For the Board, Ed Baker, President Dear Fellow Members, At the November Board meeting, the Board ap- proved raising rates in 4 areas for the coming year. This decision was made following a com- parative review of pricing at other area tennis clubs and our increased costs in these areas. The price changes include the first increase to court fees since 2010. Effective January 1, 2017, the following fees will change: Court rental fees will be raised to $15.00 for 1 ½ hours, singles or doubles. Tennis balls will increase from $3.50 to $4.00, ball machine rental from $3.00 to $4.00 F ROM THE B OARD S UBMITTED BY D AVE P RESUHN Welcome to the holiday season. With all the hustle and bustle one still needs to stay focused on important things...like tennis. Your club is healthy, the membership roster has a waiting list, and financials are in good shape. Let’s examine those factors for a moment. The cost of keeping the club healthy continues to increase. Wages, insurance, utilities and the general cost of keeping the club in good condition keep going up. We have limited sources of revenue. Since we have an upper limit on membership, our dues revenue is constrained. We have an inventory of court availability which is limited by our operating hours multiplied by the number of courts. We need to save additional money to support the long-term goal of purchasing the land on which the club resides before our lease expires. To keep our financials in good shape, the Board has implemented some modest rate increases for the club services. For some items, this is the first increase in several years. Elsewhere in this newsletter, Board President Ed Baker details the new fees. The Board thinks this action is a prudent course to take which still maintains the value for which the club is recognized. The club has had several successes to report. Allan’s November 12 High Performance Adult Clinic sold out with 12 students. JJ’s Level 6 (highest level) High Per- formance Junior Class has 12 full time students and several on a wait list. Allan is exploring options to allow the class to go to 3 full courts. USTA is paying for 10 and Under blended lines being painted on courts 8-9. With three courts, we can look to host 10 and Under tourna- ments in 2017 and beyond. It’s good news for players of all abilities and ages. Elections for Board members have been underway since early November. Three well-qualified candidates were presented to the club as candidates. Spoiler alert: there were three positions to be filled. Also on the ballot was a change to the by-laws regarding the length of time a Board member who had served two consecutive terms needed to wait before running for the Board again. We hope you voted! The Holiday Classic Tournament (NTRP events) is De- cember 18-23. The Holiday Open (USTA Sanctioned) is December 26-30. Entry is currently available online and entry forms are available at the front desk. We hope you have your gift list all loaded with tennis goodies. Don’t worry, Santa won’t put you on the naugh- ty list for that missed line call last summer. Happy Holidays!

Welcome to the holiday season.

JJ’s Level 6 (highest level) High Per-

formance Junior Class has 12 full time students and several on a wait list. Allan is exploring options to allow the class to go to 3 full courts. USTA is paying for 10 and Under blended lines being painted on courts 8-9. With three courts, we can look to host 10 and Under tourna-ments in 2017 and beyond.

The Holiday Classic Tournament (NTRP events) is De-cember 18-23. The Holiday Open (USTA Sanctioned) is December 26-30. Entry is currently available online and entry forms are available at the front desk.

We hope you have your gift list all loaded with tennis goodies. Don’t worry, Santa won’t put you on the naugh-ty list for that missed line call last summer.

Happy Holidays!

October was a busy month for BETC’s juniors. Our young players continued to participate in tournaments throughout the PNW as well as fin-ishing up the fall high school tennis season. Francis Viloria travelled to Longview on the week-end of October 7-9 to compete in the Mint Valley Fall Boys Advanced where he lost his first round match but advanced to the consolation semifinal where he was forced to withdraw due to illness. Amol Koli travelled further south to play the USTA National Sectional Tournament at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton. This tournament drew top players from Washington, Oregon and California. Amol won a tough three set match in the first round before losing to the sixth seeded Nadim Moteghedi from Cerritos, CA in the round of 16. The following weekend players stayed closer to home to play in the Sprinker Junior Advanced & Intermediate/Entry Level Superset Tournament in Tacoma. In the Girls’ 14 Advanced, top seed Erika Ito won convincingly in the quarters before losing to the #3 seed in the semis. Martina Antich won both her matches in tiebreakers in the round robin 14 Girls’ Intermediate Singles. In the Boys’ 14 Advanced Arnov Sahu and Jesse Maris were unfortunately matched up in the opening round. Arnov won 6-4,6-4 in a tough battle. Arnov lost in

the following round while Jesse went on to make the consola-tion Semis. S t e a m b o a t Tennis Club in Olympia held their Fall A d v a n c e d C h a m p i o n -ships on the 2 1 s t - 2 3 r d . U n s e e d e d Kaitlin Tan didn’t drop a set in her 5 victories in win-ning the Girls’ 18 Singles. Colton Weeldreyer had an equally dominant tournament and won the 18 Boys’ Singles. In the Girl’s 16 Singles, unseeded Erika Ito knocked off the #4 seed in the Quarterfi-nals before losing to the top seed in the Semis. Congratulations to all of these talented juniors on their outstanding performances. Look to the next newsletter for high school tour-nament results!

Serena Williams have their backs almost facing the net as they toss the ball. This helps them get extreme power. So to get more power on your serve imagine that your racket is a sword. Pull your sword out of its sheath during you service preparation. This will help you get a good shoulder and hip coil. You will then be surprised how easy it is to get power on your serve.

In today’s power packed game of tennis the prepara-tion of most shots are initiated with a bent elbow. Both the forehand and two handed backhand preparation begin with a bent elbow. Most pros also begin their serve with a bent elbow. Pete Sampras who is often thought of as the best server of all time pulls his racket back with a bent elbow. Having a bent elbow on your service prepara-tion will help you rotate your body into the serve creat-ing added power. An easy way to help you start your service motion with a bent elbow is to think of your racket as a sword. As you take your racket back on your serve imagine yourself pulling your racket (sword) out of its sheath. At this point your back will be almost facing the net as you reach your trophy position. All the great servers like Roger Federer and
