Tere will bea reception in her honor this Friday,December 5th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. On display at Wheatgrass for themonth of December is a collection ofBrittanys typography artworks. Its basically a Sharpie oncanvas, she explained, with a splashof Gouache (opaque water color)here and there. Ive always enjoyed

typography as no two pieces are ever

alike, she says. I love that. If Brittany finds a quote thatjust seems fitting, her Sharpie goesto work, be it two words or a lengthysentence. One of her works happensto be a quote from her pastor that hithome with her: Seek the Kingdom ofGod above all else and live righteouslyand he will give you all that you need. Another favorite is a quote hermother found: Every love story is

beautiful but ours is my favorite.

Brittanys Sharpie can also goto the canvas for anyone who has aquote or saying. Everyone is welcome to stop byWheatgrass Arts and Gallery, locatedat 531 2nd Avenue South, this Fridayevening for some wine, cheese anda little Christmas cheer to check ouBrittanys brilliant typography andbrowse through the other artistsdisplays.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the inaugural

Beer Mile World Championships! Yes, the Flotrack Beer Mile World Championshipsare being held this evening, Dec. 3rd, in Austin, exas. What is a beer mile? In short, it is a recognized race with very specificrules that involves competitors drinking a completecan of beer, then running a 400-meter lap on a track, fourtimes in a row. Four beers, four laps, as fast as you can do it.Cookie tossing has gotten the better of many a beer-miler. Te sudsy race was invented back in 1989 by seven

Canadian runners in their late teens and early 20s,looking for a laugh on a muggy August night. Swill fourbeers and sprint four laps beer, lap, beer, lap, and soon. Adding beer to the mile seemed a fine combinationof the groups primary pastimes that summer. Tey hadbecome friends through high school cross-countryand track. Te youngest, Graham Hood an eventualOlympian in the 1500 meters was 17, still in highschool, and still under Ontarios legal drinking age of19. Te oldest, at 26, was Kelly Harris, who had coacheda few of the guys on their city running team.

Fenton had a vision of organizing a beer

mile event to feature the undergroundcommunitys finest athletes. In Aprilof 2014, the Beer Mile was brought tothe forefront when the coveted five-minute mark was bested by JamesNielsen4:57 to be precise. Nielsen happens to be a two-time NCAA NationaChampion in the 5-K. Hes dedicated the past year totraining and can now run a mile on an empty stomachin 4:10. With a belly full of beer, he figures he can makeit in maybe 4:25. So thats saying he can chug four beersin around 15 seconds. Mark and Ryan realized that the fastest beer milerneeded to square off in a race under the same lights. Anultimate Beer Mile Champion needed to be crowned: aBeer Mile World Champion! Make no mistake, though the idea seems like ajoke, participants and organizers take it very seriouslyespecially at the world championship level. It will haveall the trappings of a pro-level track meet, includingfully automatic timing, strict adherence to the beer mil

rules, a $5,000 prize for the win and a new world record. And there will actually be more than one championas there is also the womens elite beer milers.

Now, here are the official rules for this eveningsFlotrack Beer Mile World Championships:Each competitor drinks four cans (or bottles) of beerand runs four laps on a track.

    Start - beer/lap, beer/lap, beer/lap, beer/lap - Finish

Beer must be consumed before the lap has begun, within the transition area.

(The 10 meter zone before the start/nish line.)

The race begins with the drinking of the rst beer in thelast meter of the transition zone.

This ensures the competitors run a complete mile.

Competitors must drink cans or bottles of beer and the

contents will be no less than 12oz.

Bottles may be substituted for cans as long as they are atleast 12 oz (355 ml) in volume.

No specialized cans or bottles may be used that give an

advantage by allowing the beer to pour at a faster rate.

Super mega mouth cans or vortex bottles and othersuch containers are prohibited.

Beer cans must not be tampered with in any manner.

No shotgunning or puncturing of the can except for

opening the can by the tab at the top.

Beer must be a minimum of 5% alcohol by volume.

The beer must be a fermented alcoholic beverage

brewed from malt and avored with hops.

Each beer can must not be opened until the competitorenters the transition zone on each lap.

Competitors who vomit before they nish the race mustcomplete one penalty lap at the end of the race.

Immediately after the completion of their 4th lap.

Like it or not, beer-mile mania is for real. Beermilers are in running clubs and start-ups, on campusesand Olympic teams. In fact, the guys who invented itare now teachers, accountants, I executivesin otherwords, well-adjusted folks who could be your neighbors. Lance Armstrong even decided to give the sport a

go at a recent qualifying event, but the challenge provedtoo much. Armstrong has completed the New York CityMarathon in under three hours twice, but the disgracedcyclist was unable to make it past a single lap of the BeerMile. Watch the Beer Mile World Championships live asit is being broadcasted from Yellow Jacket Stadium inAustin, exas; coverage begins at 5:00 our time. Go towww.flotrack.com.
