Chapter U Christmas

The Holiday season is upon us in full force. We’ve already celebrated Thanksgiving, shopped on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, in hopes of finding the perfect gift or deal for our family and friends. If you’re like me, at this point in life there are very few things that I need or want anymore. I’m much happier with just having family and friends over for some food, conversation, and fUn!! Our Chapter U family is a big part of the holiday season for us. This year’s Chapter Christmas party will be held at Montana Mike's Steakhouse (1153 Oasis St, New Braunfels, TX) on 9 Dec 2016 from 12:00 - 3:00 pm. Please put this date on your calendar, because you don't want to miss it. If you plan to attend (which I hope you do), we do have a couple of requests for you!! 1. If you plan to attend, please let me know. Montana Mike's asked that we send them a headcount of attendee's so they know how many servers to assign to our room. 2. Also, I've had a few folks ask me if the Prime Rib would be available to order on that day. The answer is "YES" but the restaurant would like to know in advance how many folks will be ordering this item. If you plan to order the "Prime Rib", please let me know and I'll let the restaurant know. 3. Our Fun will start with mingling, good conversation, and some Christmas music. 4. Each GWRRA member will be given 1 raffle ticket upon arrival. This ticket will be used for all of our Door Prize Drawings, except for the Christmas Cash drawing and Member Gift Exchange!! 5. This year we are doing a Food Drive to support the Randolph Area Christian Assistance Program (RACAP). Should you wish to participate, please bring (Non-perishable foods that can be used for the holidays). Each member donating food will receive 1 raffle ticket for each item donated, up to a maximum of 10 raffle tickets. 6. We are also be doing a Toy Donation in coordination with Kent Powersports. Each member choosing to participate by donating new toys (bring unwrapped new toy(s) for donation) will receive 1 raffle ticket for each item donated, up to a maximum of 10 raffle tickets. 7. There will be an "Ugliest Christmas Sweater" contest that you may choose to participate in. Each entry will receive 1 raffle ticket. Winner will receive a prize!! NOTE: To afford everyone an opportunity to win one of the many door prize items, each individual member can receive a maximum of 12 raffle tickets that will be used for the door prize drawings. 8. We will also be doing a Member Gift Exchange. Anyone that wishes to participate in this exchange is asked to bring a gift that costs between $15 - $20. Gift should be new and not profane. 9. Christmas Cash Drawing. This is the drawing that you have been buying tickets for all year long at our Chapter Gatherings. Hope you've bought enough tickets all ready, as tickets will not be sold at the party. You must present to win!!

10. Door Prizes. We will be drawing for lots of different prizes throughout the party. This is where all the tickets you receive for your participation will really come into play. Donna and I, along with all the Chapter U Team, hope to see everyone at the Christmas Party!!! Doors will open at 12:00 and the party will go until 3:00 pm or so. Come ready to eat and have some "Fun"!! As you know, Donna and I are stepping down as Chapter Directors this year. We want to say “Thank You” to all of the Chapter Staff and Members for making the last two years so FUN and enjoyable!! We ask that you continue the excellent support you’ve shown us with your new Chapter Directors and Leadership Team. “Thank You Chapter “U”!” for making it so easy to lead such an outstanding group of friends, who are only doing what they like to do – have FUN!!!!!

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! Safe Travels and we’ll see you on the

road in 2018!!

Hello Everyone!

This will be our last article as Chapter Assistant Directors. We can’t express how much fUn and enjoyment

we’ve had over the past few years (almost a decade) being involved in the leadership teams seeing the Chapter

grow and continue to prosper. We will be present but sitting on the sidelines watching the new leadership team

members take the helm, and lead the Chapter on to continued success.

Don’t be dazzled by the colors—follow these fall season riding tips Autumn is one of the best times to ride and experience the splendor of nature. There’s no better way to see the fall foliage than via a motorcycle ride through fields and forests. On a bike, you’re immersed in the ever-changing panorama of foliage colors—unobstructed by a car’s roof and its pillars. Even a convertible places a frame in your line of vision. On a motorcycle, you glide visually unrestricted through the majesty of the trees. Fall foliage season is very symbolic for us riders. It’s a yearly mile marker in our riding season. The swelter of late summer is gone, transformed into the delightful daytime warmth and cool nights of fall. The trees tell us that temperatures are about to fall, as the leaves flutter to the ground. And those fallen leaves look pretty on the ground. Who doesn’t remember the childhood joy of playing or hiding in leaves? Oh, those beautiful leaves are so pretty on the trees and yet so sneaky when on the ground.

Slip and fall—but that’s not all Wet leaves on the road can be as slippery as an oil slick. Watch for them, especially in corners. Cornering uses a good measure of your tire’s available traction. Wet leaves can suddenly take away the remaining traction and lead to a fall. Use caution when braking on wet leaves, as well. Wet leaves between a tire under braking loads and the road surface can cause the tire to lose traction and skid. Even with anti-lock brakes, caution is a good strategy. Wet leaves are also a hazard under your boots when stopping or maneuvering in a parking lot.

Page 6: December, 2017 Volume12, Number 12 · In the United States, lightning routinely kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Only lightning can strike outside the storm

6

Fallen leaves, even when dry, present hazards. They can cover the paint lane markings on the road, concealing the lane size and turn directions. This is particularly dangerous at night when sight distance is shorter. Leaves piled along the side of the road can cover surface hazards like: open sewer grates, curbs, roadside rain gullies, and road or vehicle debris. Piles of fallen leaves can conceal many surface hazards at intersections, including: low-profile concrete dividers used for traffic calming, large, slippery preformed thermoplastic lane direction arrows and crosswalk markers, oil and antifreeze spills, and broken glass and debris from previous fender benders. Also, be sure to never park your motorcycle near piles of dry leaves. Hot exhaust pipes can cause a fire. Motorcycles that have catalytic converters are at an increased risk due to higher temperatures. And, please don’t ride through piles of leaves. Remember, a youngster could be playing in them!

I asked my granddaughter if she’d seen my newspaper. She told me that newspapers are old school and handed me her iPad. The fly didn’t stand a chance. ____________________ A woman rolled an elderly man in a wheelchair into the reception area of a doctor’s office. As she went to the front desk, the man sat there, alone and silent. Then a boy climbed off his mother’s lap and walked over to the wheelchair. Placing his hand on the man’s, the boy said, “I know how you feel. My mom makes me ride in the stroller too.” ____________________ And elderly patient said to his doctor, “My leg aches all the time.” “That’s just old age,” the doctor replied. “Well, my other leg is exactly the same age, and it feels fine.” ____________________ I sent my picture to the Lonely-Hearts Club. Lightning is the MOST UNDERRATED weather hazard. On average, only floods kill more people. Lightning

is most often seen in thunderstorms. In fact, lightning is what makes thunderstorms. Lightning makes every single thunderstorm a potential killer. Forecasting when and where lightning will strike is not yet possible and most likely never will be.

In the United States, lightning routinely kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Only lightning can strike outside the storm itself, and is the first thunderstorm hazard to arrive and the last to leave and knows no boundaries.

Since lightning is so unpredictable no one can guarantee an individual or group absolute protection from lightning. However, knowing and following proven lightning safety guidelines can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death.

While no place is 100% safe from lightning, some places are much safer than others. Buildings that are NOT SAFE (even if they are "grounded") have exposed openings. Convertible vehicles offer no safety from lightning, even if the top is "up". Other vehicles, which are NOT SAFE during lightning storms, are those which have open cabs, such as golf carts, tractors, and construction equipment.

The safest location during a thunderstorm is inside a large enclosed structure with plumbing and electrical wiring. If lightning strikes the building, the plumbing and wiring will conduct the electricity better than a human body. If you are using any electrical appliances or plumbing fixtures (INCLUDING telephones and computers), and a storm is overhead, you are putting yourself at risk! If no buildings are available, then an enclosed metal vehicle such as an automobile, van, or school bus makes a decent alternative. If you are inside a vehicle, put the windows up, and avoid contact with any conducting paths leading to the outside of the vehicle.

Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from the area where it is raining and many people are unaware of how far lightning can strike from its parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance. Seek safe shelter immediately. Remember this lightning safety rule...When thunder roars, go indoors and stay there until 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. DON”T wait for the rain to start before seeking shelter, and don't leave shelter just because the rain has ended. There is NO SAFE PLACE outdoors during a lightning storm. If stuck outdoors on a highway, you could find a highway overpass and park the bike and get as high as possible from the road, high enough to be out of any water, on the embankment between the highway and the bottom of the bridge. At the same time, do not touch the metal of the bridge. You are trying to get away from metal and water conductors. Lightning can be as hot as 54,000°F (30,000°C), a temperature that is five times the surface of the sun! Water and metal are excellent conductors of electricity. The current from a lightning flash will easily travel for long distances. The average lightning bolt carries about 30,000 amps of charge, has 100 million volts of electric potential. These amounts can burn through ANY insulator (even the ceramic insulators on power lines!) Besides, the lightning bolt may just have traveled many miles through the atmosphere, which itself is a good insulator. Ride Safe, Ken & Connie Jordan, Chapter Educators

2017 GWRRA/Region H Ozarks Fall Foliage Tour

November 1-6, 2017

This tour was our second opportunity to participate in this event – a gathering together with other districts for fun and some

great “leaf peeping”.

This year’s event encompassed three official days. The first day was an optional day to arrive at Van Buren, Arkansas for a

day trip on the Arkansas/Missouri Railroad. The scenic trip was a three hour round trip train excursion from Van Buren to

Winslow. A large contingent of Region H members participated in the trip.

The three restored passenger cars were comfortable and carried us through the very beautiful countryside. We traversed

two elevated wooden train tressels, some two hundred feet high and in the tree tops. We also passed through a very long

hand dug mountain tunnel. Historic villages that still had businesses in operation were visible from the train as well.

At Winslow we did not disembark. The diesel engine simply disengaged and moved to the other end of the train for our

return trip. Our seat backs were “flipped” so we again would be facing forward for our return trip. That evening we met up

with Sal and Phylis Pesta and close to forty other Region H members for fun and a great dinner at Frank’s Italian Restaurant.

After dinner there was a parking lot assemblage of the 70 plus Region H members at the hotel to discuss the following day’s

rides. The groups were to leave on a staggered basis beginning at 8:00 am.

Our departure was delayed because of fog. We road in fog most of the day. The temperature and fog thickness varied

depending on our elevation and other variables. We rode several loop roads and the colors of the trees was magnificent,

very scenic!!

After a few more hours of the “twisties” we arrived at the “HUB Motorcycle Resort” on Scenic Highway 7. The HUB had

been upgraded since last year and we had a fridge, microwave, and television with seven channels. Sunset was beautiful

from our second floor balcony overlooking the colorful display of trees.

We departed the HUB Sunday at sunrise and ventured south on Scenic Highway 7 all the way to Arkadelphia where we

jumped onto Interstate 30 West passing through Texarkana and onto Atlanta, TX for the night.

Our last day was a 400 miler in unseasonable warm weather. We, of course, had taken our winter riding gear. We spent a

lot of time removing liners, taking off layers and opening vents in our jackets and pants. Our new “Hammond/Kendrick Trike”

functioned flawlessly on our maiden cross-country trip with it.

This will be our last newsletter article as COY. We have enjoyed the last year as COY and feel honored to have been

selected.

Best wishes to all for the coming year. May the comradery and fun continue!

Tux Chapter U Mascot

The following is a revised list for 2018 that Tux provided a few years back. During this season of giving,

let us take time to slow down and enjoy the simple things. May this wonderful time of the year touch your

heart in a special way. Tux and the Hendricks’ family wish you much happiness today and throughout

the New Year.

Tux's Christmas Wish List

Thanksgiving will be over when you are reading this, but I want to say I have enjoyed my

association with each member of Chapter "U" this year, and am looking forward to an eventful

year ahead. Enclosed is my Christmas Wish List.

1. A Merry Christmas, and a happy and prosperous New Year to each of "U" and all my web

footed friends.

2. A new trike, as pretty as can be. If I can't have a trike or motorcycle, I want an icicle.

3. 2018 Texas District Chapter of the Year for Chapter "U" - Repeat, Repeat!!

4. Pray for the unfortunate, for they are not on 2 or 3 wheels.

5. Round trip invitation to Knoxville, Tennessee for Wing Ding. Hint, hint, Sal and Phylis.

6. Big turnout on 9 December for the Chapter "U" Christmas Party at Montana Mike's

Steakhouse in New Braunfels, TX.

7. Bird free holiday dinner's - Tux doesn't want to be mistaken for a turkey.

8. Cold, winter nights versus hot, summer days!

9. Hooky rides that make you appreciate missing work. More brisk morning tours, Larry.

10. One year subscription to GWRRA.

11. DQ for everybody!!

12. Be safe, not sorry. Tux wants to ride with "U" next year.

13. Make sure your riding frequency has a Chapter "U" in it.

14. Participate, be involved and let's have a FUNtastic 2018!

Tux’s Wish List dictated to Tom Hendricks for publication.

“November Chapter U Activities”

Ride to Alamo Springs Cafe

4 November 2017

Some days just start out looking good, and with a little luck they just get better and better; today was

such a day. Woke up a little earlier than usual this morning, so I had plenty of time for my first cup of

coffee and a little news before I headed out to the garage and to do my pre-ride checks on the trike.

With windshield clean, tire pressures checked and all my turn and brake lights working, Donna and I

headed out to Kent Powersports to meet everyone for our ride to Alamo Springs Café. Lately it has

been cloudy with moisture hanging in the air in the early mornings and today was no different but it was

still 65 degrees and supposed to keep getting warmer all day long.

We had a good group show up for the ride. We had 8 bikes/trikes that belonged to Ed & Helen Smith,

Pat Wall, Pete Ryson, Tim Hendly, Larry Hammond, Bob & Helen Priester, Brad & Jill Severe

along with Donna & me. After a short route and safety brief, we all headed out toward our lunch

destination.

Page 18: December, 2017 Volume12, Number 12 · In the United States, lightning routinely kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Only lightning can strike outside the storm

18

As we road along, the moisture got a little heavier and started spotting our windshields but the

temperature was still great for riding. When we got to FM 473, heading towards Kendalia, we did have

to slow down a little as the roads were a little damp. We road FM 473 all the way to Old San Antonio Rd

or Old # 9 Hwy, whichever you might know it as, then headed north to our destination. It was a great 90

minute ride there!!

When we arrived, we found that we were the first ones there as the café didn’t open until 11:00 am but

the folks working there saw us arrive and went ahead and opened the doors for us to come on in.

Alamo Springs Café has been rated as one of the top 5 places in Texas for its burgers and I was ready

to eat. When we took a look at the menu, the first thing that jumped out at me was their burger

challenge. If you could eat their 6 patty burger it would be free, if not then the cost was $29.99. No one

from our group accepted this challenge but I sure would have liked to seen what it looked like when it

came out to the table. Our folks seemed to order up a little bit of everything they had on the menu but I

decided I wanted to try one of these burgers that I’d been hearing so much about. When our food

arrived and I saw my burger, I asked the waiter right then for a take home box. This thing was so big, I

didn’t think there was any way I was going to be able to eat it all right there. This food was great and I

actually did finish the whole thing.

Heading back towards the parking lot the sun had come out and all the clouds were gone for the day.

What a great day for riding with friends and eating some great food!!

Chapter U Gathering

November 15, 2017

Chapter U + “U” = FUN

The November Gathering of Chapter U was held on Wednesday evening 11/15/2017 at La Cabana

Restaurant in Cibolo. As always, the GWRRA motto of “Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge” was in

effect as the Members of Chapter U gathered.

Food and Fellowship began at 6:00 p.m. with the official business of Chapter U beginning at 7:00 p.m..

Chapter Director Steve Van Gilder brought the meeting to order by welcoming everyone that was

present and the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had 30 people in attendance this month that included 25 members and 5 guests.

Millie Kvapil and Phylis Pesta

Page 20: December, 2017 Volume12, Number 12 · In the United States, lightning routinely kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Only lightning can strike outside the storm

20

Steve started off the meeting by recognizing Chapter U members with Birthdays and Anniversaries in

November. Birthday’s included Donna Van Gilder on 11/9,

Helen Smith on 11/13, Rhonda Barta on 11/15, Ken Jordan and Sal Pesta on 11/17,

and Richard “Lucky” Carter on 11/18.

Wedding Bells rang in November for Bob & Helen Priester on 11/25 and

Sal & Phylis Pesta on 11/26.

Dinah Ryson’s name was drawn for the monthly membership prize but she wasn’t present to collect so

the money goes back in the kitty for next month. We’re now up to $30 so make sure you come to the

meetings for your chance to win.

Next was the monthly MEC contest, which this month was to make your best gobbler sound. Barbara

Gressler and Mike Harris tied for the honor so both collected 5 extra raffle tickets for drawings later.

Assistant Chapter Director Court Van Sickler reminded us all that our sponsor

Kent Motorsports in New Braunfels will be holding their “Holiday Open House” on

December 9th, from 2 pm until they close. This just happens to be the same day as our Chapter U

Christmas Party and is only about a mile away from Montana Mikes. So, if you’re planning to attend the

Chapter Christmas Party then make plans to support one of our awesome sponsors afterwards. The

folks at Kent Motorsports support us all year long so it’s a good time to stop by and say “Thanks” for all

they do for our Chapter.

Ken Jordan, Chapter U Educator, had some words of Safety for us. His reminder was to beware of the

Holidays and drivers that are not paying attention when we’re out on the Goldwing’s during the next few

weeks. The holiday season can be a lot of fun, but not if you’re in an accident. So remember that

everyone has their minds on other things this time of year, and be extra cautious if you’re out enjoying

our beautiful South Texas weather on your motorcycle during the Holiday Season.

While we were on the subject of Safety, Tim McKee shared a “Near Miss” story with us from the

Saturday of the “Elm Creek Fly In” ride. Tim rode to the “Fly In” on his own and came upon what

appeared to be a group of Motorcyclist’s with some sort of problem. While he was pulled over to the side

of the road to see if they needed assistance a pickup came up from behind him and narrowly missed

hitting him. He said it was so close that it took his right highway peg off of his bike. Needless to say, this

was a perfect example of what Ken Jordan had just talked to us about, a motorist not paying attention.

Thanks for sharing that story and the Safety Advise with the Chapter Tim, and we are really glad you

are safe and able to!

Tim McKee shares a harrowing “Near Miss” story.

Chapter MEC Tom Hendricks gave us a quick rundown on a couple of upcoming events including Kent

Powersports “Bike Night” at Brewingz on Walzem Road and a Lunch Ride to Bella Tavola Italian

Restaurant in Gonzales Texas on Saturday, November 18th.

Pat Kendrick gave us some details of their recent trip to the Region H Fall Foliage Ride in Arkansas

and Steve reviewed two local Chapter events that were held during the last few weeks, the Elm Creek

Fly In and a lunch ride to Alamo Springs Café.

With the year drawing to an end the upcoming calendar is a little light on rides but everyone is looking

forward to the Chapter U Christmas Party on December 9th, from 12 till 3 pm at Montana Mikes in New

Braunfels. Steve ran down some details of the party. Two important things to note are that members will

be paying for their own meal and will be able to order anything from the normal menu. However, if you

think you might want prime rib you need to let Steve know prior to the party so he can let the restaurant

know how many are planning to order it. It’s made to order!

There will be lots of Door Prizes, an Ugly Sweater Contest, a member Gift Exchange ($15 to $20 limit),

and much more. Don’t forget the Christmas Cash Drawing which is rumored to be up around $250.

Page 22: December, 2017 Volume12, Number 12 · In the United States, lightning routinely kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Only lightning can strike outside the storm

22

We will be supporting local Food and Toy drives so bring non-perishable food items and unwrapped

children’s Toys and get an extra prize ticket (up to 5) for each item you bring. Hope to see everyone

there!

As always, the finale of the evening was the prize raffle. Diane Van Sickler won a $25 Gift Card from

Kent Motorsports in New Braunfels.

The 20% winner of $21.00 was Debbie Hay.

The 30% winner of $33.00 was Mike Whiteside.

The grand prize winner of a $75.00 gift card from Kent Powersports in Selma was Mike Harris.

Congratulations to all!

Debbie Hay, Diane Van Sickler, and Mike Harris

Thanks to Millie Kvapil and Diane Van Sickler for the amazing desserts they made for the meeting

tonight.

And as always, a “Huge Thank You” to our sponsors Kent Powersports, Kent Motorsports and La

Cabana Restaurant for their continued and always appreciated support.

See you next month!

LUNCH RIDE TO LA BELLA TAVOLA

GONZALEZ, TEXAS

18 NOVEMBER 2017

It’s getting harder and harder in the San Antonio vicinity to find nice, scenic roads with pretty countryside without

having to fight traffic to get there. To add to that equation try finding a 1-2 hour ride that has mouthwatering food

to complement your ride, after which you can leisurely meander home while you digest your meal. That,

unfortunately is the price we pay to live near San Antonio, Texas. On the whole we are still fortunate to be able to

ride short distances, eat well and still be able to be away from the sights, smells and negatives of big city life.

As the designated Road Captain for the day’s activities, I pre-rode the route earlier in the week and sampled the

food at La Bella Tavola restaurant in Gonzalez, Texas. It is a nice 1.25-1.5 hours ride and I found the food to be

most enjoyable. Weather permitting I knew the Chapter U Riders would enjoy the ride, the scenery and the food

and hospitality of our designated dining establishment.

Page 24: December, 2017 Volume12, Number 12 · In the United States, lightning routinely kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Only lightning can strike outside the storm

24

Ready to ride!

I arrived at Kent Power Sports at approximately 8:40 for a scheduled departure of 9:15. Others who were looking

forward to the ride and lunch were Rick and Pat Kendrick, Bob and Helen Priest, Pete Ryson, Ed and Helen

Smith, Steve Van Gilder, Pat Wall, and Gary Ellis. After a few minutes of updating each other on our

Thanksgiving plans, I gave the safety briefing and went over the details of the day’s ride. The ride to Gonzalez

was uneventful although we glorified in the perfect Texas Fall weather and were thankful to have such a nice day

to be with friends, riding the back roads of Texas on our Gold Wings. Due to our later start many of us had

foregone breakfast so we were all pretty hungry by the time we arrived at the restaurant.

Page 25: December, 2017 Volume12, Number 12 · In the United States, lightning routinely kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Only lightning can strike outside the storm

25

La Bella Tavola has an extensive menu and if you liked Italian food you had a lot of choices. We ordered quickly

and the food brought to the table was piping hot. I will attest that the food is well worth the ride and that the

serving quantities are huge. We left our table full, satisfied and feeling we had received good value for our dollar.

We will return!

Leaving the restaurant, we mounted up and returned home via FM 2091, riding a pretty stretch of road through

Palmetto State Park and then on to I10 where some of us headed West and home while others continued their

ride toward Luling, Texas and then onward to home.

I believe everyone enjoyed our first lunch ride of the 2017 Fall/Winter season. It is always a pleasure to ride and

when you ride with good people, who appreciate the journey, good food and time in the great outdoors you have

some outstanding memories. I salute Mother Nature for the good weather, La Bella Tavola for the excellent lunch

and the Riders of Chapter U for a wonderful riding day among friends.

I hope to see you all back on the road in the near future. Ride safe, ride well, but above all, ride!

Recommended Riding Apparel for all Chapter U Rides:

1. Safety approved helmet.

2. Proper eye protection.

3. Boots, jeans or leather pants, riding suit, rain gear, gloves.

(Shorts and tennis shoes are not proper clothing when riding a

motorcycle. Do so at your own risk and preferably not on a

chapter ride.)

This protocol is only a suggestion and for your safety in an

activity that is inherently risky.
