One Saint each week HOLY INNOCENTS-Matthew 2:1-18 tells us that Herod became furious when he learned that the Magi didn’t inform him about the child, so he “ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under.” But before this happened, an angel appeared to Saint Joseph informing him that he was to take Mary and Jesus and flee to Egypt. This rage of the envy, pride and egotism of Herod against the new born King, is inspired by the rage of devil against the God of the universe. This hate is repeated every time there are persecutions against Christ and the Christians following Christ’s message of love from the beginning of the Church. They, because of the free offering of their lives to die out of love for Christ, have been the Holy Martyrs of the Church. Fernando Rielo believed that the Holy Innocents were martyrs because, although those children were not aware of that they were offering their lives to Christ, if they were able to know this, they, for sure, would protect the Child Jesus, such that they can indeed be con-sidered martyrs. He also said that we should extend this death of the Holy Innocents today who are massacred by the scourge of abortion. It means that aborted children are also Holy innocents, martyrs of the egotism and sin of their fathers, as Herod did in Jesus’ time, when the mothers cry in Rama (as in Matthew 2:18).

An Arab scientist, Ibn al-Haytham, known in Europe as Alhacén, created in the eleventh century the theoretical basis for this invention with his study of the human cornea and the effects of light rays on mirrors and lenses. His books were translated into Latin in the thirteenth century and fueled a widespread interest in optics and their practical applications. Thus appeared the "reading stones", flat-convex (semi-spherical) lenses that were used in a magnifying glass mode and that had the precedent of the glasses. In 1306, a recognized domain in a sermon in Florence: "Not even more than twenty years ago the art of making glasses was found, which make it look good, which is one of the best and most necessary arts that the world has, "I am a little who found [...] I saw the one who first found and did it, and I spoke with him." Therefore, the invention is about 1286. Another news of the time mentioned a monk from Pisa (Italy) called Alessandro della Spina, who died in 1313, who was able to redo everything he had to think. Continuation ( From the Heart of our Heavenly Father by Fernando Rielo) …Out of the Father, only could produce in our hearts an immense and inexhaustible sadness, because of the filial fear which attracts us with a extraordinary ambition. It is like zealously and fine smaling which gives us quick sense of what is worthy or not convenient for living in holiness in order we reject it immediately. It is like a spiritual instinct, it is not a reason judgment. It is an act of the Holy Spirit in the soul of whom they have been prepared for. Let us follow the Father and we will have happiness as the world could not give us; a supernatural happiness which could face all our human goals and ideals of human beings. How it could be this supernatural happiness? It is a happiness that fills our hearts with affliction for our heavenly Father, because the only thing that we desire we cannot have in the fulness…even if its a little sadness, it gave us enough strength to accomplish any apostolic effort and overcome any difficulty. This is a mystical sadness which is united with a deep joy in do everything out of love, a “being plus” of love… Christ was sad in some moments although He taught us the joy of holiness is looking at the model of our Heavenly Father ( Saint Mat. 5:48; Saint Luk 6:36), a joy (S. John 17:13) as same as the peace which He is giving us, that doesn't belong to this world (San Jn 14:27), also Saint Paul expressed the same ( 2 Cor 7:4)… it is bigger that all the joys of this world and people who is looking at him/herself or this world cannot understand.

Book of Isaiah 7:10-14; Letter to the Romans 1:1-7; Saint Matthew 1:18-24.

After all it was only a dream

Not all dreaming is the same. Dreams can be funny, frightening, sad or strange. As much as dreams

may contain aspects of everyday, routine life, dreaming is also a state in which we contend with ex-

traordinary experiences.

There are nightmares, recurring dreams, and lucid dreams…Dreams have been the subject of phi-

losophers, artists, writers, scientists, and therapists. Like the wonderful diversity of dreams, there is

a diversity in thinking about dreams. Why do we dream? Do our dreams have meaning? We can also

ask, why should not God use dreams to communicate with us?

Joseph listened to the message from God told to him in a dream. He could have neglected that dream

saying it is just an ordinary dream of a confused mind. Yet he responded with faith. He rose above

his confusion and fear. He did not know how the story was going to end other than knowing that this child was going to save his people from

their sins.

But he must have already seen God’s hand at work in his life and in the life of people around him, causing him to trust God’s message. He

believed that God is with us. Saint Joseph’s faith is indeed a model for us all. What we need to ensure is that we do not place obstacles and

limits and ways as to how He is to enter into our lives. Some of us find the ordinary ways of God’s coming, God’s presence and God’s action

among us too simple to be true.

Let us bear in mind that, in Israel, the Messiah was expected to drop suddenly from the skies, full-grown in all his divine power. His landing

place, of course, was no other than the Temple mount. This explains why Satan tempted Jesus by proposing that he jump down from the pin-

nacle of the temple. The Jews found it hard to reconcile these expectations with the reality of this man Jesus whom they knew to be born and

raised in their midst: We know where this man is from; but when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from (Jn 7:27).

Joseph did as the angel of the Lord commanded him. These words should be inspirational to all of us. One dream was enough for St.

Joseph. He only needed to know that Mary's amazing mission, and his own, came from God, without the need to know all the consequences

or to measure the risks accurately and in detail.

In today’s Gospel, the angel's message to Joseph begins by saying: Do not be afraid.

Fear is an unpleasant, invasive and paralyzing experience. It could seize our thoughts, control our actions and weaken our resolve. If there is

something that can overcome fear, it would be love: For there is no fear in love; perfect love casts out fear (1 Jn 4:18).

Fears are of various types, and they affect us in different ways. Yet when recognized and confronted, they empower us. Yes, God uses dreams,

but also fears, to make us strong, to bring us closer to Him and helps us to continue our efforts to repent, to forgive others and to deal with

difficult people.

We could be troubled by fears, doubts and uncertainties of the future. But what Joseph did for Mary and Jesus is a testimony to the greatness

of love and the power of faith and hope. It is also a testament of one man whose selfless gesture enabled the Messiah to fulfill the Father’s

plan for our salvation.

Not only for believers, but for all, life is unpredictable and uncertain. Just as we think things are going on well, we face new challenges. Just

as we think there is no way out of our problems, suddenly, a new opportunity arises. That was what happened to Joseph in his betrothal to

Mary. Sometimes you have to repent of having your life too well-planned. Planning is a good thing. Goal-setting is a good thing. But if our

own plans begin to stand in the way of God’s plans for us, then we have begun to move from prudence to idolatry.

Sometimes, when you are confronted with the surprising action of God, you have to repent of doing things the way they have always been

done and thinking that faithfulness to God is always obvious. In fact, it is about the deepest purification, the purification of our spirit, which

desires to be free, also to liberate itself from God. This is what Psalm 139 proclaims: Where shall I go from your spirit and flee from your

presence? If I ascend to Heaven, you are there. If I go to my underground, you are there.

This is called Transverberative Purification in our Mystical Examination. It has little to do with our sins. Rather, it represents a true collision

between our generosity and the form of generosity that the Holy Spirit demands of us. This is described by a form of negative contempla-

tion of God (to understand that the image I had of God's will for me was incomplete), abhorrence of myself and of God (because I see

the distance between His plans and mine) and segregation (my soul is not my spirit).

Joseph did not expect anything particularly out of the ordinary to happen in his selfless life. He was familiar with the circumstances of his

life. It was perfectly reasonable for him to expect to get married, settle down, have children, work hard in his craft, and grow old in the same

town in which he grew up. All this in the presence of God. Perfectly reasonable.

But God had other plans. Plans that were beyond any reasonable expectation. Today’s Readings teach us that God is in the mystery of our

history, He is in control and He knows what He is doing. We must not fear the unknown but simply trust and rely on Him, especially when

we honestly believe we have done everything possible.

There was a priest who was one day addressing a group of fathers and he proposed St. Joseph as a model for them as head of their families.

At that, one of the participants said: Joseph’s situation was totally different from mine. He was a saint. His wife was sinless. And his

child was the son of God. I am no saint. My wife is not sinless and my child isn’t the son of God.

Without batting an eyelid, the priest responded: Did your son, when he was 12, leave home for three days and you didn’t know where he

was? Were you ever awakened in the middle of the night and urged to flee from the imminent threat of your innocent child’s assassina-

tion? Have you ever walked for several days to go to another country with your family so your son would be free from harm?

Saint Joseph’s life was definitely not easy, but because of his unwavering faith in God he was able to do a seemingly impossible task.

The First Reading teaches us that, contrary to what we may think, God, in His love and mercy, will give us His sign even though we do not

want to listen to Him. He will send people and events to remind us of our sins and to show his presence, making sure that he keeps his

promise to accompany us until the end of time. God sent Isaiah to help King Ahaz discern and His plan for him. He was told to ask the

Lord for a sign but he refused. He knew that if he were to ask for a sign he would have to follow the way of God. He did not want to listen

to God's voice. instead of trusting in God, he trusted in himself. Against his will, God gave him a sign through Isaiah: Behold, the virgin is

with child and bears a son and calls his name Emmanuel.

The prophecy of Isaiah was double. The first part of the sign given by him became immediately true: the son of Ahaz was conceived and

born of his young wife. He became the sign of God’s presence among his people. He was called Hezekiah. The title Emmanuel, God is with

us, could be rightly applied to him: He was a good king, which gave continuity to the dynasty and nobody ousted him, but he was not the

exceptional king that Israel expected. For this reason, the people waited for another king, a son of David who would fully fulfill the proph-

ecy. In today’s Gospel Matthew points him out: He is the son of the virgin Mary.

On this Sunday we are called to silence our incessant minds, fretting over various problems, screaming out numerous instruc-

tions and solutions, so that we may listen again to the only voice that matters. With the assurance that God would not abandon us, even in

the darkest and most arid moments of our lives, we can look fear and paralysis directly in the eye and choose to trust Him over and over

again. God is not asleep or indifferent to what is going on in the world or in our lives. He might seem slow to act but He has everything

under His charge and the divine providence knows when and how to act. This is why we have to make time for the Word of God in our

lives. Listening and looking: listening for the voice of God, looking for the signs of his presence in our lives.

Our challenge now is to trust His presence in our life so that we may be part of His victory. Joseph was confused, as we often are, but he

trusted God's mysterious ways and found incredible blessing in what he had not planned. Christmas is the feast that celebrates God's love

and goodness. There could hardly be a better way to prepare for Christmas on this last Sunday of Advent than to imitate Joseph in his will-

ingness to be obedient and hopeful at those times when life does not seem to make sense.

The angel’s explanation of why Joseph was to accept Mary into his home would have been hard for Joseph to understand. Furthermore,

the command to take Mary into his house was certainly understandable, but was also short on the details. Exactly what was he supposed to

tell his neighbors? How would he deal with the skepticism of his close relatives about this wonderful event? He had to trust that God

would provide good answers to all of those questions when the need arose. At the moment of decision, he had to make his choice in great

uncertainty about the future, trusting only in God’s loving kindness.

We too often face times when we feel uncertain about the way ahead, and we can learn from Saint Joseph to approach such situations with

meditation and prayer and openness to God’s guidance, however that may come to us. We will probably not be in possession of all the facts

when the moment for decision comes, and we need to trust that God has our best interest at heart and will lead us in the way we need to

go.

A look and a begging to St. Joseph when we find ourselves in that sort of a situation will surely help. We are called to imitate Joseph in

faith and in trust, even if it seems to us that our role is of little or no relevance. In spite of everything, this role is indispensable and the

Kingdom of Heaven would not be the same if we are not faithful to our modest contribution.

When we celebrate the virginity of Mary, we rejoice because we contemplate what God has done in her and believe in the

victory of life even where only signs of death are seen.

The term virgin in the Bible assumes a very spiritual meaning: the person who loves with an undivided heart. The unfaithfulness of Israel

is likened to prostitution (Jer 5:7). Its contamination with idols is considered adultery, a division of the heart between God, the one hus-

band, and the idols of the nations, her lovers (Hos 2).

Translated into our spiritual life, this represents the violation of the Spirit of the Gospel, when in a more or less subtle way we try to har-

monize authentic love with our worldly way of loving. The virginity is the symbol of total love for our Heavenly Father. Mary has certainly

realized to perfection this ideal of virginity.

de sueños, existe una gran diversidad en la forma de entender los sueños. ¿Por qué soñamos?

¿Tienen sentido nuestros sueños? También podemos preguntarnos, ¿por qué no podría Dios

usar los sueños para comunicarse con nosotros?

San José recibió el mensaje de Dios en un sueño. Podría haber despreciado ese sueño, juzgando

que era sólo el sueño ordinario de una mente confundida. Sin embargo, respondió con fe. Se elevó por encima de su confusión y su miedo.

No sabía cómo iba a terminar la historia, aparte de comprender que este niño iba a salvar a su pueblo de sus pecados.

Tengamos presente que Israel esperaba que el Mesías llegara repentinamente de los cielos, lleno de todo su poder divino. Su lugar de des-

censo, por supuesto, no era otro que el monte del Templo. Esto explica por qué Satanás tentó a Jesús proponiéndole que saltase del piná-

culo del templo. A los judíos les costaba conciliar estas expectativas con la realidad de este hombre, Jesús, de quien sabían que había naci-

do y crecido en medio de ellos: Nosotros sabemos de dónde viene este hombre; en cambio, cuando venga el Mesías, nadie sabrá de dónde

viene (Jn 7: 27).

José hizo lo que el ángel del Señor le ordenó. Estas palabras deberían servir de inspiración a todos nosotros. Un sueño fue suficien-

te para San José. Sólo necesitaba saber que la asombrosa misión de María, y la suya propia, venía de Dios, sin necesidad de conocer todas

las consecuencias o de medir los riesgos con precisión y en detalle.

En el Evangelio de hoy, el mensaje del ángel a José comienza diciendo: No tengas miedo.

El miedo es una experiencia desagradable, invasiva y paralizante. Puede apoderarse de nuestros pensamientos, controlar nuestras accio-

nes y debilitar nuestra determinación. Si hay algo que puede superar el miedo, es el amor: Donde hay amor no hay temor; pues el amor

perfecto expulsa el temor (1 Jn 4, 18).

Hay miedos de muchas clases, y nos afectan de diferentes maneras. Sin embargo, cuando los reconocemos y les hacemos frente, nos hacen

fuertes. Sí, Dios usa los sueños, pero también los miedos, para hacernos fuertes, para acercarnos a Él y ayudarnos a continuar nuestro es-

fuerzo para arrepentirnos, perdonar a otros y tratar con gente difícil.

Podemos estar preocupados por los miedos, dudas e incertidumbres del futuro. Pero lo que José hizo por María y Jesús es un testimonio

de la grandeza del amor y del poder de la fe y la esperanza. También es un testamento de un hombre cuyo gesto desinteresado permitió al

Mesías cumplir el plan del Padre para nuestra salvación.

No sólo para los creyentes, sino para cualquier persona, la vida es impredecible e incierta. En el momento que pensamos que las cosas van

bien, súbitamente tenemos que enfrentarnos a nuevos retos. Cuando pensamos que no hay solución para nuestros problemas, de repente

surge una nueva oportunidad. Eso fue lo que le sucedió a José en su compromiso con María. A veces hemos que arrepentirnos de tener la

vida demasiado bien planeada. La planificación es algo bueno. Fijar metas es algo bueno. Pero si nuestros propios planes comienzan a

obstaculizar los planes de Dios para con nosotros, entonces hemos comenzado a pasar de la prudencia a la idolatría.

A veces, cuando nos enfrentamos a la sorprendente acción de Dios, tenemos que arrepentirnos de hacer las cosas como siempre las hemos

hecho y de pensar que la fidelidad a Dios es siempre obvia. De hecho, se trata de la purificación más profunda, la purificación de nuestro

espíritu, que desea ser libre, para también liberarse de Dios. Esto es lo que proclama el Salmo 139: A dónde podría ir lejos de tu espíritu?

¿A dónde huiría lejos de tu presencia? Si yo subiera a las alturas de los cielos, allí estás tú; y si bajara a las profundidades de la tierra,

también estás allí.

Esto se llama Purificación Transverberativa en nuestro Examen Místico. Tiene poco que ver con nuestros pecados. Más bien, representa

una verdadera colisión entre nuestra generosidad y la forma de generosidad que el Espíritu Santo exige de nosotros. Esto queda descrito

por una forma de contemplación negativa de Dios (por comprender que era incompleta la imagen que yo tenía de la voluntad de

Dios para mí), aborrecimiento de mí mismo y de Dios (porque veo la distancia entre sus planes y los míos) y segregación (mi al-

ma no es mi espíritu).

José no esperaba que sucediera nada fuera de lo común en su generosa vida. Conocía las circunstancias de su existencia. Era perfectamen-

te razonable para él esperar casarse, establecerse, tener hijos, trabajar duro en su oficio y envejecer en la misma ciudad en la que creció.

Todo esto en la presencia de Dios. Perfectamente razonable.

Pero Dios tenía otros planes. Planes que estaban más allá de cualquier expectativa razonable. Las Lecturas de hoy nos enseñan que Dios

está en el misterio de nuestra historia, tiene el control y sabe lo que hace. No debemos temer lo desconocido, sino simplemente confiar y

acogernos a Él, especialmente cuando honestamente creemos que hemos hecho todo lo posible.

Un sacerdote se dirigía un día a un grupo de padres y propuso a San José como modelo de cabeza de familia para ellos. En ese momento,

uno de los participantes dijo: La situación de José era totalmente diferente a la mía. Era un santo. Su esposa no tenía pecado. Y su hijo

era el hijo de Dios. Yo no soy un santo. Mi esposa no está libre de pecado y mi hijo no es el hijo de Dios.

Sin pestañear, el sacerdote respondió: ¿Su hijo, cuando tenía 12 años, salió de casa durante tres días y usted no sabía dónde estaba?

¿Alguna vez se despertó en medio de la noche y se le dijo que huyese de la amenaza inminente del asesinato de su hijo inocente? ¿Alguna

vez ha caminado por varios días para ir a otro país con su familia para que su hijo esté libre de todo daño?

La vida de San José no fue fácil, pero gracias a su inquebrantable fe en Dios pudo realizar una tarea aparentemente imposible.

La Primera Lectura nos enseña que, contrariamente a lo que podamos pensar, Dios, en su amor y misericordia, nos da una señal, aunque

no queramos escucharle. Él utiliza personas y eventos para recordarnos nuestros pecados y para mostrar su presencia, asegurándose de

cumplir su promesa de acompañarnos hasta el fin de los tiempos. Dios envió a Isaías para ayudar al rey Ajaz a discernir el plan que tenía

para él. Se le dijo que le pidiera al Señor una señal, pero se negó. Sabía que si pedía una señal tendría que seguir el camino de Dios. No

quería escuchar la voz divina. En vez de confiar en Él, confiaba en sí mismo. Contra su voluntad, Dios le dio una señal a través de Isaías:

He aquí que la joven está embarazada y dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamará con el nombre de Emmanuel.

La profecía de Isaías era doble. La primera parte del signo dado por él se hizo inmediatamente realidad: el hijo de Ajaz fue concebido y

nació de su joven esposa. Se convirtió en el signo de la presencia de Dios entre su pueblo. Se llamaba Ezequías. El título de Emmanuel,

Dios está con nosotros, podría aplicarse adecuadamente a él: Era un buen rey, que dio continuidad a la dinastía y nadie lo destituyó, pero

no era el rey excepcional que Israel anhelaba. Por esta razón, el pueblo esperaba a otro rey, un hijo de David que cumpliría plenamente la

profecía. En el Evangelio de hoy, Mateo lo señala: Es el hijo de la virgen María.

En este domingo se nos invita a silenciar nuestras mentes incansables, preocupadas por diversos problemas, gritando numero-

sas instrucciones y soluciones, para que podamos volver a escuchar la única voz que importa. Con la seguridad de que Dios no nos abando-

nará Incluso en los momentos más oscuros y áridos de nuestra vida, podemos mirar el miedo y la parálisis directamente a los ojos y elegir

confiar en Él una y otra vez. Dios no está dormido o indiferente a lo que sucede en el mundo o en nuestra vida. Puede parecer que actúa

con lentitud, pero tiene todo a su cargo y la providencia divina sabe cuándo y cómo actuar. Es por eso que tenemos que dedicar tiempo a la

Palabra de Dios en nuestra vida. Escuchar y mirar: escuchar la voz de Dios, mirar bien los signos de su presencia en nuestra vida.

Nuestro reto ahora es confiar en Su presencia en nuestra vida, para que podamos ser parte de Su victoria. José estaba confundido, como

nosotros a menudo lo estamos, pero confió en los misteriosos caminos de Dios y encontró una bendición increíble en algo que no había

planeado. La Navidad es la fiesta que celebra el amor y la bondad de Dios. No podría haber mejor manera de prepararse para la Navidad

en este último domingo de Adviento que imitar a José en su disposición a ser obediente y esperanzado en aquellos momentos en que la

vida parece no tener sentido.

La explicación del ángel de por qué José debería acoger a María en su casa, habría sido difícil de entender para José. Además, el mandato

de llevar a María a su casa era ciertamente comprensible, pero también era escaso en cuanto a los detalles. ¿Exactamente qué se suponía

que debía decirles a sus vecinos? ¿Cómo lidiaría con el escepticismo de sus parientes cercanos acerca de este maravilloso evento? Tenía

que confiar en que Dios daría buenas respuestas a todas esas preguntas cuando surgiera la necesidad. En el momento de la decisión, tuvo

que hacer su elección con gran incertidumbre sobre el futuro, confiando sólo en la bondad amorosa de Dios.

Con frecuencia, nosotros también vivimos momentos en los que nos sentimos inseguros sobre el camino a seguir, y podemos aprender de

San José a abordar estas situaciones con meditación, oración y apertura al plan de Dios, sea cual fuere la forma en que nos llegue. Proba-

blemente no estaremos en posesión de todos los hechos cuando llegue el momento de tomar una decisión, y necesitamos confiar en que

Dios tiene en el corazón nuestro mayor bien y nos guiará en el camino que necesitamos seguir.

Una mirada y una súplica a San José cuando nos encontremos en este tipo de situaciones seguramente nos servirá de gran ayuda. Estamos

llamados a imitar a José en la fe y en la confianza, aunque nos parezca que nuestro papel es poco o nada relevante. A pesar de todo, ese

papel es indispensable y el Reino de los Cielos no sería el mismo si no fuéramos fieles a nuestra modesta contribución.

Al celebrar la virginidad de María, nos regocijamos porque contemplamos lo que Dios ha hecho en Ella y creemos en la

victoria de la vida, aunque sólo se vean signos de muerte.

El término virgen en la Biblia tiene un significado muy espiritual: la persona que ama con un corazón no dividido. La infidelidad de Israel

se asemeja a la prostitución (Jer 5:7). Su contaminación con ídolos es considerada adulterio, una división del corazón entre Dios, el único

esposo, y los ídolos de las naciones, sus amantes (Oseas 2).

Traducido a nuestra vida espiritual, esto representa la violación del Espíritu del Evangelio, cuando de una manera más o menos sutil trata-

mos de armonizar el amor auténtico con nuestra manera mundana de amar. La virginidad es el símbolo del amor total por nuestro Padre

Celestial. María ha realizado a la perfección este ideal de virginidad.
