ADVENT: THAT MOMENT BEFORE THE CURTAIN RISES ON THE STAGE.....(a la Frederick Buechner) Several years back I gave up on fighting against the commercial secular world of celebrating the Christmas and holiday season long before it gets here. I've tried all sorts of ways really to keep the Advent season and Christmastide separate, in order to celebrate better the gift of Christ to the world. All the advertisements, TV spots, e-mails, parties, open houses, and some church events really celebrate the event long before the church year and calendar roll out the holiday.

The trees go up; the cards are sent; invitations are accepted. I'm wandering through aisles of Christmas tinsel the day after All Saints and Halloween. Since I'm a person for whom "outward and visible symbols" are a really big help in reminding me to stay focused on my daily spiritual journey, I keep a small Advent wreath on my breakfast table to remind me that the "count-down" is still going on. The small booklet by C.S. Lewis on Advent reflections begins my day. Something...anything...that will get my attention is really what keeps me mindful of the hope and the expectancy that God will break through to us in a very natural and beautiful way at Christmastide. But then, I think, he does break through to me daily, if I but have the eyes, ears, and heart to perceive him coming to me in the events and faces of those I encounter every day and in every way. So, I suppose, I might use this Advent time to pay more attention to these very concrete ways in which Christ still comes to me, and patiently waits for my willingness to offer my time, talents, or treasure in re-sponse and gratitude for his saving birth in Bethlehem.

ADVENT BOOKLETS STILL AVAILABLE Copies of our “A World Awaits,” featuring daily reflections for Advent from the works of C.S. Lewis

are available in the Narthex. Keep the booklet handy on the breakfast or dinner table and make a

point to read the reflection for each day in the Advent season. You’ll find that it helps to keep you

focused in the midst of the hectic activities that usually accompany the Advent Season. Padre+

HELP WANTED

Our devoted longtime Nursery Coordinator, Kay Wadlington, is retiring! We give thanks to Kay for her years of dedi-cated ministry to our youngest in the nursery, as we seek a new nursery coordinator to take on that ministry and supervise our nursery staff.

St. George’s has once again received a grant from Church Home as we continue to build our Children’s and Family Ministry. We are grateful to again have this support, and we are looking for someone to help coordinate our pro-gramming for the coming year. Responsibilities will include coordinating volunteers and helping to plan activities for families with children. Job descriptions will be posted on the church website at www.stgchurch.org.. If you would like to learn more about either of these ministry opportunities or know someone else who might be, please contact Mother Dorothy ([email protected]).

PLEASE TURN IN YOUR VESTRY NOMINATIONS FOR 2015 TO THE OFFICE We are now asking for nominations for those who feel called to the special ministry of serving on the Vestry. Nominees will stand for election at our upcoming annual meeting. The eligibility requirements for service on the Vestry are as follows: The nominee must be 18 years of age or older and a communicant in good standing, According to St. George’s by-laws, a “Communicant in Good Standing” is one (i) who is a member of this Parish Church and who has received the Sacra-ment of Holy Baptism with water in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, whether in this Parish or in another Christian church, and whose baptism has been duly recorded in this Parish, (ii) who has, after appropri-ate instruction, been confirmed by a Bishop in Communion with the Episcopal Church, having made a mature public affirmation of faith and commitment, (iii) who has received Holy Communion in this Parish at least three times dur-ing the preceding year, and (iv) who is known to the Treasurer and who, for the previous year, has been faithful in corporate worship, unless for good cause prevented, and has been faithful in working, praying and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God.

Vestry job description and nomination forms can be viewed and downloaded from the church website at www.stgchurch.org from links in the St. George’s News article. Nomination forms are due in the church office by Dec. 8. Please prayerfully consider whether you may be called to this ministry. The 2015 class that is rotating off the Vestry – Grant Bales, Tracey Black, Verlinda Henning, Jim McLaughlin and Carolyn Patterson – would be more than happy to provide you with any additional information you may need.

A NEW CURATE FOR ST. GEORGE’S NEXT JUNE

Over the past several weeks, I have been in conversation with Bishop Johnson about the possible placement of a curate here at St. George's, beginning in 2015. I am thrilled to announce that the Bishop and Diocese will again extend this support to St. George's, for which we are exceedingly grateful. Pending her graduation from seminary, her fulfillment of all canonical requirements and, God-willing, her ordination to the transitional diaconate, Chandler Whitman will join our staff in June 2015. We are so excited to welcome her! Dorothy+

WORSHIP MINISTRIES

Each Sunday one or more of the Lay Eucharistic Ministers comes to the altar at the end

of the service and we send them off with a Home Communion set and the Pray of Com-

missioning “In the name of St. George’s, we send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that

those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ’s body and blood.

We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup.” Have you

ever wondered what happens next? Here is a photo of Bob White and Susan Hailey en-

joying a short visit with member Norfleet Turner after serving him Communion last Sun-

day.

FROM THE BOOKSHOPPE SHELVES…

December’s here, and that means it’s time to think about the Advent and Christmas season—times for gift-giving and for reflecting on the true meaning of the season.

At the Bookshoppe this month, we have the perfect items for both!

New children’s Christmas selections this year include Saint Nicholas and the Mouse of Myra, The Christmas Cat and Why Christmas Trees Aren’t Perfect; returning favorites include Room for a Little One, God Gave Us Christmas, Mortimer’s Christmas Manger, Humphrey’s First Christmas, and Song of the Stars.

Meditations and reflections for Advent and Christmas include Sybil Macbeth’s new book The Seasons of the Nativity: Confessions and Practices of an Advent, Christmas and Epiphany Extremist, The Christmas Countdown (a book of family activities for the Ad-vent season), and O Come Emmanuel (a devotional book based on beloved and familiar Advent and Christmas musical selections).

Other gift selections include Christmas music CDs featuring brass ensembles and bell choirs, purses and wine bottle bags with seasonal designs, new jew-elry from Deidre & Company with Christmas designs, new selections from local

artisan 7 Lucky Stones, and Agnes Stark pottery. We also have adorable stuffed animals for kids of all ages. Be sure to stop in on Sunday, December 7, for our annual Holiday Open House, featuring light refreshments and the return of our popular Kid’s Table, where children can pick out gifts for their families and friends at kid-friendly prices. Make us your first choice for the festive season!

ANNUAL REPORTS

It is that time of the year again to submit your annual reports to the church office. Eileen Fields has sent copies of last years full report to all committee and ministry chairmen. We are asking each ministry area to write a new and updated report so please take some time to reflect on what you have accomplished this year and what you may have planned for 2015. The deadline for reports to be emailed to Eileen is January 12th. Please send your reports in a word doc file as she cannot manipulate PDF versions.

A YEAR-END BUDGET REMINDER –

Income through November 30 YTD (Preliminary) $573,863

Expenses through November 30 YTD (Preliminary) $601,580

Net Income (Loss) ($27,717)

Currently, our net shortfall is $27,717. The only way for us to end 2014 in the black is for all of us to do whatever we can to meet or exceed our pledges for the year. Last year, in the month of December, our income for that month balanced our budget. We hope that can happen again. The current economy is affecting each one of us, some more than others, and we ap-preciate your effort, and thank you for your generosity.
