THE HOLY MASS THE POETRY CORNER

LINENS & COVERINGS FOR THE SACRED

VESSELS

It is strictly prescribed that only pure linen should be used about the altar in accordance with a venerable custom which owes its origin to the fact that the Body of Our

Lord was wrapped in linen before being laid in the sepulchre. Linen is emblematic of sincerity and purity of heart. The linens used in connection with the sacred vessels are:

The Corporal. The corporal is a square of white linen cloth, about fifteen by fifteen inches, upon which the Sacred Host and chalice rest dur-ing Holy Mass, and upon which the monstrance is placed at Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. It derives its name from the Latin word corpus, meaning body, because the Body of Our Lord rests upon it. The corporal receives a special blessing. When not in use, it is folded and placed in the burse.

The Pall. The pall, a piece of lin-en about six or seven inches square, usually stiffened with cardboard, is used as a protection over the chalice. The pall, like the corporal, is blessed.

The Purificator. The purificator, a small, oblong piece of white linen, is draped over the chalice at the be-ginning and again at the end of Holy Mass. It is used for cleansing the in-terior of the chalice and the paten and to dry the priests’ fingers. The purificator is washed by a person in Sacred Orders before being entrust-ed to lay persons for laundering. This linen need not be blessed.

The Burse. The burse is a small square case or pouch, formed by joining two square pieces of materi-al stiffed with cardboard, with an opening at one side. It is used as a container for the corporal, and is placed upon the chalice as the last of its coverings. It is made of the same material and corresponds in color to the vestment which the priest wears, and bears the figure of a cross or other sacred image.

When the priest distributes Holy Communion outside of the time of Holy Mass he brings with him a burse containing a corporal, where-on to place the ciborium while it rests on the altar.

The Chalice Veil. The chalice veil is a large, square cloth, of the same material and color as the vestments of the priest, used as a covering for the chalice. It may have a figure of a cross on the portion which is draped in front of the chal-ice. At the beginning and at the completion of Holy Mass, the chalice veil is draped over the chalice; dur-ing Holy Mass, while not in use, it is folded and laid aside.

PRAYER FOR A HOLY CHRISTMAS

All hail, most lovely, most holy, most amiable and loving Infant Je-sus, King of my soul. Ah, blessed be the hour in which Thy holy Mother will give Thee to me as my ransom. O most beautiful above the children of men! Give me grace to prepare to receive Thee worthi-ly on the glorious feast of Thy Na-tivity.

Give me a heart all glowing with holy desires, love, gratitude and ardent zeal to correspond with the designs which bring Thee on

earth. Give me the true spirit of Thy holy Nativity, the spirit of hu-mility, silence, detachment, docili-ty, meekness and true and ardent charity. Give me the grace daily to advance in devotion to Thy blessed Infancy, and faithfully to persevere in the discharge of all my duties, in spite of the allure-ments of Satan, and the scoffings of the world.

Bless me, then, divine Infant, as Thou didst bless the humble and simple shepherds, watching over their flocks; and let me ever remember that it is to the humble, simple and faithful, Thou dost most willingly communicate Thy choicest gifts. Amen.

CRUCIBLE

The things that we no longer want, we toss

Half carelessly to God—a tar-nished ring

One has outgrown, a last year’s fashion string

Of part gold beads, a broken silver cross

Set with small rubies minus all their gloss,

Three coffee spoons, a watch without a spring,

A buckle that has lost its mate. We fling

These in the melting pot: They’re not much loss.

Unworthy offerings to the

Godhead! Yet In fire they shall be cleansed

till they become The sacred cup and paten of

the Priest. Ah, Lord, Who gives our bau-

bles value, let Thy love transform our ugli-

ness till some Of Thine own beauty robe us

for the Feast. - Paula Kurth

FOR KATIE

ST. JOSEPH’S CHRISTMAS

Not envied, not desired, Only admired:

A girl on this will thrive

As on no thing alive.

And such was God’s rare plan For Mary’s man.

He watched his loved one

Power hour after hour,

With footstep caused no fear In angel-anxious ear,

Gave her husband’s praise

In naught but gaze:

The exquisite adulation Of contemplation

That lets a fact reveal

Itself as real,

And, in Our Lady’s case, As full of grace.

He must have marveled most

When of the Holy Ghost

Her little Son who shivered At dawn was delivered.

He must have feared and feared

And hid behind his beard

When was not his life He welcomed from his wife.

And his bride’s Babe and Lord

Adored and adored;

At Christ’s Nativity, St. Joseph, I love thee.

~ Dedicated with love to Katie this Christmas

Living Memory

Land, lead my feet Along the path of memory, And as I walk in the light

Of the star Let me gather lambs,

Little lambs, Lost sheep,

Even angry innkeepers Who may want to see

What daily care Has cause to turn away.

(This lost cause will be our gain.)

The land unfolds an Infant King. I saw Him crowned

Along the way. I saw His mother weep.

But now He sleeps And she receives

All who come To see and know and weep and

pray.
