Consider this thought: “If it’s a mistake to add the burden of the past to the weight of the present, it’s a worse mistake to burden the present with the future.”

I offer this thought because today is Holy Family Sunday, and many of you are parents, and parents have a tendency to worry — whether you have younger kids, or older kids who are married and on their own. The truth of the matter is that things rarely happen as we expect them to happen. And that truth applies to the way your children’s lives can unfold. Now, this is not necessarily a bad thing, but there are some situations where parents can start to blame themselves for decisions that their children make that might seem to go against everything you taught them. And there is so much more out there in the world to create con-fusion and uncertainty. Sometimes parents are not able to provide the best environment for their children because of problems that the parents themselves have to deal with, or perhaps the exact opposite is the case, where they gave them everything they could ever need or want and still their children chose a path that was not good for themselves. Today is not a day where you are to evaluate your “performance” as a parent. And we are dif-ferent people than we were many years ago. I would suggest that today is a day where you ask the newborn Child in the manger to watch over your family. Today is a day to pray that there might be healing and forgiveness someday, it doesn’t have to be this minute. Ask the Lord to protect your family in the days ahead. If there is any regret in your heart for the things of the past, those are also the things you place in the hands of Christ and do your best to let go. Let me leave you with another thought. I found this to be very helpful in my own life: “The things that have to be done must be done, and for the rest we must not allow ourselves to become overwhelmed with thousands of petty fears and worries, because the clinging to these things really say that we have no confidence in God. Everything will turn out all right.

So, what is our moral duty? To reclaim large areas of peace in ourselves — more and more peace, and to reflect it towards others. And the more peace there is in us, the more peace there will also be in our homes and in our troubled world.” This is a good thought, I think, as we begin the new year 2021 — peace in our heart, peace in our homes, peace in our world.

The Octave of Christmas We have joyfully celebrated the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord and now we continue to rejoice for the next eight days, the Octave of Christmas.

An octave extends the celebration of a solemnity for eight days. Octave is Latin for ‘eighth’ and the “octave day” of Christmas is January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation, always on New Year’s Day.

Octaves have been a part of Christian worship since the fourth century and play an important role in the liturgical year of the Church. Historically, there were more Octaves, but the Church now celebrates only two: Christmas and Easter, as they are seen as worthy of a liturgical octave. Consider them as jubilee.

During the Octave of Christmas all the readings and prayers during the celebra-tion of Mass are related to the birth of Christ, beginning with the Nativity of the

Lord, December 25, and concluding on the Feast of Mary, Mother of God, January 1. The other principal feast days of the Octave of Christmas are St. Stephen, the Holy Family and the Holy Innocents.

Liturgically, the Church walks us through the Gospel’s infancy narrative. This is encouragement to take these mysteries to prayer and reflect on Jesus, the wonders of his birth, and a fuller understanding of who Jesus is to each of us. Celebrated together as an octave, these feasts help propel us forward in our comprehension of Christ. On the final day of the Christmas Octave, we get an answer as to who this Child is: He is God. We rejoice in this together and honor Mary, the sacred God-bearer.

December 26: The Feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr after the death and resurrection of the Lord. December 27: The Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. (When December 27 is not an Octave Sunday, the Feast of St. John the Evangelist is celebrated.) December 28: The Feast of the Holy Innocents. The group of young children that were born around the time of Christ that were murdered by Herod seeking to kill Christ. They were the first to sacrifice their lives after the birth of Christ and for his sake. January 1: Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Christ was the flesh and blood of Mary who thus holds the title of Mother of God. Sources: thecatholicconnection.org/Fr. Matthew Long; BlessedIsShe.com

The Twelve Days of Christmas (Christmastide) Traditionally, the twelve days of Christmas begin on December 26 and end on January 6, the traditional date of Epiphany. Many Chris-tians continue to celebrate Twelfth Night with special foods and traditions. Since 1970, Roman Catholics have celebrated Epiphany on the first Sunday after the Octave of Christmas (that is, the first Sunday after January 1). This means that there aren’t twelve nights. However, the twelve days of Christmas and Twelfth Night are not official litur-gical celebrations, but more of a popular tradition.

The Christmas Season (for Catholics)

Roman Catholics (and some other Christians) mark the end of the liturgical Christmas season with the celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which falls on the Sunday after the Feast of the Epiphany. Ordinary Time begins the day after the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

The Martyrdom of St. Stephen — December 26th

Stephen was among those chosen by the apostles to be one of the seven deacons appointed in charge of the distribution of alms to the faithful and especially the widows. But as things turned out, he also had a charism for preaching. Perhaps it was because of his witness that deacons later took on the ministry of preaching. Acts of the Apostles says that Stephen was a man filled with grace and power, who worked great wonders among the people. Certain Jews, mem-bers of the Synagogue of Roman Freedmen, debated with Stephen, but proved no match for the wisdom and spirit with which he spoke. They persuaded others to make the charge of blasphemy against him. He was seized and carried before the Sanhedrin.

In his speech, Stephen recalled God’s guid-ance through Israel’s history, as well as Israel’s idolatry and disobedience. He then claimed that his persecutors were showing this same spirit. “…you always oppose the Holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors” (Acts 7:51b).

Stephen’s speech brought anger from the crowd. “But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glo-ry of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and he said, ‘Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ …They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. …As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ …‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them’” (Acts 7:55-56, 58a, 59, 60b).

St. Thomas Becket — December 29th

St. Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury was assassinated in his cathedral on December 29, 1170 because of his opposition to his former close friend, King Henry II of England.

Thomas Becket was introduced to King Henry and they soon became close friends. This led to Becket being named as the king’s Chancellor. When the then-current Archbishop died, Henry immediately saw the opportunity to increase his influence over the Church by naming his loyal advisor to the highest ecclesiastical post in the

land. Henry petitioned the Pope who agreed (steps were quickly taken to elevate him to Archbish-op). But, if King Henry believed that by having "his man" in the top post of the Church, he could easily impose his will upon this powerful religious institution, he was sadly mistaken. Becket's allegiance shift-ed from the court to the Church inspiring him to take a stand against his king. They came to quarrel over the rights of the Church in England. Henry fled to France for some time but eventually returned to England. A group of Henry’s knights, incited by their king’s anger at Becket, killed him at the altar of Canterbury Cathedral. Devotion to him spread like wildfire. Many miracles were attributed to him and he was officially proclaimed a saint within three years.

The Feast of the Holy Innocents — December 28th This feast commemorates the children who died when Herod commanded that all the children in the town of Bethlehem two years old and younger be killed in hopes to eliminate the chance of a Jewish King.

When Christ was born, Herod reigned at Jerusalem; Herod was well known for his cruelty. He was not of the Jewish nation and was hated by the Jews and feared that they would dethrone him. He had several illustrious persons executed, whom he suspected of aspiring to the throne. Meanwhile it happened that the three Magi or Kings from the East came to Jerusalem, to find and adore the new-born King, who had been announced to them by a star. They asked: “Where is he, that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to adore him.”

The news of this spread through the whole city, until it reached the King. To escape the danger he felt, he called the chief priests and scribes together, and inquired of them where the Messiah should be born. They answered: “In Bethlehem, according to the Prophets.” Herod then had the three wise men brought to court, he asked when and where the star had appeared to them then advised them to go to Bethlehem. When they found the new-born child they were to return and inform him, as he wished to go and adore the child also. His intent was to kill the child.

The Magi, guided by the star, went to Bethlehem, found and adored the divine Child. They offered gold, frankincense and myrrh. Having finished their devotion, they intended, to follow king Herod’s wish. An angel, however, appeared to them in their sleep and admonished them not to return to Jerusalem, but to go into their own country by another way; which they accordingly did. When Herod perceived that they had deluded him, he was filled with rage. His ambition led him to an unprece-dented act of cruelty: He sought to murder all the male children, in and around Bethlehem, that were two years of age or younger. This act was executed amidst the despairing shrieks of the parents, especially the mothers. Yet the divine Child was already in security. The Gospel tells us: “behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt,* and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.” Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod.” Excerpts from: reginamag.org / Fr. Francis Xavier Weninger
