Once again we set about to watch and wait with eager anticipation for the arrival of God. And when he comes, what then? The change is to be complete, we know that much. We are called to change everything; or every- thing, that is, which is not love. We're called to change everything into love. This is a tall order, you might say, and some might say, a tall tale. Yet we know in our marrow that the call to love and change, change and love is right. And we know that love is both a gift and a labor, even if we are afraid of the labor and fear the gift. "Do not be afraid," the angel of the Lord says, without fail, when someone is met by God. This is never a command, but always an invitation, an empowerment. Our fear, so integral to our human condition and sense of self, can be healed. Love is what can do that. Advent and Christ- mas is what can bring that. I think watching and waiting are helpful-- they are our part of the drama. God is drawing near-- this is God's part. Then together, we and God, will begin again: begin a new life again, a new building of the Kingdom of God in the world, in this time and place, in this right here and now. This is the heart of Christmas. Together, we and God, will begin changing everything into love, which for now means justice for all and peace for all. Not for a few of us, but for all of us. This is a tall order, but God dreams big for the world. Advent and Christmas-- the coming of the Messiah to join and liberate us, to free us from brokenness, sin, and death-- help make the Dream come true. Watching, waiting, working together with you, Marc

Dear Canterburians, December means Advent and Christmas for us. Once again we set about to watch and wait with eager anticipation for the arrival of God. And when he comes, what then? The change is to be complete, we know that much. We are called to change everything; or every-thing, that is, which is not love. Advent and Christ-mas is what can bring that. C hange is in the air, and we are all eager to learn about priorities and policies of the incoming

administration in Washington. It is our responsibility as members of a democracy to tell our representatives what is important to us about the future of our nation. It is our respon-sibility as followers of Jesus to advo-

cate for the poor and the oppressed and to care for the least among us as if we were caring for Jesus, himself (Matthew 25:40). In that spirit, I encourage you to let our representatives know what you think, especially about issues affecting the least among us. Click on the links below to view contact information for the senators and the representatives who serve our area. Senator Jeff Sessions may be contacted by following this link. Senator Richard Shelby, this link. Congressman Robert B. Aderholt, this link. Congresswoman Terri Sewell, this link. Also, the upcoming session of the Alabama Legislature begins on February 7, 2017. We can expect our legislators to deal with health care, school funding, prison reform, payday and title loans, and other issues directly affecting the least among us. Alabama Arise and Voices for Alabama’s Children are good sources of information on these issues. Here is contact information for the state representatives who serve Tuscaloosa County. The following state senators serve Tuscaloosa County: Senator Gerald Allen may be contacted here. Senator Greg Reed may be contacted here. Senator Bobby Singleton may be contacted here. Please join me in sharing your views with our national and state representatives. Peace, Cindy

T ravis Redfield is a junior at UA, majoring in computer science. A child of a military family, he was born in

Oklahoma and lived in Germany and Virginia before his family moved to Huntsville. He is a graduate of Grissom High School and attended church at St. Thomas Episcopal in Huntsville. His family includes an older brother at the University of Alabama at Huntsville

and an older sister at O’more School of Design, as well as his black Labrador, Blitzen. Travis started attending Canterbury in his freshman year and says he enjoys Canterbury because of the “overwhelming (in a good way) sense of community” he finds here. When Travis is not studying, or involved in Canterbury activities, he plays trombone in the Million Dollar Band and enjoys playing ultimate Frisbee. He is known among the student group for writing the computer program that expedites placing orders for grilled cheese sandwiches at Wednesday student lunches. Following graduation, Travis expects to move back to the Huntsville area and work in the technology industry.

ADVENT (On A Theme by Dietrich Bonhoeffer) by Pamela Cranston Look how long the weary world waited, locked in its lonely cell, guilty as a prisoner. As you can imagine, it sang and whistled in the dark. It hoped. It paced and puttered about, tidying its little piles of inconsequence. It wept from the weight of ennui, draped like shackles on its wrists. It raged and wailed against the walls of its own plight. But there was nothing the world could do to find its own freedom. The door was shut tight. It could only be opened from the outside. Who could believe the latch would be turned by a pink flower — the tiny hand of a newborn baby? © by Pamela Cranston, 2011

Dear Friends, I am looking forward to the glories of music this December. Are you? I can hardly choose a favorite Advent hymn, though I do have a particu-

lar fondness for “Come, Thou long-expected Jesus” which we sang daily in chapel during Advent season at a little Episcopal dayschool I attend-ed for 1st and 2nd grades. I have come to experience those words and their simple melody with the childlike joy and eager anticipation I often feel, even now, during Advent. Innocence.

There are several special musical occasions upcoming this month: Friday, December 2 at 7 pm, Baroque at Canterbury will return with a program called "Auf Konzertenart": Baroque Concertos in Miniature. This program will feature works by Vivaldi, Quantz and Telemann. Sunday, December 4 during the 10:30 Eucharist will be special Advent music by Richard Proulx (d. 2010), American composer, organist at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, and consultant on the Hymnal 1982. This will also be our big “hurrah” of Advent before student choir members return home for the holidays! Saturday, December 24, at 10:30 PM we will have our usual Christmas Eve hymn sing followed immediately by the solemn and joyous festal Eucharist, or “Christ-Mass”. Music for the evening will feature our intrepid choir, guest instrumentalists, and –of course—you. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Jennifer Roth-Burnette, Ph.D. Organist and Choirmaster

Then an angel of the LORD stood before them, and the glory of the LORD shone round about them.

To all Canterburians and especially the ECW:

Words cannot express the sincere and deep gratitude I have for every thought, action, prayer, gift and expres-sion shared and given to and for me in my ordination to the priesthood. Your generosity and superlative acts of love and kindness shall never be forgotten! I can truly say that I am loved and cherished by all that you have done and continue to do for me. I thank God daily for being called here to Canterbury and give daily thanks to the Holy Spirit for the connection I have with each of you.

Every blessing to you all.

In thanksgiving, Father Tommie

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good

news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the LORD. This will be a sign for you: you will find

a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”

vestryfruits In its November meeting, the vestry received an updated tally of 2,789 canned food items, donated through the students’ Harvest Fest outreach program. The vestry also learned that thanks to the generosity of two parishioners, 65 Deacon’s Deli clients would be served Thanksgiving dinners on November 23rd. Plans are underway for the reorganization of interior storage spaces. This includes identify-ing abandoned items and the parties responsi-ble for them. The junior warden will form a committee assigned to sort out stored items, assign spaces, and create a labeling system. —Lila Weaver, Vestry Clerk

Did you receive your pledge card? Have you turned it in? Please keep in mind

that pledge responses help Canterbury set the budget for 2017. Your cooperation is

greatly appreciated!

A big thank you to ECW for organizing Angel Tree, & the Taste of Home sale on November 20th. The sale brought in $661, which will help brighten Christmas at Wilmer Hall. Awesome work, ladies!

The January issue of Canterbury Tales will contain brief news items and service schedules, but no columns or articles. This is being done to help our contribu-tors reduce holiday stress. We’ll be back with a full issue in February.
