Year 12 Retreat
In Term 4, the new Year 12 class of 2017 embarked on a journey and adventure to the gorgeous Gold Coast as a
part of our spiritual retreat. Despite having to wake up at an absurd hour of the morning in order to be on the
bus at school at 5:30, we managed as a grade to overcome this first speed hump in the adventure, by blaring out
our favourite tunes with enthusiasm on the way to the airport.
After arriving on the Gold Coast, we headed straight for Wet and Wild. This of course lived up to all expectations,
as the stunning weather, enthralling rides, overpriced food and end of the day ball games contributed to the
success of the time we spent there. After a long and loud bus ride up into North Tamborine Mountain, we arrived
at our living quarters.
Our first night ended with Father Peter’s insightful spiritual presentation, outlining what we can do as Christians
to help those in need around us and why we need to be grateful for the possessions we have. The main message
we were able to take from this was that people in the world today have absolutely nothing, and as servants of
God, we are called to do something about this.
Day 2 began with a bang...literally. At 6:30, the teachers were knocking on our doors to wake us up so we could
start the dreaded bus ride to Movie World. The encouragement we provided for our fellow peers and teachers
in order to overcome the stress of getting onto a ride, foreshadowed our talk after dinner. Miss Leodis spoke to
us about the positive and negative implications of stress in the HSC year, and the ways in which we can
manipulate our stress to motivate us into performing well.
On Day 3, we went to the place where dreams are made, visiting both Dreamworld and White Water World.
While the rides were exhilarating our stomachs were left up in the air. However, our hearts go out to the families
who lost loved ones in the unexpected tragedy which occurred in the week after our trip. Just like the other days
of our trip, the Gold Coast put on an excellent show of weather, and we were able to enjoy the refreshing water
park after our long day. To end this memorable day, we partook in a ‘onesie’ night where we participated in
various activities as teams with all our peers. As a result, through the laughs, failures and pasta tower successes,
we grew closer as a group.
By our final day, getting out of bed became a strenuous and resented task, as all we wanted to do was sleep.
Despite this, we were awoken by the beauty of the Church of St Anna where we had the opportunity to
participate in Divine Liturgy. The church committee was kind enough to invite us all for morning tea afterwards,
where we had the opportunity to talk to Father Romanos, and take selfies with him in order to mark this
memorable experience. To conclude our retreat, we were back on the bus for the short trip to Surfers’ Paradise
where we could relax by the beach for the rest of the afternoon, before our flight in the evening.
We would like to thank Ms Psimaris for organising such an unforgettable trip as well as Father Peter, Mr
Dialektakis and Ms Leodis for taking time away from their families and making this an experience that we will
never forget.

High Tea
On Friday, 11 November, St Euphemia College held a Breast Cancer Awareness High Tea in memory of Lynne
Viles who recently passed away. I would like to thank Ms Wassef and the Year 11 Hospitality class who worked
tirelessly to cater for the High Tea, Ms Iliasiewicz for donating one of the raffle hampers and cupcakes, as well
as Jenny Papadam one of our ex students who demonstrated Jamberry nails and donated her commission.
It was a successful afternoon whereby our High Tea, raffles, selling Pink Ribbon pens and pins, as well as Jamberry
sales allowed us to raise $1000.00, matching a further school contribution of $1000.00.

Year 7 Greek Excursion
On 31 October 2016, Year 7 participated at an excursion at the University of Sydney. (It looked like Hogwarts!)
We arrived and were separated into 3 groups with our tour guide. The supervisor took us around the Museum
and our first stop was a room full of artefacts. Year 7 got to feel and touch artefacts from places such as Pompeii,
Ancient Egypt, ancient Greece and Imperial Europe. Some of the artefacts were more than 2000 years old! When
we finished our activity on investigating Ancient artefacts, we headed up to the Nicholson Museum, which is a
part of Sydney University. The tour guide explained to us about the mummification of Ancient Egyptians and
several Gods and Goddesses. Our group even got to see Ancient Sarcophagus of Kings and Queens (Royalty)
Ancient Egyptian pharaohs, statues of Ancient Greece and Egyptians, an ancient skull and can optic jars. We then
headed off to see the Lego reconstruction of Pompeii and an Ancient Greek Goddess. Our grade had an amazing
time at this extraordinary place, and I’m sure we’ll visit sometime soon.
Later on we arrived at the Athenian Restaurant on Barrack Street, Sydney. As soon as we got there, the waiters
greeted us and we sat down with our friends. Soon after our Greek food was served. Our appetizers, tzatziki,
tarama and bread were on the table waiting for us to dig in. the entrées, lamb, chicken souvlaki with potatoes
and sweet potatoes then came10 minutes later. They were very tasty!
The main meal of the day was meatballs with rice. Our grade loved it! Our grade is extremely thank full and
would like to thank Ms Hirakis, Mr Theodoulou, Ms Prevezanos, Ms Roditis and a special thank you to Mr Hirakis.

St Euphemia Remembers
Along with similar services held throughout schools across the country and overseas, St Euphemia College held
a Commemorative Service marking Remembrance Day on Friday, 11 November 2016.
This is a significant annual event at the College which highlights the special importance of this day in
remembering those who have given their lives in numerous conflicts throughout history so we can enjoy the
freedoms we have today.
The Flanders Poppy is a flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personnel who have
died in war. During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated
battlefields of northern France and Belgium. All present at the Commemorative Service wore poppies which
were made by Year 7 students at the College.
The Service was conducted by Father Peter Mavrommatis and the Masters of Ceremonies duties were carried
out by the High School Captains John Allagiannis and Alexandra Janes. The School Coordinator, Ms Zafiriou and
two student representatives laid a wreath in memory of the fallen. Teachers, staff and students from Years 6 to
Year 12 attended. As is customary, a minute’s silence was held at 11 am. The service was concluded with the
singing of the National Anthems of Australia and Greece.
