Advent Reconciliation Monday "Prepare the Way of the Lord” Isaiah 40:3 St. John-Visitation Parish will be joining other parishes throughout the Archdiocese of New York in offering opportunities for individual confessions from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday December 21st.

In accordance with Archdiocesan health guidelines presently in effect requiring social distancing of 6 feet between confessor and penitent in a ventilated space that does not allow use of confessionals and the Reconciliation room, confessions will be heard at the side shrine altars in the upper church. One may enter the upper church by either the door entrance near parish rectory or by the walkway next to the Spuyten Duyvil Pre-School.

Come and celebrate the sacrament of God’s love, mercy, and forgiveness to prepare for the upcoming Christmas celebration.

The St. John-Visitation Parish Staff extends to you and yours our prayerful best wishes for a Blessed Christmas. May we reflect upon the true meaning of Christmas that it will inspire us to live in the joy, hope, peace, and promise in celebrating the “life that was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4-5) These verses from the Prologue of Gospel of St. John offer the metaphor of darkness and its uncertainty that we have encountered with the onset of the global pandemic. Since March, everyone has needed to learn ways to make great personal sacrifices that has profoundly changed the way we live, work, study, socialize, and worship. Wearing masks, social distancing, shelter in place, virtual meetings, limited or no physical contact with others, etc. have become the norm. Also, over the past months we have experienced racial tensions and the accompanying social and civil unrest in our city and throughout the nation along with recent political campaigns that have highlighted the divisiveness in our country. The Vatican’s release of The McCarrick Report shows the corruption and scandal

among the Catholic Church’s hierarchy that serves as reminder of the institutional church’s sinfulness and humanity. The pandemic’s financial impact upon households, the educational challenges and struggles that many families have encountered with on-line and remote learning, the inability to visit relatives and loved ones in senior care facilities, the staggering number of those who have died from the coronavirus, including parishioners, relatives, and friends that we know are other examples of the darkness many of us have encountered in 2020.

In these difficult and trying times facing our world, nation, and church, may the true light of Jesus Christ and the Gospel message to dispel the darkness in our midst and enlighten our hearts to live as people of joyful hope walking in the light of the Lord. May we continue to pray for better and brighter days in the coming year ahead. Fr. Christmas Flowers Specially marked envelopes are available in the church for those who wish to donate with the upcoming decoration of both the upper and lower church for Christmas with flowers and poinsettias. Hour Children Thanks You Many thanks for your generous response of gift cards, new toys, and new clothing to our parish Christmas charity drive to support Hour Children. Church Seating: Please Be Considerate The limited church seating capacity and the configuration to accommodate the seating of individuals, two persons, and households with four members do not allow choosing where one desires to sit in the church at weekend parish Masses. Individuals who insist on sitting in locations designated for two persons or households are being inconsiderate and selfish; likewise, who arrive

after Mass has begun and walk up to sit in the front part of the church create worship distractions for those who came on time.

Please follow the directions of parish staff/greeter/usher for seating at weekend parish and Christmas Masses. Unfortunately, the changes and personal inconveniences caused by the pandemic’s restrictive health guidelines have come realities for our parish’s worship life. Además, en los últimos meses hemos experimentado tensiones raciales y los disturbios sociales y civiles que las acompañan en nuestra ciudad y en todo el país, junto con campañas políticas recientes que han resaltado la división en nuestro país. La publicación del Informe McCarrick por parte del Vaticano muestra la corrupción y el escándalo entre la jerarquía de la Iglesia Católica que sirve como recordatorio de la pecaminosidad y humanidad de la iglesia institucional.
