RANDOM THOUGHTS DIFERENTES PENSAMIENTOS from Father Bill Promesso Holy Families in the New Year This weekend we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Maybe we cant measure up to their level of holiness, but we can certainly try to welcome a sense of the holy into our family life as we begin 2018 tomorrow. A good resolution is to wake up and offer a prayer of thanks, start each meal with prayer and end each day with prayer. These prayers dont have to be long or formal. They can be short and casual. But by offering them, we stay connected with God throughout the day and are more likely to remember that we are never far from the Lord in the challenges of the 365 days ahead. God blesses us with an abundance each day and we do well to pray with hearts full of gratitude as we wake, eat and rest. These prayers can become a good habit to start as a new year begins and are easily taken up by children and grandchildren when theyre part of a familys daily rhythm. May 2018 bring you newness. New life, new goals, new happiness, new health, new achievement, new dreams and new blessings from God. May each day be overflowing with gratitude and your heart be filled with joy. May you be a blessing for others (especially your family) through your example of faith, hope and love. Happy New Year! P.S. January 1, 2018 is not a holyday of obligation because it falls on Monday. Enjoy the day! Fifth Sunday Rosary December 31 after 11am Mass Come and pray the Rosary with the Riverview Knights of Columbus. What better way to end the current year and begin a New Year. Holy Families in the New Year This weekend we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Maybe we can’t measure up to their level of holiness, but we can certainly try to welcome a sense of the holy into our family life as we begin 2018 tomorrow. A good resolution is to wake up and offer a prayer of thanks, start each meal with prayer and end each day with prayer. These prayers don’t have to be long or formal. These prayers can become a good habit to start as a new year begins and are easily taken up by children and grandchildren when they’re part of a family’s daily rhythm.

I was thirsty and you gave me drink,

a stranger and you welcomed me. Matthew 25:35

A New Year Prayer

Dear Father, Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen —Attributed to St. Francis of Assisi

I wish you all a Happy New Year! Kim Switzer, Director of Christian Service & Outreach 2017 Stewardship Contribution Statement

I have made it a point several years ago to wake up each morning and before I get out of bed to say Good Morning to God and most importantly to say THANK YOU. I have done this faithfully and it helps start my day on a positive note.

A Prayer for January 1

God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another.

As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time.

I pray that 2018 is a year of gratitude and new beginnings. May God Bless you today and always.

Stacey Sutowski-Shurtz Director of Elementary Catechesis and Youth Ministry

Thank you As I look back on 2017 I can say that I have had many more smiles then frowns or tears. During the year, I have had wonderful times with family and friends, near and far. I camped in new places and experienced new foods, sights and sounds. My great aunt who was 95 years old died of cancer, but fortunately she did not suffer long and I was able to visit with her before she was too sick. My son passed an important job physical and interview and will hopefully be starting his new position soon. My daughter is continuing to do well at CMU. I have been very happy in my work here at St. Cyprian and enjoy the time I spend with the youth of our church. I have the best catechists, volunteers and co-workers to help me. I consider myself to be truly blessed and am very thankful for all that I have.

“If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.” Meister Eckhart

Stewardship Thoughts The theme of family connects today’s Scripture readings. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and those who revere their mother store up riches, the passage from the Book of Sirach teaches us. Those who care for aging parents are not forgotten, and their kindness is planted as an offering against sin. In St. Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is presented to the Lord in the Jerusalem Temple, in accordance with Mosaic Law. The Holy Family then returns to Nazareth, where Jesus grows in strength and wisdom. In his Letter to the Colossians, St. Paul stresses bearing with one another and forgiving one another… as the Lord has forgiven you. … Christ’s peace must reign in our families’ hearts. As St. John Paul II emphasized, the family is the “Domestic Church.” Vocations are born in families that embrace the Catholic faith. May we, as faithful stewards, continue to strive, build, and pray for solid Christian families in an increasingly antifamily world. To strengthen your family, make a daily habit of praying and eating at least one meal together. Most important, attend Sunday Mass as a family and partake of Holy Communion.

A new you The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. —G.K. Chesterton
