although this recipe of JoAnne Lawson‟s was not featured the day of the tasting, I thought it a very appropriate appetizer or a nice addition to the holiday buffet table. It reminds me of my Dad, he loved cheddar cheese with apple pie………..
CHEDDAR APPLE PIE DIP ¼ cup brown sugar, firmly packed ¼ tsp cinnamon 1 red apple and 1 green apple, finely chopped ½ cup walnut pieces, coarsely chopped 1-8 –oz pkg cream cheese, softened 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese ½ cup sour cream Preheat oven 375 degrees. Combine sugar and cinnamon in medium bowl. Add apples and walnuts; toss to coat evenly. Set aside. Mix cream cheese and cheddar cheeses in medium bowl. Add sour cream; stir until well blended. Spread mixture in a 9 inch pie plate; top with apple mixture. Bake 20 minutes or until heated through. Serve with crackers Sheila Friedrich of the Sheridan County Ex-tension Office submitted this recipe for cheesecake, a perfect Thanksgiving dessert or make mini cheesecake bites for holiday en-tertaining or cookie exchanges. Either way, this sinfully delicious cheesecake will be en-joyed by all. (continues next page)

Beat in sugar until well combined. Beat in eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in butter until well combined. Mix in melted chocolate, liqueur and vanilla. Fold in nuts. Pour into cooled crust. Reduce oven temperature to 300 degrees F. Bake 1 1/2 hours or until cen-ter of filling is just set. Cool completely on wire rack. Refrigerate, covered, several hours or overnight. To serve, place on serving plate. Carefully remove sides of pan. Serve in thin wedges. To prepare the mini cheesecakes, line mini muffin tins with paper liners, place 1 tsp crumbs in bottom and bake for 2 minutes. Use smallest scoop (pampered chef), approxi-mately 1 tablespoon of cream cheese mixture for each cheesecake, bake approximately 15 minutes or until set. Cool; drizzle with melted white or dark chocolate or for a special touch, a dollop of ganache. Makes app 110.
This next recipe is compliments of Dr. Tom Lidahl. It is full of flavor and a perfect way to use up the Thanksgiving ham.
CREAMED CABBAGE SOUP 2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) chicken broth 2 celery ribs, chopped 1 medium head cabbage (3 pounds) , shred-ded 1 medium onion, chopped 1 medium carrot, chopped 1/4 cup butter 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 cups half-and-half cream 1 cup whole milk 2 cups cubed fully cooked ham 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme Minced fresh parsley In a large Dutch oven, combine the broth, cel-ery, cabbage, onion and carrot; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Mean-while, melt butter in a small saucepan. Stir in the flour, salt and pepper until blended. Com-bine cream and milk; gradually add to flour mixture. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Gradually stir into vegetable mixture. Add ham and thyme and heat through. Garnish with parsley. Yield: 8-10 servings.

Public Comment: None Committee Reports: Buildings & Grounds: Mr. Meyer reported that Kanning Concrete was unable to finish pouring the cement for the side-walks and driveway this fall. They dismantled their forms and plan to return in the spring to complete the job. Jensens have the exterior of the building nearly complete and will begin work on the interior soon. The original bids did not in-clude the cost to finish the basement, but it would be easier and less expensive to complete that work now rather than after someone is living in the house, so Jensens will prepare a floor plan and estimate of the cost for the board to consider. Mr. Holecek updated the board on the issues with the thermostats for the heating units installed at the school last year. Mon-Dak has been in con-tact with the manufacturer of the thermostats and is working to get the problems resolved. Unfinished Business: The following policies were given a second read-
ing and submitted for approval by the board. BP1110 (Taking Office) Meyer moved to adopt
this revision, Sundsted seconded. AIF BP1111 (Election) Cartwright moved to adopt
this revision, Meyer seconded. AIF BP1120 (Annual Organization) Joyes moved to
adopt this revision, Cartwright seconded. AIF BP1210 (Qualifications, Terms, Duties) Sundsted
moved to adopt this revision, Meyer seconded. AIF BP1400 (Board Meetings) Meyer moved to adopt
this revision, Joyes seconded. AIF BP1420 (School Board Meeting Procedure) Cart-
wright moved to adopt this revision, Sundsted seconded. AIF BP1532 (Trustee Insurance) Meyer moved to
adopt this revision, Sundsted seconded. AIF New Business: A. Mr. Holecek explained the benefits of form-
ing an Interlocal Cooperative for health insurance premiums. Several schools across eastern Mon-tana would form the cooperative in order to have a larger group of members when receiving pre-mium quotes each year, generally resulting in lower rates.
Meyer made a motion to become part of this Co-operative, Joyes seconded the motion and all voted in favor. B. Mr. Holecek reported that there would be a couple of instances this year when he would have conflicts during JH Basketball practice or games and would need someone else to coach. Cart-wright moved, seconded by Sundsted, to allow Susan Meyer or Teena Holecek to act as coach during Mr. Holecek’s absence. All voted in favor of this motion. C. Mr. Holecek informed the board that Jambo-ree basketball practice will begin January 3, 2012. Practices will be held during PE class three days each week and games will be on Saturday morn-ings for 5 weeks. Mr. Holecek received an appli-cation from Lexi Leininger to coach Jamboree Basketball. Joyes made a motion to hire Ms. Leininger as the Elementary Basketball coach; Sundsted seconded and all voted in favor. D. Mr. Holecek presented information on oppor-tunities available to our students who are partici-pating in FFA through the online Ag classes. Mr. Holecek recommended allowing the students to participate in 2 FFA meets this year; one in Cul-bertson and the State FFA meet in Billings. In order to provide proper supervision for our stu-dents, Mr. Holecek would like to have Mrs. Anderson accompany our students to the meets as chaperone. Costs would be covered by the school district for meals, lodging and registration. All other ex-penses would be incurred by the student and their parents. Meyer moved to allow participation in these FFA meets, Joyes seconded. AIF Announcements/Discussion Superintendent’s Report: Mr. Holecek informed the board that he had sent a copy of our current lease agreement for school-owned housing to the MTSBA to be reviewed by their lawyers. These agreements have been in place for many years and are in need of updating to be in compliance with current laws. Mr. Holecek attended the Westby City Council meeting held on November 14. The City has agreed to install 15mph restricted zone signs both north and south of the school. The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office will be informed of the new signs so they can enforce the restriction through the school zone. (Continues next page)

Mr. Holecek informed the board that the state minimum wage will increase from $7.35 to $7.65 beginning January 1, 2012. The only employees this may affect are the student janitors. Mr. Holecek and other area superintendents at-tended a meeting in Sidney on November 10th. Rick Hill, GOP candidate for governor, and sev-eral other legislators were in attendance. Some area schools are considering implementing “impact stipends” in response to pressure to increase wages due to the impact on living costs caused by oil ac-tivity. MSGIA, the school’s insurance provider, has rec-ommended sending out a letter to community members using the adult weight room informing them of general safety guidelines to follow when using the weight room. Mr. Holecek stated that evaluations are underway for non-tenured certified staff. Evaluations of these three staff members will be completed before the December board meeting. The Staff Christmas Party will be held on Thurs-day, December 8, 2011. Mr. Holecek is in process of getting estimates from interested caterers. Invi-tations will be sent out as soon as suitable arrange-ments can be made.
Joyes moved to approve payment of November payroll warrants #10851-10860 totaling $52,041.11, and November claims warrants #16651-16699 totaling $129,530.07. Sundsted seconded the motion for payment approval, AIF. Payroll warrants #10822 – 10850 and Claims warrants #16588 – 16650 were voided. The Sheridan County Treasurer has converted to a system that facilitates electronic clearing of war-rants, therefore new warrants were ordered with the necessary information encoded on them. The September Extracurricular Financial Report was reviewed followed by a motion by Cartwright to approve; Meyer seconded the motion, AIF. The October Extracurricular Financial Report was reviewed. Meyer moved to approve this re-port, seconded by Joyes and all voted in favor. The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

TUFTON After years of being the symbol of strength
for the family, Gene Tufton used the last of
that strength to lift up his arms so that the
angels could carry him home, after a
short but courageous battle with cancer.
Gene was born Dec. 25, 1936, the first son
of Christian and Clara, and was the best
Christmas gift any of us have ever had. He
grew up on the family farm north of
Comertown, helping with the farming and
ranching.
He was a horse whisperer before the
phrase was coined. He spent many years
breaking horses at the farm. His dedica-
tion ran deep. In his younger years he had
to be locked in the house at night, as he'd
sleep-ride his horse, rather than sleep-
walk, in the middle of winter, in his under-
wear!
Gene had an amazing ability as a fix-it
man. With a little study, he could put any-
thing together, or repair something that
didn't work.
After Ma's death in 1958, we started to
see brother Gene's other roles, as a
mother, father, teacher and best friend.
He was constantly asked, "Gene, why
doesn't this car run?" or "Gene, how do I
get this horse to stop?" or "Gene, what's
wrong with this bread dough?, or "Gene,
why can't I hit anything with this gun?".
He worked hard at making everything
work, and ran the cattle ranch until the
drought of the 1980s convinced him to
look for greener pastures. He bought a
small ranch near Victor, where he raised a
few cows and horses, and later chickens.
He had quite a list of folks that couldn't
wait for him to show up and visit, and de-
liver eggs.
Gene taught us to hunt, fish, and leave
areas cleaner than we found them. He
also enjoyed hiking, snowshoeing, gar-
dening.
Gene was preceded in death by his folks,
Clara (Corcoran) and Christian Tufton,
and their infant son. He is survived by his
brothers and sisters, Edna (Paul) Tkachyk
of Victor, Sonny (Pat) Tufton of Medicine
Lake, Sweede (Kaye) Tufton of Dagmar,
Loren Tufton of Missoula, Lois Tufton of Vic-
tor, Marial (Jim) Hovet of Antelope, and
Sara Tufton. He thought the world of his
nieces and nephews, even with their con-
tinual questions of "Gene, how do you ...?"
He'll also miss his good friends from Sheri-
dan County, especially Dave Marsh and
Dick Johnson.
Gene has been cremated, and a private
ceremony will follow at the farm north of
Comertown.
Gene, we love you and we'll miss you;
we'll be keeping a list of questions for you.
You rest up good now, you've earned it.
You know there won't be any rest once
the rest of us get there.
Condolences and memories may be left
for the family at
www.whitesittfuneralhome.com.

The Leininger annual fall cattle drive was a two day adventure covering 20 miles, herding 300 cattle and spanning four generations. Each fall the Leininger Ranch drives their cat-tle home from their summer pastures in For-tuna to the family ranch north of Westby where they winter and prepare for spring calv-ing.
This years drive was held on October 28th and 30th. Family members sharing in this year's tradition included patriarch Bobby Lein-inger, his two sons, Keith and Les, Keith's daughter, Lexi and Keith's grandchildren, Olivia and Liam (Kory's children).
