number of people receiving rather numerous gifts which might be better suited for, well, “white elephants”. I think we feel compelled to give gifts to people in our culture in order to fulfill an expected obligation instead of meet a real need or heartfelt desire. A simple Christmas with fewer gifts given, but more intentional effort on the part of the giver is just a better practice.

I also suggest these simple ideas to keep a simpler Christmas more in keeping with the traditions of the Church.

1) Give children simple treats on St. Nicholas Day (December 5th). St. Nicholas was the bishop of the see of Myra in today’s Turkey. (The legend goes that he provided coins for a dowry of three young maidens, placed, you guessed it, in socks hung to dry at the hearth.)

2) Make it a point of Keeping a family Advent wreath to prepare for the Nativity. Four simple candles in

purple or blue will do. (If you want to get complicated you can have a pink one on the third week) Each week a candle is lit and family can gather for prayer in expectation. Often our rush is to get to the celebration. Advent is just as important as wrapping your presents! You have to prepare for a proper feast.

3) Consider stretching the gift opening for all 12 days of Christmas. One family I know opens one gift per person each day. The 12 gifts to each vary from practical gifts like winter coats to fun surprises like games. Christmas isn’t over on December 26th, it continues until Epiphany on January 6th

Christmas –

Again! Can’t

We Do This a

Little Simpler???

Each year we se all sorts of calendars and notices reminding us of how many shopping days there was until Christmas. I admit that I let my eyes glaze over when I see these signs. When I worked in the retail world, I was constantly well aware that it is just a part of our capitalist obsession to create wealth. So each year, I would breathe a sigh of relief when the Christmas shopping season was only in the rear-view mirror.

So does that mean that I have a “Bah-Humbug” attitude toward Christmas? Not in the least. I do, however, think that it is entirely appropriate to return to the more traditional views concerning gift giving that have been part of our Christian heritage. It is important to note that at one time, Christmas had been outlawed and removed from the liturgical calendar in this country. The reason for that removal was abuse, and I daresay that for many of us who observe the wrong kind of Christmas, it is still a very real problem.

Perhaps simplicity is the name of the game. I know one person who always felt the need to give a gift to family in threes. This resulted in a

A Christmas Prayer by Max Lucado

Dear Jesus, It’s a good thing you were born at night. This world sure seems dark. I have a good eye for silver linings. But they seem dimmer lately. These killings, Lord. These children, Lord. Innocence violated. Raw evil demonstrated. The whole world seems on edge. Trigger-happy. Ticked off. We hear threats of chemical weapons and nuclear bombs. Are we one button-push away from annihilation? Your world seems a bit darker this Christmas. But you were born in the dark, right? You came at night. The shepherds were nightshift workers. The Wise Men followed a star. Your first cries were heard in the shadows. To see your face, Mary and Joseph needed a candle flame. It was dark. Dark with Herod’s jealousy. Dark with Roman oppression. Dark with poverty. Dark with violence. Herod went on a rampage, killing babies. Joseph took you and your mom into Egypt. You were an immigrant before you were a Nazarene. Oh, Lord Jesus, you entered the dark world of your day. Won’t you enter ours? We are weary of bloodshed. We, like the wise men, are looking for a star. We, like the shepherds, are kneeling at a manger. This Christmas, we ask you, heal us, help us, be born anew in us. Hopefully, Your Children

Christmas-Again! continued from page 2 Oh I know very few of you will consider changing your traditions. After all, it is a rather sacrosanct part of how we coexist in families. This I do know, I am far more enriched by simpler Christmases than complex, expensive ones. I also recall the initial meaning of Christmas was to welcome a newborn child who was himself the gift, with nothing else to give but himself. That is the real Christmas. It just can’t be bought or sold or even marketed at 50% off. It needs no costly presentation, just an open heart.

In Jesus, the reason for the season, Fr. Robert+
