The Membership Committee would like to have the following

paragraph removed from the Guild Policy Document

“New members, or former members returning after more than 2 years absence, who join the Guild January to June, to have their annual fee pro-rated for the months remaining until the end of June.” We feel that, not only is the wording cumbersome, but that the sentiment or intent is not in keeping with today's Guild. Other reasons for its removal: 1. The present membership fee is very good value for money, and low enough. 2. The Hall rent has increased since the Policy was made: not to put too fine a point on it, we

need the extra money to put towards that rent. 3. In the past few years, the majority of “late joiners” have insisted on paying the full rate. 4. In order to comply with other Guilds' Policies, that paragraph should be removed. Carol Metner

year. Basically, they suggest removing the obsolete paragraph in our policies concerning pro

-rating membership fees. We will likely debate (?) and vote on this motion (originally intro-

duced at the November meeting) in January 2017. Please take some time to ask questions &

discuss these matters with each other and/or Carol and/or Carreen. Being informed ahead of

time helps us deal with these things expeditiously at the meetings. And…that leaves more

time for the program and Show & Tell – the really fun part of getting together for meetings!

In closing, I want to cheer you on in completing your UFO(s) for The President’s Challenge.

You now have four months left before the “reveal” in April 2017. It occurred to me that some

of our completed UFOs may even appear in our Quilt Show in May 2017. There’s additional

motivation to get back at that project.

Wishing you all a safe and healthy holiday,

CAMP HOMEWOOD RETREAT – Sign up NOW

So excited to advise all of you that our next Camp Homewood retreat has

again been scheduled for four days, providing us with that coveted additional

day of sewing and socializing. It will run from Wednesday through Sunday,

February 15th – 19th, 2017.

Sign up for this retreat commenced at the November business meeting, however

we still have rooms available. If you do not feel you can attend for a full four

days please do not let that deter you from registering as it is a possibility for

some of you to attend for three days only.

Depending on sign-up numbers we may also have the option of opening up the

guesthouse for more private rooms. For further details concerning the guest-

house please speak to one of the retreat coordinators listed below. The cost per

individual for the four days would range from $227. to $280., depending on the

room you choose. The starting range of $227. is a bunk style dorm room which

sleeps up to 7, however on average there are usually anywhere from 3 to 5 in

these rooms. Individuals in these rooms have shared bathroom/shower facili-

ties.

There is a separate handicapped washroom available to any that may require

ease of access to toilet or shower. There are also newer rooms available which

sleep up to 3 and have their own washroom, including shower/tub. These

rooms are either $262. with 3 sharing the room or $280. with only 2 sharing.

All prices include 3 meals a day along with snacks in the evening consisting of

cookies/squares, fruit, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. The meals at Camp Home-

wood are excellent . . . and you will never walk away hungry!

If you have never been to a retreat at Camp Homewood we urge you to give it a

try. It is a lot of fun and a great way to get to know your fellow quilters. Over (Continued on page 5)

the past couple of years we have seen a number of quilters who have attended

retreat for the first time and have now become regulars. If you wish to sign-up

or for further information please contact one of the retreat coordinators listed be-

low.

Our contact details can be located on the guild website under “retreats” or by

viewing the membership list.

For those of you who plan ahead the dates for our fall 2017 retreat are October

18th – 22nd, 2017. We look forward to seeing some new members as well as all of

our regulars at one of the upcoming retreats.

Seasons greetings from the kitchen cops! Yikes did I really say that? Well I have been yanking out more chin hairs & noticing extra wrinkles even without the magnified mirror !! Guess the time is really flying. We are hoping the new coffee time at our monthly meetings is making everyone happy. It is great for us but we are always open to suggestions or constructive criticism. Be mindful that you are to bring your own mug for your beverage as we are on a budget & are not prepared to provide disposable cups & of course we are all environmentally aware. Also I noticed that on our quilting days the microwave has been left splattered& messy. Please tidy up any spillage you might encounter it will be much appreciated by everyone including our landlords!! Of course you remember our $5 yearly fee or 50 cents each meeting for coffee. Thank you all so much for all your help & consideration. We remain your loyal & cheerful kitchen cops… Bonnie Lineker ..Shirley Krotz…Trudy Thorne

Charles Dickens Craft Faire This year’s Charles Dickens Faire was a great success for guild members! We had 13 participants displaying a wonderful selection of quilted goods. Not only was it a financial success, but it was a great opportunity to share a lit-tle of what we do in the Comox Valley. People were very interested in our guild and several are considering membership. The variety of goods for sale was impressive with something for everyone’s pocketbook. The Christmas spirit was alive and well at our booth! Many thanks to a great team of people who worked hard to make sure it was a successful weekend. For any who are interested in participating in our next venue, it will be at our

quilt show in May. Information will be available in January.

Book Review Paradise Stitched

Sashiko & Applique Quilts

Sylvia Pippen

C + T Publishing 2009

Quilt Guild library # 573

With all this rainy/windy weather, here is a book to brighten

your day, and cause you to yearn for the tropics! Colorful

photos of hibiscus and tropical fish may make you to feel the

need to create "paradise" for your Vancouver Island home. But, if you read "about

the author" on page 79, you will find Sylvia Pippen took a different route to having

paradise in her home.

The book begins with Sashiko, which used to be a practical stitch joining three lay-

ers of a quilt together. Today it is used as a decorative surface embellishment on

the quilt top. Complete information on thread and suitable fabric, along with

marking and stitching the design, form a good basis for a sashiko beginner.

The second section deals with Applique methods. Sylvia's preference is using

sheets of heat resistant mylar for templates. The flower petals etc. are traced, cut

out with an added seam allowance which is ironed to the back of the template (We

have likely been doing this with freezer paper for years). Of course, fusible ap-

plique and needle turn are also covered, as is hand applique stitching. Selecting

fabric is very important for the appliqued pieces since copying nature is what you

are striving for.

Next comes the really fun part - combining sashiko and applique. Using a digital

camera, you are encouraged to take a lot of photos in order to isolate what appeals

Page 10

to you. Designing your own quilt is the aim of this section, but it doesn't need to be

queen size. There are a lot of tips and suggestions provided.

Embroidery embellishments add so much to the "picture". The "Honey Creepers",

page 30, rely on simple embroidery to "make" the picture, while embroidery is need-

ed to complete the bleeding heart and wild roses in "Wildflowers and Sashiko", page

46. Finishing the quilt covers quilting, binding and hanging sleeves.

Now for the quilt gallery - and what a display of color and sashiko stitches! This is

sure to get you motivated. Projects such as "Tropical Waves", "Honey Creeper in

Bamboo" and "California Poppies" show such an interesting combination of stitch

and applique AND the patterns are provided at the back of the book. Sashiko is not

just a series of straight or curved running stitches, but can be used to outline ap-

plique or form stems and leaves for appliqued flowers.

A "thumbs up" for this book - especially if our weather is making you feel gloomy.

Canada's Big Quilt Bee

To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday we want you to be part of Canada’s biggest Quilt Bee!

The Big Quilt Bee will be held June 14-17, 2017 at Quilt Canada 2017 in Toronto, ON. We’ll have sewing ma-

chines, long arms, mid arms and an army of volunteers ready to work on quilt tops

and stacks of slabs made by hundreds of Canadian quilters. But your help is need-

ed!

Our goal is to make and donate 1,000 quilts for kids at Ronald McDonald Houses

across Canada!

Here’s where we need your help. We need lots of quilt tops and 12 ½” slab

blocks incorporating at least one piece of special Canada fabric.

Details on how to make the slab blocks are online at:

https://www.canadianquilter.com/pdf/quilt-canada-2017/Quilting-Bee-How-to-

make-a-block.pdf

Canada’s national guild, the Canadian Quilters Association, of which our guild is a member, has invited guilds

across the country to join in and sew the slab blocks. Here I am with some friends on a very windy day with

our 3 quilt tops:

Apricot Coconut French Toast (8 servings) Remember you can substitute almond milk for real milk, Splenda for sugar, and gluten free bread for the regular loaf. Any bread can be substituted. ½ Cup chopped, dried apricots ½ Cup water ¼ cup butter, melted. 2/3 cup flaked coconut ¼ cup sugar 1 ¼ tsp cinnamon 7 eggs 1 ¾ Cups milk 1 tsp vanilla pinch salt 16 slices French Bread or baguette (1 inch thick) Maple syrup to serve 1. In a small microwave safe bowl, heat apricots and water for 2 mins. Let stand 5 mins and

drain. 2. Pour melted butter into a 15 inch x 10 inch x 1 inch baking pan, and tilt to coat the bottom

with butter. 3. Sprinkle with coconut and apricots. Combine sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle this over the

fruit. 4. In a large shallow bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla and salt. Dip bread into the egg mix-

ture, soak for 1 min. Place slices close together over coconut mixture. (Pour any extra egg mixture over the top). Cover with cling film and refrigerate over night.

5. Remove from refrigerator 30 mins before baking. Turn on oven, 375 degrees. 6. Bake for 20 – 25 mins or until golden brown. Serve with maple syrup. This is an excellent “make-ahead” brunch or breakfast dish for Christmas or New Year. Any leftovers can be re-heated for 15 seconds per slice in the microwave. Enjoy. Carreen
