0177 Selection from Overture 1812TsCHAIKOWSKY

The motive which inspired Tschaikowsky to write this celebrated overture was undoubtedly a patriotic one. The " programme " of the work deals with the stirring events of the year 181s, culminating in the advance of Napoleon on Moscow and his retreat therefrom. The treatment of the "Marseillaise" as the theme repre- sentative of the French is not particularly r imarkable. This pales into insignificance before the contrasted musical descriptions of the vast Russian spaces, the ex- pression of national humiliation, and, above all, before the extraordinary finale, when, after the burning of Moscow, the bells peal out their rejoicing as the French retreat. Here we get a movement replete with that barbaric splendour of which Russian composers possess the secret. The record is so excellent as to be almost a band in itself; while the Coldstreams have certainly surpassed themselves with their rendering upon this occasion. The two quotations here given are the theme of the finale and a striking passage which follows:-

0178 " Zampa" Overture HEROLD

At one time the most popular of all overtures, now a little overshadowed by such modern pieces as the over- ture to " Tannhäuser ' or Tschaikowsky's " 18-" Its dash and rattle, however, still make it supremely effec- sive in a military hand programme. The Coldstreams take it at a furious pace-giving it, indeed, a sensational rendering-while the lovely clarionet solo does not fail of its true expressive effect. (Steed Ii.)

The Black Diamonds. 10-inch record, 3s. 6d.

G.C. 2-436 Le Dance des Apaches This celebrated dance is now the talk of London. It occurs in the ballet "A Day in Paris," now being given at the Empire and Alhambra Theatres, London. It is exceptionally loud and brilliantly rendered. (Speed 8o.)

La Garde Republicaine (Paris).

12-inch record, Ss. 6d. 030035 L'Invitation ä la Valse WEDER

Weber's famous pianoforte composition of this name is no perfect in conception and so exquisite in melody as to gain rather than lose from a transcription for orchestral or military band. In the band of the Garde Republi.

caine, apart from their beauty of tone and finished en- se,nl'dss, a keen instinct for the niceties of rhythm may be observed. The florid passages, too, give an opportunity for some lovely playing of the wind instruments. (Speed 79.)

La Scala Symphony Orchestra (Milan).

12-inch record, 5s. 6d. 050549 " Si j'etais Roi" Overture ADAM

Adolph Adam was a follower of Auber-this being as sparkling as anything by the composer of " Fra Diavolo." The record is a notable one on account of the beautiful reproduction of orchestral tone-colour which it displays. Note the beauty of tone and dis-

_ tinction of the harp and horn solos in the opening. The performance is also remarkable on account of the brilliant playing of the strings. This is one of the finest pieces of work yet executed by the Scala Symphony Orchestra. The piquancy and daintiness of the subject matter is shown by the example given

Andante sostenuto.

Mr. Evan Williams (Tenor).

12-inch record, 5s. 6d. 02164 Walther's Prize Song WAGNER

(" Meistersinger ") Wagner's Prize-song certainly contains some of the loveliest melody the Bayreuth master ever wrote, which flows out in a light and unforced stream. It is written high for the voice, and constitutes a too arduous task for many tenors. Mr. Evan Williams, however, who delights in transposing a song a note or so above the original key, has no difficulty in this direction. He sings it, too, with a freedom, power, and a vocal beauty which few other concert tenors of the present generation could hope to equal. The singer is again to be congra- tulated on a fine record. (Speed 8z.)

G.C. 3-2988 The Lass of Richmond Hill The charming vein of sentiment imparted into this :rang gives it a freshness and character wh.ch makes it seem quite newt Mr. Williams succeeds in giving it the true flavour of the old English s-ng-and more than this none would ask of him. (Sfiecd 8r.)

Mr. Horatio Connell (Baritone).

10-inch record, 3s. 6d.

G.C. 3-2989 Armourer's Song (" Robin DE KOVEN Hood ")

Mr. Reginald de Koven is an American composer of opera, and this song from his " Robin Hood " should prove interesting by way of introduction to his work in respect to English audiences. It is an original and striking song, and has the additional advantage of bringing to our notice the magnificent baritone voice of illy. Horatio Connell. (Speed Si.)

Puldis/ied by Schirmer.

Mons. Renaud (Baritone).

12-inch record, 5s. 6d. 032093 Romance de I'Etoile (" 0 Star WAGNER

of Eve ") (" Tannhäuser ") Wolfram's Romance is instinct with that wonderful vitality of Wagner's music--it is full of fascination-it has a hold over the ear which it is not likely to lose. Mons. Renaud is the principal baritone of the Paris Opera, and the beauty of his voice and the intensity of his style will be remembered. Both these qualities are remarkably exemplified in this fine reproduction of "O Star of Eve." (Speed 79.)

Mr. Robert Radford (Bass).

10-inch record, 3s. 6d.

G.C. 3-2996 Gipsy JohnA song of the road with a jovial swinging tune. The words are clear, and the song is delivered in that sturdy. rousing vein with which this artist is able to make his most telling effect. It is, in short, one of the best examples of Mr. Radford's style we have heard for some time. (SIIeed 8z.)

Published by Gnnsey & Ca.

Madame Jones-Hudson (Soprano).

12-inch record, 5s. 6d. 03125 Serenade Gouxov

(With Flute Obligato by Mr. Eu Huusox.) In Gounod's Serenade, beloved of the light soprano, Victor Hugo's poem has been composed in the style of a pastoral with rocking accompaniment, here set off by the sprightly tones of the flute. The obligato is here very finely played indeed, being a marked feature of the performance. Madame Hudson is also in her best voice, the result being a brilliantly successful record. (Speed 80.)

Messrs. John Harrison and Robert Radford.

10-inch record. 3s. 6d. G.C. 4483 The Gendarmes' Duet OFFENBACH

The famous Gendarmes' Duet from Offenbach's "Genevieve de Brabant," which at one time was in everyhody s mouth. To say that "Messrs. Radford and Harrison enjoyed singing this wound he falling short of the mark. It is full of sly touches of humour and comic effect. (Speed go.)

Mr. Harry Lauder.

12-inch record, 5s. 6d.

01013 McGregor's Toast Instead cf singing a song, Mr. Harry Lauder upon this occasion gives us a toast-in verse. The Scottish comedian has the gift of speech in equal degree to the gift of song-and his toast, with additional remarks by himself, is excellently spoken and full of good humour. (Seed 8s.)

Mr. George Robey.

12-inch record, Be. 6d.

C2167 The Widow of Colonel de Tracey Mr. George Robey is here as funny as ever in a clever female impersonation. The conversation of this excel- lent widow is besprinkled with classical quotation, in French and Latin, as befits her station-even though these occasionally seem to be a little in the wrong place. Mr. Ropey utters them, without doubt, as to the manner born. (Stead 7q.)

(The four following songs are being sung in

nearly every Pantomime in the Kingdom.)

Mr. Herbert Payne.

10-inch records, 3s. 6d. c- c. 3-2995 My little Eva COHEN AND LOHENWORTH

One cannot but admit the advantage gained to the popular song, with a chorus by the infusion of a little American blood into its composition. The chorus of

Little Eva " contains the utmost possible amount of "go," and it has just ei ough flavour of a transatlantic novelty to give piquancy. It is without doubt splendidly sung. (Speed 80.)

c. C. 3-2924 Far away in Australia DAREWSKI

Popular melody with very dainty lilt and swing, which catches the ear at once. Its genial strains do one good to listen to. (Sbeed Si.)

Published by Francis, Day 9 Hunter.

c.c. 3-2993 Come, be my Rainbow WONRICH

Very pronounced ragtime melody, which Mr. Herbert Payne gives with clearness and force of delivery. This song is still the favourite with the populace. (Sbaerl 99.)

Published by Frauds, Day & Hurs es-.

Mr. Henry Tucker.

10-inch record, 3s. 6d.

c.c. 3-2992 BombadierThere is no disputing the force and vigour of this song, which is a distinct novelty among melodies of a popular order. It is about a girl who loves a soldier, and ha, a chorus which hits you like a military salute. It should certainly make a popular item for forthcoming pantomimes. (Speed Sr.)

Published by Francis, Day &a Hunter.

Mr. Bransby Williams.

12-inch record, 5s. 6d. 01014 Sidney Carton's Farewell DICKENS

("The Tale of Two Cities") From a dramatic version of Dickens' "Tale of Two Cities." Charles Darnay, it will be remembered, is condemned to the guillotine, whereat, Sydney Carton, a dissolute barrister, who bears a certain likeness to the prisoner, is willing to become Darnay's substitute for the sake of his wife and child. Carton goes to execution and Darnaysscapes. These words are spoken to Lucie, the wife, for whom Carton had cherished a secret and hopeless admiration. This effective mono- logue is another example of Mr. 13ransby Williams' celebrated character studies from Dickens. (Speed 8o.)

Renard Trio (Messrs. Renard, Fellowes, and R. Epstein). 12-inch record, 5s. 6d.

08011 Love's Garden SCHUMANN

This excellent trio is of simpler type than preceding examples, and suggests an arrangement of one of Robert Schumanns many fine melodies in this form. Its calm restfulness is very typical of its composer, and the whole is most beautifully and expressively played, while the record is marked by good tone. (S¢eed So.)

Mr. Alexander Prince.

10-inch record. 3s. 6d.

G.C. 9145 High Jinks The strains of Alex. Prince's concertina sound as genial and crisp as ever in this festive example, and record with marvellous clearness and good tone. (Steed Si.)
