This week at the Center….. THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 14, 2014

The Third Sunday of Advent

JOY MORE THAN DISCIPLES Each of today’s four scriptural roles—disciple, prophet, apostle, herald—forms a facet of our life in Christ as we live it day by day. Isaiah tells us that a prophet is anointed, as we were anointed at our baptism in water and the Spirit, to bring glad tidings and to promote God’s reign of healing, justice, and peace. An apostle, like Paul, is one who is “sent.” Each of us, in his or her own way, is sent by Christ to be a voice of rejoicing, to encourage pro-phetic voices in the world, and to make sure that the work of the Spirit thrives. John the Baptist shows us the job of the herald, making the Lord’s way straight, announcing the coming of the Light of the world. Today we also hear from Mary, model disciple. Her song, the Magnificat, shows us the world we must be-lieve in and work for: one in which God is praised, where God’s favor is bestowed on the humble, where the hungry are filled and the rich are sent away empty, a world that continues to know and rejoice in the mercy of God that lasts for all ages. I Believe In Miracles By Mary Martha Primerano Last Sunday after church I was approached by a sweet home-less fellow named Chad (not his real name), and he asked me what my last name was. When I said, “Primerano” he whipped out a TX Drivers License and other important cards belong-ing to me! I was shocked to see these items now in my hand be-cause last summer on Thursday, Aug. 6th(to be exact) my wal-let was lost or stolen-whatever happened to it, I’m still not sure. I decided then not to let this steal my joy and took it in stride cancelling all my cards. There was one thing I couldn’t fix. The fearful thoughts of identity theft that tormented my mind. I finally took it to God and reminded Him of His promise found in Psalm 37: 23-24. The steps of the godly are directed by the Lord and He delights in every detail of their lives -You see I have been meditating on this for the past year. Really letting it soak into my spirit. So in childlike faith I simply had a talk with God and said something like this. “Look God I don’t like the idea of all my important cards with my identity being out there. I don’t know where that wallet could be - but one thing I do know is that You know where it’s at. I understand that you love me as your child so I’m asking you to please get these cards back. Amen“. So that takes us to this last Sun-day, Nov. 23 with God sending Chad our homeless friend delivering all of my cards to me. He explained how he was walk-ing along the highway feeder road and saw all these items on the ground and picked up only the important looking cards. Some may ask (as I did). Why did it take so long? Is it any wonder that I would receive my cards on the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving? To remember that God has me in the palm of His hand, and to keep a thankful heart. Eph. 5:20 At all times and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

EN MEDIO DE VOSOTROS HAY UNO

QUE NO CONOCÉIS

Jn 1,6-8.19-28 En el Evangelio de hoy me llama la atención la forma en que Juan Bautista anuncia a los judíos la presencia de Jesús oculto entre ellos: “En medio de vosotros hay uno que no conocéis”. Nadie se ha fijado en Él. Hace treinta años que Jesús vive entre los judíos. Lo han visto, lo han acompañado, se han codeado con Él muchas veces. Lo han visto trabajar, orar, hablar. Han recibido su visita, han utilizado sus servicios de carpintero. Sin embargo, a lo largo de treinta años nadie se ha fijado en Él ¡Cuánta oposición, cuánta ignorancia frente a Dios debe haber en el fondo del corazón humano, en el fondo de nuestros cora-zones, para hacernos tan insensibles, tan impermeables a lo divino!. Pero esta ignorancia, este menosprecio, no se refiere solo a la parte oculta de su vida. Después de tres años de vida pública, de predicaciones, de milagros, Jesús tiene que dirigir a sus apóstoles testigos de todos sus actos, confidentes de todos sus pensamientos, este reproche: “Hace tanto tiempo que es-toy con vosotros y no me habéis conocido todavía”. Es que la presencia de Dios es y será siempre, necesariamen-te, una presencia oculta. Incluso después de la resurrección, en las apariciones a los suyos, la presencia de Cristo sigue sien-do misteriosa. Tampoco entonces nadie lo reconoce. María Magdalena cree que se trata del jardinero; los discípulos de Emaús tienen sus ojos cerrados, de modo que no lo reconocen; los apóstoles después de la pesca milagrosa, ven ante ellos a un extraño y no se atreven a preguntarle quién es. Dios, aunque se acerque un poco más, aunque se manifieste un po-co más y se haga más evidente, seguirá siendo para los hom-bres un Dios desconocido, un Dios sorprendente, un Dios menospreciado. Con frecuencia nos lamentamos de la lejanía de Dios, nos imaginamos el gozo que ha de producirnos su presencia. Creemos que es eso lo que nos falta para que pueda cambiar verdaderamente nuestra vida. Y sin embargo sabemos que los contemporáneos de Jesús, cuya suerte envidiamos, no supieron tampoco reconocerlo. Si Jesús hubiera vivido a nues-tro lado desde el comienzo de nuestra existencia, ¿lo ha-bríamos reconocido en nuestros corazones, por medio de una fe viva? Y resulta que Jesús sigue estando presente entre no-sotros: Yo estoy con vosotros todos los días, hasta el final de los tiempos. No os dejaré huérfanos. El mundo no me conocerá, pero vosotros sí me conoceréis. Aparentemente, Jesús es siem-pre el mismo. Él puede parecerse a cualquiera. Para nosotros, un pobre se parece a todo el mundo; sin embargo Cristo está oculto en ese pobre. Para nosotros, un sacerdote se parece a todo el mundo. Una hostia consagrada se parece a cualquier pedazo de pan. Un santo nos parece igual a todo el mundo. Y sin embargo, tenemos que creer que bajo todos estos rostros se esconde el mismo Dios. Bajo todas estas apariencias, es el Señor quien vive, obra, habla y desea manifestarse entre no-sotros. La verdad de la Encarnación consiste en que Dios se solidariza

“ME ALEGRO CON MI DIOS ” con los hombres. A partir de la Encarnación vale: lo que se hace a los hombres, se le hace a Dios; estamos tan cerca de Él, como de cualquiera de nuestros vecinos. Desde la Encarnación nues-tro vecino es el Dios al alcance de nosotros. Si Dios estuviera en su cielo, podríamos estar tranquilos, podríamos odiar a nuestros prójimos, podríamos prescindir de ellos, quedarnos toda la vida indiferentes a sus problemas. Pero si Dios no está en su cielo, si Dios ha venido a vivir entre nosotros, entonces tenemos que tener mucho cuidado. Un Dios encarnado nos exige buscarlo, salir a su encuentro, reconocerlo en el rostro del hermano. Un Dios encarnado en el prójimo nos obliga a respetarlo, a no herir-lo, a no criticarlo, ni atropellarlo. Nos parece que a nuestro al-rededor no hay más que hombres, llenos de defectos y lim-itaciones. Y en verdad es Dios mismo que está en medio de no-sotros, aunque no lo reconozcamos. ¿Qué mujer cree que va a encontrar a Dios en su marido? No es posible; lo conoce demasiado bien, sabe lo que vale y lo que no vale. Y sin embargo conocemos la palabra de San Pablo: “Esposas, re-spetad a vuestros maridos, como si se tratara del Señor” (Ef 5,22). ¿Y qué marido reconoce a Dios en su esposa? “Maridos, amad a vuestra mujer como Cristo ama a su Iglesia” (Ef 5,25), nos recuerda San Pablo en la misma carta a los efesios. Y así Dios vive en cada ser humano, esperando que lo descubra-mos para empezar a creer en Él y en su presencia. Y así Cristo sale, día a día, a nuestro encuentro en cada hermano. Queridos hermanos, nadie ve a Dios, nadie se encuentra con Él sin el deseo sincero de verlo. Él no puede darse a conocer más que a aquellos que tienen hambre y sed de Él. Y es esa santa curiosidad, esa inquietud y ese interés, lo que seguramente des-pertaban entre sus contemporáneos las palabras del Bautista: “En medio de vosotros hay uno que no conocéis”. Y es esa también la sorpresa, el desvelo y el afán que tienen que suscitar entre nosotros. Escuchémosle, dejémonos alertar por sus palabras, miremos a nuestro alrededor, busquemos a Aquel que está presente entre nosotros, oculto en medio de nosotros. ¡Qué así sea!
