The Monthly Celebratory Newsletter from County Upper

Dear parents, students, staff and governors,

In this edition, we celebrate the excellent work experience fortnight for year eleven, our music for Christmas, the prize-giving for last summer’s public examinations and earlydebating success, together with more sporting and academic achievements.

Christmas at County is synonymous with Charity and our sixth form led the

whole school in a huge range of activities which reflected the true meaning of the season together with our core values. We ended the term with our whole school assembly and, joined by guests and governors, we celebrated our many successes and revealed the charity total before pre-senting cheques to the representatives of this year’s chosen charities.

The revealing of the total was, as always, a very moving moment,

highlighting our very special County spirit and endorsing that we offer so much more than just an outstanding education.

As the year ends, I wish you all a joyful, peaceful Christmas and a very happy new year.

‘The Gratui-tree’This month our School Council involved every tutor group in producing a tree to be displayed in the main student foyer. In keeping with the spirit of the Christmas season, each group reflected on what they should be thankful for at County, putting their gratitude onto stars which the Council put onto the tree. We thank Mrs Middleditch and the School Council members for the initiative and for making us remember how much we have to be grateful for.

The ESU debating competitionOur debating society continues to thrive with an excellent debate each Friday evening. We also continue to enter all the main national competitions. The first one of the academic year is also the oldest and largest of the competitions for schools in England. The regional round of The English Speaking Union’s Schools’ Mace competition took place this month. We entered a year nine team who did exceptionally well competing against the other teams who were all comprised of sixth formers. In fact, Edie Huckel and Emily Jones did so well that they won and are safely through to the next round. Well done to both girls! We thank Mr Coleman, Mr Harrison, Miss Thomas and our sixth form officers for all the debating we enjoy.

All the Music for ChristmasIt remains a source of joy that almost fifteen per cent of our students took part in our Christmas

music this year and the breadth and depth of our extra-curricular provision remains exceptional. As the term ends we thank our Director of Music, Miss Green together with Mr Jermy, Mr Moore,

our peripatetic team and our Captains of Music for all we enjoy.

The Christmas ConcertOur main instrumental ensembles, smaller groups and renowned barbershop choir performed seasonal

favourites to a full hall. Alongside the wind band orchestra, string sinfonia and swing band, we were treated to ‘Santa’s Symphony’ from the woodwind ensemble, specially arranged by Mrs Brittain.

The student-led string trio, cello ensemble and sax quartet performed festive pieces and with everything from Corelli to Slade, the audience was ready to finish the evening with mulled wine and mince pies

served by the Parent Teacher Association to music from our jazz trio. We thank our PTA for rounding off the evening.

The Carol ServiceOur annual traditional service of nine lessons and carols in St Mary’s Church is always a highlight

of the Christmas season. The brass ensemble and our choirs provided a still point in a busy schedule and many in the congregation were very grateful for the sense of peace which the evening instilled.

We especially congratulate Imogen Chorlton for her opening solo in ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ and Samuel Hill for the Organ Voluntary at the end. We thank County parent, James Thomas, for playing

the organ and the Reverend Nick Alexander for taking the service and for his address. Along with readings from staff members, Mrs Bradfield and Mrs Walker; our Chair of Governors, Mr Cox

and Mrs Neale, we also thank the following students who each read one of the lessons:

Year 9: Anna MavroghenisYear 10: Joshua LooseYear 11: Katie Drayton

Head Students: Ben Amroota and Rebecca Severy

After our swing band performed at the Christmas Fayre and our chamber choir took part in the EACH carol service last month, various ensembles have continued to contribute to community events.

The Gala PantomimeIt has become a tradition that County provides the music for the annual gala performance of the pantomime at the Theatre Royal. Our function band and string trio entertained the specially invited guests and we were pleased to receive the following from the Development Manager at the Theatre, Emma Suckling:

The West Suffolk Youth ConcertThis Christmas the wind band and orchestra performed in St Mary’s Church. Alongside Christmas favourites and audience carols, there were pieces by Bizet and Grieg as well as a selection from ‘Les Miserables’. Open to all students who live or go to school in West Suffolk, we were proud that yet again a third of the orchestra and more than half of the band are from County Upper with some students in both ensembles. We congratulate Amy Aris, Chloe Ashman, Megan Brown, Anna Carnegie, Laura Clements, Lucy Curwen, Carl Davis, Krystina Davis, Bethany Diver, Jorge Draycott, Grace Giffin, Evan Grant, Caroline Hibbert, Katie Horne, Thomas Field, Benjamin Foreman, Tomaso Luongo, Jasmin Meara Wall, Katrina Miller, Thomas Pickersgill, Emma Le Poidevin, Harriet Smith-Pitt, Emma Stevens and section principals, Jonathan Hammond and Rebecca Severy.

We especially congratulate Olivia Humphreys who is this year’s Leader of the Orchestra and performed the role with poise, confidence and excellent musicianship.

More individual music success

n We congratulate Jack Emmerson in year thirteen who passed his rock school of music grade 8 bass guitar exam with merit and Stella Pusterla in year ten who has passed her Grade 5 music theorywith merit.

n Well done to Carl Davis in year eleven who has been acceptedfor music study at the Purcell School.

Music in the Community

“A huge thank you to you for yesterday. Your lovely students all played beautifully and were a real delight to have around. Could you pass on our thanks to them? We really appreciate them coming here on a Sunday to perform, as did all of our guests.

Many thanks again,”

Emma Suckling

We also congratulate Izzy Dolby, Nancy Griffith, Flo Hoggar, Stella Pusterla and Hannah Turpie who are dancing in this year’s pantomime, Dick Whittington.

Work Experience 2017In the month that the Department for Education provided new guidelines for careers and work experience, we were proud to celebrate another truly first-class fortnight for our year eleven students. The whole year

group represented County superbly in a wide range of placements and gained a huge amount from the experience. In a special assembly to make their success, we presented the annual prizes to:

The overall work experience prize for 2017 was awarded to Anastasia Shulgina for an outstanding two weeks at Tollgate Primary School.

Based on employers’ reports, the reports of the staff who visited the students on placement and the quality of their preparation, we also congratulate the large number of the year group

who received ‘highly commended’ certificates:

We thank all the businesses, universities, schools, charities and public sector employees who accepted our students for their placements. We are particularly grateful to Mrs Jolly and Mr Snelling who organised this year’s work experience with support from Ms Walters, the year eleven tutor team and all the staff who

undertook the visits to the placements.

The ILAB ProjectWe were delighted to be selected as the first school to take part in this initiative which culminated in a presentation evening this month. ILAB (Interactive Learning Across Boundaries) is run by a team of scientific researchers in conjunction with Cambridge University to give students an appreciation of the range of opportunities in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine). This is achieved by a six week, hands-on programme, rather than a one-off event. Twenty of our year nine and ten students were fortunate to follow a new course centred on the use of Robotics in Medical Technologies. Each session involved a mixture of theory, demonstrations, practical programming and circuit building. Students built their own medical technology device and presented their work to parents, governors and staff at the final session. The course also included a session at Cambridge Uni-versity where the students experienced a Virtual Reality system which enabled them to ‘walk’ through a cancer.

We thank the staff from ILAB and Hughes Hall, Cambridge together with Mr Balaam, Dr Hughes and Mrs Payne who provided this unique experience. We also congratulate all the students who made the very most of the experience, especially runners-up Rose Bainbridge and Caroline Hibbert and overall winners Kimberley Demoore and Rebecca Hayhurst. Finally, we thank Ryan Eagles and Nathaniel Lowis from the sixth form who assisted the staff.

Women of the Future ConferenceYear ten girls were fortunate to visit this conference at the John Innes Centre in Norwich. They were able to meet and talk with females who are successful in all areas of STEMM and hear about their career paths. The whole group behaved impeccably and were excellent ambassadors for County. They returned really inspired by the visit and we thank Dr Hanfrey, Miss Samuels and Miss Bilner for taking them.

The STEM Activity for December

Ben and the Quantum UniverseWe congratulate our Head Boy, Ben Amroota, who was selected for this special residential in Cambridge. Ben participated admirably in a series of seminars and practical workshops, enjoying time at The Cavendish Laboratory and making the very most of this experience. Well done, Ben!

The Sixth Form Mathematics Conference Our year twelve ‘A’ level Maths students wrote: “It was a cold early morning when we arrived at Redbridge ready to travel into Central London for the annual maths lectures. We were not disappointed as Simon Singh and Bobby Seagull amongst others gave superb talks and were truly inspiring. The snow on the journey home just added to the fun, a long day but well worth it. We thank Mr Penn for arranging it.”The group was a pleasure to take. Well done!

The World Class Schools Essay competition on democracyThis is open to students who attend accredited World Class Schools and as one of the first such schools to be given this official recognition we offered the opportunity to our students last summer. The results were announced this month and we were delighted that Millie Perry was one of nine students given an ‘honourable mention’ award at Churchill College, Cambridge. The essay title was “Churchill said, ‘Democracy is the worst form of government, except for others.’ How would you improve the democratic system in this country?” Before the presentation, Millie had a tour of the College and met Dr Jerry Toner who is Director of Studies in Classics and a highly regarding writer of the ‘Marcus Sidonius Falx Trilogy’. We congratulate Millie and thank Mr Kemp for accompanying her.

The Citizenship ConferenceA selection of our ‘A’ level Sociology students were fortunate to attend a conference alongside undergraduates and member of the public as part ofthe Edmund lecture series with the University of Suffolk. The lecture was ‘Prison Ethics and the Criminal Justice System’ by the speaker Sophie Ellis. Sophie is a research assistant at the Institute of Criminology, part of the University of Cambridge.

Some excellent history workCertificates were awarded this month to year nine students for their history homework project on the First World War. The year group made diaries reflecting the experiences of people who lived through it. The history staff were very impressed with the overall standard and found the judging very difficult. We especially congratulate those who gained certificates: Lizzie Barrell, Jessie Bream, Lauren Cocksedge, Caitlin Collins, Adam, Csontos, Alicia Doel, J-naya Fairley, Keira Forde, Aimee Francis, Sara Garcia-Leon, Euan Grant, Lola Huckel, Rosie Howes, James Ireland,Emily Jones, Ben Lowis, Sian Lewis, Dominic Smith,Frankie Smith-Pitt, Lauren Wake, Jacob White and Maddison Whitelaw

There is a consistency to our results and in 2017 we again topped Suffolk on the A*-C pass rate at ‘A’ level and our GCSE results on the challenging curriculum path comprising English, mathematics, science, history or geography and a modern foreign language were 16.5 percentage points above national, 19.5 percentage points above Suffolk and top of West Suffolk by a large margin.

This success is due to our determination to do the best by every individual, to our knowing our students very well and to the incredible programme of extra-curricular activities which, with superb teaching, ensures the all-round development of our students.

The ‘A’ level prizes were presented at a special certificate evening while the GCSE prizes were presented by our Chairman of Governors, Mr Cox, at our whole school assembly on the final afternoon of the term.

Major prizes were awarded as follows:

Eric’s national prizeEric Navarette in last year’s thirteen was presented with a special prize this month. Awarded three prizes nationally

for the practical component of the Product Design ‘A’ level last summer. Eric’s final piece was a special tripod made to a bespoke order from a local firm. Eric was commended for both his design and for the excellence of the

craftsmanship of the product. Congratulations, Eric, on a well-deserved place in the top three.

CHARITY 2017Our Thought for the Week for Charity 2017 was from Lord Jonathan Sacks who said “The meaning of a life is the difference we make to other people”.

Once again this Christmas our whole community has come together to give generously to our chosen charities. By giving to others, we have helped many lives, especially young lives, so much more in need of support than we can imagine. We have also demonstrated the true message of Christmas whilst also enjoying ourselves.

Congratulations to our sixth form students who have done a superb job of leading the school in a wide range of events incorporating new activities and old favourites. Above all, that very special spirit for which we are renowned has been evident throughout Charity 2017 and has confirmed the unique atmos-phere which underpins all our success.

We thank everyone and particularly acknowledge:

• The entire staff, who have given their whole-hearted support at this busy time;• The non-teaching staff for all their cake sales, which raised over £900;• Ourmusic department for the retiring collections at our Christmas Concert and Carol Service;• Miss Holton for organising the Charity Ice Skate for well over a hundred students from across the age range;• Mr Staples for producing a calendar from which all the profit was donated;• Mr McClean for all the technical support;• Mr Fisher and Mrs Stevens for guiding the sixth form through Charity 2017;• TherevueteamledbyAlice Grimwood, Harry Kriteman, Alice Leather, Tomaso Luongo, Josh Macrow, Ruby Wappett and Erin Willans De Frias.• Thisyear’sCharityteamofLouisa Baker, Ellen Burrows, Rhys Daltrey, Aoife Doherty, Ruby Doherty, Tia Eaton, Dylan Elomri, Charles Hall, Olivia Humphreys, Annabel Jackson, Katrina Miller, Izzy O’Farrell, Yasmin O’Farrell, Francesca Priestley, Jamie Reid, Lewis Savage, Peter Savill, Nicolas Searle, Bryony Smith, Mia Stevens, Jasmine Tebbit and Henry Upton.
