Dear Parishioners, Ever been in a single-engine Cessna? During my first flight, I had a sudden feeling of extreme vulnerabil-ity—the only thing preventing a 1500 foot fall to the ground was a piece of tin. Between life and death a piece of tin! My feet rested lightly on the floorboard. Vulnerability—there’s lots to be afraid of. But, we need to manage our fears and keep them ra-tional: The plane is purposefully designed to be light-weight, but well-strong enough to safely carry all the souls on board, therefore, do not be afraid. Fear of being wounded. Some wounds we are able to avoid by praying for safety, praying for peace, praying for everything we need. God wants us to ask him for these things. Inescapable wounds. Even our Lord seemed to fear his wounding: “My soul is sorrowful, even unto death.” How did he deal with this extreme stress? He asked his friends to help, then he prayed to God: “My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt,” (Mt 26:39). The innocent Son of God did not escape being wounded; he did not escape the fear it caused. But, he rose above both by consenting to the will of the Father. He consented because he was confident in the Father’s love. How do we know this? Barely an hour before his agony, during the last supper, he prayed thus: “Father, I will that where I am, they also … may be with me: that they may see my glory … because thou hast loved me before the creation of the world,” (Jn 17:24). His confidence is based on the love he received since before the creation of the world. Is he asking for escape? “I will that where I am, they also may be with me.” What does this have to do with Christmas?! When the angel Gabriel came he said the babe shall be call “Emmanuel, which means ‘God with us,’” (Mt 1:23). God is with us. God is with us, in our vulnerability, in our woundedness, in our fear. He is with us to manage our fears. He is with us to avoid the fearful things. He is with us when the wounds are unavoidable. God is with us. If our house burns down, or Uncle George’s cancer becomes inoperable, we can remain calm and
