on Thursday, December 17.

WOW! It seems like it was just a few months ago I wrote my first com-modore column and now this is my last one. Time does fly by when you are having fun, and I have had fun this past year.

December is the 12th month of our year, and the month with the short-est daylight hours in the northern hemisphere and the longest daylight hours in the southern hemisphere. December gets its name from the Latin word decem meaning ten. It was the 10th month of the year in the Roman calendar. December 1st is national AIDS day; the 3rd is national Day of People with Disability; the 5th is Sinterklaas Day in The Netherlands; the 6th is Saint Nicholas Day in Greece and Switzerland; the 7th is Pearl Harbor Day; the 10th is Human Rights Day; the 14th is Monkey Day; the 15th is Bill of Rights Day; the 21st is the first day of winter/winter solstice; the 24th is Christmas Eve; the 25th is Christmas; the 26th is Boxing Day, and the 31st is New Year’s Eve.

I have enjoyed this year; we accomplished many things the last three years but, as you might expect, there are still a lot of things to do. Our club is growing, the member use is higher every month over the previ-ous month, finances are good (could always be better), and the Old Lady looks great. As we go forward we need to add more members, and that is the responsibil-ity of all of us.

Kathy and I thank you for the wonderful times these last three years. Thanks for the opportunity to serve.

Happy Holidays!

happy holiDays! How lucky we are: Florida weather and CYC friends to party with! So come on down where the FUN is!

Go easyBecause boats basically reside in water, the subjects of

caulking and its cousin bedding compound often come up in conversations concerning boat repair and maintenance. Whether you’re fixing or replacing a hatch, an anchor windlass, a window frame, or whatever, it’s very likely that, before you finish the job, at least one of many water-thwarting products (with a familiar appellation or brand name like Dolfinite, 3M, Sikaflex, BoatLife, etc.) is going to be involved.

Which is all well and good, of course. But when using virtu-ally any of these caulking and/or bedding substances, it’s important to remember one very general rule that’s often broken by the average DIY guy: don’t over-tighten or prema-turely tighten the various surfaces involved!

Let’s say, for example, that you are replacing a deck fitting of some sort and you’ve reached a point where you’re ready to apply a layer of bedding compound between the fitting and the deck. Go ahead—do it. But once you’ve applied the compound and made sure the fasteners involved are properly positioned, tighten them only enough to squish the compound down to a reasonable thickness. Should you put some real torque to the screws or bolts you’re using? Yes indeedy, but don’t twist them so darn far that you wind up squeezing out way too much of the waterproof stuff you’re trying to squeeze in.

Instead, go easy. Once the caulking or bedding material has set up and/or cured, then add some twist to your fasteners if you want. It’ll boost the stuff’s gasket effect.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

TIS THE SEASON TO BE RACING!!! This month is going to be something special as Fr.

Bob Wagenseil will be hosting the 1st Annual Ted Irwin Memorial Sail-a-thon. This regatta will be held on December 5th and promises to be an exciting addi-tion to the youth sailing lineup. Please contact Fr. Bob for details.

The fall Beer Can racing schedule concludes this month. It has been a FABULOUS way for club mem-bers to get out on the water and mix it up around the marks. The final race will be held on Sunday, Dec. 13. Contact Tish Wold if you have a boat and would like to race OR… just join in the fun and crew.

Our 2016 winter season will kick-off in February with the 49er FX and Nacra 17 World Champion-ships. We are anticipating this will be a major event in Gulf racing as we are expecting about 200 boats to show up from all over the world to qualify for posi-tions in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. This regatta will begin on Sunday, February 7th and run through Sunday, February 14th. So, I hope you will plan to join in the FUN and participate as a member of the Race Committee.

Be sure to check out our schedule for the upcoming months:

on land during the regattas! I encourage everyone to attend the Yachting Committee meetings. The Yacht-ing Committee meets on the third Tuesday of the month, but always the Tuesday before the Board meet-ing. So, come and be a part of the EXCITEMENT!

I look forward to seeing you at the club and on the water!

Clearwater Challenge a challengeWheN a TWo-Day regatta becomes a one-day regatta because of the weather, you know there’s some kind of baaaaaad wind in the air. And that’s just what happened when the second day of racing was cancelled on Nov. 1. But the 11 participants – three from CYC – sailed good races and had a lot of stories to tell at the Tiki Bar. Representing CYC were Jeff Marks’ Farr 396 Wasabi, coming in first in Spinnaker; RC Ed Proefke’s Beneteau 345 Valhalla, coming in first in Cruising; and PC Tish Wold and Dick Crowl’s Tartan 3000 Riva, coming in, uh, not first, in Cruising.

We have eNJoyeD excellent sailing and friend-ship/team building this fall. Our CYC officers and staff, along with our parents and volunteers, have been a great support for us. We’ve had a total of 23 kids enrolled in our Saturday and after school Youth Sailing program along with four “intrepid” adults. Those classes and our after school program concluded Saturday, November 21st and all programs will resume early in the New Year.

Our “varsity” Opti team kids spent November 14-15 competing under challenging wind conditions in the Car-lisle Classic regatta. Twenty-seven kids from across south-west Florida took part in this annual event, including seven of our CYC/IRFSA sailors. For most, it was their first race, but they all showed themselves to be Intrepid Sailors!

During the first half of December we will be publishing our program schedule for winter through summer 2016 and we are once again looking forward to great things and good friends for the New Year.

Wishing you fair winds and many blessings!Fr Bob [email protected] (727) 510-6153

The NoveMBer Cruise-in to CYC turned out to be a wonderful weekend thanks to our hosts Tom and Joy Meyer. Our planned fishing tournament had to be canceled due to a cold front, compliments of Mother Nature. But no worries, in traditional Cruiser style our host rose to the occasion with Tom and Joy pulling more fish out of their freezer than there was in the Gulf of Mexico! Our Fish Fry on Saturday night fed not only the Cruisers, but the whole Clearwater Yacht Club. Thanks to Tom Meyer, Rick Burkel and Darryl Herbert for frying up our fish. Tom Brusini and Chef John provided a great Friday night seafood buffet and all the fixings for the Saturday night fish fry. Good fun, good food, good friends. Sunday we all gathered to partake of the CYC Sunday buffet breakfast, as if we had not eaten enough that weekend. The final event of the year is our traditional Cruisers Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 9th at 6:30pm.

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone and all

the fun and great cruising we have done, but it is time to plan for next year and so we have prepared the following preliminary 2016 Cruiser Schedule for you. Remember we need hosts to organize each cruise so come out, use your boat and participate in the fun.

By Johnny Cardosi, vice Commodore

TUrN oUT the lights, the party’s over. They say that, ‘All good things must end.’

Let’s call it a night, the party’s over. And tomorrow starts the same old thing again. What a crazy, crazy, party, never seen so many people laughin’, dancin’. Look at you, you’re havin’ fun. (Willie Nelson)

These lyrics sum up my time as vice com-modore. It has always been said the vice commodore year is the toughest. For me it was filled with lots of fun, lots of meetings, certainly some struggles, which I saw as opportunities, and frankly, time is running out too soon. So much still to do!

This year has been full of accomplishments, none more re-warding than bringing new life back to our ole club house. Many repairs were needed before we could power wash and apply two fresh coats of paint and sealer to the building exterior. To add longevity to our aging parking lot we seal-coated and restriped the parking spaces. The old railroad tie wall had deteriorated and needed replacing before it collapsed on a car. We replaced the rotted railroad ties with white stone pavers and have heard nothing but positive comments on how great it looks. We made many, many changes inside the club, too. Check out the list of improvements on this page.

It has been fun working with Tom and his staff and creat-ing new menus with Chef John. House & Grounds Committee members have been very helpful and supportive of our many projects and ideas. Some of which they thought would never happen, but they did.

It has been my pleasure to serve as vice commodore. I look forward to updating you on our club’s 2016 activities and proj-ects in the commodore’s column. Don’t forget to make reserva-tions for the Change of Watch ceremony and dinner December 5th. I hope to see you there.

house and Grounds Committee 2015 projectsYour House and Grounds Committee has accomplished a lot

for CYC this year. Here is a short list of the projects completed for the club:

A glass washer was installed in Grille Room bar because the hand-wash method couldn’t keep up at large parties, and the washer provides better sanitation. The glass washer was made possible by a substantial donation from a member.

A new stainless steel sink was installed in the upstairs bar since the old sink had been leaking for years and was finally beyond repair. Also in the bar, all the TVs were replaced, thanks to member donations.

A new pram rack, paid for by Yachting and Youth Sailing, re-placed the old rack that was falling apart and dangerous.

White stone pavers replaced the deteriorating railroad ties in the Memorial Garden retaining wall. The Gulls paid for the pavers as their annual gift to the Club. Also, pilings along the north side of the building were replaced with white stone pavers.

The Club house, Tiki bar and viewing stand were sealed and painted – no one could recall the last time this was done. The Club’s painting project included new stairway railings and new plywood flooring for the entry ramp.

New navy blue barrel awnings have been installed above the north and south entrances and over the kitchen facing the pool; the light sconces on the Club’s front wall were refurbished (again, thanks to a generous member).

The round window in the entrance foyer, which had been leak-ing because of wood rot and sheetrock damage, was replaced, and a beautiful new stained glass CYC burgee was installed. Also in the foyer, hinges on both doors were replaced to eliminate dragging.

Colorful easy-care foliage was planted by the dockside stairway and the dead palm tree was removed.

In the Dry Dock, the four broken ceiling fans were replaced with oscillating pole fans – paid for by Dinghy Poker Run funds – and a new 60-inch TV makes game-viewing much easier from all points.

The parking lot has been patched, surface-sealed and re-striped.

The entire Club was termite-tented, a project long overdue.Jonas, the Club’s accounting software, was upgraded and we

have a new lease for the copier/printer, which is saving us money and staff time on repairs.

The CYC website was completed and launched – check it out at www.clearwateryachtclub.org.

Gulls TracksBy Joyce JenkynGulls president

Hello Ladies! The NoveMBer 11th Boatique and Fashion Show Luncheon with the Bobbles, Bangles & Beads section was a great success. Over half of the sale proceeds came from the gently-worn jewelry donated by our generous members. What beautiful items we managed to collect – and sell! Over 70 ladies attended, and we all had a great time!

Connie Boblenz’ beautiful handmade afghan, which was raffled off at the Boatique, was won by guest and past CYC member Marjorie Brandt. The fantastic Party Basket was won by guest Lisa Stanley, and the Death by Chocolate Basket was won by guest Madge Amann. Obviously our guests spend more money on the opportunity tickets than our own members! I was very disappointed not to win either the Death by Chocolate Basket (what a way to die!) or the gorgeous afghan, but I’m sure they will be thoroughly enjoyed by their new owners.

The Sign of The Dolphin provided beautiful clothing and accessories for the fashion show with six lovely CYC ladies doing the modeling! Our own Tom Brusini was having minor heart attacks at all the beautiful items that Terry modeled – and considered buying! I think she ended up with only one outfit, but…. Our wonderful Chef John went all out on the menu for this annual event – the petite filet was outstanding!

The December Gulls-Sponsored Ladies Luncheon will be held on December 16th. New Gulls Board Officers will be inducted at this luncheon. And, since this is the Holiday season, the focus of the luncheon will be a White Elephant Gift Exchange. This means each attendee brings in one wrapped gift – either a gently-used item from home or a newly purchased item (maximum $10). Gifts should be “funny“– not “fine!” The idea is that each attendee brings a gift, receives a number, and when the number is called that person selects a gift – either one of the wrapped gifts or one that someone else has already taken! When someone’s gift is taken from them, they get to select a new gift – either a wrapped gift or they can “steal” someone else’s gift! Each gift can only be “stolen” two times. Everyone brings a gift, and everyone leaves with a gift – and there is a lot of laughter in between!! Only those who bring a gift can participate in the game! Get your reservations in now ladies – this luncheon will be a riot!

The Gulls meet every Wednesday morning, whether it’s for a monthly Board meeting, a monthly Gulls-Sponsored Ladies Luncheon, or just for conversation and games, etc., and then stay on for lunch. Come join us in the Gulls Nest any Wednes-day around 10:30am.

If you are interested in getting more involved in the Gulls, please let one of our officers know – or just come to any

Wednesday gathering in the Gulls Nest at 10:30am and stay on for lunch.

Keep in mind that on Saturday, March 5, 2016 we will hold our biennial Dockside Yard Sale, where we will sell the won-derful treasures that you no longer want and have donated for the sale. We will start collecting items about February 6th. If anyone has a trailer that they can loan us for storing all the items received for the 4 weeks prior to the sale and for 1 week after the sale, it would be very much appreciated!

We are always looking for new ideas for programs for the coming season, so please give some thought to the kinds of things you would enjoy, and let me or Terri Freiberg ([email protected]) know! Hope to see everyone soon. The Gulls hope your Holidays are terrific!Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and Happy Kwanzaa!!

I have truly enjoyed this past year as Rear Commodore and Entertain-

I know I would not have been successful this year without their support and wish to thank them for their efforts on the committee.

The MeMBership Committee is looking forward to an exciting De-cember! We had a great turnout at the new member breakfast in November; a good time was had by all and our new-est members are more than enthusiastic about everything the club has to offer!

Continuing through February 29, 2016, your club has an AMAZING new program to en-courage you to help your friends and contacts be able to enjoy the fun, rewarding, and relaxing lifestyle of being a member of a private club.

The Membership Committee has set a goal of the club having 500 members. In order to make it happen, we need your help. Helping out is easy, fun and REWARD-ING for you.

The program is simple and available to all members: recruit a new Full or Junior Member, have them join and start having fun! After they have enjoyed three months of membership, you (the referring member) will receive a $500 food and beverage credit to use at CYC.

Seems like a great deal, right? Guess what?

THERE’S MORE! Recruit 5 new members during the program who stay for 3 months and you will receive an additional $500 food and beverage credit on top of the five $500 credits you have already banked (that’s right, $3,000 in food and beverage credit for recruiting 5 new members)!

WelCoMe To DeCeMBer! I say it all the time, but it still amazes me how the time just slips past us. Weren’t we just enjoying the summer months, cookouts, dock parties and more?

Thanks to those of you that have already contributed to the annual Employee Holiday Fund – awe-some! This is our way of thanking those that work so faithfully for us. We hand out the checks for the en-tire crew – including some that you may not see very often, our galley team – at our Employee Holiday party on December 20th. Your gen-

erosity is always appreciated!

HIGH FIVE! No, not the celebration after a touchdown – it’s our current membership promotion! What a super way to introduce new friends to our family and be rewarded at the same time. Remember, any class of membership can benefit by sponsor-ing someone under this program, as long as the incoming member signs up as a full, voting member. Each new one gets you a $500 Food & Beverage credit on your club ac-count once the sponsored member is aboard for 90 days…wow!

Here comes December – get out your highlighters and mark your calendars now:

12/5 Change of Watch 12/12 Holiday Boat Parade12/19 Breakfast with Santa12/23 Holiday Social12/31 New Year’s Eve Party

Plus lots of private parties in be-tween! I’ll supply all the details, as usual, but for now call your friends, talk with your spouse, and plan on spending the holidays with us!

As always, thank you for your

continued support of our fine club!At your service,I remain, Tom Brusini
