Faith Direct During Advent we prepare our minds and
hearts for the real meaning of Christmas, the birth of our
Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. As we reflect on the
upcoming Christmas season, it is likely that we will be busy
with parties and family gatherings. Perhaps even a trip out
of town to visit friends. With all of those joyous
celebrations, we might miss Mass. That’s where eGiving

“WinWin” with DSF
Our parish is proud to be an integral part of the
Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston. The many Pastoral
services and programs have blessed our Mary Queen
community in every aspect of Catholic faithlife. Become a
part of the great support we offer to our Archbishop,
Cardinal DiNardo, through the annual Diocesan Services
Fund (DSF). Our goal of $165,000 is reflective of our
stewardship and we have only 390 pledges from a parish
of over 2900 Catholic households. To pledge a
contribution is a “winwin” benefit, as Mary Queen will be
rewarded with a 50% rebate from any contributions over
and above our goal. DSF pledge cards and envelopes are
located near the Welcome Desk in the narthex of the
church. Let’s strive for 1000 households pledging $365.
That is only $1.00 per day for a multitude of blessings and
benefits to our local Church of GalvestonHouston.

Being and Doing Amen
(4
th
Sunday of Advent: Isaiah 7:1014; Romans 1:17;
Matthew 1:1824)

In the verses preceding our first reading, we learn that
Judah’s enemies were joining forces to attack
Jerusalem. At this news, “the heart of the king and
heart of the people trembled.” So God sent Isaiah to
King Ahaz to tell him, “Take care you remain calm and
do not fear... Unless your faith is firm, you shall not be
firm!”

This last sentence translates the same Hebrew verb,
“Aman,” twice. The is the source of the word, Amen,
which we use, for example, to express our firm faith in
the Eucharist as we receive Communion. Depending on
context and grammatical form, “Aman” can be
translated in a dozen or more ways.

Taking certain liberties, I propose a translation that you
will never find elsewhere in print: “If you are not Amen,
you cannot Amen.” In the first part, as a noun, it
indicates faith in all its dimensions; the verb in the
second part indicates standing fast. King Ahaz was not
Amen. Unwilling to trust God’s promise, he refused to
seek a sign.

St. Paul writes that, as an Apostle, he was sent to bring
about “the obedience of faith.” He was Amen himself
and wanted all to be Amen.

The story of Joseph is an Amen story of faith. “He did
as the angel of the Lord had commanded him.”

Mary at La Salette called for the obedience of faith: “If
my people refuse to submit,” she said, and, later, “if
they are converted.” She who had said, “I am the
handmaid of the Lord,” found among her people an
attitude that responded No to the things of God, not
Amen.

Our Gospel today recounts “how the birth of Jesus
Christ came about.” It is a wondrous story, requiring the
obedience of faith. That is true of every aspect of Jesus’
life.

At La Salette the Virgin Mother displays her crucified
Son on her breast. It is especially in his passion that he
is, as he is called in Revelation 3: 14, “The Amen, the
faithful and true witness.”

I pray that the coming feast of his birth will lead us all
not only to say Amen, but also to be Amen and to do
Amen, always and everywhere, like Mary, like Paul, like
Jesus himself.

4th Sunday of Advent
December 22, 2019

Each Advent season, we
prepare to welcome Jesus
into the inns and stables of
our hearts. But Jesus’
coming wasn’t welcomed
by everyone with choirs of
angels. For St. Joseph, the
first coming of Jesus was a
bit more complicated.
“When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but
before they lived together, she was found with child
through the Holy Spirit.” For Joseph, opening his heart
(and home) to Jesus meant, at best, appearing to all the
world like a man who had impregnated his wife out of
wedlock. At worst, he appeared a cuckold, raising the
child of another man. God doesn’t always appear the way
we expect.

For some of us, the birth of Christ is a bit relationally
complicated. Perhaps over the past few months, a loved
one has died. This Christmas, you’re taking it upon
yourself to keep up the traditions and hold the family
together. Welcoming Jesus means welcoming grief.
Perhaps it’s a difficult relative (or two or three) and it’s all
you can do to bite your tongue and swallow your pride
while they’re under your roof. Welcoming Jesus means
welcoming strife, discord, and tension.

Yet “do not be afraid,” the angel says. Do not be afraid.
Why? Because we celebrate the birth of “Emmanuel,
which means ‘God is with us.’” Before Jesus’ earthly
ministry would begin, Jesus would lose his father,
Joseph. God is with us in our grief. Wherever Jesus went,
he stirred up controversy and faced down challenging
personalities. God is with us in our stress. The trick is,
like Joseph, to allow supernatural grace to prevail.
Joseph was a good man, filled with natural virtue in that
he didn’t want to “expose [Mary] to shame.” Yet he was
prepared to “divorce her quietly” all the same. Our natural
abilities only take us so far. Where is receiving Jesus
complicated this Christmas season? Are you relying on
your own strength to get you through, or are you truly
ready to accept the grace of Emmanuel, God with us?

Parish Family Christmas Tree
The beautiful Christmas tree in the narthex of
the church is a fitting symbol of our holiday
season and an opportunity to share your gifts
as families in our parish community. Please
feel free to bring an ornament with your family
name on it, to decorate the tree, which is
designated as our "Parish Family Christmas
Tree". We invite all our parishioners and friends who have
not donated an ornament in the past, to donate one
ornament per family to our Christmas tree.
The Mary Queen Nursery will be closed
on Sunday, December 29th, to allow the
staff to enjoy the holidays with their
families.
Oplatki Christmas Tradition

The tradition of the Oplatki originated in Poland during
Early Christian times. This Christmas Custom began with a
simple white wafer, baked from flour and water. The
wafers are wonderfully designed to display Christmas
images, such as the Nativity. The Oplatkiare enjoyed by
families, typically right before the Christmas Eve meal. The
entire family will gather around the table with the
Oplatek. Generally the eldest member of the family will
begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and
passing it to another family member with a blessing. This
blessing can simply consist of what you desire for your
loved one in the upcoming year whether it be good
health, success, or happiness. The purpose of this act is
primarily to express ones unconditional love and
forgiveness for each member of his or her family.

The significance of the Oplatki Christmas wafer is in that it
shadows the Eucharistic meal that Catholics participate in
at each Mass.Just as we share in the Eucharist as one
family in Christ and receive Christ’s love through the
Eucharist, the Oplatki allows for one’s immediate family to
come together and share the love they have for one
another.

The Oplatki tradition is one that is easy and fun to
introduce to the family at Christmas time. All it requires is a
simple wafer paired with love and affection and the
willingness to share it.This is a heartwarming tradition that
will complete your family’s time together during the
Christmas season.

The Oplatki wafers are available, while supplies last, at
the Welcome Desk in the Narthex of the Church and at
the Reception Desk in the Parish Center. The
suggested donation is $2.00 each.

Mary Queen Jubilee Fun Facts
December 22, 2019
Do you remember Christmas Eve 2004?
We had a White Christmas! The Houston
area saw snow for the first time on
Christmas Eve. Ever! In fact, this was the
first trace of snow reported since December
17, 1996! As Mass in the old church (now
La Salette Hall) couldn’t hold everyone, there was a
second Mass at the same time in the Parish Hall. When
parishioners were leaving Mass, imagine their surprise to
see a white blanket of snow covering the parking lot.
Merry Christmas to all!
The Mary Queen Woodworkers have been busy
with many projects. The most
exciting one is our newly completed
workshop located in the garage at
Mary’s House at the back of the
property.Anyone interested in wood
working is invited to join this unique
and meaningful new ministry. All
skill levels are welcome! The group meets each month at
the workshop on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 7:00
PM and the 1st and 3rd Saturdays at 9:00 AM.
