SAINT OF THE WEEK

SAINT

JUAN DIEGO DECEMBER 9

Thousands of people gathered in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe July 31, 2002, for the canonization of Juan Diego, to whom the Blessed Mother appeared in the 16th

century. Pope John Paul II celebrated the ceremony at which the poor Indian peasant became the Church’s first saint indigenous to the Americas.

The Holy Father called the new saint “a simple, humble Indian” who accepted Christianity without giving up his identity as an Indian. “In praising the Indian Juan Diego, I want to express to all of you the closeness of the Church and the pope, embracing you with love and encouraging you to overcome with hope the difficult times you are going through,” John Paul said. Among the thousands present for the event were members of Mexico’s 64 indigenous groups.

First called Cuauhtlatohuac (“the eagle who speaks”), Juan Diego’s name is forever linked with Our Lady of Guadalupe because it was to him that she first appeared at Tepeyac hill on December 9, 1531. The most famous part of his story is told in connection with the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. After the roses gathered in his tilma were transformed into the miraculous image of Our Lady, however, little more is said about Juan Diego.

In time he lived near the shrine constructed at Tepeyac, revered as a holy, unselfish, and compassionate catechist, who taught by word and especially by example.

Sharing the Gospel When you play on a baseball team, you learn

how to pay attention. Your coach reminds you and your teammates to stay ready. You

learn to watch the ball. Those are good lessons to learn, because Jesus wants you to pay attention, too. Keep your eyes and

your mind on Jesus, so you're ready when he comes.

Prayer Jesus, help me to stay ready for you.

Based on an ancient legend, Kristoph and the First Christmas Tree is a video production drawn from the family-friendly story written by children’s author Claudia Cangilla McAdam and illustrated by Dave Hill.

It’s Christmas Eve in the year 722, and the young orphan Kristoph is accompanying the missionary priest Boniface through the German countryside on their way to the first Christmas the boy will celebrate outside the orphanage. They are hurrying to reach the next village by nightfall when they come upon a group of men worshiping a sacred oak tree and preparing to sacrifice the son of the village chieftain.

What happens next recalls the legend of how evergreen trees became part of the celebration of Christmas. This story beautifully retells an incident from the life of St. Boniface, the martyr who became the patron saint of Ger-many.

Available on FORMED.ORG. Use parish code TVK33T.

School of Religion students will receive the sacrament of Reconciliation during their normal SOR class time on either December 6th or December 13th.

December 3, 2017 MARRIAGE MINUTE

When will it end?

Hurricanes, wild fires, mass shootings, terrorist attacks, and the prospect of nuclear war with North Korea can prompt

us to ask the Lord, “When will it end, or when will you return?”

Advent is very short this year, and it is intended to remind us that the Lord can come when we least expect it. Even if Christ does not return soon, our life could end sooner than we expect. This advent, live your marriage with no regrets by telling your spouse:

What are you most grateful for about your spouse? What are you most attracted to? What can you forgive in your spouse? What can you ask for forgiveness?

Consider the gift of a more joyful and intentional marriage for Christmas by attending the Every Day in Love Date Night on January 13th. Register at www.archkck.org/everyday.

Everyday Stewardship My wife and I have three children. Each time we realized we would be having a child, thoughts ran through our minds about what this child would be like. Who would they become when they grew older? What would they like and dislike in this world? Would they grow in faith or struggle with truth? As parents we were entrusted with these three gifts from God. We became stewards of these precious ones since they always truly belonged to him. We were able to help mold them and shape their lives, but we could not live their lives for them.

I bet the parents of Mary had many of the same concerns and dreams for their child. Yes, being born without original sin would give her a head start, I am sure, but she would still need to live her own life. No one could live it for her. Each decision would change her life's path, even if just a little. In the end, we certainly know how important her decision to say yes was when it came her turn to be a parent. Mary is a profound example of good stewardship living. As we live each day, we can look to her for inspiration. Her strength of character, her devotion to God, and her courage in the face of the unknown helped her to be the best steward possible of the gift of above all gifts, Jesus. As parents, look to Mary. As disciples, we need to look to her Son. As everyday stewards, we are called to say yes to all the rich gifts God has given us.
