CRATER LAKE, Ore. – Park Rangers at Crater Lake National Park are calling on the public’s help. They are trying to find a vandal who went off-roading at the national site. Rangers says the illegal driving on the Road to Rim Village caused “substantial damage” to plants and resources at the park. Damaging federally protected resources is a federal crime. The person, or people, responsible could be charged up to $5,000 and face six months in prison for each offense. Park staffers are responsible for repairing and rehabilitating areas damaged by vandals, they say that process takes several hours each year. Rangers believe the crime took place late Saturday, November 23rd or in the early morning hours Sunday the 24th. If you have any information, you’re urged to call NPS Law Enforcement at (541) 594-3053 or submit a tip online.

Don’t Follow Your GPS in a Winter Storm MEDFORD – The Jackson County Roads and Sheriff’s Departments are urging travelers to not follow their GPS devices to navigate around road closures in a winter storm. As a result of Tuesday’s difficult travel conditions and Interstate 5 closures, many drivers diverted onto high mountain county roads in an attempt to by-pass I-5, only to get stuck and require assistance. Many motorists, including semi-trucks which are prohibited under winter conditions, diverted onto Dead Indian Memorial Road, a remote, steep, narrow road that is 1000’ higher in elevation than Siskiyou Pass and is far more difficult to drive than I-5. Most of these motorists were unprepared for the driving conditions, did not install chains and several crashed or slid off the road requiring assistance. “Diverting from major highways to rural, remote county roads during a winter storm in hopes that you can make it is not a wise decision,” noted John Vial, Jackson County Roads and Parks Director. The most challenging incident occurred when thirteen vehicles diverted from Interstate 5 onto Colestin Road and spent most of the night waiting for Jackson County Search and Rescue and County Road Department employees to rescue them. Response crews were able to remove the stranded vehicles around 3:00 am Wednesday morning. Sergeant Shawn Richards who responded to the incident noted, “We are seeing an increasing trend of drivers choosing to blindly follow a GPS into areas they are not familiar with and as we have seen in other areas, this could have turned out tragic, I’m grateful this time it didn’t.” Colestin Road is a narrow, very steep, gravel road that is unmaintained during evening hours, that leads from the summit of the Siskiyou Pass into northern California. The route is signed as not being maintained after dark in the winter. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office

District for 15 years and then continued to work in education after her and her second

husband Edward moved to Chiloquin, Oregon. She cherished the time she spent tutoring,

hosting guests, subbing and antiquing.

Esther enjoyed baking, gardening, traveling, education, helping others and spending time

with family.

Forever in Our Hearts

A Silent Tear

Just close your eyes and you will see

All the memories that you have of me

Just sit and relax and you will find

I'm really still there inside your mind

Don't cry for me now that I am gone

For I am in the land of song

There is no pain, there is no fear

So dry away that silent tear

Don't think of me in the dark and cold

For here I am, no longer old

I'm in that place that's filled with love

Known to you all, as "up above"

Sunday Dec 1: A major winter storm that hammered the western United States and northern Plains with heavy snow and strong winds over the past couple of days has now reached the Great Lakes region. In South Dakota, 9 people were killed after a plane crashed due to severe weather on November 30, 2019. In Arizona, two children died while another is still missing after flash floods carried their vehicle away on November 29.

Heavy rain and snow hit parts of California, leaving more than 17,000 without power. Around 1200 mm (47 inches) of snow was recorded at the Big Bear Mountain Resort on its opening day, November 29. "This is pretty unreal, especially for Southern California," said Justin Kanton, Big Bear Mountain Resort spokesman.

Across parts of the northeastern US, a dangerous ice storm will occur on Sunday, December 1-- a busy travel period as the Thanksgiving holiday ends. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Rob Miller said the worst of the ice build-up ranging from 6 to 13 mm (0.25 to 0.50 inches) of freezing rain is possible over south-central and central Pennsylvania and western Maryland. "A glaze of ice of this magnitude is likely to bring down trees and power lines, which can block roads and knock out power for several days in some locations," he continued. Read more Heavy snow blanketed the Antelope Valley in California as a storm hit the high desert area on November 28, 2019. "So we wake up, we look outside the window, and there's just snow. It's wild. It's crazy," said resident Christopher Romero. Romero added that he has never seen his home in Palmdale covered in snow. Ashish Oza said the scene was like "a winter wonderland," and "It's a once in a lifetime experience. I don't know if I'll ever see it again. It's amazing." Read more

More than a month's worth of rain fell in a 3-hour period in Salvador, capital of Bahia State, Brazil on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, putting the city on high alert. The city's Civil Defense said the rain dumped 169 mm (7 inches) of rain in the morning. The monthly average for November is 106.5 mm (4 inches). Heavy rains produced flooding and landslides across the city, leaving streets flooded and around 100 homes damaged. The Civil Defense reported over 300 weather-related incidents. Portions of the city are vulnerable to landslides, so nearly 300 residents were displaced. No fatalities were reported. Read more See a video

Looe, in Cornwall, England, has the dubious accolade of being the most frequently flooded town in the country. Steve Marks, who oversees much of the Environment Agency’s work in Looe, says the town runs the risk of flooding every time there is a spring tide, which happens twice a month. These existential threats are not confined to Looe. The British coast is crumbling into the sea at an accelerating rate, with huge chunks of cliffs and beaches being swept away in storms each winter. Yet smaller coastal communities such as Looe only qualify for limited government funding for flood defence, which is

targeted at more densely populated areas. Other stretches of the Cornish coast are similarly threatened. Up to 100 properties around the county’s rugged coastline are currently at imminent risk from coastal erosion On the east coast – where cliffs composed of soft layers of silt, clay and sand are eroding at one of the fastest rates in Europe – councils in less populated areas cannot afford to upgrade sea defences or enable residents to move away from danger. Among the most severely affected places is Hemsby in Norfolk. Seven homes had to be demolished last year when cliffs collapsed into the sea, and seven were destroyed during the most powerful storm surge in 60 years in 2013. In September, Dutch engineers completed an ambitious project to better protect a gas terminal on a fast-eroding stretch of the Norfolk coast with a vast artificial sand dune, made up of 1.8 million cubic metres of sand dredged from the North Sea. The new dunes are expected to safeguard the terminal as well as hundreds of homes in Bacton and Walcott for 15 to 20 years. The engineer who came up the idea, Jaap Flikweert, says it gives residents the opportunity to prepare for coastal change. “This is about buying time. That coast is going to continue to erode but there is another decade or two for the government to come up with better ways to adapt.” On north-west edges of Wales an even more fraught human drama is playing out – one that could well be repeated elsewhere as the century reaches its midpoint. Fairbourne, a much-loved village of 461 properties, with about 700 residents, is set to be decommissioned and possibly returned to a saltmarsh because it cannot be defended against rising sea levels. Yet the council says there is no funding to either resettle residents or pay for an equity-release scheme to allow homeowners to move. Thomas, 67, who has been busy organising meetings for alarmed residents, says people in the village are getting on with life as best they can, but below the surface there is growing despair and anger. “There are a huge number who are feeling anxious. They are depressed. They are full of angst,” she says. “It is awful.” The villagers feel abandoned by the authorities. “I really want to see how this country is going to deal with its first so-called climate refugees because at the moment we are getting nothing.” Read more Badger Run Wildlife Rehab Sometimes a keystone species isn't "spectacular". Leather Chiton. Imagine having overlapping plates of armor. That’s exactly what a chiton uses to protect itself against predators. This leather chiton photographed here has eight of these articulated plates. The flexibility of these plates, combined with a relatively large sucking foot, allows the chiton to cling very tightly to rock surfaces, and maintain a foothold in even the roughest surf.

The Quail Trail Schedule has been revised, effective Monday 10/08/2018. The reason for the changes is to aid young adults living in Chiloquin (and surrounding areas) traveling to/from Eagle Ridge High School in Klamath Falls. The students depend on the Quail to get to/from school. Now students may ride Route 2 to get to school, and catch Route 4 to go home after school – cutting their commute time by roughly 4 hours!

Sage Community School – Sage Community School is looking for community volunteers interested in assisting Sage Community School. See Board Meeting info under Monthly Meetings. If you are interested in offering your services as a volunteer in any way, please contact Anna Fowler 541.783.2533~Office [email protected]

Klamath Humane Society – volunteers needed at the Humane Society. We are getting started on our disaster program and need volunteers in the Chiloquin area. We also are looking for people who can write grants. Foster homes for dogs and cats are always needed. For more information, contact the shelter at 882-1119 or e-mail [email protected]. Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) – a statewide program working with children K-3 during school hours. Each volunteer works one-on-one with a child for ½ hour, helping them read (or reading to the youngest). We always need volunteers, whether scheduled every week or merely as a substitute reader when the regular reader is unable to attend. Call the number below for an application or fill out an on-line application at www.getsmartoregon.org. It will be the most rewarding hour you ever volunteer! Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Evening volunteer: The library is open until 6pm on Tuesdays, Weds and Thursdays. We would really appreciate a volunteer who could help us out with closing tasks for the last hour or so on these days (especially Tuesdays). 2. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. 3. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 4. Honor collections: These are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 5. Help with sorting donations. 6. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.

If you are signed up but are not receiving the Chiloquin News, it’s because your email provider has either blocked it or sent it to spam. If it has just gone to spam, and you can find it there, then you can use that email to set up an email filter, telling your provider to never send it to spam. If it has been blocked, that is more difficult. When it is blocked it never even gets to your account. CenturyLink is notorious for blocking the Chiloquin News, but other providers have also done so. You could try calling CenturyLink to ask that it be ‘unblocked’ – good luck with that! Otherwise you could open a gmail account to receive the Chiloquin News, or you could read it at the online archive at https://chiloquinnews.wordpress.com/ As for the reason it is being blocked, it’s because it goes out to a large number of people and email providers tend to label those emails as spam. When the mail is blocked I can’t even reply to your queries. If the words ‘Chiloquin News’ appear anywhere in the text, the message will be blocked. The mail is doomed right from the start because it’s coming from the address [email protected]. Please let me know if you have not been receiving the newsletter. I would like to keep track. Thanks, Joan
